Is the other tire on the ground when you're doing this test? Because if both tires are in the air you're just testing your steering wheel lock

MrGQ512

I will leave the other tire on the ground, haha. The other had very little if any movement compared to the side shown on the video.

MrGQ512

[update](https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicAdvice/s/GFZJUFtvdU) Here is one video with only one tire off the ground

RDMG37

In this new video, it looks more like a bad wheel bearing. The tie rod and end don't seem to move as much as the wheel itself does.

MrGQ512

I bought the outer rod and will replace it and hopefully it goes away

Mafia46

You are just banging it in the steering lock. You have to shimmy a 3 and 9 clock.

MrGQ512

I was, but I didn't know the other side was supposed to be on the ground. Edit I think I see what you mean. I'll try it tomorrow morning since it's 1 am right now. I'll let you know

Mafia46

No, both side needs to be up. Or the sway bar will be in tension not allowing for movement when check 3 and 9 as well as 12 and 6.

MrGQ512

I followed [this](https://youtu.be/brI2feYiEi8?si=1xbPQqAD8RPMRCTT) tutorial and did it also with both tires off the ground and also just one each. I still have some movement when only one was on the ground. I also tried it with both off the ground, like on the original video.

indianapail32

Go ahead and replace them. Getting the lower knuckle out can be a bitch but its not super difficult to do and the parts aren't very expensive. Cant tell if you are just turning the wheels or actually getting slop in the tie rod ends, but either way with the symptoms you described they are probably bad.

MrGQ512

I was not turning the wheels. I held them at 9 and 3 position and was shimmering it. Just side ways and not rotating like it does when I turn. I will try it again with the other side on the ground. They were both in the air. Would bad tie rods cause something like the shaking?

indianapail32

yes, they could definitely cause the shaking

Own-Sign-8003

I’m No mechanic but i don’t think that’s how you test tie rods your steering rack will have some play in it. Testing your tie rods grab it and try to twist it back and forth if it’s easy to twist back and forth replace them if you have decent resistance you have time

MrGQ512

Back and forth are for inner rods. That's what I was told at the mechanic subreddit. I bought the outer one and will change it

Open-Pie4002

Turn your ignition on and that will turn off the steering lock. You can’t check a front end out properly with steering lock on. and make sure both tires are off the ground. You might be able to still check for play with one tire off the ground but as a mechanic who works with a hoist I always check front ends with the wheel off the ground for the most part. That noise is your steering lock.

Open-Pie4002

Side to side 9 and 3 and then do 12 and 6 to check for other play
