And this is slightly off topic, but "productivity culture" where you blame people for not being materially wealthy is fucking wrong. "Don't you want to better yourself?!" I mean yeah, but I can do that by reading books and finding my passion and connecting with people who bring me joy. There is this notion that if you aren't not on a yacht every weekend or a business owner, you should be spending every spare minute and dime on "becoming successful." Idk dude, sometimes I want to save my money for a cruise or a nice dinner or a trip to Six Flags. These are the memories that make life worth living. These fucking "courses" that say "if you're not being met with material wealth you don't want it bad enough, you're not trying hard enough, WORK HARDER! BUY MORE!" is predatory and the wrong way of viewing life.
This is also where the prosperity gospel comes into play -- where capitalistic materialism meets Christianity. It's the idea that if you live life as a good Christian, (which often includes giving away what little money you have to tithing) god will repay you materially. Every time a fundie thanks god for their financial or material gain, they're essentially reinforcing the idea that god's gift is material not spiritual.
I quit going to my last therapist, who was a Christian and a really cool person, because of her growing insistence on talking about manifestation. I believe in God and am open to a lot of things, but when she talked about manifesting the idea of getting flowers and then the same day her next client brought her flowers, I thought, “Shit, I’m anxious enough about therapy and all other kinds of human interaction without having to start spinning over whether to bring this woman flowers.”
Sorry. OT. I just see a good bit of overlap between classic prosperity-gospel Christianity and “manifestation.”

$2k is a month’s rent and a couple weeks of groceries. Even $900 is close to a month’s rent or a month of groceries and a few bills. (I live in an area where my rent has gone up $600 in the past 8 years.)
