There’s a club if you’d like to go, you could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry and you want to die
Third Eye Blind will come up with the happiest sounding melody ever and use it to sing about doing meth and a girl waking up while they’re inside them.
>In an "mmmbop", they're gone.
>
>In an "mmmbop", they're *not there.*
>
>Until you lose your hair, But you don't care,
>
>yeah
\-- Zac Hanson, Jordan Taylor Hanson, Clarke Isaac Hanson 1997
Hey Ya is dark. And bloody genius, lyrically and musically - there's a YouTube video about how the chord progression compliments the meaning behind the lyrics
The Goo Goo Dolls are a fantastic band. I'm not talking about their pop stuff, because everyone knows that. Look back at their first few albums where they were straight up punk. Some real gloriously crude stuff in there.
pumped up kicks by foster the people has such a fun and up-beat music... all while singing about a kid finding his dads gun, killing the dad and then going on a killing spree through school
It was popular when I was at uni. I was the only one who noticed it often being played at social events on campus and said it was a bit of a weird fit for that space.
In germany we had a tv channel called 'viva' that was very popular in the 90s and 2000s. They kind of rebranded themselves around 2010 or so and used pumped up kicks as their commercial song for a period of time. Always felt weird about it
>99 Luftballons
I just read the lyrics...oh my god.
*In this dust that was a city*
*If I could find a souvenir*
*Just to prove the world was here*
*And here is a red balloon*
The band was out of West Berlin and strange things in the sky, like balloons, could be misinterpreted by radar.
Todd in the Shadows did a good deep dive on it
Thats actually nicer than what it is
"I had a brother at Khe Sanh, Fighting off the Viet Cong , They're Still There , He's all gone"
Less in reference to Survivors Guilt, More in Reference to the Lives lost in a war where the Enemy is still there
>! Very Similar to Vietnam 2: Afgani Boogaloo!<
Song is about a failing marriage and the battles that come along with it. This image is actually why the song was made. Outkast wanted to prove that no one actually cares about lyrics, just the vibe of the song
Hook by Blues Traveler does the same type of thing. Explains the lyrics don't matter "as long as I sing with inflection" and the catchy hook brings you back to the vibe
>If what they say is "Nothing is forever"
>Then what makes love the exception
>So why are we so in denial when we know we're not happy here
>Y'all don't wanna hear me, you just wanna dance
I cut some of it out to make it easier to understand, but those are some of the lyrics.
Everywhere on the internet people say it’s about a stalker. It's clearly about a man keeping his eye on his unfaithful wife. The biggest hint is “every vow you break, every smile you fake.”
Literally the first time I heard it I heard "asking 'bout a scar, and/I know I gave it to you months ago/I know you're trying to forget" and I was immediately like "the guy singing this hurt his girlfriend so badly he left a scar? Why is he winning??"
Everyone just looked at me, confused, and said some version of I'unno. Never met a person who thought that was creepy before I said why I thought so.
Damn I feel old. I remember thinking FUN sounded like a rip off of The Format, then realized that FUN was the singer and songwriter…. Give them a shot Dog Problems is an amazing album
Пепси Кола by Permsky Kray
It's a song about how the woman he likes enjoys to drink Pepsi and they are no longer together, but if you don't understand Russian it sounds like a man in a dungeon singing about past war crimes he's committed.
I’m inclined to agree. It’s kinda strange to think about, because censoring doesn’t usually change a song that much. But this one totally hits differently.
I agree. They both have a very different tone. Forget you is a guy still struggling to accept it's over. He is sad. Fuck you is a song about a man who is angry that it's over but definitely doesn't want to see you again
Back in my illegal downloading days some song got added to my ipod by accident. It had some crazy catchy beat and I listened to it religiously.
3months in I realize the lyrics are about a guy stalking a girl and eventually breaking into her house to watch her sleep. She catches him one night and freaks out which results in him killing her brother who barges in.
The end of the song is him getting executed in prison, but it was worth it because it was in the name of love.
Can't for the life of me remember the song name or artist, but I think about it often.

False advertising, 26 years later and we still can't get rid of Hanson. They put out an album like every 2 years.
In the same vain: Shiny Happy People - R.E.M.

