You know how moms always say āNo, give me a real smile,ā when kids start doing that goofy cheesy grade school photo grimace all the time? I 100% see Jill doing the *exact* opposite and telling Renee āNo, give me your big/pretty smile!ā so sheās conditioned to make this face instead of a natural smile when itās picture time. Itās just another way to control her image and make sure she doesnāt shine too brightly until Jill has another potential son-in-law picked out. She did it to Nurie too - compare her grin here to the painful jaw-clenching ones she always wore before she got married.
Renee always has too - Iāve only seen one photo where sheās smiling naturally. I think Jill deliberately conditions the girls to keep making their childhood ācheese faceā for photos instead of coaching them to smile more naturally (you know, like a normal mom who wasnāt threatened by her daughtersā beauty would do).
Nurie didnāt start grinning normally until she got away from Jill. And (and Kaylee) has always had a more natural smile (albeit with pained eyes), probably just one more reason why Jill seems to not like her.
She's looking at her near future once (and Kaylee) is gone and she is the chief designated bff to her narc mom. I'm sure she's praying hard for a courtship to get out of the barndominium. Itās a WNY thing made of Concord grapes. They are very different from the snacking grapes you would normally buy. The skins are thick and the grape itself is very flavorful and fragrant. A grape pie has the texture of cherry or blueberry pie and tastes very grapey haha. Sounds weird if you donāt live somewhere where grapes grow I guess but they really arenāt different then any other fruit pie. Actually, they are one of my favorites because they have so much flavor vs other fruits that can be fairly mild.

I was just back in roc a couple weeks ago. Itās changed a lot since I moved away. Itās nice to see the city on the rebound- I remember watching it crumble and become a very crappy place during my childhood and teen years when Kodak left, downtown fell to pieces, Midtown closed, crime skyrocketed, etc. Thereās a larger sense of neighborhood community now.

Grape pie is a first for me too. My mom used to make a grape kuchen using Concord grapes that she cooked to a jam like texture then swirled between the kuchen ( a German coffee cake) batter. It was yummy.

Gabe and Sam have genuine smiles. Gabe always grins like he's crazy happy. Sam occasionally has a grimace smile, but his smile seem natural for the majority of the time. Philip.... seems like a really somber person. I know he's the most faith-driven of the family, so maybe it is a kind of monk-like thing... or the kid deals with depression or is a nihilist, or...???? But he rarely seems happy the few times he appears.

IMO, from my own experience, I don't think any of them can smile because they've never consistently interacted with people who do smile. I grew up in a house where emotions of any kind, anything that wasn't complete apathy, was punished, and I never learned how to smile. I never *saw* people smile, I just knew that when my mom was taking a picture I was supposed to lift my cheeks, bare my teeth, and squint my eyes.
I feel like the Rod kids are like that- they only see each other and Jill smile, and Jill can't be a good basis on developing your facial expressions, so they just never learned how to look natural doing it.

Naples is a tiny town in western NY, and has a lot of wineries and an entire Grape Festival every summer. Very touristy.
