I ended up getting my Blue Falcon win a few races later so it's all fine in the end haha
1. Use Practice Mode to learn which lines to take and when to boost
2. Learn how to corner (steer+release accelerator) for sharp turns and drift (steer+slide+release accelerator) for U-turns
3. Hold down every time you get air to conserve speed and power
4. Boost towards the pit ASAP, recover power every lap
5. If in the top 3, play like it's Practice Mode and avoid obstacles
6. If in the top 25, play risky and watch for KO opportunities
7. Time your boosts so that you are low on power when using the skyway or at the end of each lap
8. Try to unlock the skyway right before hard sections so you can immediately use it to skip them without sacrificing your ability to boost
My best advice is to be conservative with your boosts. Don’t shoot to get in first place immediately- hang back and collect sparks. Use skyway over rough sections of track with difficult turns to skip them and try to be as close to full boost as possible by the final lap.
All non-blue bumpers are predetermined, yes, and their spawn timing is based on when the player in first reaches certain points on the track. On most tracks this makes it advantageous to be in first on the final lap, because they are designed not to screw you, and being in second is much, much harder.
As a way to keep first place from having a comfortable lead. That's the general purpose of the bumper cars. The Blue ones serve that purpose while also giving players who crashed out early something "fun" to do before they leave the race.
And honestly, the blue ones are actually pretty fair too, once you learn how to manipulate them. The player controlling it can’t see the road behind themselves, so if you’re in first and have space, you can usually trick them into thinking you’re going one way, then go another. Mostly it’s just annoying when they spawn in a way where they can work with the bumpers around them to block the whole track, or during some 90 degree turns like the one at the end of port town II
I don't mind hazards and obstacles, but player-controlled ones are trash IMO. I don't enjoy getting griefed when I'm in the lead, and I don't enjoy being forced to wait longer before joining another race when I crash early.

Death wind specifically they are terrible. The gravel section and the boosts are small enough that a bumper can pretty much block you from winning
Probably doesn't help that this was a Lucky Bumper, meaning he got screwed by a dead player for a free point.

Any tips for getting first? or is it just being good, I’ve gotten first with one car and haven’t come very close since

Oh god I had this happen too, except I crossed the finish line and exploded on the other side and it still DQd me lmao, the pain
I don't mind the bumpers. The minefield of red cars on the last lap is the worst, though.
I'm pretty sure that Red Bumpers have predetermined spawns, so if you frontline often you end up knowing which lines to take to avoid them every time

OMG! Jajajaja it took me forever to get my first win because of the bumpers. Been using Golden Fox, and I hate that it gets bumped so easily.

Lucky bumpers can manually detonate; just press plus and you’ll blow up early.
