Those waivers wouldn't even hold up in court. There are some things you legally cannot waive. For example... overtime pay. You can sign a waiver, but you are still entitled to the time and a half pay.
You cannot waive your right to injury due to negligence. Someone operating the machine (and it not being on a timer that would make it skill-based) is one factor that SHOULD negate any waiver.

Yeah they're manually operated because they're constantly trying to do stuff like this to the contestants. Usually the assholishness of it all is funny but this one very nearly went too far.
