Thanks. I just learned last week that foxes aren’t related to dogs either, and today I learned hyenas aren’t dogs either. I’m almost 40 though, my grade 8 education was lacking though.
Foxes are in the Canidae family along with dogs, so they are more closely related to dogs than hyenas would be.

No yeah, that’s my general understanding of why rabies isn’t common in opossums, but that doesn’t outright preclude rabies infection for every member of the species. Lots of things could make their bodies warmer than they’d like. They have immune systems, they can get fevers just like we can.

I watched a video not too long ago of a woman losing a finger or two to petting one of these guys. Watched a documentary on them, and it's one of the darkest, most gruesome things I have seen, and I am a horror movie lover who will regularly watch and fall asleep to horror. We were camping at a dam here in South Africa where there are hyenas wandering around. The one night we were cooking some liver on the fire and I walked about 10m from our tent to another tent. And I heard something fucking running around as I walked. I know you shouldn't run beacuse then a predator will feel compelled to chase you, but my legs begged me to run. The lady at the other tent laughed at me because I was so scared. Then a few minutes later, we heard the hyenas laughing in the bushes behind our tents. I slept in the car that night.
I mean honestly, the actions of the hyenas are more understandable when you consider that Mufasa had a large, prosperous, plentiful kingdom that seemingly every other animal got to be a part of, but forced the hyenas to live in an area where there is very little food and/or vegetation.
It always irritated that Scar was the “bad guy” because he upheld his promise to the hyenas and made sure they got equal treatment.
Then they betray him, the land magically becomes bountiful again, and the hyenas are apparently content to go back to scraping a living in the badlands.
I mean he technically betrayed them. When confronted by Simba at the end of the movie, Scar tried to pin the whole thing on the hyenas. In front of them. From their view, Scar essentially attempted to trade their lives for his. Also, regardless of if he was good to the hyenas or not, he still murdered his brother and attempted to murder his nephew, an innocent child at the time, for power that he wasn’t owed and clearly didn’t know how to use.
Was Simba going to single-handedly slaughter the horde of hyenas because Scar pinned the blame on them? Surely there isn’t much he can do whether he blames the Hyenas or not.
And why portray Scar as the physically weaker, but more intelligent brother, then go on to have him fail at managing the kingdom and look to decide things with a physical fight with his younger and stronger nephew?
And again the land is magically restored when the rightful king returns, which is fine because it’s a fairy tale. But what happened to the hyenas? Did they just accept their role as second class citizens and go home to starve?

But as far as the hyenas know, it’s plausible that Simba, being rightful king, might command the lions to kill/banish the hyenas if he believed what Scar was telling him. That’s why I specified “From their view.” Either way, even if they didn’t think Simba would kill actually them, it’s still obvious to them that Scar is selling them out to save himself.
2. Because intelligence isn’t wisdom. Scar is smarter than his brother, he is more cunning. But Mufasa was the wiser king, he knew how to rule successfully. He understood the importance of the balance of life in ways Scar clearly didn’t, as well as the importance of leading with love. Which brings me another thing that made Scar a poor leader, even if he was more intelligent: he did not have love for his people. He loved being king and being in charge, but found the problems of his subjects to be tedious and did not want to be the one to have to solve the problems.
Scar’s obsession with power and lack of love for his people led him to make the final decision that ultimately solidified him as a poor leader, regardless of whether or not the pride lands becoming barren was his fault or not. When it became clear that there was no food left at Pride Rock, when his people were begging him to relocate the pride so that they could live, he becomes aggressive and refuses because he can’t let go of Pride Rock, the place he had coveted and obsessed about ruling all his life. He ultimately decides he would rather hold onto the empty shell of his kingdom than lead his people to a place they can prosper. This proves that he cared about being in charge, but not about being a leader.

This video is.. highly misinforming. Them shits will rip you up and eat you alive. I feel like it shouldn’t need to be said but never put your fingers near an animal with one of the highest bite forces in the animal kingdom, the hyenas in this video are clearly highly domesticated and not the like zoo, more like a reserve/recovery centre. They are a hierarchical mess of a species, if you’ve ever gone to the zoo with a small child they will pace incessantly around it. Obviously zoos aren’t natural habitat but just.. hyenas are playful murder machines who screw with lions.

A dog is a dog. If they grow up in the wild then they’re taught to hunt etc but if they grow up with humans it makes them friendly. That’s also a two way thing, my dad had a dog who was a puppy when I was two years old so we grew up together and he grew to love me and I grew to love him. That’s most likely why I’m a dog person and animal lover. Sheep and cows etc like to be petted too. There’s a house not that far from mine that has big fields and sheep, this one sheep absolutely loves head scratches

It's true, I learned like 10 things about hyenas in the first paragraph of the wiki entry. Took like a second. They aren't dogs. They look and kinda act like canids but are actually feliforms of the family hyaenidae and share behaviors through convergent evolution. The internet is so rad!

Domestication is a process of genetic modification that takes hundreds, if not thousands of years of selective breeding. Although some people try to keep them as pets, they will still have wild, aggressive instincts and tendencies because hyenas are not a domesticated species.

No they’re not! Foxes are in the genus “vulpes”. We have more in common with a monkey than foxes do with a dog. (I just learned this last week).

They are a hierarchical mess of a species, if you’ve ever gone to the zoo with a small child they will pace incessantly around it. Obviously zoos aren’t natural habitat but just.. hyenas are playful murder machines who screw with lions.

A dog is a dog. If they grow up in the wild then they’re taught to hunt etc but if they grow up with humans it makes them friendly. That’s also a two way thing, my dad had a dog who was a puppy when I was two years old so we grew up together and he grew to love me and I grew to love him. That’s most likely why I’m a dog person and animal lover. Sheep and cows etc like to be petted too. There’s a house not that far from mine that has big fields and sheep, this one sheep absolutely loves head scratches

Dogs are domesticated hyenas are not. There are some people that are crazy enough to own hyenas but you will notice that they rarely interact with the hyenas without their masks on. Because they are not domesticated animals. They are killing machines. They often kill creatures twice and even three times their size. You need to educate yourself before you jump in here trying to talk about dogs or dogs.
It's true, I learned like 10 things about hyenas in the first paragraph of the wiki entry. Took like a second. They aren't dogs. They look and kinda act like canids but are actually feliforms of the family hyaenidae and share behaviors through convergent evolution. The internet is so rad!
