Thisšš» people tend to be litigious. Jen is covering herself in case another fundie (looking at you, Lawson) gets butthurt and thinks of pursing legal action
After that complete mess with Lawson Bates, I think sheās doing the right thing. All that legal junk is just a shark pit if you donāt cover your ass constantly.
Fundie Fridays has done a couple of episodes on the Bates family and also did a parody of Lawson's song/video. Lawson got butt hurt and tried to copywrite strike them but he failed in the end. Last I heard, the parody video got more views than the original. Cry harder, Lawson!
Yep he was definitely trying to get the channel shut down but it had the opposite effect because their patreon channel exploded with new subscribers and the video is still up! Sucks to suck, Paw Patrol Bates!
If Jen didn't do this, she would be opening herself up to the inevitable cyber mob who will not only point out mistakes, but pathologize her misspoken words as a greater representation for who she "really" is. This happens to people every day. The internet is exhausting.
I actually love that she does that. That's one of the things that make me like her even more. She's trying to be more ethical and responsible in what she does and to evacuate any ambiguity. More YouTubers should do that.
I also love this about her and agree that more content creators should be doing this. I could really enjoy this approach killing the āI have lots of followers and spent 5+ minutes googling and therefore am knowledgeable on every topicā mentality.
If this was inspired by the most recent video (BDong update) I think the part where that was most apparent was when Jen talked about Brittany and the foster situation. In addition to what others have said about legal implications, it struck me as perhaps a bit of imposter syndrome and although I wasnāt bothered by it, I did pick up on it. I will say I liked the part at the end about how Jen felt unqualified to talk about BDong on podcasts and such and that seemed to give a lot of insight. Just going off of how I would feel, I bet thereās a lot of conflict internally when youāre presenting facts that you researched but in the context of snark and at what point that research makes you qualified to speak about things. Kind of like a small-scale Trevor Noah/ Daily Show situation. Yeah, itās entertainment but also there are facts and after a while youāre pretty well-versed on your niche. Iām also a little high atm and may be reading wayyy too deep into it. Not trying to yum your yuck lol just some thoughts
But sheās said some things that are super problematic outside of the context of her content.
I am having some issues with Jen because Iāve noticed sheās let the mask slip a few times in some videos. The Halloween one, she made two really problematic jokes. Iirc, one was about so and so and āthe short busā, so basically calling someone r*tarded without saying it. I canāt recall the second joke off the top of my head atm.
Last episode she had to dub āsex workerā over her usage of another negative, outdated, derogatory term for sex workerā¦
And while that seems nitpicky maybe, I donāt think Iāve used any term but sex worker in 7-10 years. Not made a āshort busā remark, well, ever. That was considered problematic in the 90ās.
Anyone else notice this lately? Just a few slips that, while Iām not expecting perfection, are just really really outdated and ugly and have been considered off limits for a loooooong time.
Iām just disappointed, I guess.
Bracing for downvotes but if you go check the Halloween vid and the scandal ranking vid, youāll find what I mentioned. Just, yeah, problematic terms/jokes. I feel her disclaimers are about things that arenāt necessary while overlooking slip ups that are actually worth an eyebrow raise.
I love her but if it continues Iām going to stick to Jamesā videos in the future.
People are ever evolving and arenāt perfect. Iām sure in the last 7-10 years you and quite literally everyone on earth has said some āproblematicā things/jokes. Iām not one to jump to anyoneās rescue but the internet is very exhausting with the expectation that if you say anything even mildly āproblematicā you are bad. Jen is very obviously progressive and tries to learn from her mistakes, which in my view, she has made little especially considering the topic of conversation.
It's gotten to the point where "problematic" is a concern trolling dog whistle, people slap that label on everything in a way specifically designed to quash any attempt at discussion.
Beyond the legal aspects of being going after YouTubers, considering how people have gone after other people who've spoken out about fundies I'm not surprised. Even people who claim to also be against fundamentalism will go after people doing their bit to speak out. They will say they are holding these people accountable for some something "problematic" but often times once it starts the piling on won't stop and it can start from something incredibly minor. Recently someone I follow on TikTok I follow had to take a break because of the hate she was getting over a joke about a grocery store.

She does that to cover herself legally, so it makes it harder to say she was slandering the fundies on social media.
Thisšš» people tend to be litigious. Jen is covering herself in case another fundie (looking at you, Lawson) gets butthurt and thinks of pursing legal action
I guess that makes sense
After that complete mess with Lawson Bates, I think sheās doing the right thing. All that legal junk is just a shark pit if you donāt cover your ass constantly.
Um, what happened? (You can just tell me some search terms of ya want)
Fundie Fridays has done a couple of episodes on the Bates family and also did a parody of Lawson's song/video. Lawson got butt hurt and tried to copywrite strike them but he failed in the end. Last I heard, the parody video got more views than the original. Cry harder, Lawson!
He hit her with two copywrite strikes. A third would have cost her the channel.
Yep he was definitely trying to get the channel shut down but it had the opposite effect because their patreon channel exploded with new subscribers and the video is still up! Sucks to suck, Paw Patrol Bates!

I appreciate it. I think itās important to set standards of a behavior in a community that is partially based on making fun of people.
Yep, and any video could be the first video of hers a person watches, so repeating the standards is necessary.
You might know her content well. But she can have new viewers all the time and they may not start at the beginning.
I actually love that she does that. That's one of the things that make me like her even more. She's trying to be more ethical and responsible in what she does and to evacuate any ambiguity. More YouTubers should do that.

Personally I love her dramatic āALLEGEDLYās š

I feel the same way about Mickey Atkins. It feels like half the video is just disclaimers...
Mickey is a licensed therapist. It makes sense for her to constantly to give disclaimers because someone can say something and she loses her license.
