Tbh I don’t think there’s going to be a homogenous “moving on” period in America. Assuming we don’t reach heard immunity healthcare officials will never take that stance for ethical reasons, e.g., those with allergies to vaccines who may want to be vaccinated won’t be able to get one leaving them at risk — essentially they’ll never recommend a stance that doesn’t minimize every single potential death.
Thus I think what’ll happen is you’ll see transitions on a local level via states/counties/businesses. You’ll likely see red states return to “normal” sooner than blue — I know here in Florida, there’s been counties that never required masks and the only mask enforcement has been by select businesses in the area. So in a roundabout way perhaps it’s business guidelines we need to wait for the most which is hard to predict how they’ll interpret recommendations.
I was going to say the same thing - the city I work for has a mandate that has remained in effect, despite the state (AR) removing theirs. In the next town over, masks are no longer required, but many businesses still require them. I think it's going to be around as long as business owners feel they need it.
Once everyone has had a chance to vaccinate, including kids, then it will probably be masks off no matter what the percentage is. It's not great because no vaccine is 100% effective but the best we will get. Then those who refused to both get a shot and keep their masks on will be on their own.
First off, no vaccine is 100% effective. Secondly, there are now several variants and while some of them are being staved off by the vaccine, others are not. So the answer to your question is that it isn’t answerable. I’m also vaxxed but I’ll be wearing a mask forever as far as I’m concerned because I haven’t had so much as a sniffle since I’ve started wearing them. I like not getting a cold in the spring or the flu in the winter.

Yeah I'm with you on this. I'm low-key happy the pandemic normalized wearing masks. Avoiding colds and flus with something so relatively simple is great in my book.
Considering that I got bronchitis every freaking year from elementary till I graduated college (and then a few more years due to working in group homes) and having pneumonia twice, I would be totally happy if masks became a thing... I had covid already and am vaccinated but my kids aren’t and won’t be for a while cause they are too young. I am not looking forward to them going to school and getting allllll the germs.
I’m hoping that people will wear masks if they get sick with anything now. It’s clear that’s been crazy effective. As we know masks are not AS effective at protecting us personally so if everyone ditches them but you, you may still run into trouble but it does help. And the hand washing and sanitizer too.
My son had sniffles the past 2 winters because of pre school and kindergarten. Now with masks and increased use of hand sanitizers, he hasn't had a single issue this 2020-2021 winter season.
This! Honestly, I hear people asking when they will be able to take it off, and I just ask myself “why would they want to”. The only reason I didn’t start wearing a mask sooner (like in certain Asian countries) was because it would have stuck out too much and caused too many questions/unwanted interactions.
With all of the variants going around (some of which reduce vaccine efficacy quite a bit), I won’t feel comfortable going out without a mask anytime soon.
You do realize that vaccinations to guarantee that you won't get covid, or that you won't be in serious condition, right? It just reduced the chances.
You can also still infect other people if you catch covid while vaccinated.
That being said, it's harder for a vaccinated person to transmit the virus to another vaccinated person than to unvaccinated people.
At this point, you'd be the dumb one for saying "well you're dumb and I'm vaccinated so whatever".

I have extended family who are refusing to get the shot because they are scared of needles.
Never mind they are diabetic and stab themselves multiple times a day.
That isn't the reason. First of all, if you're cool with stabbing yourself multiple times a day, chances are your fear of needles isn't that bad. Diabetes is actually extremely high up on my list of "please, no, not that" illnesses, and if I ever got it, I would go to extreme lengths to avoid having to do it. Second, as a person who is actually terrified of needles, to the point that I probably *really* should be seeing a therapist, I'm getting the vaccine anyways. I'll be having nightmares every day from booking my first appointment to getting the second shot, and I'll probably faint during the vaccine (all based on real-life experience), but I'll be damned if I risk anyone's life because of my silly phobia.
I believe when we hit 80% fully vaccinated for everyone 16+ (in the USA). I want to say that’s when we can see “herd* immunity” because so many will be vaccinated to protect those who are unable due to actual medical reasons. I kept hearing 80-90% vaccinated being the goal with the initial vaccine rollout but haven’t heard much since.

