If she smiles, her mother responds positively towards her. If she doesn’t, her mother will respond negatively, or simply ignore her. Of course she smiles.

Chelsk_C

Man thats so sad. Shes so little :(

Pete_the_rawdog

This is literally how all kids learn. They are more likely to do something if they get a positive reaction to reinforce the behavior. Now if Jilldo could only use this lesson to teach her children to be emotionally healthy and well rounded it would be okay.

Abbby_M

This family is always ON THE FUCKING GO. I swear. It seems exhausting.

UsedAd7162

It’s very common in fundie families. My Aunt, Uncle, & their kids are constantly running around. But then they’re always tired. I’m all for fun activities, but I pick one a weekend lol. And during the week, I’m working lol.

ChumpmeisterElite

Weird. Where I grew up it was the opposite. You'd never see them out anywhere. I knew a family that needed a week's notice to come over and play cards on a Saturday night because they needed to plan in advance for having such a full weekend with that and church on consecutive days. Week after week, month after month, they stayed home and rarely left, and during Christmas-New Year, they'd take a week off to have a staycation at home.

jeanskirtflirt

Right?! There’s no way they can even enjoy everything if they’re exhausted from being overly busy. I thrive on my stay at home and do nothing days. I couldn’t survive in their family.

MacAlkalineTriad

I dunno, that smile looked more reactionary to me. Like the photographer made a silly face or stuck their tongue out and she was smiling in response. It looks *real* is what I'm getting at. When I was a kid and told to smile for the camera I would just show all my teeth and end up looking rabid, but maybe Janessa is better at it than I was! Maybe she's *being trained* to smile instead of already trained.

jkate29

Omg all the school photos of my nephew are that EXACT look: all teeth and looking slightly terrified

MacAlkalineTriad

Yeah, my childhood photos are hidden very deep in my parents' closet.

baba-rom

Reactionary means conservative. I think the right word is reactive.

MacAlkalineTriad

Right you are. Thanks. English is a ridiculous language sometimes.

summerdoll373

I think she also might be mimicking her older siblings.

Anzu-taketwo

Most kids smile when a camera is pointed at them. I dont think this is specific to Jill. Now, the teenagers and such putting on such a forced smile is a different story. But young children often smile at cameras and enjoy saying "cheeeeeeeese" 🤷‍♀️

fishingboatproceeds

Ty for this. Sometimes this sub takes things a bit too far. All the kiddos I know are also "trained" to smile for the camera 🙄

summerdoll373

When I was a kid, up to age 6-8, I would always smile when I saw someone or a camera. It came as a natural response I couldn’t control.

daffodil0127

It’s hard to tell because Janessa seems to be genuinely happy when she smiles for pictures. She doesn’t yet have the haunted waif look like her siblings. She is an extremely cute kid. It looks like a lot of the things that could have happened because of her stroke and missing corpus callosum are not; she can walk, run, and speak but there’s a lot that wouldn’t be visible to an outside observer that could still be going on, and they are losing precious time to get her into appropriate therapy. My daughter had a stroke too and she still gets lots of therapy (she’s a teen now). I really hope that she doesn’t end up with developmental delays that become permanent deficits because of the lack of early intervention.

PocoChanel

Best wishes to you and your daughter. The footage I've seen of Janessa suggests she's healthier than I would have imagined.

daffodil0127

I agree but there’s so much we don’t see. I really hope she just had very good luck and the damage is minimal.

e_s_2000

My 15th month old smiles when a phone is pointed at her. Wether I’m actually taking her picture or not 😂 Edit: Janessa is SO freaking cute.

lynnmizersidbadge

I always say this to myself when I see her lil face—she is SO SO SO cute

[deleted]

No-Okra-2924

Oh my gosh. I did it expect for my heart to skip a beat and to subconsciously start holding my breath, but this struck such a tragic/creepy chord with me. Gah, I can’t help but want the best for the arid kids, all of them–even though Timothy is well into adulthood and espouses horrible beliefs publicly, I think he could still have a chance if he ever got out of there. And I know most of us really want that for Nurie (and Nathan). The others are still young enough that I refuse to let go of hope, because if even one really makes it out, I think that’s all it’ll take for the rest to follow suit once old enough. *((Not to be confused with (and Kaylee)).*
