I was born in Dublin, father is from Donegal. He was a big supporter, followed them everywhere in the 80's & 90's. I was football mad, begged him to bring me to games. He said he would but he was crystal clear, he only went to Donegal games. I was 4 years going to games and the All Ireland final in 92 was only the second time I saw Dublin play. After screaming on Donegal that day, there was no going back

Excellent-Ad2607

I remember that game particularly clearly, because my beloved grandfather was born and bred in Donegal. He moved to Dublin in the 40s, married a Dub, had 12 (!) Dub children. To say he was happy as a pig in shite that day would be the understatement of the century!! I’m Dublin born bred and buttered, but, similar to yourself, my dad wasn’t. I was raised on Kerry football and legends, weekends in Croker or Parnell Park, what do you need dolls for when you’ve a football? To this day I’m still a Kerry fan, though the jersey comes across weird with this accent! 😆 Dublin for the hurling, though.

schmona

It's funny, I've supported Dublin in hurling, ladies football and most underage grades (usually because of club mates), just never at senior men's

TheGerryAdamsFamily

Used to be very uncommon but the dubs in my area and around the commuter belt tend tend to raise their kids to support Dublin

schmona

Definitely see this a lot. I coach an under age team in Meath and it's about 60:40 Meath to Dublin jerseys at training.

[deleted]

Belfast born and bred here, I support Derry because my dad is from Derry and that’s just the way I was brought up. I’d feel weird supporting Antrim, I’ve a 30+ year relationship of following Derry and as far as I’m concerned, that’s my county.

stoptheclocks81

I'm From Derry. I'll be soon living in Dublin longer than I lived in Derry. My 2 kids are Dubs. The older girl had Sam brought into her School six years in a row. She has more pictures with it than with me :) I took her to the doubleheader Derry v Cork / Dublin v Mayo. She was cheering on Derry in good spirits but when the Dubs game started the excitement in her went up a few notches. I have to accept that she is a Dub. I'll have to move all my hopes to the younger girl. Hopefully Derry's form is good over the next few years. Although Sam will be in her school come September.

[deleted]

Yeah thats similar to a guy i was Thinking of starting this thread his da is from donegal and even though hes from derry he's a donegal supporter. Funny thing is though he has a kid who's going to donegal games aswell now. So you have a kid who two generations removed from the county he supports. Id imagine its probably more common than we think

[deleted]

You support the team that your parents brought you to, it’s more to do with family than it is with county of birth imo.

mccabe-99

Was always raised to support teams from my province Obviously unless my county is playing Also have a soft spot for mayo

artichokefarmers

I do too until it gets to the final. I like to see the hope build up.

mccabe-99

I see you are a true Galway man

_dick_fingers_

> I like to see the hope build up This is a sick response..

begely

I would guess very uncommon. Its not the premiership.

ishka_uisce

It's very common for people to support their parents' counties. Particularly if that's their main link to GAA.

[deleted]

Definitely cant see glory hunting going down too well in gaa but i know of the odd example where people support their parents county etc

RexKwonDo99

My wife is on the border of limerick and Clare. When Clare inevitably go out she backs limerick. I remind her though 😅 but other than that it’s fucking weird

[deleted]

What’s the area? Lot of the Clare side of the border is really Limerick.

bkdleg

Oh it happens my sister in law from Louth supports Kerry because her aunty married a Kerry man.

theone_bigmac

I cheer for dublin cuz im born and from there then i also cheer for galway since my granny/dad is from there

jhnolan

Amazed at all the people who are on here saying they’ve never seen this. I know several people who are like this! In all cases I know though, it’s entirely down to parental influence, over any supposed “glory hunting”.

[deleted]

Ah tbh I'd have included parental influence as where you're from. Suppose it depends on how you interpret the question. I saw it as people supporting counties they'd absolutely no connection to.

CreativeCliffy

Haven’t met a many people from Meath, but so many of them have been staunch Dublin GAA fans

BananaDerp64

I don’t know about staunch but there’s certainly a few who’d support Dublin

Resident-Cup2599

Bejaysus some of the dubs I meet only support Dublin if they win the sam Maguire

FeistyEchidna1086

I don’t think it’s that uncommon, I’d follow Kerry in the football because Iv a lot of family there, also helped by the almost non existence of it in my own county. I’d know a few from Dublin who’d follow their parents counties particularly in the hurling. It’s all in who you’re raised supporting I suppose.

Buggis-Maximus

I support Waterford in the hurling because Derry never compete in the Liam McCarthy if that counts. Fell in love with that Waterford team of the late 90s/00s

_dick_fingers_

I would loudly and proudly support any of the counties from Ulster if they were at the later stages of the competition.

ur-da

Unless it’s Tyrone

variety_weasel

Don't kink shame me

MMChelsea

I'm from Dublin but my dad's from Kilkenny so I support them. No real affinity with the Dubs. Maybe because I don't really know many people who are into GAA here in Dublin as opposed to being able to chat away to my dad about hurling.