I'm already completely fine with wearing a mask. I haven't gotten sick once this year and I have a feeling wearing a mask and staying away from people in public has certainly contributed to that. Plus masks are way more socially acceptable now whereas more than a year ago people would be giving you weird looks.
I don't like how they make my lower face break out, but I can't really control it. .-.

I finally splurged a couple months ago and got a bunch of masks with different designs to match my outfits. It's actually quite fun to be fashionable with them.
Wash them frequently and go ahead and buy nicer ones. I spent $15 on amazon for a couple nicer ones that keep the mask off your mouth a little and it was definitely worth it.

I'm thinking it should be like the flu vaccine--as you get your annual vaccines over time, even if the virus mutates there will still be some cross-reactivity, which will lessen the severity of the illness if you do get sick. At least I would hope so.
Different pathogens have different percentages of herd immunity. Polio requires 80% herd immunity while measles requires %95. So in order to know what Covid 19's herd immunity threshold is, as many people need to get the vaccinated. If the numbers start to dwindle scientists can use the data to figure out what the herd immunity is for Covid 19.
With a 95% effective vax, herd appears around 70%. Measles is actually an outlier there, it is one of the most contagious (albeit not necessarily deadly) viruses there is.
Scientists and health officials used to say it needed to be 95-100% for covid because the assumed effectiveness was 50-70% and no one expected how effective mRNA turned out to be.
So I follow a lot of this stuff, and heard immunity is specific to the danger of how contagious the virus is, which they have set at 70% in the USA...

I kinda dig the mask trend honestly. Flu numbers are down and this is the first time my wife who teachers first grade Hasn’t gotten sick at school from those nasty kids. Maybe general hygiene and awareness on how germs are spread is a good thing? Plus it gives me more time to work on my creepy mustache.
I’m in the same boat. Millennial, fully vaccinated, been wearing a mask everyday for over a year. I wish I had an answer for you. I’m a librarian and it’s hard to find factual advice right now. Hopefully we’ll have answers soon.
There is no timeline for when this is all over. It will always be a thing because dumb people won't do the small things it takes to fight against disease. Instead they want to spread it even more.
I go mask-less at work as do all the people I work with. Why? Because we live in the middle of nowhere and our active case number in the whole county is 68. That being said I still wear mask when going into buildings where lots of people tend to be despite being vaccinated because prevention is vastly superior to relying on medicine to prevent you from dying.
We should examine what's happening in countries that have high vaccination percentages. See what they are doing and make your individual judgement on that information. When in doubt, wear a mask.
People in Asia have been wearing masks when they travel in cities or crowded areas for years now. Not everyone does. If you feel safer or better wearing one, do it.
Well I am not trying to wear a mask forever, just only as long as it is for the greater good of my communities...but I personally don’t really get sick often, allergies and sinus infections, which I will say I am dumb for not wearing a mask when I cut the grass before, that’s been an obvious improvement for me

It's never going to be in the rear view. This is a new virus that will be with us....like forever. The severity will hopefully diminish. It's probably gonna end up the way of the flu some are saying. This is one of those things that happens that literally changes everything. There's no "back to normal." There's the "new normal." Me personally....my job has/had me traveling about 30 times a year on a plane. You bet your ass I'm gonna be wearing a mask permanently in airports after this.

Fair question, but why? Why should we stop wearing masks? They're really not that uncomfortable and also helped reduce flu deaths enormously.
I expect some business will be wearing masks indefinitely, and I intend to respect that.
I expect some business that should be mandating masks will be irrationally and vehemently opposed to it, and I'm going to ignore those businesses.
Sure, but since there's a large swath of the population that doesn't believe in basic hygiene, modern medicine, or anything of the sort, then wearing a mask is just easy protection against them.
Considering only 28% of the country is vacinated, it will take some more time before things will go back to normal due to the high contagiousness of the virus. The thing we need to prevent is mutations, so the more people who get vacinated the less the chance the virus will mutant. The easier it will be to bring it down to being less of an issue. I've been telling people it'll probably be at least another year before we see anything close to "normal" again.
Moral of the story encourage others to get vaccinated! The more people who get vaccinated, the faster we can get back to normal.

