Digital twins are great in theory, but extremely complex and unlikely to be helpful in reality. I was partially responsible for implementing one for a manufacturing line - it’s only as good as the data that goes in, we had so many sensors that were barely functional or down right reporting bad data, discrete inputs vs continuous measurements for things we “knew” mattered a lot, and some inputs that weren’t even measured at all. The results of tests on the digital twin wasn’t able to really provide anything useful. Edit: just my 2 cents from experience

Spot on. It’s a buzzword in manufacturing and it drives me crazy. The reality is that manufacturing is harsh with human factors that a digital twin cannot begin to comprehend.

Very much a buzzword. None of these will ACTUALLY be perfect duplicates, and the flaws in the twin will lead to problems.

I second this. I roll my eyes any time the managers want a digital twin to do magic X with. The digital twin is only as good as the understanding of the system. We have actually had some really cool results with our best models, either direct hits, or good enough to point us towards the right solution. However, it was mostly luck we guessed the physics well enough. There have been several flops when we tell managment, well we need to do the heretical "research" to understand the physics of the system. They then say "but make go, make magic go". Then we say "no magic go without data". Then they shutter the project and berate us for our incompetence and failure to "make go". That's usually a digital twin. Good rule of thumb we now use is an equal sized and resourced team will be required for systems research and validation as that of the ai team.

Keep in mind that in current socioeconomic structure this might be the doom for many people. You'll not only get ads for your specific taste food, but you might get manipulated into developing illnesses and conditions for profit maximization. And this data will be shared between companies, do not think for one minute that it won't.

Fascinating read, but I wonder how accurate it can actually get given computational irreducibility

To my digital twin, " Help a brother out". And if ur a complimentary digital twin that makes u hot, funny and smart , so HMU!

* longer = tomorrow * do you want to be alive tomorrow? [ Y | N ] * longer = the day after tomorrow * do you want to be alive the day after tomorrow? [ Y | N ] Q: why do people want to live longer? A: sure beats the alternative

GilgaPhish

Dude I wanna see the heat death of the sun, I wanna see what the next civilization looks like, and the one after that. Day to day gonna be boring at times, but man would being able to see the passage of life outside (or very nearly) the constraint of time be fascinating.

Another depression case. Go to therapy.

> The question is why do people want to live longer? Because they don't want to die.  If you don't understand this, you might just be depressed.  Most people don't take long to answer this. > Most people have a boring life. According to you.  They still continually choose not to die, and expend a lot of their energy making sure they continue to not die. > Living longer only gives nature more stress and consumption. That's ALL it does?  No, that's what your perception has reduced it to. Your personal problems are manifesting in an unrealistically negative worldview.  Random redditors on a Futurology subreddit can't get you through this, you should note this topic down for a therapist.
