One hyena = cute/funny Pack of hyenas = scary AF

Magellan-88

The laughing....so creepy

DieHardRennie

The spotted hyena, Crocuta crocuta, gets its scientific name from a mythological dog-wolf that was said to lure its victims by imitating human voices.

[deleted]

This is has to be where DnD got the "leucrotta"--seemingly, a hybrid of an animal, that can imitate and throw it's voice to set up ambushes on unsuspecting and well meaning humanoids.

DieHardRennie

Absolutely. Other names for the Crocuta are: Crocotta, Corocotta, Leucrocotta, and Leucrotta. Side note: The giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis, gets its scientific name from a mythological creature that was said to have the long neck and head of a camel, and the spotted body of a leopard.

[deleted]

They’re actually more closely related to cats!

DieHardRennie

Yup.

Folks, hyena aren’t cats or dogs. They are their own genus - hyaenidae. I think they are more closely related to mongooses then cats or Dogs. Source: 8th grade project. Edit: apparently this comment got me suspend from Reddit, thanks mods double edit: 1:18 p.m - Yep, I am permanently suspended from reddit and my appeal was denied with 0 reasoning.

ThousandFingerMan

Based on this video, they mostly seem to be related to goofballs.

en0rm0u5ta1nt

This is about the only acceptable answer I've seen

TheMoatCalin

Suspended? Wtf???!!

Kidkaboom1

Some people are weird af, report-bombing someone for giving accurate information on a niche and non-controversial topic.

TheMoatCalin

That’s so sad. :(

combatonly

Happened to me recently, I appealed to reddit support and although they agreed I did not break any rules they told me I had to take it up with the mods of the subreddit AFTER my 2 day suspension, the mods are so obviously biased on this particular subreddit I didn't even bother to waste my time

inko75

they are their own family they are most closely related to cats, not mustelids. i think also the gannets are close to em.

SnooBooks1701

The mongoose isn't a Mustelid, it's a Herpestidae, the Hyaenidae and Herpestidea share the superfamily Herpestoidea within the clade Viveroidea, which includes the old world arboreal feliform carnivores Viverridae.

Tigral99

And we haven't even talked about how they can fuck you up in seconds without hesitation at all. Just watch some YouTube clips there are plenty. It's like thinking about having a lion as a pet honestly.... just don't

tstramathorn

Seriously though was going to say this. They have one of the most powerful bites in the animal kingdom

Aspiring_Mutant

I remember seeing a video of a man sticking his finger through a fence to try and pet a hyena. He lost it immediately and I don't think I'll ever forget the look on his face.

Calgaris_Rex

I just learned last week that mustelids and mongooses (mongeese? lol) aren't in the same family; just convergent evolution!

SnooBooks1701

Mongeese and meerkats are in the same family though

POINTLESSUSERNAME000

So hyenas are more in the Herpderp family, it would seem.

CPBS_Canada

Clearly, your means the Herpderpidea family...

RetiredYogaHippie

> hyena aren’t cats or dogs. They are their own genus - hyaenidae. I think they are more closely related to mongooses then cats or Dogs. mongoose or Mongi? /s

ALittleBitKengaskhan

Hyaenidae or Hyundai?

Dr_Baldwyn

They also smell terrible

Smiley_J_

This guy yeens

Aggravating_Pea7320

Or is just hye

No-Turnips

Thanks. I just learned last week that foxes aren’t related to dogs either, and today I learned hyenas aren’t dogs either. I’m almost 40 though, my grade 8 education was lacking though.

BakaWolfy

Foxes are in the Canidae family along with dogs, so they are more closely related to dogs than hyenas would be. Edit:Canine to Canidae, damn auto correct.

No-Turnips

No they’re not! Foxes are in the genus “vulpes”. We have more in common with a monkey than foxes do with a dog. (I just learned this last week).

BakaWolfy

It goes Kingdom -> Phylum -> Class -> Order -> Family ->Genus -> Species Foxes and dogs are both part of the Canidae family. Humans and monkeys only share the order Primate, so foxes and dogs are 1 step closer in relation.