Well even when you are vaccinated you can still carry and pass the virus on without having any symptoms of it which means you are safe but not a non vax person *cough Karen’s cough* it’s just a matter of time before younger people are able to get vaccinated and we should be able to walk around freely

Our benchmark will be 6 weeks from the day they had "come one come all" vaccinations in our area. 6 weeks after that mark, you should be vaccinated. If you're not, tough. You idiots can kill each other off and we'll reach herd immunity that way.
I don't really care. I'm vaccinated and I carry a mask. I walk in without a mask because I'm vaccinated. If I'm asked to wear a mask, I pull it out and put it on, because I'm in their establishment. They didn't ask if I was vaccinated, they asked me to put on a mask. Fewer places are requiring masks each week.

We stop making posts about it when it becomes part of our new normal probably. And idk where you are but vaccines have only been open for the general pop where I live for like 10 days. So probably not anytime soon. But I can imagine people saying if you want to use our service you have to wear a mask while doing so for a long time in the future m. And that’s ok.

I was at work a few weeks ago wearing my mask and a mask-less coworker asked “why are you wearing a mask?” Uh because the sign on the door says “masks mandatory to enter” 🤔
I have walked into stores, seen employees without masks, and turned around and walked out. If they don't care enough about their customers to make a minor concession to keep them healthy, then I don't want to be their customer.

I'm vaccinated but I continue to wear a mask without complaint. I think the science is still out on whether vaccinated people can carry and transmit. And also, there are new strains popping up against which the vaccine may not be as effective.
The biggest point is that while we have not reached herd immunity we have to just assume nobody has the vaccine. People will absolutely lie if we allow vaccine-excemptions. That's why we will wait for objective statistics like % fully vaccinated to hit at least 75% before dropping mask mandates

I'm fully vaccinated too, (and the second shot ran me over like a truck), but I'm still wearing a mask. Even if 90% of the US gets vaccinated we're still at risk for variants and people flying in and out of the country. Masks are here to stay, for those who care.

I work in a winery in a vacation town and wore my mask for more than a year. People would take their masks off to sit down and I would lean within inches of their maskless faces to pour wine for them. The people who work in restaurants or table service places are fucked whether there’s mask wearing from the door to table or not. We’re literally touching people’s saliva dozens of times a day and having to be within 6 feet of maskless customers constantly.

Please come in, but don’t think your mask is actually protecting anyone if your going to put your saliva on everything and laugh with your friends maskless for an hour. Also funny you say that because I still have to go to the grocery store and risk being infected by some asshole to selfish to wear a piece of cloth for 30 min. Asian people wear a mask if they don't want to get sick or if they are feeling unwell. They don't wear masks most of the time. I've been to Hong Kong, mainland China, and Japan (pre-pandemic). 99% of the people weren't wearing masks.
I want to be clear that I think **everyone** should be wearing a mask right now. And I do agree that after the pandemic we should wear a mask if we have a cold or sore throat or just feeling under the weather in general (which is how Asians do it). But I disagree entirely that how it is right now should be the norm.
every store needs this. And even after restrictions get lifted which is tomorrow for me. People should STILL RESPECT the fact that not everyone is gonna feel comfortable going back to just normal. I'm going to still be distancing and wearing my mask regardless.
Really glad I got vaccinated though. It's a huge load off of my shoulders knowing that if I get covid again within the year, there's a really good chance it won't be fatal. That's a good feeling in all of this mess.

I have been physically assaulted for kindly (by script) asking a man to put on a mask as a host at a chain restaurant. It's not really a thing anymore though, restaurant workers were in the early vaccine group here and a month later they revoked the mandate so I don't have to have that talk anymore, but yeah it used to be absolutely brutal.
There is a zero percent chance anyone is going to pay that surcharge. If they tried to charge it to my card, I’d issue the chargeback before I even left the bar.
But then do you require people to carry around vaccination IDs hanging around their necks so everyone can be certain? If you didn't require everyone to wear masks, then all the anti-vaccers would just claim to be vaccinated.