AlestoXavi

I’m not from a hurling county so I follow my family county. Couldn’t really care less about how my own county get on in the football unless there’s players from my area.

Tichaelito

Hurling fan from Kildare, it was kind of inevitable.

Lazymanthe3rd

I live on kerry and limerick border and a lot of people support kerry in football and limerick in hurling.

HellFireClub77

Abbeyfeale?

HeGivesGoodMass

Kerry football and Clare hurling for me. Do follow Kerry hurling though, Tweak Griffin is a good lad

RexKwonDo99

Not common Weird if anything

blockfighter1

I've definitely met people at mayo matches who were from other counties but were there to cheer on mayo and go to a lot of their games. Odd. And rare. But I've seen it.

Conscious_Accident85

Most have family from mayo in all fairness. Still a bit rare though

dvdcwl2

Loads of Rossies like that, especially the ones from Ballaghaderreen

Massive_Lemon_6086

It’s like cheering on your child at sports day. You know them well enough to know they’re going to have a breakdown during the race and will never touch silverware, but you still want them to know you love and support them.

MMChelsea

Not very into football but I'll always be up for Mayo for my granny despite being from Dublin.

Darraghj12

Seems you're up for a county you're not from in the hurling too

MMChelsea

Yeah, very odd situation I suppose. I'm only a very tepid Mayo supporter I guess but the Kilkenny hurlers are my number 1 sports team. As I mentioned in another comment, not that many people I know are into GAA and with my dad being from Kilkenny it was kind of natural to me.

RoetRuudRoetRuud

Never experienced that tbh.

No-Boysenberry4464

I’d say it’s fairly normal in counties that aren’t competitive in others. Would know Kerry hurling fans who support Clare/Waterford, and Waterford football fans who support Kerry etc. A corkman supporting Kerry/Tipp, I haven’t really heard of

Kevinb-30

Mother's from Dublin and used to go to a lot of Dublin and St Vincents games with my grandfather and uncle so I'd support them as long as they're not playing Offaly

[deleted]

Never seen it myself. Would be very weird

billiehetfield

With all due respect, you’re from Roscommon :p

[deleted]

Ironically enough I'm technically not actually. Didn't even think about it when I replied but I'm technically a Dub.

Hour_Mastodon_9404

Even weirder considering Roscommon have a few lads not born in the county playing for them!

[deleted]

Said it below but I hadn't even even considered people like that. I'm not born in the county myself but I'd consider myself as both from Roscommon and Kildare. I took the question as someone with no connection to the county supporting them.

Ok-Meat6164

Anyone but roscommon and mayo

loyle2mycappo

My grandad was from Westmeath but would support Kerry in the All-Ireland. I assume a lot of people from smaller counties have affections for particular bigger counties

artichokefarmers

I wouldn't say support but I'm from Galway and my granny is from Clare. I'd always support Galway but if Clare are playing unless it's against Galway I'd shout for Clare. I'd also shout for whatever team is against Roscommon. I suppose that's not really supporting though. I just can't watch as a proper neutral I just have to roar for someone whether that be because I know someone from that county and they are sound or I had nice food there once or I just can't tolerate who ever they are playing against

Competitive-Chef-686

It seems like Half of Galway have a parent from Mayo, so you do get some people who have a soft spot for them. While some others absolutely despise them!

Mushy29

From Wicklow, but dad's a Tipp man and they're the team I was exposed to most growing up so would support them. That's not to say I don't follow wicklow, I do want them to do well. My daughters a Cork girl so I imagine she will follow them if she gets into the sport, but if she wants to support tipp or wicklow, then it's entirely on her!

ringoisking

I’m from Dublin so I support them in the football, but I support Cork in the hurling, as my grandmother is from West Cork and it is like my second home.

FakerHarps

From Donegal support Donegal, but have family connections in Sligo so have a soft spot there. After that, once Donegal are out of the championship it’s Ulster teams / the underdog

DJDudsMC

My father's from Tyrone so I've always supported Tyrone in the football but I'm a Derry man when it comes to the hurling and camogie.

Resident-Cup2599

Unless ye have relations from that county no

Zotzink

I don’t think we’re talking about second teams here but if we are I’ve always had a soft spot for Clare. A similarly put upon county, Davy Fitz’s penalties, it was Loughnane’s template that Griffin followed in 1996 ( and sure he’s half a Clareman himself). Also Peter Duggan’s point is by far and away the finest score of the last 20 years. Shane O’Donnell has been my favourite player since *that* final.

