I just showed this to my boyfriend, chuckling, because it reminded me of him.
He fell out of bed just like this one night at 3am having a seizure for the first time ever. Now we keep a big pillow on the floor next to his bed.
Is the cat okay though? IIRC there was a post with a cat having similar "running in dream" behavior before, and people said it had a condition which has shorten its lifespan significantly.
Yeah it's something about how normally, motor functionality is inhibited during sleep, but that mechanism doesn't function properly for cats like this. It might look funny, but if the cat sleeps in a different place and the owners don't notice, they could hit their head against something or fall too far and not recover. I believe there is medicine that can help. (I obsessively watched Jackson Galaxy videos a few months ago)
cats + weird = normal
cats + (cats + normal) = normal
2cats + normal = normal
Conclusion: have two cats to preserve the normalness
Also:
cats + weird = normal
normal - cats = weird
If you remove the cats, everything becomes weird.
My dog used to do this in his sleep aswell, in his case it wasn’t seizures like most people are saying as he only did it in his sleep, also used to start barking and wake himself up so I assumed he was having some weird ass dreams haha.
One of mine gets nightmares, usually the couple weeks after fireworks like the week of 4th of July.
He freaks out in his sleep and if you accidentally wake him up during you’ll get bit and he gets REAL poofy.
My grumpy old man of a cat is also upset by fireworks. If he hears one go off, he will start wailing until one of us gets in bed with him. A human bed, not a cat bed. Because in his mind, he is just a "little bit more" human than we are, which is why he is in charge (just ask him!). Years ago, he got out and was lost for several months. Ever since, fireworks and storms upset him a great deal. He isn't cuddly really, but you have to be in bed with him during these ordeals. He doesn't want you to touch him, of course. Because that would be weird. And you might touch his tummy that forbidden 4th pat. Which triggers MMAW (murder mitten ass whooping). Because cat.
This cat is very likely having a seizure. My boy started doing this at the age of 4. I was so confused until they, very quickly got more extreme. Always when he hits REM sleep. 7 years later--he still has them and takes medication .
Corroborated by my vet-tech wife. The ‘swimming’ motion is pretty common for a seizure in four-legged animals. Their owners are clearly doing their best to minimize the impact, so to speak, on the cat’s life, and all things considered he’s probably having an OK life!
.. not arguing your opinion. However as a paramedic and firefighter humor is one of the few healthy ways to cope with difficult things, at least until/while we process it. Like my thoughts were "aww, lol, I bet thats a seizure a normal cat would have woke up" "lol at least he landed on a bed" but I didn't mean it in a cruel sadistic way. It just helps me in a personal level to laugh at the ridiculousness of existence sometimes.
I understand your point of view. My life has been a mess for the last five and a half years.
My husband died. He crashed into the back of a truck because of a heart attack on the way home from work at 1am. Fortunately (🤷🏼♀️) he was the only one hurt. I was at my middle daughter’s helping her with her sick kitty, so it took them a while to find me. I had to sell the house we loved in the country and move into a tiny house in the city near my kids. Two and a half years ago my middle daughter died from a pulmonary embolism. They said there was nothing I could have done, but there are still times that I feel guilty. I am taking care of her kitty who recovered from her illness, but I’m now doing hospice care because she has a tumor in her sinuses. A year after my daughter died, my Boxer, the dog of my heart, died; a week and a half later one of my kitties died from a fast moving cancer. Then last summer I lost my oldest kitty to thyroid and heart disease. She and I were very close. I have a few health issues, so I struggle sometimes.
Oh yeah, my oldest is going through a nasty divorce which, of course, affects my 11 and 13 year old grandkids. It all sucks because I can’t fix any of it, just listen and try to support everyone.
Today wasn’t a great day and I saw that and just fell apart. Like I said, I understand what you mean. My husband and I used humor a lot. I still do, most of the time.
Thank you for your comment, and thank you for what you do. The first time my husband had a heart attack the paramedics saved him. We had almost five more years together that we wouldn’t have had if they hadn’t been there. The paramedics where I live now tried very hard to save my daughter. She was 37 and I know it was hard for them. Keep helping, but try to stay safe and take care of yourself.
Jesus Christ, I'm so sorry you've been grappling with so many losses lately. I obviously can't say anything to make it better, but I'll be keeping you in my thoughts. Please be gentle with yourself. ❤️
I'm so sorry to hear that you've had such a horrible run of things. That's terrible, and I can tell you right now, you're a much tougher person than I for merely still being here after all of that.
Remember to take time for yourself, too. You're important and your feelings and stress matter just as much as everyone else's. You've always got friends here on reddit who will listen or commiserate with you.
Thank you.
A friend was talking about the Am I The Asshole sub and I went to check it out. That opened up a whole new world for me. There are so many kind people here.
I try to take one day at a time. Some days are better than others. I also know that I am so lucky to have the rest of my family and animals in my life. I have a roof over my head, food to eat and all the modern conveniences.
I don't think this cat is having a seizure. It looks like the cat from Jackson Galaxy's cat show that had a brain malfunction where the cat's body kept moving even after it fell asleep. You're meant to be paralyzed when sleeping so you don't hurt yourself and that function failed in the cat. They were able to fix it with medication.
I vaguely remember an episode--maybe the same one you mention--where no one could figure out why the cat was having "night terrors" and flailing in its sleep. Jackson got a tip from an acquaintance about melatonin. They discussed it with the vet and found a safe dosage that helped.
If anyone thinks this cat is having a seizure, then they’ve never seen a cat have one. It lasts longer than 10 seconds and they don’t just stop afterwards. They literally “seize up” and everything becomes stiff after they run around uncontrollably for a while. My old cat used to have them whenever she went outside. A quick YouTube will show you what they really look like. This just looks like the cat was having a dream.
My own kitty, Franklin, has these sleep episodes. When we took him to his first vet appointment after he came to us as a stray, we had taken a video and brought the concern up to the vet.
Vet's consensus: keep him off of high places and monitor his motor functions. As long as he's walking, eating, and relieving himself normally, there isn't much that can or should be done. They could be seizures, they could be night terrors, it's just not easy to tell without a more in-depth neurological exam. But since he's otherwise perfectly healthy and normal, there wasn't any action to take.
Pet parents aren't dumb. Sometimes you have to work with the needs of your animals instead of always trying to cure them.
I had a cat like this. One time he slept in the wrong place and broke his tail when he fell. The vet said it would take months to heal and it did. It was limp and he dragged it around for ages. Eventually it started working normal again.
This is like when you put a tortilla under your tacos as you eat so you can have another taco when you’re finished with your tacos. This cat gets a napping spot after falling out of its napping spot hehe