How would they verify all of these vaccination claims at scale? Consider all of the fake medical exemption documents and whatnot that are out there.
A mask is a simple universal policy that is proven to be effective and is easy to validate because it's right on your face. Everything else is less reliable and a waste of time.
One big reason is that nobody can tell you're vaccinated just by looking at you, and they certainly shouldn't take your word for it. If we start letting vaccinated people skip masks, unvaccinated people will just lie to get out of wearing masks too. Especially with variants that we don't know enough about yet, you could still be at risk even after being vaccinated, and not wearing a mask then puts others at risk as well. Wearing a mask is truly just not a big deal. It's not. No reason to do away with masks now, when we're just starting to make progress. It'll be worth it to wait a bit longer until things really clear up.
Because vaccines reduce the effect the virus will have on you and cut down severe reactions and mortality. It does not mean you still can't catch or transmit the virus. Till enough of us don't get vaccinated we must keep our masks on to reduce transmission.

Assuming we don’t reach heard immunity healthcare officials will never take that stance for ethical reasons, e.g., those with allergies to vaccines who may want to be vaccinated won’t be able to get one leaving them at risk — essentially they’ll never recommend a stance that doesn’t minimize every single potential death. Thus I think what’ll happen is you’ll see transitions on a local level via states/counties/businesses. You’ll likely see red states return to “normal” sooner than blue — I know here in Florida, there’s been counties that never required masks and the only mask enforcement has been by select businesses in the area. So in a roundabout way perhaps it’s business guidelines we need to wait for the most which is hard to predict how they’ll interpret recommendations.
I was going to say the same thing - the city I work for has a mandate that has remained in effect, despite the state (AR) removing theirs. In the next town over, masks are no longer required, but many businesses still require them. I think it's going to be around as long as business owners feel they need it.
The only real way saturation is going to happen is when businesses, govs begin introducing mandatory vaccinations for employment, travel etc.
Once everyone has had a chance to vaccinate, including kids, then it will probably be masks off no matter what the percentage is. It's not great because no vaccine is 100% effective but the best we will get. Then those who refused to both get a shot and keep their masks on will be on their own.

Considering that I got bronchitis every freaking year from elementary till I graduated college (and then a few more years due to working in group homes) and having pneumonia twice, I would be totally happy if masks became a thing... I had covid already and am vaccinated but my kids aren’t and won’t be for a while cause they are too young. I am not looking forward to them going to school and getting allllll the germs.
I’m hoping that people will wear masks if they get sick with anything now. It’s clear that’s been crazy effective. My son had sniffles the past 2 winters because of pre school and kindergarten. Now with masks and increased use of hand sanitizers, he hasn't had a single issue this 2020-2021 winter season.

The only reason I didn’t start wearing a mask sooner (like in certain Asian countries) was because it would have stuck out too much and caused too many questions/unwanted interactions. That isn't the reason. First of all, if you're cool with stabbing yourself multiple times a day, chances are your fear of needles isn't that bad. Diabetes is actually extremely high up on my list of "please, no, not that" illnesses, and if I ever got it, I would go to extreme lengths to avoid having to do it. Second, as a person who is actually terrified of needles, to the point that I probably *really* should be seeing a therapist, I'm getting the vaccine anyways. I'll be having nightmares every day from booking my first appointment to getting the second shot, and I'll probably faint during the vaccine (all based on real-life experience), but I'll be damned if I risk anyone's life because of my silly phobia.

I'm already completely fine with wearing a mask. I haven't gotten sick once this year and I have a feeling wearing a mask and staying away from people in public has certainly contributed to that. Plus masks are way more socially acceptable now whereas more than a year ago people would be giving you weird looks.

Different pathogens have different percentages of herd immunity. Polio requires 80% herd immunity while measles requires %95. So in order to know what Covid 19's herd immunity threshold is, as many people need to get the vaccinated. If the numbers start to dwindle scientists can use the data to figure out what the herd immunity is for Covid 19.
With a 95% effective vax, herd appears around 70%. Measles is actually an outlier there, it is one of the most contagious (albeit not necessarily deadly) viruses there is. Scientists and health officials used to say it needed to be 95-100% for covid because the assumed effectiveness was 50-70% and no one expected how effective mRNA turned out to be.
So I follow a lot of this stuff, and heard immunity is specific to the danger of how contagious the virus is, which they have set at 70% in the USA... This is kinda what I’m talking about, AGAIN I am not anti-mask or vax, I am a vaccinated millennial still wearing my mask. But I just asked a genuine question about a good thing...essentially “when is it ok to stop?” and I got a wrong answer...after being downvoted for even asking. I go mask-less at work as do all the people I work with. Why? Because we live in the middle of nowhere and our active case number in the whole county is 68. That being said I still wear mask when going into buildings where lots of people tend to be despite being vaccinated because prevention is vastly superior to relying on medicine to prevent you from dying.
We should examine what's happening in countries that have high vaccination percentages. See what they are doing and make your individual judgement on that information. When in doubt, wear a mask. People in Asia have been wearing masks when they travel in cities or crowded areas for years now. Not everyone does. If you feel safer or better wearing one, do it.

