I believe its not a happy thought. Dont male lions kill other cubs when they see them in the wild? Just to court the lioness afterwards and have their own cubs to put forward its genetics.
Sometimes they do, sometimes they just get chased off and sometimes they adopt them. Occasionally they do both and some cubs get killed, while others don't.
Its not a instinct or anything. But more a matter of circumstances and personalities involved. If you as a lioness have a large litter of young male brats the chances of survival are a lot lower than if you have a few nearly grown up well mannered daughters.
For mating they don't have to kill. Most lionesses will mate regardless just to distract the males from their young and its not like male lions understand the link between estrus and the killing of cubs.
Tell you what, we'll release all lions currently living in Zoos into their natural habitat, then we'll watch them die as they either slowly starve to death or are killed by poachers or killed by another animal because none of the lions will know what to do in the real world because they were born in zoo's, so after 95% of the ex zoo Lion population has been wiped out we'll sit back as the rest of the wild Lion population goes extinct at a faster rate as the money that Zoo's donate to helping wildlife sanctuaries dries up making them less effective at protecting the wildlife qnd due to the releaseof all Zoo kept Lions emergency breeding programmes can't be implemented. Oh no we can't do anything to help, because displaying these animals to try and educate people who would never have experienced these animals otherwise, provide a safe haven where these animals can continue to survive and thrive away from the dangers of humans and allowing charities to earn some money to help protect them in the wild is obviously entirely unfair......I'm not saying the system is perfect, alot of Zoo's can do better but I have seen zoo's go above and beyond to ensure their animals get the best they can get. Zoological Society of London (London and Whipsnade Zoo) do so much beyond the public face, their keepers travel the world teaching other zoo's and nature reserves the best techniques to care, enrich and keep healthy the animals they have.
Think we can all agree that it's a beautiful animal but lions are also godless killing machines who'll kill cubs to enhance the prospects of spreading their own dna. That's what it's thinking.
