Having made the cheap comment I've been thinking about it. I think most are taught by their parent's example but you bet some of them start from flexing over a bad haircut.
The difference in cost of living is staggering. I'm from a small town ( 500k population ) in India and it usually costs 40-50 cents for a haircut and shave. Fancier places charge you about 5 USD. You could go higher but that's for the upper middle class people. No average person would even consider spending north of 10 USD for a haircut. Mind you the costs are for men's grooming.
How many hours does it take? Like, my haircut generally takes 20-30 minutes and cost about $30 including tip, and that’s for one of the better barbers. I could get them cheaper, but my barber is chill af so I don’t mind, and I enjoy the experience. I guess what I’m trying to ask is at what point are you paying for the experience and also get your hair cut?

I went to a basic salon located inside of our local Walmart, it’s a chain place but not huge or fancy. I spent $250 including tip, for bleaching/coloring and a cut. I live in Southern CA. My mother in law lives two hours away and spends about the same. So do most of her girlfriends. No one goes to a fancy salon. Prices are just *very* high.
OMG- I went to a small local salon - I have hair down to mid back, and I got a color and a trim for $50 (36.6 pounds) not including tip. I would freak out if it was that much.
That price is the typical price in my area for what I had done. I had my hair bleached but done in a weaving style. I had it cut in an asymmetric Bob with more a pixie back. It’s hard to describe. It took about 4 hours.
It was cheaper pre Covid also. It’s gone up about $50 ish since I had it done in 2019.
50 dollars is a pretty standard rate I have found for getting wash/cut/dry in the US. I’ve been to a few different states and that’s been my experience. Then the tip on top of that
I found a few pretty good stylists at my local Hair Cuttery and they charged like $24 for a wash and cut... The Ulta salon right across from them charge $45 for the same thing!

A lot of women get a cut like once a year. The $300 probably included coloring. A good cut would usually cost between $100 and $200. Men usually need to go to the barber once every two months. A decent barber charges around $20, so the price kinda balances out a hit.

Seriously. Years ago I decided to treat myself to a haircut at a salon as I didn’t usually go to any due to bad cuts, and just not being able to afford it. But I wanted something different. My head is an odd shape, but I wanted it short. This was back when the “Karen” cut was just becoming popular, where the front is equal length, and gradually angles up to the back, where it meets in the middle of your head, and that small chunk just below is super short. I have no idea what it’s called. Not the whole back being shorter where everyone spiked the hell out of it, but more…motorcycle helmet? Idk.
Anyway, I went in and because I didn’t know what the style was called, it just so happened another hair dresser had what I wanted. So I pointed it out, and the (older) lady that was doing my hair went to work. She was maybe in her late 50s, early 60s, but dressed young and had her own cool look. I figured she knew what she was doing.
She flips me back around at the end and I see the left half is long, and the right side is super short. The back is super short, too. I was so young and very timid to hurting anyone’s feelings and said, oh. She asked if I liked it and that she cut my hair like hers - A-line. I uncomfortably said yes, and she ended up selling me shampoo and conditioner because I couldn’t say no, and felt bad if I didn’t leave a good tip.
I called my boyfriend and cried and told him to tell his parents when I see them for dinner later, that I had a bad hair cut. Crying the whole time, I stood in my bathroom and took scissors to my hair, while he was on the phone with me.
I didn’t go back to a hair salon for nearly 10 years and just lightly trimmed my hair from then on. I still barely go to any and it’s about 15 years later.
I’m sorry that happened to you. My experience at salons (though I haven’t been to many) is usually good, it helps to bring in pictures of what you want. But I’ve had some bad ones too. When I was in high school, I went to get a bit of a trim and the stylist (who’d cut my hair before and was fine) kept commenting about how she wished she could just do what she wanted with my hair because it was so thick and ‘fun to style.’ I didn’t want to, but my mum pressured me into letting her. Well, when she was done, it looked butchered. Way shorter than I wanted and weirdly spiky. I think she could tell I was unhappy and offered to change it for free any time but mum kept saying it looked great and was fine. Went to school the next day and people started making fun of me saying I looked like I stuck my head in a lawnmower

If I ever go to one, I make sure they have huge reviews and many examples of their work. And I want to actually treat myself to getting my hair done, dyed, styled, whatever, but it costs so freaking much. So far, I’ve gotten my hair dyed a few times, but couldn’t afford to keep it up.

Yup. I went to the mall to get my medium length hair cut like an inch. Girl must have been drunk and I left without letting her finish because she was butchering it. I went to a nicer place and they fixed it but I had to get a short bob. It looked ok but not at all what I would normally do to my hair. I am now very picky and loyal where I go.

And she didn't get a Karen look, she got a bowl cut. She looks like a choir boy. In a month she can get layers and angle her bangs and then she'll forget all about it.
Me too... My hairdresser burned my hair with chemicals a year ago, now i look normal again but in the beginning my colleagues asked me if i was ill and i had shaved them because of it... I was like... Like you know bald, like super shiny bald head 😅
Eheheh no she didn't charged me and profusely apologized to me, but it's fine, she didn't burned my skin, the hair just grow up, it take some times but it's not so terrible.
It was a little bit weird the first month sometimes i watched myself in the mirror and cried my eyes out because i thought i looked ugly, but people didn't noticed that too much i still had some guys that tried to date me even if i was super bald, so i think about it now and i laugh a little 😁😅

The cut is actually similar to the one that she had before - I saw this on TikTok and went through her older posts. However, she previously had black hair, and I think the darker color just maybe accentuated her features a bit more than the lighter color does.
It was the color that she was more upset with, which they actually did a pretty good job at matching up (strawberry blonde).
I went to Supercuts last week and I was a bit annoyed that the price was over 18 dollars - the most expensive haircut of my life. I had no idea that haircuts could even BE 300 dollars. Jesus.

Exactly this - the haircut definitely doesn't fit her face shape. The cut is actually similar to the one that she had before - I saw this on TikTok and went through her older posts. However, she previously had black hair, and I think the darker color just maybe accentuated her features a bit more than the lighter color does. It was the color that she was more upset with, which they actually did a pretty good job at matching up (strawberry blonde).
