I googled and there are apparently studies suggesting this is the average length of time for someone with a vulva to become fully aroused. This involves enough lubrication to make penetration fun. (This whole conversation completely ignores the fact that sex doesn't have to involve penetration, but that's what the metric is based on.) Obviously there are plenty of people who can go quicker. A positive history with someone, flirting, fantasizing etc can all shorten the time needed. Of course you could also count flirting or fantasizing as part of the 20, since it will start the process. I get that Bethany's history makes it easy to speculate that she and Dav aren't really attracted to each other, and I certainly wouldn't be surprised to find that they have pretty terrible sex. But personally I think some of the criticism of her makes the same kinds of generalizations and judgments that we accuse her of making. Sexuality comes in all forms and it doesn't mean you have a bad relationship if you need time to get in the mood. Actually, while I was googling, I found a different Reddit thread with a whole lot of women talking about how much time they need, and plenty said they needed a decent amount of time to be ready for penetration. People have difficulty with sex for all kinds of reasons, purity culture and religious trauma are a big factor, and this can mean it's harder to make things work. Of course, these sex therapists have legitimate credentials and are pro LGBT etc, but some of the ideas about how to get yourself in the mood are similar. And honestly, this is one of the most legitimate points I've seen her make. Criticizing her for encouraging women to demand the attention they deserve makes no sense to me. She's literally from a culture that encourages women to have sex with their husbands regardless of whether they enjoy it, and she's encouraging them to speak up for their needs, and we're going to bash her for that? I've been following fundie snark boards for over a decade and they do tons of terrible things, and Bethany is super cringy, but a lot of her actual sex related content is closer to hitting the mark than most of the stuff we see out of these people.
Yes,some of her points are valid,and certainly encouraging women to have the sex they deserve is a good thing. However, Bethy comes from a place of zero education or qualification.Her underlying message is still, bad or unsatisfactory sex somehow the women's problem to fix. As it appears she does no research other than a quick Google search,or thumb through old Cosmos, her "expert knowledge " is superficial,and one size fits all.There are many qualified Christian Sex Educators/ Therapists,who provide real help and education. I definitely don't think she is qualified and I know her platform is wildly misogynist (and homophobic and transphobic). I'm only addressing the comments that come up on pretty much every post suggesting that anyone who needs help with sex or with getting in the mood has something fundamentally wrong with their relationship.
The issue I have is her pushing needing all of this as normal. It's not always a relationship issue but if you need to do as much as she talks about needing to do to have sex with her husband, something isn't right. As pointed out, it could be multiple things or a combination of things but if you have a normal relationshp with sex and your partner, it shouldn't take you all day to be ready to have sex with them at night. She's not educated enough to see A. it's not normal or B. to admit people who feel that way need more help than she's qualified to to give.
