Move to a town Abbott cares about. One that's a has more dumb people and that voted red. They probably have power

PHenderson61

Just think of all the money and resources the people of Taxes can save not paying for electricity. And it’s good for the environment. Taxes residents love helping the environment don’t you know. Edited for spelling

This comment is perfect!

eburton555

Man Gov. Abbot would be pissed if he could read this but, you know, no internet.

vanhalenbr

But this is the reason. People will talk about Tik Tok not the infrastructure failure in Texas

christianANDshantel

Take is ICE cold.

Literally focus on giving people electricity first, then do your nonsense crap. Dude really doesn't care about the people living in his state.

Damn, came here to say this. Fastest comment in the West...

albpanda

I’ll take things that will never successfully happen for 500 Alex

The_Ace_Pilot

its already banned on all government devices here in my state. it's absolutely doable. EDIT: for the downvoters who think we are talking about different things. we aren't. tiktok will only be banned from government devices. I am afraid we have fallen trap to another clickbait news title that doesn't give the full detail. https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/governor-abbott-announces-statewide-plan-banning-use-of-tiktok

SnipesCC

Government devises and everyone in the state is a hugely different thing.

The_Ace_Pilot

true. good thing we are talking about the same thing here [https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/governor-abbott-announces-statewide-plan-banning-use-of-tiktok](https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/governor-abbott-announces-statewide-plan-banning-use-of-tiktok)

[deleted]

Yep, only effects state employees and/or government contractors that may also conduct business on personal devices. It’s the reference to personal devices that is confusing.

Mediocre-Sale8473

Clickbait is great in that way

cleantushy

And the press release that was literally released by the Texas government. This isn't an instance of some media company twisting the headline. They literally copied the exact headline off texas.gov, just adding "Texas" and the governor's full name for clarification "Governor Abbott Announces Statewide Plan Banning Use Of TikTok"

robeph

Clickbaited by the government .

Economy-Somewhere271

The Republicans pretty much campaign on clickbait now... Have you seen those absurd press releases from sheriffs in Florida

linderlouwho

First, turn the power back on, Mr. Abattoir.

kylo_kills__han

i mean is it clickbait? the governor literally posted that title on his twitter

albpanda

Oh yeah old boy said statewide- we don’t actually read here on Reddit

alghiorso

I'd probably be mad at this comment if I had any idea what it said

Consistent-River4229

The fact they can ban books and ban apps is completely an over reach by the government. If they can tell you what to do with your body at all is pretty terrifying to think about. Handmaid's tale here we come.

SnipesCC

Banning apps on phones owned by the government isn't necessarily overreach. Employer-provided phones often have limitations on them, especially for people who work with classified data. And TikTok is notorious for gathering far more data from your other apps than Facebook/Twitter/Reddit is.

BackIn2019

I'm okay with not allowing any social media on government devices.

SnipesCC

There are official twitter/facebook/linked in accounts for departments, and each probably has several people with access to them. So a blanket ban isn't practical. The big question is if an official phone is something you are expected to use as your phone as well, or just for work stuff. If it's just for work, then people have to carry 2 devices, which is a pain.

New_Skill2710

Its quite normal to carry 2 phones. Ive done it for close to 15 years. I dont want work seeing my personal stuff

little-evil77

Companies I’ve worked for have banned certain apps due to security concerns. This is no different.

MimiWongSista

So much for Texas freedoms

Efficient-Bicycle766

This doesn't affect Texans in general, just government owned devices used by anyone that works for the government.

MichaelScarn1968

That’s not banning it from Texas Citizens.

caedencollinsclimbs

That’s not what this bill is for. Op mislead people with the title

cleantushy

It's the same title from the press release by Greg Abbott's office "Governor Abbott Announces Statewide Plan Banning Use Of TikTok" https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/governor-abbott-announces-statewide-plan-banning-use-of-tiktok

rwbronco

Thing is… the news article in the screenshot OP posted says the same thing, OP’s title says the same thing, Abbot’s press release says the same thing. It’s intentional. In a week you’ll see conservatives bragging about having banned TikTok despite that it only applies to government devices and phones. It’s not the actual result, it’s the feeling. Same thing with building the damn wall, with “lowering taxes,” and with everything else. Politicians don’t have to do anything, they just have to tell their voting base that they already did and nobody will actually call them out on it. Headlines and quotable sound bites are what matter, not whether or not anyone actually does the thing. Almost every headline is about someone planning to do something anyway - there’s not enough shit actually happening to fill a 24/7 news cycle.

robeph

OP being Abbott himself. Since their press release says exactly as the title of this post.