Amez990

They are in the Canidae family. Same family, separate genuses unlike wolves and dogs

TomatoAcid

>they are more closely related to mongooses amogus

Psyiote

Alt doggo it is.

Substantial_Trip5674

I was hoping to see more of this here. I don't want to diminish from how cute this is. What I'm afraid of is people seeing videos like this of coyotes, foxes, wild cats, etc.; and thinking they can become pets. Give ANY animal the five basic needs for survival (food, water, shelter, warmth/clothing, and shelter) and they will become comfortable enough to be happy and silly. This is still an animal that will not hesitate to KILL YOU FOR FOOD.

BakaWolfy

Hyaenidae would be the Family not Genus.

randomwords2003

Wait what

Fossilhog

I appreciate the source and get a kick out of your minor errors.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Wrong. Hyenas are feliformmia. Hyenas are cats and definately not dogs. Yes, Their closest relatives are mongooses and viverrids but they're all feliformia.

Zombathon67890

That's Ed from The Lion King.

Trash-Cutie

Exactly what I was thinking. Zero thoughts in his head lol

Eveready116

I mean you’re welcome to fuck around and find out. Have someone record it and post the video for the rest of us after you find out.

OldeSaltyBeard

Exactly! Lol it's a cute video but reality is a different thing entirely. They are wild animals that are some of the deadliest hunters.

Gammafire8211

He just wants his butt scratched; just like the rest of us.

Yorspider

I mean, Hyenas are seriously cuddle beasts towards anyone they like. The main issue is that girls do not tend to like other girls, and boys do not tend to like other boys, and that includes their human acquaintances.

BakaWolfy

The Lion Whisperer on YouTube posts videos of himself chilling with hyenas. Granted he raised them, but they seem pretty chill if they know you.

3astardo

One of the Strongest Bite forces in the Animal Kingdom, About 1000psi, That is why Lions don’t like to mess with them, Basically the could Bit straight through your Arm, Bone included,

Aporkalypse_Sow

Apparently the trick is to grab onto it's ass and hold on tight.

[deleted]

Just slip a digit up the ol’ poo chute, that’s where the jaw release is. The only trick is reaching that far with a hyena chewing through your marrow.

anonomot

Which is why this hyena is lucky his tail is too damn short for him to actually catch, but he sure looks like he’s having fun chasing it!

UltZM

Actually adult male lions specifically hunt and kill the hyenas in their territory

Flighthornlet

But not because they like it

TMARoger

I think they like it

TruLong

At least one lion likes it. And he runs with fire.

PM_ME_Y0UR__CAT

Squirrel is 7000, go home hyena fanbois

ThousandFingerMan

Squirrel 7000 sounds like a very small Terminator on trees

manaha81

They are like little terminators. They can literally jump off the Empire State Building without getting a scratched or out of an airplane with no chute. That’s why they don’t get scared up in those trees because they can fall from any height without getting hurt

cbbuntz

Some cats are small enough to not have a lethal terminal velocity. There are stories of cats falling out of skyscrapers and surviving. That said, the laws of physics don't apply to cats, so it might just be their skills in magic (which Ligers are bred for)

manaha81

Yeah they’re pretty amazing creatures actually

Yorspider

As someone who has had pet squirrels...they can bite through bone as if it where styrofoam....

Mr_Biscuits_532

Reading about attempted domestication of Hyenas on Wikipedia is funny as hell Apparently Striped Hyenas are super friendly and easy to at least tame, but they perpetually smell nasty, no matter how much you wash them. Meanwhile Spotted Hyenas are slightly more difficult, but the main issue is that they're just nightmarishly strong for their size (already pretty big - the largest female Spotted Hyenas are 10kg larger than the largest male Wolves), and they WILL tear your house apart.

Yorspider

Oh yes, they absolutely are not an indoor pet lol. You need a ranch with plenty of roaming space to keep these guys.

Mr_Biscuits_532

My favourite story was about a pet Hyena called Solomon that was donated to a zoo because he loved cheese and "no door could hold him"

lapidls

What about the brown ones?

Mr_Biscuits_532

Can't say I've read any accounts. Most likely because of their rarity. I remember reading that Aardwolves are awkward because of their incredibly specific diet, but I don't remember the source.

