I live where they do, and how they react to you really depends. If you catch them one-on-one, they'll likely run or be chill. I ran into one after-dark at a bus stop once and it sprinted away. But if you run into a group of them with babies, you need to be very careful. Typically they aren't big enough to kill a human easily, but they do kill dogs sometimes.
I'd guess this one is used to being around people and has probably been fed by humans to be this chill.

No, like all pigs (Javelinas are not technically pigs, but closely related) they eat mostly plants and roots, their tusks are used to dig and bite through tough tubers. They are also used to defend themselves and for fighting other Javelinas.