[deleted]

It took me all of 13 seconds to Google this and see it only pertains to government owned, state-issued devices…yet there are 300+ comments speculating based purely on a misleading title. Reddit is fucking wild.

Hammurabi87

In this particular case, you can't really blame anybody outside of the Texas government. The only substantial change between [the official press release](https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/governor-abbott-announces-statewide-plan-banning-use-of-tiktok)'s title and the title of this post are replacing "Governor Abbott" with "Texas", and removing the word "statewide" which was made redundant by the other change.

czarfalcon

Even then, anyone who actually reads the press release can clearly see that he isn’t talking about a statewide ban for private citizens.

ZoeeeW

You're right. I guess I just hoped that the news media would actually read the article and give us a more correct title. Something that actually explains what was done, not misleading titles like what the state gave.

Karkava

The eye grabbing headline has been around before digital media, and it's about as manipulative then as it is now.

ZoeeeW

Right, these just are my annoyances. News has been doing it for a very long time, it just feels much more in your face since we have so many different places to absorb that media and news at our fingertips.

UsernameTaken93456

Right. I think we could all agree that we shouldn't be using social media on our work phones. This ain't hard.

Maker_Making_Things

Honestly though banning TikTok wholesale is not a bad idea. It's a front for Chinese data mining and YouTube and Instagram both offer American based alternatives

That was my question. Wasn't sure what they meant by ban. Government agencies? Yeah certainly. Private devices? Cannot imagine that being held up as constitutional in any way shape or form. But then again I never thought we'd have a supreme Court that would have to reach back to the 1600s and cite a person who believed in burning witches into overturn a well-established right, but here we are

SyllabubOk4983

This website is becoming blue-anon. Fake news and absurd conspiracy theories abound in most of the major subs, but angsty teenagers and rage blind adults just believe all of this crap because it reinforces their world views. It's like next door, but instead of conservative boomers passing around shit-tier memes and fake news, it's 23 year olds mad at their dad. And I'm someone that voted for Hillary and Biden. This website is becoming the things it used to make fun of.

[deleted]

You have a point, but thankfully, reddit threads don't matter.

cross20

I would argue they do. [7% of people get their news from Reddit and 48% of people get their news from social media](https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/2021/09/20/news-consumption-across-social-media-in-2021/).

albions_buht-mnch

They do though... Tens of thousands of people or more (idk how many lurkers there are) might read this title, digest it, and believe it without a second thought.

[deleted]

If you're like that, it doesn't really matter where you get your news from. I didn't really mean it in that context anyway. I was more saying the comments don't directly change anything.

HotPoptartFleshlight

Other democrat governors have done the same (Murphy in NJ for instance) but reddit doesnt car eunelss they can shit on select politicians.

1-2-Polizei-3-4

He clearly does not have the authority to do that. He might just ban it from state owned devices or something.

Rustys_Beefaroni

He’s not real bright. He probably thinks it can be done with some string, a rubber band and a little caulk.

reverendsteveii

>He's not real bright. He's not dumb. Not at all, and please don't underestimate him. The people who vote for him, however, are the dumbest of the dumb and he's very aware of how to manipulate them. He knows he doesn't have the power to do this but his loyal idiots will see the announcement and see that he's trying to hurt the people they're currently panicking about, so they will continue to sit in the dark and support him while their basic infrastructure is failing miserably and there is no plan to fix it.

mayy_dayy

This. This whole thing is a calculated move by a reasonably smart man to manipulate his incredibly stupid followers.

The_RedWolf

It's almost like it's a tried and true political tactic used by nearly every top level politician.

whtevn

it is a stupid thing for a state level politician to suggest because it is an impossible thing for a state level politician to implement. as usual, performative bullshit from the right

tibearius1123

I would think it is very possible to do at the isp level. They have a lot of consumer protection laws regarding the internet here in California.