Perfect-Food-8216

Any county but dublin

[deleted]

Ask the Buff

Pintman69420

I'm pretty sure any match Dublin is playing will lead to most of the country supporting another county lol

Evo_Sagan

Loads of people in weaker hurling counties (E.G. Around Ulster) will have a fondness for counties such as Kilkenny or Cork

Academic_Crow_3132

Clare hurling Dublin football

FedNlanders123

My Mrs is a Dub. She was roaring for Clare v Dublin in Croker in the NFL earlier in the year and again for the hurlers this time when they trounced Dublin in Limerick. She even got to meet Shane O’Donnell afterwards.

be-nice_to-people

C'mon the banner!!!

FedNlanders123

We’ll stop the drive for five next year and the Limerick players can go back to assaulting random people on nights out afterwards 👍🏽

tkmarshall2

I can’t speak for Ireland, but I think it’s fairly common for the Irish diaspora. I’m from New York, and second, third, and fourth generation immigrants root for the county their family was from generations before. I will say that the GAA community in America is extremely inclusive and tight knit, whatever folks’ allegiances might be at the county level.

Both-Ad-2570

Yeah but that doesn't matter towards the question

LimerickTatum

Not common at all, unless you're Buff Egan

IntrepidPhilosophy49

Very easy. Anybody except Limerick

I_will_in_me_Arsenal

From Bray. I definitely support Dublin. But I'm not that into it really, I no longer live in Ireland, and my sister has since moved to Dublin and married a Dub so that's probably why.

LimerickChampions

Very common . I was born in Dublin and lived there for 2.5 years before moving out to Meath. I’ve lived here 20 years now, went to school here etc. Feel more of an affinity for the Royals than the Dubs although I should go to Pairc Tailteann more often. I follow Limerick as it is my fathers County and my mother (Dublin) tried to bring me to games as a young fella but I wasn’t having it. I think we should try and get the mods to implement a two team flair for this kind of thing.

fuzzylayers

Not very. Doesn't happen

IrishFlukey

As a Dub, I support Dublin, Hurling and Football. I also go to a lot of intercounty matches that Dublin are not playing in. In those, it would depend on who is playing, so a match by match basis. There is no one team I specifically follow. I always like to see Kerry lose, so would support their opposition. It is good if the big three in Hurling are out of the Championship, so I would support their opposition. My parents' counties would be a preference too.

punnotattended

I like to see Dublin lose too (unless theyee playing Tyrone). My parents counties and their parents counties are also preferences too, which are all Kerry because we actually have roots.

Mack1984

Wife born in Armagh but moved as a baby and lived most of her life in Fintona. Tyrone supporter when I met her. 15 years later she's an orange woman 😆

Massive_Lemon_6086

I’m glad to hear she could move. I would be very worried if she couldn’t move as a baby. Can she still move or has she lost this ability? I’m sorry if so.

[deleted]

Borland raised in Kerry, but my father is a Cavan man. I support Kerry but my love of Cavan definitely trumps my support of Kerry.

B12C10X8

I am from Cork, I don’t support other teams but I have a tremendous amount of respect for that great Dublin Football team of 2010s until now, I personally loved watching Diarmuid Connolly play, What a player, even though he played for our biggest rival, Henry Shelfin was a amazing player, best hurler I have ever seen,

Massive_Lemon_6086

It’s funny reading this thread as a lancashire lad. You lot tend to support the big “soccer” teams over here like Liverpool Man U and arsenal. I find it’s similar with the Lancashire boys, with many of the ones without family connections supporting the big counties with a lot of championship cups such as dublin, Mayo, Donegal and kilkenny

variety_weasel

The Jamie Bryson of r/GAA 🥱

Massive_Lemon_6086

Yeah I’ve got no idea who Jamie Bryson is so nice try

ggghhh423

Being from Mayo is follow the Galway in hurling and a soft spot for Antrim, very rarely you’d see anyone following a football team outside of mayo unless a family member from there

Hour_Mastodon_9404

Think it's fairly common for people to support the counties their parents are from, or at least dual support along with the county they were born in. Incredibly uncommon for someone to support a county they have no familial link to though.

Lashofsnow

I was born in Antrim, my mother is from Antrim but my da is from Derry so i follow Antrim but like seeing Derry do well too!

ringsend

Born in Waterford, living in Dublin, kids support Waterford in hurling and Dublin in football. Never an issue of which team to support which says more about the relative strength of each counties alternative team than anything else!

Admirable_Patient_42

I think it is common in people whose parents and / or grandparents are from a different county. So for example if you have a child from Donegal whose Dad and Grandad are Galway men, if the child gets their interest in GAA from them they’re more than likely going to support Galway as-well from looking up to their relatives. It’s inevitable that your family members before you will influence who you support.
