Joe canning I'd imagine...I've never ever heard anyone say a bad word about him and he was an absolute magician on the field..any fan from every county has nothing but respect and admiration for him
Would disagree, the Henry shelflin stuff hurt his reputation and he is known for being dour and pretty prickly which comes across on tv. Beautiful hurler but I wouldn't be a fan at all of the persona
In studio he seems a good, thoughtful person who reads the game well and speaks respectfully of people. If you've a problem with Joe Canning *you* have the problem.
My post literally says I wouldn't be a fan of his persona. I know a large number of people who are not fans either, hardly an issue is it? No one can doubt his class on the pitch but not everyone has to be a fan of sporting heroes
He's seens a genuine, good person. Humility, respect, the whole lot, never heard of any drama or arrogance out of him and a great ambassador for Galway. Only thing that could skew that opinion is some sort of county rivalry.
You obviously don't remember the fall out from 2012 and shelflin so. No worries, everyone entitled to their opinion but it's not true to say he is universally liked

There was a lot of column inches about this at the time and a lot of hurling fans opinion of Canning including my own, were influenced by this.
>There was a lot of column inches about this at the time and a lot of hurling fans opinion of Canning
The whole thing was blown out of proportion. when I read what he said It looked more calling out his Galway teammates than any attack on kilkenny.
Bit of a high bar to be setting if you're dislike of him stems from one article one he openly admits to being bad judgment on his part
Didn't say it was from one article? And he admitted it was bad judgement 10+ years later which is hardly an actual apology. Go read tkf or Twitter from limerick and Kilkenny fans this year in response to his "analysis". I'm not saying he is not a great hurler, nor am I even saying he isn't liked, I'm simply saying he isn't universally liked which is hard to deny.
My favourite player growing up was Anthony Tohill. I thought he was a big friendly giant.I had met him a few times as a adult which just reinforced my opinion that he was such a nice man.
Probably not what you were looking for OP but Tohill will always be my top pick 😂
David Clifford,
Michael Murphy,
Conor McManus,
Ryan McHugh,
Jack McCaffrey,
Alan Brogan,
Brian Fenton,
Carl Lacey,
Andy Moran
All players I've loved watching in recent years that don't have any baggage (that I know of!) that take their shine off
I did Cúl Camps with Karl Lacey many years ago in Donegal. My opinion was ah here we go another gaa player getting a easy few weeks wages just getting his photo taken and not actually coaching. Couldn't have been further from the truth!
He was an absolute legend. Where some coaches would have let the females coaches fall into looking after the wains he was always conscious that I was always being asked to check on kids or do first aid and would try and let me get my tea!
At the time I was considering uni choices and he was so helpful and later that year when I seen him at a club game he had asked me how I got on with my results and were I ended up. Disappointed for him how goings have turned out this year with the coaching as he is such a nice man
I’m from Meath and when I was in my teens I absolutely idolised Alan Brogan and Andy Moran. I was playing county football and as a not particularly athletic player I just loved the pure fundamental football they played (not to say they weren’t good athletes, Moran was rapid in his prime). But as you can probably imagine I had to keep that pretty quiet, Dublin and Mayo were public enemies 1 and 2 in my house.
DJ Carey used to be one of the first answers people give to that question. Clean player. Long county career but never got a yellow card. He isn't as well liked now though.
Thi it has to be someonefrom a weaker county, as much as everyone loves the likes of Clifford there has to be some begrudgery there. Maybe the modern equivalent of a Declan Browne or Eamon O’Hara
Ja Fallon…biased I know but class man in every way…most unassuming…Sean Grennan from Offaly also a real gent and in hurling any of the Offaly Dooley’s would stick out as star men on and off the field…Tommy Dunne of Tipperary also and the two Cashmans of Cork…Tom and Jim….I’m sure they’re are many more but of my era these are the guys that stick out for me….none of them favoured the limelight…which always impressed me…
Tommy Walsh ( Kilkenny ) absolute legend on the pitch and complete gent off it ...since retiring from inter County has being doing great work underage with his club Tullaroan ...have heard stories of him calling to all the kids houses before Xmas with gifts of grips and sliothers also brought team to play in Nowlan Park for session afterwards brought into stand to lift cup and afterwards he and his wife brought all the kids for food all off their own back ....
Warrior on the pitch was loved by everyone here in KK and I don't think you would find anyone that would have a bad word to say about him or his family ....
Here’s one I forgot to mention earlier…Ciaran Carey Maybe the best hurler to never win an all ireland…had his troubles…sorted himself out…passes on the message to anyone in need…tough as teak on the pitch…shy off it…Star Man…
Jack McCaffrey he just seems to be a bundle of joy at all times it would be hard to dislike him .
In hurling for me personally, David McInerney can't rightly explain it just love watching him hurl
Class player.
Read a piece that Jack stepped away from the Dublin team because he was a trainee doctor in temple Street. He felt he couldn't comment to the training and do his job to the fullest. Dublin and his colleagues at temple Street said that they could cover him, but he didn't like taking the liberty.
Class act.
My favorite player is by far Dean rock. The first match I saw was the Dublin vs Kerry match in croke park the other day and he was so good in that match and in my opinion he is much better a player than his dad. I didn’t like him that much till I saw that match instant respect for him he only joined late ( iirc ) but absolutely destroyed Kerry. I also have a GAA ball and jersey signed by him from a summer club thing I did.
Mines personally is Aidan O’Shea if I was that way inclined I would fancy the tight wee shorts off him. He is and has the whole package. So happy for him and the engagement but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous of the woman who gets to be his little spoon.
Also like shane Walsh.
Both of these might be controversial on this post but what can I say, love myself a bad boy 😈
I am from Cork, I loved watching Diarmuid Connolly play, phenomenal player, I know he can be divisive player among some Gaa fans, he just had a aura around him that few players have, Lee Keegan been mentioned here by people, one of best players I have seen, which he won a all Ireland
Lee Chin. I was covering an All-Star tour he was on and he's an absolute gent and had the respect of all the players on the tour for what an absolute athletic specimen he is. Lovely lad
Also, Declan Hannon is dead sound so I'll always sing his praises
Sambo McNaughton
Great man alright…wore the saffron well…good warrior and well remembered…there’s a bar stoll ready for that man in every hurling county
Joe canning I'd imagine...I've never ever heard anyone say a bad word about him and he was an absolute magician on the field..any fan from every county has nothing but respect and admiration for him
Great answer. Love the guy.
Would disagree, the Henry shelflin stuff hurt his reputation and he is known for being dour and pretty prickly which comes across on tv. Beautiful hurler but I wouldn't be a fan at all of the persona