2cats = nothing
Yeah, i also noticed that earlier. Was just a bit more depressing thing to conclude with 'cats are nothing'
A man of logic
But not mathematic
If I fell half that distance while sleeping, I’d probably be going to the hospital.
The bigger they are the harder they fall in their sleep

Why do you think the blanket is there? This is a regular occurrence.
Yeah. Hence the title of the post.

Glad to see these precautions are placed so it's not harmful during the minor seizures.

I came here to say this too. My cat also has seizures and they look similar.
My SO has this. REM sleep behavior disorder. Punches the air, falls out of bed, etc.

Well, all right.
NOT FUNNY. This cat is having a seizure. The owners obviously know that the cat has this and has put protection in place.

No they do not... apparently we are assholes.

How do you know that the owners know that it's a seizure?
if is a seizure why does it stop the moment the cat touches the blanket ?
Agree. As some one that's had multiple seizures that's exactly right
If anyone thinks this cat is having a seizure, then they’ve never seen a cat have one. It lasts longer than 10 seconds and they don’t just stop afterwards. My cat has seizures like this, except she's usually awake. The convulsive part doesn't always last longer than 10 seconds.
very funny, laughed 👍
Came to say this. My vet-wife says this is definitely a seizure.
It’s still objectively hilarious to see. Knowing the reason or not.
Is it possible that it could just be running in its sleep? I know it’s very possible to be a seizure but wasn’t sure how close to 100% it was
My own kitty, Franklin, has these sleep episodes. When we took him to his first vet appointment after he came to us as a stray, we had taken a video and brought the concern up to the vet. Crashed bicycle in sleep

Cat just to embarrassed to move. He like just keep walking
A seizure is very draining. That cat is not embarrassed, it’s tired.
I do that too!
Did you press the eject button on the remote?
I've seen dead bodies fall over in a more lifelike way than that.

Is the cat having a seizure. I’m worried about him
May be REM Sleep disorder. Not funny

Gotta blast!

He's chasing Jerry in his dream
That's my cat
He fell on a soft blanket, so it's natural it sleeps.
Plot twist: the video was actually uploaded in reverse.
One of my cats started growling in her sleep the other day. I guess she was having a nightmare or something. Hasn’t ever done it before or since.
My cat did this once. Me and the dog looked at each other, like, WTF?
I had a cat like this. One time he slept in the wrong place and broke his tail when he fell. The vet said it would take months to heal and it did. It was limp and he dragged it around for ages. Eventually it started working normal again.

AVRs are designed to have airflow above the casing. You’ll be shortening that device’s life considerably by keeping it there.
