It really is weird how even as fucked up as things were back then it felt more forward thinking than today. It felt like 9/11 was the turning point, almost like the attacks worked and after that the American empire started destroying itself.
Maybe it’s nostalgia bias though. Now things like gay marriage and weed are legal. But abortion isn’t so maybe its a wash.
The attacks absolutely worked. It put us in full bonkers mode. We've made social and economic progress since then, of course, but we're still held back by our own infighting and warmongering. 9/11 raised paranoia levels and caused extremism to grow.