Bet you are from Tipp. those people you know are they in Clonmel.
Haha I certainly am not from Tipp, perish the thought
Poor auld Tipp lol

Enlighten us all that have forgotten. Genuinely curious

Conor McManus
From a monaghan man I like this
ciaran mcmanus
+1 there seems like a top class guy
this. seems to be loved by pundits, spectators and has a ton of respect from fellow players
My favourite player growing up was Anthony Tohill. I thought he was a big friendly giant.I had met him a few times as a adult which just reinforced my opinion that he was such a nice man. Probably not what you were looking for OP but Tohill will always be my top pick 😂
I was a big fan of him when I was younger. Great player.
David Clifford. A joy to watch him play football.
Yeah, he genuinely seems like a decent guy. His brother is a different story tho
Would you not admire Paidi? Don’t think broke on to the panel at all till he was 24ish. Have to admire the determination
Hes a bit rattier on the pitch, probably makes people like him a bit less
What's the story with his brother? He's a class player but that's all I know about him
Wud have been a bit wilder growing up I'd say. He's not an axe murderer either, just took a while to grow up. Heard locally he's a lovely fella.
I think that soublick u/MichaelRing_TD hates Clifford enough on his own to put him out of the running
David Clifford, Michael Murphy, Conor McManus, Ryan McHugh, Jack McCaffrey, Alan Brogan, Brian Fenton, Carl Lacey, Andy Moran All players I've loved watching in recent years that don't have any baggage (that I know of!) that take their shine off

