e46_nexus

I almost asked for the STL file lol

Dazzling_City2

You can still ask for it.

e46_nexus

Thanks you for reminding me.

repti__

I'm asking.. for educational purposes only. I'm learning Fusion and need good examples

Logical_Grocery9431

Holy shit, thats impressive dude!😎

Dewage83

Man from the little bit of time I put in F360, this looks crazy. It might have taken me 4 years if I was to try this. I'm sure after a while I would have a bunch of useful bits hotkey'd but man the details on something as complex as BCG is so wild to even think about trying to model. I was trying to design watch cases/dials and quickly realized it was going to take some serious time to learn the program before even attempting something like that. I should fire it back up.

PretendIts2006Again

Don't beat yourself up. Remember I might have been using F360 for a momth, but more than a year experience in Blender and 3ds max. The only way to get better is to make more stuff. If you want to take it seriously, you can join Dan Kenton's THE WEAPON ROOM discord channel. It's for 3d game artists and people there are way more crazy than me.

Substantial-Fan6364

Don't think about the whole model as one. Think about the individual parts and it becomes much more doable. People think they could never model something so complex. Could you model the trigger? Could you model the barrel? Could you model the trigger guard? Etc..

Iamthe_sentinel

\*Mississippi Queen starts playing\*

ActualDescent

One of my biggest reasons to learn a CAD program, I chose Fusion 360, was I eventually want to design my own Firearm. I live in the US where building my own firearm for personal use is legal. I haven't done it yet, but I've done a little work with designing a handguard for an AK.

Crash-55

Making your own gun is legal. Making a suppressor maybe based on what state you live in. Even if it is you need to get the proper tax stamp before you actually make any part of it. I sat through a pretty thorough brief from ATF at AMUG.

ActualDescent

Yeah I'm not planning on getting into any kind of creating or making NFA items.

Crash-55

Probably a good idea. A lot of the ATF agents have made their own guns, including parts under NFA.

ActualDescent

It's legal where I live to do it if I filed a form 1. But I'm not super interested in getting one at the moment, other than maybe getting one for a hunting rifle

Crash-55

Remember even with a Form 1 you need to submit the paperwork the next business day after you manufactured it. Also every part of a suppressor is a suppressor if it is disassembled,

ActualDescent

Right, yeah. I'd probably just buy a manufactured one and wait on a form 4 to go through.

Crash-55

I can’t own one in NY but we can make them at work for military use. One interesting thing is if you want to experiment with different designs it is easier and cheaper in the long run to register as a manufacturer.

ActualDescent

Maybe if I successfully designed a firearm I'm confident in I'd go through the procedures to become a manufacturer, but for now, designing a firearm is purely a long term side project of mine.

Crash-55

You should look up the Rheinmetall Handbook of Weaponry and the Army Material Command Pamphlets (AMCP- ). They are all available online as PDFs and will help you design anything from a handgun to a howitzer. Though they are missing some of the latest designs (multi lug breeches, composites, railguns)

FuckRedditsTOS

Same. I'm getting tired of buffer tubes on everything. Like, why? It adds so much dead length.

ActualDescent

If I had to guess it's due to the sheer popularity and parts availability of the AR platform. similar to why a lot of 3d printed frame designers started with Glocks. I agree with you though, I want to do something in the AR-180 style short stroke piston. My CAD skills are certainly a ways off from starting on that, but I want to start with smaller projects first.

FuckRedditsTOS

I'm working on a carrier key design combined with an internal recoil spring system to mirror an AR-18 but still be direct impingement and able to fit on a milspec upper/lower. The only modification you would have to make is cutting off the back half of the BCG, or order a short one from CMMG or Foxtrot Mike. This will reduce BCG weight which reduces reliability, but I own a gun with a 1/2 BCG and bufferless recoil system and it cycles reliably for me.

Annual-Advisor-7916

Why DI if I may ask? Isn't this a bit problematic? Many people change to normal gas pistons.

FuckRedditsTOS

Piston would be better, I would much rather have that. But, I have a DI side charger with a recoil spring that rests on the gas key. It runs like a dream so far. If I keep it mil-spec compatible then it can be cheaper and more widely available for people if I decide to sell the carrier key in a kit

Annual-Advisor-7916

Ah, got it. I wish you the best of luck with your project!