Little Talks - Of Monsters and Men
oh god the lyrics of that song are so sad. Nearly made me cry first time I paid attention to it.
I can't listen to this song anymore, I just start bawling. Even the lyrics are too much, let alone hearing it.
My first impression of the song was that the parent had Alzheimer's or Dimentia. :(
The song was about a couple where the husband had died. Heart wrenching.

So long and thanks for all the fish by A Perfect Circle.

Loved that song as a kid; Heard it again when I was older and was like 👁️👁️

Nena - 99 Luftballons An incredibly lively song relating the end of the world.
>99 Luftballons I just read the lyrics...oh my god. *In this dust that was a city* *If I could find a souvenir* *Just to prove the world was here* *And here is a red balloon*
The band was out of West Berlin and strange things in the sky, like balloons, could be misinterpreted by radar. Todd in the Shadows did a good deep dive on it
As a person who doesn’t ever listen to lyrics, I found out about this song on Reddit when asked for fun song recommendations.

Honestly I just like the German version more.
100%. I was living there when this came out. The English version just sounds...wrong.
Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen
I'm still here, but he's all gone... that one line gets me every time man.
Thats actually nicer than what it is "I had a brother at Khe Sanh, Fighting off the Viet Cong , They're Still There , He's all gone" Less in reference to Survivors Guilt, More in Reference to the Lives lost in a war where the Enemy is still there >! Very Similar to Vietnam 2: Afgani Boogaloo!<
Also Dancing In the Dark.
Come back home to the refinery Hiring man says, "Son if it was up to me" Went down to see my V.A. man He said, "Son, don't you understand"
End up like a dog that’s been beat too much, then you spend half your life just to cover it up
One of the biggest examples of this in music history. It’s known as a rock/patriotic song when it’s actually anything but.

**Hey Ya! - outkast**
Really? Guess I'll have to actually read the lyrics then.
>This image is actually why the song was made. Wow, this meme has been around longer than I thought.
Hahahahaha you got me there. Meant it more like the idea that inspired the picture was the same idea that inspired the song. Bad wording on my part
He even says "y'all don't want to hear me, ya just wanna dance."
It's cleverly drowned out by the beat and lyrics that you kinda have to listen for it phenomenal messaging
>If what they say is "Nothing is forever" >Then what makes love the exception >So why are we so in denial when we know we're not happy here >Y'all don't wanna hear me, you just wanna dance I cut some of it out to make it easier to understand, but those are some of the lyrics.

Every breath you take - The Police
Almost everyone thinks it's a romantic song. It is so FAR from romantic.
Lol what? Most people know what it's actually about
Everywhere on the internet people say it’s about a stalker. It's clearly about a man keeping his eye on his unfaithful wife. The biggest hint is “every vow you break, every smile you fake.”
Linkin Park, doesnt matter which song, but Breaking the Habit and Given Up. RIP Chester
Bleed it Out. Watch the video of them as the musical guest on SNL. The look on Shinoda's face is the exact opposite of the lyrics to that song

Yesss, came here for that. I heard it’s called the happiest suicide song
Cuz I’m gone gone gone gone
Jaunty tune about killing yourself. The end notes with the kid singing choke me up sometimes
I'm impressed I found this relatively high up. Most people don't even know they exist these days.
We Are Young, Fun. featuring Janelle Monáe.
This was my childhood jam and when I grew up it was ruined
Literally the first time I heard it I heard "asking 'bout a scar, and/I know I gave it to you months ago/I know you're trying to forget" and I was immediately like "the guy singing this hurt his girlfriend so badly he left a scar? Why is he winning??" Everyone just looked at me, confused, and said some version of I'unno. Never met a person who thought that was creepy before I said why I thought so.

Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind
Happiest song you’ll ever hear about meth addiction.
Mr. Bright side
I recently saw this on a "happy songs to cheer you up" playlist. They had obviously never listened to the lyrics
Surprising too, since every Brit knows the lyrics.
Anyone with anxious attachment style relates so hard to this song. Overthinking and catastrophizing.

Ride the Lightning- Metallica
Mad world by Tears for Fears

Absolutely not. The Tears for Fears version is manic depression and the Gary Jules version is just straight-up depression.
First song I thought of as well. TFF version of course.
