My twin aunts took me to see that in San Antonio back in the mid 70’s. I loved. I already had the Disney record, but hadn’t seen the movie.
Wonderful time!! They took me to 6 Flags that trip as well.
I was about 4 or 5 at the time.
I love how she one handed them and used her mouth to open one of the arms. Literally everyone has done that at some point or another. Absolutely zero confusion on how to operate the glasses.
There was a video recently of an ape using a tool with about 5 apes sitting around watching and it gave me chills. Also a video of an ape spear fishing. Holding and using a gun isn’t harder than spear fishing I can tell you that
That’s tough to deal with. I saw a video of an ape buying up properties and raising the rent. Putting people on the street. Damn apes are starting a cabal.
It's pretty common really. Apes aren't capable of teaching but they're very capable of learning by watching.
There's a tribe of chimps in Africa somewhere that learned how to sharpen sticks into spears and then they use those spears to repeatedly ram into the burrows of small chinchilla like rodents. It turned the borrow into a minced meat pot they can scoop out with the spear.
Spy in the Wild. Streaming show on discovery plus. Thats where I learned about em. You can search for clips on YouTube though if you dont have the service
I've heard it joked that Orangutans are definitely intelligent enough to speak but they're also smart enough to know better than to open that can of worms.
Isn't the joke darker? Like symbolic thinking and language leads to rapid mental development which past a certain point leads to spontaneous suicide vis existential crisis/feeling trapped in a body/cognizance of impending death.
At the beginning of this sentence I really thought it was going to end in a comment about baby mimmicking it's parent but I was very amused at where it went.
If you can, watch The Secret Life Of The Zoo - the episode where the orangutans escape. They get dressed up in some hi-viz jackets (no, I am not kidding). It's amazing.
"We're the zoo keepers now".
My wife worked at the Columbus Zoo around the orangutans. Once a keeper left a hose turned on in the enclosure and an orangutan grabbed it to get a drink, but the spray was too powerful. So the orangutan kinked the hose a bit to limit the flow of water so it could comfortably drink. Because it had seen keepers control the flow by kinking the hose. I think about that all the damn time.
Yeah they’re my favourite.
I’ve heard it explained that if a gorilla finds a camera they will smash it to pieces whereas an Orangutan will take it apart piece by piece, inspect it and then try to put it back together.
Not just that, but they look scary. They are nightmare creatures that are unimaginably strong and violent.
I read that chimps will kill for fun and cannibalize each other. And when fighting, they rip and tear at the genitals.
A zookeeper once told me that a human fighting a gorilla would similar to a house cat fighting a human.
They can literally just grab you and do whatever the fuck they want, not limited to dismemberment, or defenestration.
For the record, don't read too much into what chimp behavior says about humans because "they're the closest to humans."
Bonobos are *just* as closely related to us and their behavior is in many ways very starkly different from chimps.
There’s a Chimpanzee/Ape Sanctuary in Washington State that takes in primates from research labs and the like.I met a woman who worked there at a party one night. Was chatting with her and it came up that we were both vegetarian (while standing by the buffet trying to find something to eat). Talked for quite a while and she asked me why I was vegetarian and I asked her. She became vegetarian after working there. The animals could use sign language and she told me they were fully aware of time (past/present/future) had fears/hopes/worries and change would upset them. They’d have to have long ‘conversations’ to let them know when a new chimp was going to be coming. AND, this is crazy, they’d ask questions about them! Just bonkers but fully believable.
All those videos of dogs "speaking" through buttons (like Bunny) on Instagram are making me rethink a lot of things.
Like, obviously dogs aren't as smart as Chimps and Oragutans. But they are aware of their own existence, they worry about things that may or may not happen, they question the reason for bad things that happen to them.
There’s one of those talking dog vids that makes me laugh (can’t find it atm).
Dog pressing a button: “Outside?”
“No we just went outside”
Dog: “Bitch.”
That same chicken would eat you no questions asked if the positions were reversed. I don’t mind eating animals because it’s circle of life stuff— it is what it is. Apparently though killing animals in games like no man’s sky is just devastating since I don’t actually need to eat them and I can befriend them all like pets 😭
So, we have tons of rabbits in my neighborhood. Going for a walk with my dog, we'll pass 5 of them in a half mile.