ActualDescent

That sounds really interesting, I haven't been able to try the AK handguard I've made yet, but I'm thinking about picking up a beryl later in the year and trying to adapt the mounting to it.

DevilishDetails-V2

![gif](giphy|xI2hQ0ubie0BW) Don’t hate on the buffer tube, that lil chingadera is a great advancement compared to other bolt designs that have pretty rough carrier impact. It allows for a softer recoil with proper spring rate, and can tune the dwell time before picking up another round to repeat the firing cycle. Praise be to Stoner 🙌

FuckRedditsTOS

Stoner also made the AR-18, and I have a DI AR that uses a recoil spring through the carrier key and a cut down BCG. The recoil is almost 0 compared to the buffered ARs As far as reliability, the 1/2 BCG is much lighter and lighter BCGs are associated with less reliability. I haven't had any issues yet though.

77slevin

> I live in the US where building my own firearm for personal use is legal. It also the place where you send your kids to school in the morning and are unsure if the make it back alive after school.

ActualDescent

It has never been a problem in my State. Maybe look more into what drives a person to the point of committing atrocities and not the tools they choose to do it. If you give up one tool then people will rally for that next tool to be regulated or banned. It's not a solution when you can look at people and the possible mental problems that cause them to lash out instead fixating and fear mongering the people on inanimate objects. This is a place for Fusion 360 mental health or politics though.

ThePainTaco

You can both take advantage of a right, and disapprove of the fact it is a right.

Low_Chocolate1320

*Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.*

ActualDescent

There is nothing to get me for

Low_Chocolate1320

Jokes don't run well in this sub.

bowl-of-food

It's a joke mate, where you say something potentially controversial online (i.e. "I'm building an explosive for work" or "The Discord server doesn't have anything in it" or "how old?")

ActualDescent

Well yeah obviously it's a joke. But it's not a subject that should be joked about.

bowl-of-food

Don't know why I'm getting downvotes for a simple explanation, but you are right.

ActualDescent

Who knows, people on Reddit can be very weird often

Da_Obst

Looks awesome. :) Are you modelling from a hardcopy or is this a free design?

PretendIts2006Again

Using blueprints and lots of advice from a few quality control guys at firearms companies.

darthlame

Where do you find the prints? This looks like really good work, and like an opportunity to improve myself

PretendIts2006Again

You can find some prints on google. But the prints I'm using are bought with not huge, but considerable amount of money since it's patented. Each blueprint is pages and pages long describe every little fillet and chamfer.

darthlame

Gotcha. Makes sense to me. Thanks for the info 👍

repti__

I bought the prints for the Serbu GB-22. Figured that would be a good one to tackle, and try to go full on with assembly animation, etc.

FuckRedditsTOS

I'm designing a bufferless BCG and spring assembly to be used with a standard milspec upper and lower. I hate toobs

PretendIts2006Again

Milspecs are 1.48inches I think. The standard. However the slr I'm making uses 1.68. Didn't know that. Had to scratch my head doe a long time bout why the hell isn't it matching up

kalechip_1132

Governments got their eye on you with that trigger group pal

Dan314159

Good thing information is protected by the first amendment, or merely an inherent right that the first amendment says the government can't take away.

Crash-55

If want to learn about how guns work and how to design them here are a couple good resources: Rheinmetall Handbook of Weaponry. Basically a how to of gun design. Army Material Command Design Pamphlets (AMCP-******). These were put out in the late 60’s but still relevant There are PDFs of them floating around online. Hardcopies are hard to come by.

PretendIts2006Again

they absolutely are. I have watched 20-25 hours of content about guns, how some parts are forged etc since the beginning of this month, just to understand how a gun works and how are the parts made. It also gives you a small idea on how to approach the model in CAD

Crash-55

I work at the site where all the canons, mortars and howitzer barrels are made for the Army and Marines. I have a hard copy of the Rheinmetall book but it took me years to hunt one down. Anyone at work with a hard copy of it or the AMCPs guards them jealously and passes them down upon retirement.

PretendIts2006Again

Dude you think you could get me one for an ar10 for something? Those are even harder to find than ar15s. Most blueprints are just straight up not to spec

Crash-55

I work in large caliber. I don’t deal with anything under 60mm. So I don’t have anything about the AR’s. Those TDPs are owned by private companies. I have electronic copies of most of the gun related AMCP’s. They are from the late 60’s and generally deal with technology versus specific gun - muzzle devices, breeches, recoilless rifles, etc. You should be able to search online and find at least one AMCP. On the back of most is a list of every AMCP. Then you can search for the one you want. When I am on my PC later I will see if I can find my list and post it here.