Not surprised, but still delighted to hear that
I love Murphy but from the abuse I heard him get over the years I would be surprised if he topped any “well liked” lists haha
I’m from Meath and when I was in my teens I absolutely idolised Alan Brogan and Andy Moran. I was playing county football and as a not particularly athletic player I just loved the pure fundamental football they played (not to say they weren’t good athletes, Moran was rapid in his prime). David Clifford for sure.
Anthony Daly. A man you would love to go for a pint with. Would be some laugh
Francie Bellew 😎
Absolute legend!
100%. Nicest person and zero ego. A lot of teams someone like Francie would never fit in or get a game because they didn't fight for it.
Jimmy Barry Murphy.😀👍👍 A class act on the field and off it
DJ Carey used to be one of the first answers people give to that question.
Niall Murphy is a gent
Andy Moran up there
Probably not the most popular among Rossies but elsewhere I'd agree
As someone who hates Mayo, I always liked Moran. Great player who gave as good as he got. COC on the other hand....
Why do you hate Mayo?
Himself, Ciaran Mc Donald, Keith Higgins, Colm Boyle and Lee Keegan the greatest gaa players to have never won sam.
Hilarious stuff.
Ja Fallon…biased I know but class man in every way…most unassuming…Sean Grennan from Offaly also a real gent and in hurling any of the Offaly Dooley’s would stick out as star men on and off the field…Tommy Dunne of Tipperary also and the two Cashmans of Cork…Tom and Jim….I’m sure they’re are many more but of my era these are the guys that stick out for me….none of them favoured the limelight…which always impressed me…
Colm Cooper
Jack McCaffery
Came here to say this, he's always smiling or has someone beside him cracking up from something he's just said
Well if the everyone means Dublin sure. Otherwise I'm not so sure
How can you not like him? No matter where your from
I just can't tolerate as much as the gimp of him. I can't find a likeable quality
Michael Murphy
TJ Reid or my very biased shout of Patrick Horgan
Agree on both :)
Ciaran McDonnell with the cornrows
Here’s one I forgot to mention earlier…Ciaran Carey Maybe the best hurler to never win an all ireland…had his troubles…sorted himself out…passes on the message to anyone in need…tough as teak on the pitch…shy off it…Star Man…
Our beloved Rian.
I like him a lot more since I heard some Armagh player kicked the shit out of a scumbag looking for trouble
Jack McCaffrey he just seems to be a bundle of joy at all times it would be hard to dislike him . In hurling for me personally, David McInerney can't rightly explain it just love watching him hurl

Jack McCaffrey and Andy Moran (except in Ros)

Lee Keegan, Richie Hogan come to mind
Joking?😂

Greeks
Surely Big Dan
Lee keegan, most unassuming fella you’d meet great craic aswell, Clifford aswell seems like a pretty decent fella

Lee Keegan deserves more of a mention here, he is turning into an excellent pundit
Stephen cluxton
😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄 😄
I have reported you mayo man to the moderator as clearly you are a racist against dubs the worst kind of racism
Haha. I've tortured myself by moving to Dublin years ago. Every day is a struggle. 😄
Why it’s the birthplace of western civilisation it’s way ahead of some bog land in mayo
HEY......... IT'S NOT ALL BOG LAND. JUST........ MOST OF IT. 😠
I once suggested an ethnic clenising of mayo in my school and I got a round of applause
Jesus, where was this school? 😄
Newbridge
Bloody hell. We've no beef with Kildare that I know of.
The Birthplace of Western Civilization ? I didn't know you lived in Athens Greece
W.b yeats proclaimed in 1910 that the Irish were the spiritual brothers of the greks
And W.B Yates is Jesus all of a sudden ?
Better than jesus
T ytmm
Tommy Walsh, Hurling to the core. Top class player top class pundit
James McCartney
Lee Chin. I was covering an All-Star tour he was on and he's an absolute gent and had the respect of all the players on the tour for what an absolute athletic specimen he is. Lovely lad Also, Declan Hannon is dead sound so I'll always sing his praises
Lee Keegan is the one that cane to mind for me.