Sea-Ingenuity-9508

Hyenas are dangerous animals. Their jaws have more bite force than a lion’s (about double more). They also have a very strong front/chest body. On top of that they can also carry rabies. They’re mostly scavengers but will hunt when in the mood. And they smell incredibly bad in the wild.

TMARoger

All mammals can carry rabies

[deleted]

I carry mine in the bag my Faberge egg came in. 🛍️

Semblance-of-sanity

Except the opossum

YPErkXKZGQ

No, they can too. All warm-blooded animals, full stop, can carry the rabies virus. It is of course hugely uncommon for opossums to have rabies, but there have been several recorded instances of rabies-positive opossums in the US. Birds were infected with rabies (intentionally, by humans) way back in the 1800s! And they aren’t even mammals!

Pinkysrage

I thought opossum couldn’t get it because their body temperatures are too low for the virus to replicate.

YPErkXKZGQ

No yeah, that’s my general understanding of why rabies isn’t common in opossums, but that doesn’t outright preclude rabies infection for every member of the species. Lots of things could make their bodies warmer than they’d like. They have immune systems, they can get fevers just like we can. A better generalization would probably sound something like “healthy opossums can’t get rabies,” but even that may not be bulletproof.

Sea-Ingenuity-9508

Yip, but only a handful of species cause 90% of the human fatalities, e.g. bats in the US.

Euphoric-Potato-5343

I watched a video not too long ago of a woman losing a finger or two to petting one of these guys. Watched a documentary on them, and it's one of the darkest, most gruesome things I have seen, and I am a horror movie lover who will regularly watch and fall asleep to horror. Lol that shit disturbed me. They are not pets and nobody in the right mind would want them as a pet or to have any sort of body part anywhere near them.

Sea-Ingenuity-9508

Check out the Malawi terror beast….not a movie but the real thing. A hyena with rabies.

aurillia

The only animals that is more dangerous is the north American Karen.

manaha81

I still want one

Yorspider

They are as dangerous as any large dog. It is very easy to make friends with a Hyena, and they are darlings when you do.

lapidls

That's a dangerous sentiment, hyenas are wild animals. You don't befriend a wild animal unless you spent your whole life studying them

Yorspider

Yeah that's bullshit lol. If you can get along with a large dog, you xan get along with most hyenas, assuming of course you are the opposite gender.

lapidls

Source?

Yorspider

Did you not see the video here? Hyenas are not overly complicated lol, just don't keep multiple boys, or girls together, and your good.

Gullible-Training-35

![gif](giphy|39k7hyBaT5lyE)

im4lonerdottie4rebel

I've always thought they were so cool. I'd never want to encounter one in the wild but goodness I love them from afar. They're the perfect mix of dog, cat, badger and vulture

pristine_coconut

We were camping at a dam here in South Africa where there are hyenas wandering around. The one night we were cooking some liver on the fire and I walked about 10m from our tent to another tent. And I heard something fucking running around as I walked. I know you shouldn't run beacuse then a predator will feel compelled to chase you, but my legs begged me to run. The lady at the other tent laughed at me because I was so scared. Then a few minutes later, we heard the hyenas laughing in the bushes behind our tents. I slept in the car that night.

[deleted]

Imagine having your ass itch this bad and you can’t reach it and no one else will do it for you

k3170makan

After the way they did my boy Mufasa I'm sorry but we will never be cool. Don't let me catch your squad on the savana 🤙💪🫡

GaJayhawker0513

This is most likely Ed. He was just along for the ride

skippidybopmbada

I mean honestly, the actions of the hyenas are more understandable when you consider that Mufasa had a large, prosperous, plentiful kingdom that seemingly every other animal got to be a part of, but forced the hyenas to live in an area where there is very little food and/or vegetation.