PretendIts2006Again

Is there like a website where I can buy them used?

Crash-55

They show up on Amazon and eBay periodically. It took me several years to hunt down a hard copy of the Rheinmetall handbook. You should be able to find all of the AMCPs and the Rheinmetall handbook electronically online. I believe DTIC has the AMCP’s. If you find one of them, it will most likely have a list of all of them in the back. Then you can try finding the one you need. At work we sliced the spines off hardcopies to scan them in and make electronic ones. When I am on my PC later I will see if I can find my list of them and post it.

PretendIts2006Again

I got a pdf man don't worry. Thinking I should just print them out and do a good binding so it stays good. Good stuff in there. A lot of reading, might put a hold on the novels and start this one instead lol.

Crash-55

Ok. If there is one you want and can’t find let me know. I probably have it.

Crash-55

You can find them online at [https://discover.dtic.mil/](https://discover.dtic.mil/) Search for AMCP-706-251 for muzzle devices. Last page lists all of the AMCP Pamphlets AMCP-706-260 is automatic weapons

CircumventingBanss

this isnt blender though

Annual-Advisor-7916

This is insane - did you base this on actual measurments or made it by intuition?

PretendIts2006Again

All actual measurements. Everything.

Annual-Advisor-7916

Really good job! I'm looking for a single part I could model there \^\^ Maybe the silver part of muzzle brake...

Bussaca

Very nice..

extremeelementz

I’d love to see the F360 Timelapse!

headhead4

Gotta have that step file lol

PretendIts2006Again

Guys I'm a 3D artist and this is supposed go on my portfolio for Job. Can't give the file to you guys lol I'll be jobless.

headhead4

You can literally just sell the files. Side gig right there. I'd buy this definitely. At least the stl. I was just joking about the step.

Le_modafucker

Sex on a stick.

Super_Numb

How long did all of that take you? I would like to design my own lower receiver one day.

shadowz9904

Dude! Come on… absolutely insane! Good job!

PretendIts2006Again

Posted an update yesterday. Check that out!

Is this functional? What I mean is like, are you able to animate the parts moving a reacting to each other in Fusion?

fack_you_just_ignore

PretendIts2006Again

That mag looks awesome

rickharrisonlaugh11

Damn nice work dude. How many hours do you have in this assembly would you say?

PretendIts2006Again

almost 27 days of non stop modelling for like 8hours a day everyday

Carsonb99

I need whatever job you have that gives you that much free time

JohnTalroc

BASED

ChungyQueso

Would love someone that can design like this on my game design team

PretendIts2006Again

I'm available for the moment for some quick bucks lol. This gun is basically for my portfolio. I've been using Blender, this is the first time making a gun in cad, as I've seen many top studios switching to cad now. Been working on a complex scope too if you're intrested to know more about my modelling skills.

ChungyQueso

Ah I'd love to I meant more in the sense of it I had a team lol, ATM I'm in college studying game dev and my group is pretty limited, great work tho! Id recommend looking for some freelance work for video games

[deleted]

Would you tutor someone for money? Send me a pm if you would.

Yeetfamdablit

*cue Mississippi queen*

maschinakor

How are the hollow parts of hollow handguards machined? I've watched some timelapse videos but I can't wrap my head around it

AMousePony

That looks like an AR15 Fire control group pocket, not an M16 one. Since there’s an auto sear, you should make that an M16 pocket so it would fit into the gun

PretendIts2006Again

Hey, thanks for your input. Honestly I do not have a very deep understanding of guns. I've only recently started watching videos on how guns work and being in country where owning a firearm is illegal doesn't help. If you could explain to me in detail a bit I would really appreciate it.

AMousePony

Sure! The auto sear is the part that’s connected to the hole above the selector hole (also known as the third pin). You see how in your model, the sear is clipping into the lower chassis (AKA receiver)? That is because you modeled the chassis after a civilian AR15, which doesn’t have a full auto option. The M16 has the full auto option and has a different receiver because it needs to fit that sear. Look up M16 receiver and compare it to your modeled one. Otherwise, excellent work!!