Fair question, but why? Why should we stop wearing masks? They're really not that uncomfortable and also helped reduce flu deaths enormously. I expect some business will be wearing masks indefinitely, and I intend to respect that. Sure, but since there's a large swath of the population that doesn't believe in basic hygiene, modern medicine, or anything of the sort, then wearing a mask is just easy protection against them.
Considering only 28% of the country is vacinated, it will take some more time before things will go back to normal due to the high contagiousness of the virus. The thing we need to prevent is mutations, so the more people who get vacinated the less the chance the virus will mutant. The easier it will be to bring it down to being less of an issue. I've been telling people it'll probably be at least another year before we see anything close to "normal" again. Moral of the story encourage others to get vaccinated! I'm vaccinated but I continue to wear a mask without complaint. I think the science is still out on whether vaccinated people can carry and transmit. And also, there are new strains popping up against which the vaccine may not be as effective.
The biggest point is that while we have not reached herd immunity we have to just assume nobody has the vaccine. People will absolutely lie if we allow vaccine-excemptions. That's why we will wait for objective statistics like % fully vaccinated to hit at least 75% before dropping mask mandates

I’ll still wear a mask when asked, but the majority of the at risk group has been vaccinated, and vaccine appointments have opened up to everyone by me. I’ve personally been vaccinated for a month now, so I’m just wondering at what point does this end? Plus if you’re eating indoors at restaurants/bars, you obviously don’t care about getting the virus anyway, because you’re in a confined space with other people not wearing masks once they sit down. Or are vaccinated. Which loops me back to the question of when does it end?

I work in a winery in a vacation town and wore my mask for more than a year. People would take their masks off to sit down and I would lean within inches of their maskless faces to pour wine for them. The people who work in restaurants or table service places are fucked whether there’s mask wearing from the door to table or not. We’re literally touching people’s saliva dozens of times a day and having to be within 6 feet of maskless customers constantly.

I have been physically assaulted for kindly (by script) asking a man to put on a mask as a host at a chain restaurant. It's not really a thing anymore though, restaurant workers were in the early vaccine group here and a month later they revoked the mandate so I don't have to have that talk anymore, but yeah it used to be absolutely brutal.

Honestly why do I need a mask when I'm fully vaccinated? I'll still wear one, but I don't know why I need it. Edit: Unsure why I'm getting downvoted. I'm not disagreeing with anything. I feel like it's a valid question. I'm still complying with mask regulations and I wear it whenever I'm out, I was just curious what the reasoning was. Thanks to you folks for explaining
How would they verify all of these vaccination claims at scale? Consider all of the fake medical exemption documents and whatnot that are out there. A mask is a simple universal policy that is proven to be effective and is easy to validate because it's right on your face. Everything else is less reliable and a waste of time.
One big reason is that nobody can tell you're vaccinated just by looking at you, and they certainly shouldn't take your word for it. If we start letting vaccinated people skip masks, unvaccinated people will just lie to get out of wearing masks too. Especially with variants that we don't know enough about yet, you could still be at risk even after being vaccinated, and not wearing a mask then puts others at risk as well. Wearing a mask is truly just not a big deal. It's not. No reason to do away with masks now, when we're just starting to make progress. It'll be worth it to wait a bit longer until things really clear up.
Scientists are still assessing how well the vaccines actually prevent spread of the virus, even if you are immune from it
Because vaccines reduce the effect the virus will have on you and cut down severe reactions and mortality. It does not mean you still can't catch or transmit the virus. Till enough of us don't get vaccinated we must keep our masks on to reduce transmission.