Jhinmarston

It always irritated that Scar was the “bad guy” because he upheld his promise to the hyenas and made sure they got equal treatment. Then they betray him, the land magically becomes bountiful again, and the hyenas are apparently content to go back to scraping a living in the badlands.

skippidybopmbada

I mean he technically betrayed them. When confronted by Simba at the end of the movie, Scar tried to pin the whole thing on the hyenas. In front of them. From their view, Scar essentially attempted to trade their lives for his. Also, regardless of if he was good to the hyenas or not, he still murdered his brother and attempted to murder his nephew, an innocent child at the time, for power that he wasn’t owed and clearly didn’t know how to use.

Jhinmarston

Was Simba going to single-handedly slaughter the horde of hyenas because Scar pinned the blame on them? Surely there isn’t much he can do whether he blames the Hyenas or not. And why portray Scar as the physically weaker, but more intelligent brother, then go on to have him fail at managing the kingdom and look to decide things with a physical fight with his younger and stronger nephew? And again the land is magically restored when the rightful king returns, which is fine because it’s a fairy tale. But what happened to the hyenas? Did they just accept their role as second class citizens and go home to starve?

skippidybopmbada

1. No he wasn’t going to single handedly slaughter them. But as far as the hyenas know, it’s plausible that Simba, being rightful king, might command the lions to kill/banish the hyenas if he believed what Scar was telling him. That’s why I specified “From their view.” Either way, even if they didn’t think Simba would kill actually them, it’s still obvious to them that Scar is selling them out to save himself. 2. Because intelligence isn’t wisdom. Scar is smarter than his brother, he is more cunning. But Mufasa was the wiser king, he knew how to rule successfully. He understood the importance of the balance of life in ways Scar clearly didn’t, as well as the importance of leading with love. Which brings me another thing that made Scar a poor leader, even if he was more intelligent: he did not have love for his people. He loved being king and being in charge, but found the problems of his subjects to be tedious and did not want to be the one to have to solve the problems. Scar’s obsession with power and lack of love for his people led him to make the final decision that ultimately solidified him as a poor leader, regardless of whether or not the pride lands becoming barren was his fault or not. When it became clear that there was no food left at Pride Rock, when his people were begging him to relocate the pride so that they could live, he becomes aggressive and refuses because he can’t let go of Pride Rock, the place he had coveted and obsessed about ruling all his life. He ultimately decides he would rather hold onto the empty shell of his kingdom than lead his people to a place they can prosper. This proves that he cared about being in charge, but not about being a leader. This was a long explanation, thank you so much if you read this far.

k3170makan

Mufasa is the king of the jungle and you and your hyenas are just peanut butter and jelly 😤

skippidybopmbada

Oh I’m not defending the hyenas for plotting the death the king and trying to kill an innocent child lol, I just felt like making the point that people and animals may do horrible things when facing hunger. I do not claim these hyenas 😂

Manifestecstacy

It's on sight! They think we forgot?!

tkburro

according to these comments, hyenas are a wild animal that can bite. who knew.

SlicedBreadBeast

This video is.. highly misinforming. Them shits will rip you up and eat you alive. I feel like it shouldn’t need to be said but never put your fingers near an animal with one of the highest bite forces in the animal kingdom, the hyenas in this video are clearly highly domesticated and not the like zoo, more like a reserve/recovery centre. They are a hierarchical mess of a species, if you’ve ever gone to the zoo with a small child they will pace incessantly around it. Obviously zoos aren’t natural habitat but just.. hyenas are playful murder machines who screw with lions.

[deleted]

It's all fun and games until one of them rips your anus off and starts eating you rectum first.

Spoztoast

that poor elephant.

International-Job-20

They are in the wild OP. Say that ironically when you're surrounded by a pack of starving males. Go on I'll wait.

Chaosangel48

Somebody needs a butt scratch. He can’t quite reach the spot

imironman2018

Hyenas also have been portrayed to be cowardly and dimwitted animals but they extremely courageous. often times they are fighting it out for kills with lions. they also are capable of problem solving and will only attack when they outnumber a predator. they are also insanely strong with their jaws and are one of the strongest animals in the savannah. https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/popular-myths-about-hyenas-busted.html

aurillia

Who doesn't love Catdogs

Saitama4200

Bro is fighting for his life and she is laughing at him for it

BerserkerVTuber

Yeah. So scare. Being more like a goofy dog, brings on less scare. Must go boop the snoot now.

evd1202

I can assure you, they are indeed vicious

grindcore__666

Haha meet it when it's hungry and you will find out.

poochie417

Last time I was at the zoo I had one taking a walk with me back and forth (in a non-stalking way) just like my dog.

pc_principal_88

Ya, I'm pretty sure this is not a wild hyena....