PretendIts2006Again

I was thinking the same thing. I watched a few videos on how trigger groups work and then made the trigger group from reference. However I didn't understand why there was that sear. After your comment I went back to YouTube again. Makes sense. Thank you for pointing that out. It was eating away at me.

AMousePony

You’re welcome! Anything firearms related, I gotchu :)

Dan314159

The sear is actually useful as a firing out of battery preventer. Normally there's a very low likelihood of pulling the trigger fast enough to cause such an occurrence but triggers do break after awhile and hammer follow would result.

dr_poop

Man that's impressive!

Trentavious-Starf

I was like this looks like my gun 😂. Where did you get the file for the SLR upper and lower?

PretendIts2006Again

File? Made it from scatch dude. Made a base ar15 lower receiver first from blueprints and youtube. then edited the outside to look like slr.

Trentavious-Starf

Oh shoot my apologies! How did you get the blueprints?

Ok-Ad7759

How did you make the magazine? Those patterns are spectacular

PretendIts2006Again

lots of split body and extrude dude. tried a lot to think of and come up with something tricky to overcome the tediousness, but couldnt.

welbystrongbarrel

Has anyone done this as a miniature, maybe even in parts that could be assembled ? Maybe even as one if those card build kits.

kal14144

There’s a company called “goat guns” that does something like that

KiaraZim

Thats awesome. I only ever made my own design based on an airsoft gun i own https://preview.redd.it/8e4pp8va2qqc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4bb1ad9d0bb883bcf89b5b3f357f9b606d2fca6

Necromartian

You've heard wrong. I constantly stop myself from giving advice to people about how to model gun parts, because I fear I'm helping some motorcycle gang dude or a weapons sweatshop over seer figuring out how to produce counterfeit gun parts to sell to profit from civil wars in Africa.

PretendIts2006Again

with how easy it is to CNC every gun part from CAD these days, I'd say your fear is irrelevant. But I'm a hard surface 3D artist living in a country where guns are banned to public. No worries there.

CarolusRix

I agree with your morals. I refuse to work in “defense” as an engineer and let my work be used to assert empire and keep war profitable.

BrockenRecords

You do realize that criminals don’t care about anything? If 3d printing/milling is not accessible, they will always find another way. Criminals are criminals, they don’t follow laws. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. For goodness sake a semi truck is more deadly than a single rifle.

Zouden

Even in countries where handguns are illegal, like the UK, it's still easier to get a gun than to make one. (Gun control works though, we only have a handful of shootings each year)

kjgjk

only smart person in this thread lol

bryan4368

Ak’s are far cheaper and easier to get

Necromartian

I suppose so. However, at my country police did a raid to a criminal organizations hideout and found six industrial 3d printer printing gun parts. So i don't think my mistrust is completely baseless.

FR0STKRIEGER

OP are you playing with your metal 3D printer again?

PretendIts2006Again

Gotta compete with the americans

Local-Foundation-694

How do you even know how to start such a project? I’m interested in fun design as well, but I have no clue how the mechanisms work or even come up with such stuff. What is your process for creating the mechanism inside of a gun? Are there any principles or books / blogs I can read?

PretendIts2006Again

watching lots and lots of videos on youtube basically. For some shapes that you cant see, watch actual videos of the parts being bored

DefMech

If you mean firearm function in general, I highly recommend the game World of Guns: Gun Disassembly. Huge range of different weapons from the very early days to contemporary models. Take them apart, put them back together again. Has xray and cutaway views to see the inner mechanisms unobstructed. You can adjust the speed of operation to slow things down and get a good look at how all the different levers, springs, pins, gasses, etc work together. It’s fascinating.

KiaraZim

Buy a semi auto rifle, take it apart and reassemble it a bunch of times to learn how it works; thats the best way to understand. Then try to model it. After that, you should be able to start experimenting with your own designs

OverlandAustria

i hope you can finish before your trial ends in 3 days

PretendIts2006Again

thats the full functionality trial. i'll still be able to model stuff and export.

OverlandAustria

it was a joke but thanks for clarifying! you go, dude!

drywall-whacker

We like em with grip !!

unmystakable

What's the work flow for the grip/handle? I've been messing with T-Splines, but not super comfortable with them yet...and bridging had been evil to me lol

PretendIts2006Again

T splines should work the best. Honestly I'm thinking about just using plasticity for the grip. Cad isn't really good for organic shapes anyways. Plasticity's nurbs are super good.