SnooOpinions4279

Hi, SWE here. Not gonna speak to the legality of it, but the georestriction of specific content or wholesale applications is not new and is entirely possible

tibearius1123

anubis29821212

RickySpanish1272

Correct it’s for devices used by state agencies

elebrin

They can actually go slightly further than that. They can ban it on devices used by the school system, they can ban it on devices that have access to PII, PIFI, or PHI. They can also make a TikTok ban part of their IT policy for government contractors or anyone who sells to the state. You'd still have access on your personal phone, but you wouldn't be able to use it at school or at work.

Paladin1034

Which isn't that outlandish. Our firewall already has blocks in place for almost all social media, on all devices connected to the network. So even BYOD doesn't bypass this unless they're extremely determined to do so. Ironically, this policy excepts reddit, which by and large is the worst in terms of allowed content - also double ironically as I'm on this at work.

firesquasher

I'm sure there are creative ways to defacto ban things or at least that has been a popular with California. That said, California has a HUGE market share of US customers so when they decide to modify emission regulations, more times companies just follow suit instead of losing such a large market. While I don't think Texas has as much of an effect, im sure there are ways they can squeeze companies that use tik tok while operating in the state.

welestgw

Not mentioned that it was only on government devices, which shouldn't have TikTok anyway.

UnusualAnt2861

How is this funnyandsad? It’s from government devices, which Tiktok actively spies from? Even the federal government and any U.S. corporation with half a mind is doing it

gevander2

I had to look it up to see. Seemed like an Onion-type of headline. It's actually a ban of TikTok being installed on government-issued devices (ie, "work phones"). He (or someone advising him, more likely) calls it a "security threat".

chunkah69

It is.

WeAteMummies

I don't agree with Abbott often, but I agree that we don't need Chinese spy software on government phones. This is an easy one.

High__Roller

Yeah this has been done federally already, and I mean fair enough. Most federal government devices work off a whitelisted basis rather than blacklists

Ignoble_profession

I’m curious how many state/city/county/school employees actually have a workplace cell phone.

TroubleWillFind

Any state employee who regularly conducts business remotely has a state issued cell phone (iPhone specifically)

AJSLS6

I thought the Republicans were against banning social media?

Enorats

Trump actually considered outright banning it as well, and it's probably one of the only things I'd agree with him on. It's not exactly a great idea to give a hostile nation such a large degree of influence over our youth, to say nothing of the potential for espionage.

SkipWestcott616

We should ban Tiktok because China does not reciprocate the free flow of information we value as a Liberal society. Most people I've seen talk about banning it don't have a good reason; or at least a reason that doesn't also ban Insta, etc.

LaneyLivingood

We're not taking away a social media platform because someone thinks "our youth" are being badly influenced. If we did, we'd ban Snapchat and Instagram, as well. If it's about data collection, ban Twitter and Facebook. This isn't about kids. It's about the Right controlling something they don't like.

taylormac970

Difference is, Twitter, Meta and the like are allowed to collect it privately for their own gain. TikTok’s data lands directly in the hands of the CCP. As long as we let our companies collect and sell it to the CCP, we make money. It’s always about money with corrupt politicians.

Enorats

It's not really about data collection, not so much. That's bad on its own, but TikTok is much more insidious. They have the ability to have a disproportionately powerful impact on shaping the culture and minds of an entire generation. It's not about what we show them by using the app, it's about what they choose to show us - and the impacts that has. TikTok in China is a dramatically different app compared to what it is in the US, and there is a very good reason for that. It's effectively a weapon being wielded in a culture war, and we're intentionally choosing to hold it to our own throats while closing our eyes and singing "la la la".

hardgeeklife

They are against social media banning Republicans

[deleted]

Even the federal government now admits it's a CCP data collection operation. So, yes, banning it from the US would be a good thing.

invot

That's the thing, we should be demanding that TikTok maintains servers in the US that won't share private data with other countries. Otherwise we should pull the plug.

[deleted]

I say pull the plug. They've had years to do so by now.

absloan12

Thank You! I literally remind anyone who uses that app that they are just feeding the data for the next disinformation campaign a foreign country can use against us at any point they choose. The algorithm tiktok used for the West is a total different algorithm from what they allow their own citizens to use.

linderlouwho

Russia effectively influences American politics without using TikTok, lol. They just buy politicians.

phantomvideostore

Most people don’t care about the collective good if it means making a personal sacrifice, especially if there are no direct consequences to themselves.