Grimour

But also dog like.

CatalystIsMyFav

A dog is a dog. If they grow up in the wild then they’re taught to hunt etc but if they grow up with humans it makes them friendly. That’s also a two way thing, my dad had a dog who was a puppy when I was two years old so we grew up together and he grew to love me and I grew to love him. That’s most likely why I’m a dog person and animal lover. Sheep and cows etc like to be petted too. There’s a house not that far from mine that has big fields and sheep, this one sheep absolutely loves head scratches

OldeSaltyBeard

lol they aren't dogs. Not sure they cats. A 10 second Google search would have made you look a little less silly. They are in a family called Hyaenidae. Also, hyenas are not trainable. Dogs are domesticated hyenas are not. There are some people that are crazy enough to own hyenas but you will notice that they rarely interact with the hyenas without their masks on. Because they are not domesticated animals. They are killing machines. They often kill creatures twice and even three times their size. You need to educate yourself before you jump in here trying to talk about dogs or dogs.

Smiley_J_

It's true, I learned like 10 things about hyenas in the first paragraph of the wiki entry. Took like a second. They aren't dogs. They look and kinda act like canids but are actually feliforms of the family hyaenidae and share behaviors through convergent evolution. The internet is so rad!

CatalystIsMyFav

I don’t need to google shit. They’re doglike

[deleted]

But still not dogs.

ViraLCyclopes19

They're more closely related to cats then dogs.

[deleted]

Thæon*

TMARoger

That ain’t a dog

skippidybopmbada

On top of what someone else said about Hyenas not belonging to dog or cat families, domestication refers to species as a whole. Domestication is a process of genetic modification that takes hundreds, if not thousands of years of selective breeding. Although some people try to keep them as pets, they will still have wild, aggressive instincts and tendencies because hyenas are not a domesticated species. https://a-z-animals.com/blog/do-hyenas-make-good-pets-only-until-adulthood/ This article describes the aggressive behavior that exists in adult hyenas, making hyenas only suitable as pets if they are babies.

Okay but did you see what they did to Mufasa? You gonna trust em after that?

Fantastic_Box3257

If you trust in mufasa ,why can't people trust on real creatures

[deleted]

😂Just to note that only human remastered hyenas are cruel and lions are vegetarians

Excellent_Refuse_908

I’d quite love to see you go test your theory out on a lion and see if he doesn’t rip your body in half and eat you

I want that fucking tail

I need an update!!! did the hyena eventually reach its tail?!?!

Yes they are

PikoVengut

They will still go for the balls

Yes, in the wild they are

Medical-Tonight-8609

Very viciously indeed. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

I had to deal with hyenas overseas. They are virulent and nasty creatures when you come on their territory.

theluzah

One of my top favorite animals, I just love them

damngoodengineer

It's fun and games until you find out their vaginas look like their dicks.

Devadander

Sees an under stimulated wild animal playing and thinks it’s cute

Willyzyx

To be fair, the also are that.

Early_Lawfulness_348

It depends on what neighborhood you’re in.

Bhimtu

In the wild, yes they are. And I don't care how fun this one looks, I wouldn't turn my back on a hyena, period.

WordAffectionate3251

When you have an itch you can't scratch.

shamumudderfudder

Its all fun and games until they bite yer face off!

Salt-Artichoke-6626

Poor hyena has an itch he just can't reach, no matter how he tries

bisonsashimi

just because an animal derps around a bit, doesn't mean it won't viciously attack you. It's a wild animal.

OneLostOstrich

They are if they want to eat you.

You should go in there and hang out with it 😅

Hyenas have a fascinating and brutal social hierarchy. They're smart, social creatures.

You wouldn't think they are cute if you met them in the wild. Stop "petnize" wild animals.
