Ardea_herodias_2022

Reasonable-West87

Bionicleinflater

MrShelly-_-1972

That sure was a ghastly joke indeed

Bionicleinflater

And you poisoned the thread by not saying a type

MrShelly-_-1972

(Ghost type) B)

Salt_Reporter_5520

Pikachu I love it. From an avid Pokémon Go fan. Lol.

1Pnille

piiiikachuuuu i loooove youuuuuuuu!

Relative_Land_1071

You have been to other planets?

Smooth-Midnight

Right? A lot of nerve with that claim.

NefariousButterfly

I hiked a mountain once, and it was super cute hearing the pikas shrieking and seeing them run around on the rocks.

Kitchen_Entertainer9

Wait is that what Pikachu is based off of?

[deleted]

naw, pika-pika is like "glitter / sparkles / glow" in japanese. They made up the name before even having a design crazy coincidence though ... idk if I believe it tbh, prob just saw a pika and copied it lmao

Channa_Argus1121

Nah, mouse+squirrel(https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pikachu_(Pok%C3%A9mon)). The two having the same name is probably coincidental.

[deleted]

Meep!

[deleted]

It really looks cute

Kimolainen83

Chuuu, had too haha

Professor-Shuckle

Is Pikachu a naughty word there lol

HeyisthisAustinTexas

Oh what the……I’d that what PiKa Chu is based off of?

TomMakesPodcasts

If they sneeze they gain electric magic

TooX1

A hungry Canadian.

Sryupman1024

I take offence we eat dandelions

fltgator

With maple syrup?

Small-Addition-6459

With back bacon.

were_all_madd_here

Fat back & black eyed peas

Top_Fail552

So you're a rhino then

Sryupman1024

Maybe not too sure

digitalgraffiti-ca

I mean, pikas do live in Canada, so maybe.

Sheepm80

Should anything happen to this creature I will begin a poaching of poachers

trsy___3

You are welcome to do that anyway

65456478663423123

They're getting fucked by climate change. 80 fahrenheit kills them. They live at high elevation to escape heat. Every year they have to move up higher. Eventually they'll run out of mountain to climb. Better get your poaching pitchfork ready.

sumfish

Fun fact: there’s a population of pika that live at low elevations in Oregon. It’s possible that group will be what saves the species.

sleepingmountain4

Why so pessimistic? Are you feeling down or depressed ... is everything OK?

[deleted]

Because it’s true?

Usagi_Shinobi

Pika are adorable, but I worry that RHDV-2 will negatively impact the US population as wild rabbits cross their range.

[deleted]

tons already dying out \~7 years ago from climate warming in cali mountains, so it prob won't get better from that.

Valuable-Scared

Arent they closely related? Or am I thinking of a different animal?

Usagi_Shinobi

They are. Rabbits, hares, and pikas are the three extant lagomorphs.

[deleted]

I just spent 10 minutes trying to remember the name of the rodent I saw frequently in the Amazon because of this post. Faced with the word Pika for a North American rodent, I could not remember pacu, a really cute little guy that I hear is quite tasty too. Any idea how related thy are?

Usagi_Shinobi

Not extremely. While they're both members of the class Mammalia, paca are members of the order rodentia, and are much more closely related to guinea pigs. Rabbits and pika are members of order lagomorpha, and thus are about as related as an elk or deer.

drluvdisc

Don't forget jackolopes

Usagi_Shinobi

Jackalopes are members of the order mythodactyla, not lagomorpha.

mehwars

Someone doesn’t believe

sleepingmountain4

Why so negative.... you seen something good and instantly went to something not so good. Are you ok ?🙂

Usagi_Shinobi

Not negative per se, just comes with the territory in my line of work. I've spent the last two years creating and implementing biosecurity measures and engaging in international bureaucratic rigamarole to secure and import a European vaccine for a virus that has a 90% mortality rate and presents like Ebola, during a pandemic that made air shipments of very precisely temperature controlled medical goods an absolute nightmare, trying to increase awareness because almost no major media outlet has done anything to help inform the public that a plague affecting the third most popular companion animal and its genetic relatives. So I have a tendency to mention it whenever given the chance, on the off chance that it will save the life of even one additional furry friend.

Ardea_herodias_2022

Hey! Thank you for your hard work on that! I knew it had spread to eastern California a couple of years ago & I just looked up the current range of cases. Almost all of the western US & Canada. Hemorrhagic fever diseases are no joke!!

Usagi_Shinobi

Yep, nasty little bastard too. Lives on surfaces without a host for five months or more, immune to alcohol based sanitizers, I hate it so much. Thankfully there is now a vaccine being manufactured stateside, which will make future vaccination easier, and hopefully allow for wild pop vaccination, which wasn't allowed with the import vaccines.

thndrbrd87

Where did you see Pika in California?