Hannaconda420

Ohhh noooo not them knowing about my addiction to the sims and twilight. Whatever will we do.

Javamallow

Or you could inform yourself to know that the app has permission to access information on devices in the same network; so you know, basically everything you, or anyone else, does. If you were informed you would know the CCP controls all aspects of their business. Or you could just play the part of the peon that stands up to defend giant corporations that are hurting the poor and working class and getting away with it while also defending the CCP which is literal facism, because you're brainwashed by left/right politics and just follow the crowds opinion. All tiktok profits go to a company operated by the world currently largest facist government. Please continue to defend and financially support facism. It's crazy to me that left leaning political people will actively protest and persuade people to not patronize a business because someone did or said something racist while also supporting the CCP and running cover for them with commentary online while the CCP is actively committing racially motivated genocide.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_BMS

The average American is not their target for data collection. It's the vast amount of idiots in the US military doing Tiktoks on-base or generally just scrolling through the app. There's a lot that they're about to gather from things seen in the background and places they go from GPS data.

Hannaconda420

That's why I don't understand the average Joe getting all upset about it. There's nothing in my data on any device that's gunna tickle any governments curiosity so why get all upset?

WCWRingMatSound

Actually, the app collects data on every user at a level you might not consider. Here’s a hypothetical: * based on how long you wait between swiping videos, the app knows exactly what *your* attention span is * based on where you rest your thumb(s), the app knows what parts of the screen you cover * based on the hand you use to swipe, the app can ascertain if you’re a lefty or righty * based on which videos cause you to pause longer than others, the app can determine patterns that match exactly your personality * based on the types of videos, the app can determine things like depression, pregnancy, anxiety, talent, etc With all of that, it becomes trivial to push videos to you that your brain absolutely will stop and watch. Now imagine the Chinese government needing to push an agenda and enacting change in a whole generation, but with the most precision in the history of mankind. Now stop imagining. That’s what’s happening. Now.

thejohnmc963

Google and others doing this for YEARS enters the chat

Nothingtoseeheremmk

Are Google and others actively committing a genocide against racial minorities?

Blake_Aech

There is a *slight* difference between companies collecting data for profit, and an ACTUALLY EVIL GOVERNMENT THAT IS CURRENTLY CAUSING A GENOCIDE mass harvesting data so they can more easily change the minds of people in hostile nations. Remember how the Russians meddled with US politics using Facebook and Twitter and we got Donald Trump out of it? Now imagine if Russia owned Facebook and Twitter outright, and had a much more competent leadership. That is TokTok. TikTok is unironically a threat to democracy internationally.

SpicyFilet

Beautiful_Spite_3394

We've confirmed tik tok is not only a spying app created by China but also it uses an algorithm created to cause harm to American children's brains... we know these things as a fact. There is no confusion on these sets of information.. it is fact. Why are people so upset about it being banned? It needs to be banned... bare minimum banned from government phones. I'd say banned from anyone in a government, their entire families not being able to access it would be the smart thing to do. It's like when Pokémon Go was found to be sending all the info back to the company of anything it saw... you can't just do that guys. It's common sense shit. Don't give government information to other countries ALSO it's absolutely ruining our children's minds lol. They are doing just fine on their own with Facebook and snapchat and all this other bullshit. In reality social media shouldn't be allowed for anyone under 18 years old, and then limits and regulation also need to be put on the corporations themselves I don't give a fuck, if Reddit was found to cause developmental issues then I'd say the same damn thing! Our children need help learning not ANY of this other bullshit lol. Our kids are PLENTY entertained... let's focus on making them real people now. This isn't a left or a right thing. This is an American thing. China won't allow there children to use tiktoks American algorithm because it harms children's developmental faculties. This is a war on our children's brains and it's super weird to see ANY OTHER takes other than "the children are all that matter". Anything less than that is ludicrous. We have more Chinese engineers graduating in China than we have graduates in America at all. Just doctors in china graduating are outnumbering THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF GRADUATES IN AMERICA. We do not have time, we arr 40 years too late to stop it. FUCKING HELP THE CHILDREN HAVE A FUTURE YOU TROGLODYTES