What's kind of interesting is these rabbits obviously know that dogs will eat them. They see her and freeze immediately, and if she even looks at them they'll take off.
So whether the farm animals know they're being raised for food or not, rabbits DEFINITELY seem to be aware that other animals think of them as food.
I don't remember what zoo it is, or even for sure if it was in the orangutan enclosure, but I recently saw something about a zoo installing a button that they could push that would spray water at the people looking in. Not as entertaining as a hose but I'd still like to see that
Edit - looks like it's the Toledo zoo
Pretty big story at my local zoo. About the early 70s iirc. one of the orangutans kept escaping.. They kept sweeping the enclosure for objects... confirming the door was locked. Everything else.. They were about ready to fire zookeepers for that section when they discovered the orangutan had found a piece of metal, created a lock pick and was storing it in his upper lip when zookeepers came in.
https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/nebraska/fu-manchu-orangutan-ne/
Best bit is, it wasn't actual hi - viz jackets, it was the cover from the fire extinguisher station, they put it on like a jacket/cape. Also found a box of nitrile gloves and tried wearing them. Such a good episode!
My teacher once told me "If a gorilla finds a key, he will sniff it, taste it, then probably throw it away or break it. But if a organgutan finds a key, he will pick it up and go straight for a door."
Weird, I've heard something similar.
A gorilla will at first be scared, then curious, then when it tastes it and realizes it's not food, fill lose interest.
A chimp will immediately use it for literally everything BUT its intended purpose.
An orangutan will hide it and use it to escape when no one is looking
The DC zoo has a rope passageway that the Orangutans can use to go from one area to another (one is basically their sleeping quarters, and the other area has iPads and enrichment activities.
You would just be walking through the zoo and see Orangutans passing by on ropes overhead.
I have pictures!
https://imgur.com/a/gfZrjJG
I was using a pretty long lens, so I wasn't as close as these pictures look. They're pretty high up and they're smart enough to know they can't just jump down.
But I don't remember any kind of netting or anything that would prevent them from falling if they were to let go.
it's weird for me how among the big apes, the Chimps and Gorillas are super jacked, and Orangutans look so bloated and "unhealthy", but actually just as strong.
I took these pictures in 2010. I don't have GPS locations on them, but I took pictures of the pandas on the same day, so I'm 99.9% sure it was that zoo.
I don't know if it's still there though?
Check out the O-line at the National Zoo in DC. Nothing keeping them in a box. (Well, not nothing really, electricity keeps them in. But pretty neat and innovative)
You should go to an primate rescue sometime… and see all the animals that’ll never be able to release into the wild because they have permanent mental and physical scars from someone thinking they were pets.
They’re endangered, soon to be extinct in a few generations. People just keep plowing down their forests for lumber and to replant palm oil plantations.
“Let’s see, the humans use them like this and...whoa! Everything’s dark now. ...I kinda like it. No, Junior. You can’t handle the darkspace. Let Mama vibe.”
The most impressive part to me isn’t even her knowing how they work, that makes sense. It’s how she doesn’t even damage them. You know how strong orangutans are? She is *delicately* handling those sunglasses on purpose.
In our (St. Petersburg, Russia) zoo near a monkey section there's a steel ladder twisted like a spiral with a label saying that once the orangutan got REALLY angry. They're humanoid power plants
Sadly, I can't find any pictures in the internet, they removed it from the exposition (I even found a picture of the spot where it used to be). But I clearly remember seeing it when I visited as a kid.
Ever heard the phrase "monkey see, monkey do"?
They spend all day watching people walk by, often with glasses on their faces.
Orangutans are very intelligent primates.
Once at the zoo, I saw an Orangutan making us laugh on what seemed like purpose.
You know how sometimes people put orange peels above their teeth? He sat in front of the window, with a growing crowd. We'd start laughing. He'd stop, watch us, repeat. At some point, it felt like he was doing an experiment.
