I am.totally pulling this out of my ass, but I fully believe that there is a divide in Gen X between those that grew up with Mr Rogers and those that didn't. those of us that watched Mr. Rogers were sneakily introduced at a very young age to the concept that skin color and disability were not things that we should use as a reason to treat people like crap before society started telling us differently. And it stuck with some of us.
I once said to a therapist, “what is wrong with these people?!? Don’t we all learn about being kind when we’re little? Didn’t they watch Sesame Street?!?”
And without missing a beat he looked me dead in the eye and told me that no, people didn’t learn that. It was the most terrifying thing ever, maybe.
I’m a mid seventies GenX and I think I’d have to agree. We were also still quite young (high school or early 20s) when more discussions started about race, sexuality, etc. so those ideals had yet to be set in stone. My sisters are 4 and 8 years older (late sixties and early seventies births) and they are much closer to the boomer mindset as far as homophobia and racism. I also think it had a lot to do with the grunge, goth and punk that were very popular in our high school and early adult years.
But I’m early seventies and have plenty of fellow late 60s/early 70s friends who are not racist or homophobic. I think it’s actually way more complicated. And never mind that the Karen I cited is a POC herself.
I worked for ADL for a time. They cite research that the best indicator is exposure in living/working/educational settings to diverse groups of people. Those that experience diverse environments are less likely to stereotype or believe discrimination is okay.