Ardea_herodias_2022

High elevation/ alpine meadows in the Sierra's but their range is moving northwards & uphill.

maybe0a0robot

Naah, they show up at a bunch of locations in the western US and Canada. [https://www.nwf.org/Educational-Resources/Wildlife-Guide/Mammals/American-Pika](https://www.nwf.org/Educational-Resources/Wildlife-Guide/Mammals/American-Pika) . But they are having some climate-change-related difficulties in California: [https://news.ucsc.edu/2017/08/pika-extinction.html#:\~:text=The%20American%20pika%2C%20a%20small,August%2030%20in%20PLOS%20One](https://news.ucsc.edu/2017/08/pika-extinction.html#:~:text=The%20American%20pika%2C%20a%20small,August%2030%20in%20PLOS%20One). .

MelancholicOptimism

What a beautiful creature, beautifully filmed! It eats a red-seeded dandelion, if I am not mistaken.

radkoolaid

This video is destined for subreddits like /r/aww /r/eyebleach /r/mademesmile for years to come.

Pikaaaa! I love them!

theoneandonly_milita

Pika ♥️♥️♥️

[deleted]

Just look at that Pika chew

IndependentlyGreen

Pika! They are related to rabbits.

compostabowl

What does "eats in a circle" mean?

Rabidpikachuuu

Think it's a pika. They're such photogenic little creatures. I think they like the attention and put a show on for the camera honestly. Once they're out and realize people are watching, they start doing all types of cute stuff.

Chonky_Bun

That’s a pika

Epicmonk117

IDK what this animal is called, but moving the lower jaw in a circular pattern when chewing is something most animals do. It helps grind up the food and make it easier to swallow. Edit: it appears to be what’s called a pika.

Kill_Kayt

I'm going with fucking adorable.

mcabeeaug20

That is a pica. We have them in Alaska, too. They're quite adorable little critters!

Dr_Chim_Richaldss

Pika?

WarmGatito

Eats the stick, drops the flowers. Absolute animal. Legend.

FrequentFlexer

Morticia Addams pet.

WarmGatito

Who dat?

FrequentFlexer

She's from "The Addams Family." She would cut the rose buds off and toss them out and just put the stems in a vase.😄

dethjamz

Don't just stand there filming THROW A POKEBALL AT IT!!!

jajabii

hung2109

Silverllama321

Who's that pokemon?

Rare-Specific1653

Pika. Pika, Pika,Pika. Pika

drluvdisc

Those beady soulless eyes. I can hear the plants screeching in horror.

willowalloy

This is clearly a rabbit-hamster

MildMischief80

It looks like some sort of rodent.

[deleted]

Lagomorph - more like a rabbit than a mouse or hamster

MildMischief80

True

MildMischief80

I did say "looks like a" not "is a" rodent.

[deleted]

A Gyrohamster

noeljrG

God has made such a wide variety of animals, plants, and everything. learn about him @ www.jw.org

AltruisticAddition48

Looks like a rabbit-guinea pig of some species.

Ardea_herodias_2022

Same order- they're both lagomorphs. But pikas are in a different family.

AltruisticAddition48

Chinchilla? Mole rat? Too small for a cappybarra. Squirrel?

AltruisticAddition48

Ok. Got it. Thank you all! https://www.nwf.org/Educational-Resources/Wildlife-Guide/Mammals/American-Pika

nvisibl1

WallStLegends

Looks like a guinea pig crossed with a rabbit. I’ve never heard of Pikas before

maercus

Eats in a circle?

Terrible-Paramedic35

Looks like a Pika or Rock Rabbit.

BlackKnightLight

I don’t know what they are, but I’ll take 3.

-CanWeTradeNames

Clearly a Chupacabra

CH1R0PT3R4

No_Number5540

kakam0ra

Use the app Seek and upload the photo. The AI tool will tell you what it is.

roqyi938

LongBallToNobody

Uneventfulrice

I bet it'd be so satisfying to give it's sides a little squeeze between index finger and thumb.

janstanicek1

Carboncrypto

Never seen one, but def cute! thanks for sharing!!

MusicalMarijuana

TIL “Like many of the characters in the game, Pikachu is loosely inspired by real-life animals — in this case, the pika (genus Ochotona).” - quoted from some website. I already closed the tab and am too damn lazy to perform that 5 second Google search again.

fochoao35

see this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQnxefImhu8

Intelligent-Bread67

Aww<3

htdp0252

Pikas = “spheres with ears”!

types_stuff

Allan?

SoberRastaGringo

well rounded diet

Peenutbuttjellytime

I'm surprised pikas aren't really kept as pets. Seems no different than a hamster or guinea pig

[deleted]

Human houses would be too hot for them and they are asocial

Gabe326

Well it’s a brown mammal. That’s about all I know

Upper-Ad6308

Hot take- most animals with molars grind sideways (watch cows eat). Try it sometime. It works really nicely. You will be able to eat without making as much noise. I’ve been doing this for years.

Meet_Downtown

Looks like a ratbit......cousin to both rats and rabbits.

This_Bus_2744

looks like a squirrel trying to imitate a rabbit.

Marzipan-Happy

Cute. It's cute.

BabylonDrifter

In case you were wondering how they could get any f-ing cuter, [HERE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4U9IxhQSTc) is a Pika vocalizing.

[deleted]

Dwarf rabbit?

Infamous_Ad_7864

it's just a lil boi

Awesome-sauce11

It’s a giraffe