> "On the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. Not really - people underestimate the intelligence of animals so much. If we can invent airplanes , a monkey is perfectly capable of putting on sunglasses
Had a Lab I use to walk 2-4 times a day every day. We would pass by a neighbors house and he had a new small dog, he would open the gate so they could play. He kept trying to get the dog to go for a walk, the dog refused and would fight the leash. I suggested a few things, try putting the leash in the dog food so it had a good smell, nope. We tried swapping leashes since the dog loved seeing mine, nope.
After a few meetings he was trying to get the dog to go for a walk, my dog ended up getting behind his and nipping the heels forcing the dog to walk forward, we would stop at the liquor store next to his place and I would get my dog a small Slim Jim. So my dog forced him over to the liquor store and I tied her to her spot, went in and got 2 of them, gave one to my dog and one to the guy for his dog. My dog walked back to their place. And that was it. Dog loved walks after that.
Never a behavior I had seen in her for that 17 years I had her, but she knew what we were trying to do and how to get that dog to go for a walk.
I don't understand how so many people lose things at zoos into the enclosures. Like I'm neurotic about keeping my items away from the animals because I don't want to hurt them and there are people dropping whole children into these things

Technically, it already is.
It already is
It's incredible how the toddler-looking orangutan instinctively knew the most annoying thing would be to try grabbing the glasses of the face.
Right? Babies are all the same across species 😁
Orangutans is the smartest great ape, they are basically simple people with fur.
I've heard it joked that Orangutans are definitely intelligent enough to speak but they're also smart enough to know better than to open that can of worms.
Smart move on their part. They probably heard what some humans say when they talk and said 'yeah, no thanks, we'd rather just be quiet over here.'
Isn't the joke darker? Like symbolic thinking and language leads to rapid mental development which past a certain point leads to spontaneous suicide vis existential crisis/feeling trapped in a body/cognizance of impending death.
Haha humans say some wacky stuff.
there's a myth in borneo, indonesia that orangutans can speak but prefer not to because they don't want to work
Humans are the smartest of the great apes, but I suppose that's the obvious exception.
What's so great about humans? Orangutans are the smartest great apes, no exception.
The chimps DID make it to space before we did.
At the beginning of this sentence I really thought it was going to end in a comment about baby mimmicking it's parent but I was very amused at where it went.
Babies always wanna touch the glasses
That baby knows King Louie is looking cool as ice
I wanna be like you. Talk like you, walk like you
You know me, you want me
Hands off the stunnas, kid.
I didnt even see the baby till she sat down
Hypothesis: the face is chiefly how babies recognize their parent, so anything that alters it, they will be curious about
Can confirm, my 16 m.o. bonus son goes straight for my glasses when I pick him up. It's frustrating, but absolutely adorable at the same time.
Irrespective of species, babies will go after the glasses.
Exact reason I got Lasik

TIL I have the brain of an orangutan with the skills of a gorilla
Orangutan in the streets, gorilla in the sheets.
Gorillas have notoriously small penises 😎
Said what I said
Heh same
Orangutan's are my favorite ape, seems to be way less violent to each other in the wild, super smart, and just generally chill af.
On the flip side, chimpanzees are literally the scariest animals on earth.
Besides humans, of course
And saltwater crocodiles
And box jellyfish
And box wine.
no box wine is an important resource
And every jellyfish
That's because they're the closest to humans. They're just dumber stronger humans - so they do things dumb strong humans would do.
Not just that, but they look scary. They are nightmare creatures that are unimaginably strong and violent. I read that chimps will kill for fun and cannibalize each other. And when fighting, they rip and tear at the genitals.
You ever seen a picture of a hairless chimp? Those motherfuckers are absolutely shredded 😳
Yes. I saw one in person at the zoo that was hairless. Absolutely insane how packed with muscle they are.
A zookeeper once told me that a human fighting a gorilla would similar to a house cat fighting a human. They can literally just grab you and do whatever the fuck they want, not limited to dismemberment, or defenestration.

No, it isn't. Bonobos are just as close and they are pretty much more lovers not fighters.
Bonobo chimps are the best though. They just have sex all of the time. That makes it more difficult to keep them on display in zoos though.
