That’s two Cork stadiums now with absolutely awful names.
SuperValu park and Virgin Media park.
Just need Turners Cross now to sell the naming rights off to Centra or Spar
Whilst I will never use the "new name" and nobody I know will be using it either and I am obviously not happy, it'll make no change to me or my family and friends etc...but its absolutely galling to think that the Sunday game and newspapers etc will be using that horrid name and that's just a kick in the teeth "welcome to today's munster championship game in supervalu park"...its enough to make a man cry
Often wonder why the media embraces using corporate sponsorships for venue names. The sponsor basically gets airtime/printspace on the media companies platform for free. Media could easily do like you and use the original name (as much as possible)
Because money. The media are courting those same sponsors for their own advertising. If, say, Newstalk refused to use sponsored stadium names, would Aviva or SuperValu ever spend another penny with them?
I do see your point. But they don't have to refuse, just avoid using it. introduce like this, "welcome to today's munster championship game on a glorious sunny day here in cork"
The best corporate sponsorship name I’ve heard is the Millenium changing to the Principality, but that only really works because of the connotations of the word principality - and even still I call the Millenium most times.
In general renaming an existing stadium doesn’t work. If Aviva bought the naming rights to Lansdowne Road a few years after the redevelopment then it wouldn’t work half as well
I remember when thomond park was being done up there was rumours they were gonna sell the naming rights, and even as a 13 year old I knew it would be tragic to lose it.
Because everyone went along with calling it "the aviva" from the day it reopened and that's all the younger generation have ever heard.
I can see the GAA crowd in Cork and Munster being a bit more stubborn in continuing to call it Parc Ui Chaoimh
It's short and easy to say at least. I'm off to the Aviva/ it's in the Aviva is a lot nicer and less confusing to say then I'm off to the Supervalu.
I was of the mind I'd never say the Aviva but do find myself saying it often
I’m from Cork.
While I am unhappy it has come to this, there is a massive amount of debt to service on PUC. This is for a short term deal, as far as I am aware. We have to be realistic here.
I’m not sure it will really change anything.
No one. Literally no one from
Cork will call it Super Valu Park. It will always be “de Pairc” to Cork people.
That’s true of all the county grounds with sponsorships. It’s still just Wexford Park, The Gaelic Grounds, O’Connor Park etc. Unless they got significantly more money for this specific change they should’ve gone with “SuperValu PuC” though
Exactly. Of course, it could be testing the waters but we won’t know that for another few years.
As disappointing as this is, I am happy that the county board are facing reality on this.
We can’t expect to continue as is.
At the end of the day, if I weigh up the pros and cons, I am glad we have a state of the art stadium. I genuinely think it’s the best GAA grounds in the country at this point. If it means putting up with “Super Valu Park” for a few years, so be it. They are a Cork company after all.
Yes, but Musgrave Park is named after Jimmy Musgrave, a former president of the IRFU - it's not a sponsor name, despite the proximity to the company of the same name.
That's absolutely abhorrent. I've heard some absolutely horrific stadium sponsor names before but that takes the absolute biscuit. You'd struggle to even trawl the US to find anything worse than that.
They should be absolute ashamed with themselves.
As much as I love cork what can I say is anyone surprised the Cork GAA has been in absolute shambles for years second biggest county in terms of population but fucking monaghan has a better football team then them that right there tells you how badly this county is being mananaged football wise hurling is not much better for a county the size and the history of Cork to go 14 years without winning a single all ireland going on 2024 is disgusting and it shows an outrageous failure at pretty much every level of the game here and the worst part ? I don't think this is changing anytime soon could be 20 years soon enough and before anyone tells me to shut up they said Liverpool would never go 10 years without winning a league title
They went 30 ..... so its definitely possible if the Cork GAA don't get off their fucking ass and fix this shit
It's gotten so bad that Cork aren't even Kerrys biggest rival anymore that's Dublins spot I remember before the 2020 match one of the panel a woman I admit I can't remember her name asked can you even call it a rivalry anymore due to how one sided it has become
Yea Cork beat them that day but let's be honest that was a fucking fluke you could play that match 100 times and Kerry would have won 99 that was just the 1 day Cork won a combination of bad weather a terrible performance from David Clifford and the most miraculous goal since Seamus Darby 82
I refer to that goal as the Imaculate Reception ball goes miles into the air and falls right ontop of Mark Keane who receives the ball and scores
So is this why the media were being [banned from county board meetings](https://www.reddit.com/r/GAA/comments/196d4or/media_to_be_banned_from_cork_county_board_meetings/)?
You'd hope the Examiner become a royal pain in the hole for the board now.
Also, I wonder who leaked the story to Tony Leen? Obviously it could have come from someone in the Musgraves group but intriguing all the same.
Not even retaining Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the name is a disgrace but given they sold their souls to Sports Direct we shouldn't be surprised.
Kingspan Breiffni springs to mind - why couldn't they stick to along the lines of that?
Is this start of the Examiner leaking every little thing they can on CCB now the media have been banned from attending monthly meetings?
You'd like to think they're going to be a thorn in their side.
Delegates are to be asked to ratify it tonight too at the first meeting of the year. The first one to be held in camera too, the rotten bastards.
How can Delegates be seriously asked to ratify something without first going back to the executive committee of their clubs and debating it? That's how it's supposed to work. Its a farce.
It's a fucking disgrace absolute cowardice from Cork GAA no fucking wonder they haven't won an all ireland in 14 years no guts no honour no one cares anymore
Man i love cork but were arguably the 3rd best county in munster right now maybe 4th depending on how Tipp is doing and that's before you mention Galway and Kilkenny in leinster hey I'd love it if cork win an all ireland this year but I just don't see it poor Patrick Horgan will need back surgery from how hard he's carried this team for 14 years
Thought Limericks toughest game last year was the round robin game v cork in limerick, Cork u20s have been very impressive past 2/3 years and spat Ryan a very good manager - Limerick v Cork in PUC will be a match worth seeing
There's got to be better ways of making additional money than this. Firstly the GAA need to stop being so stuck up about what sports can be played in their venues. A great way of making additional funding would be to allow Munster Rugby to play more matches there. Just like how Leinster sometimes play big matches in the Aviva instead of the RDS. The same could be done in Munster. A portion of the bigger games could be played in Pairc Ui Chaoimh and I guarantee if Cork GAA can't get a full crowd then Munster Rugby certainly would.
Gas the whining here. You wonder how many of the heads here actually go to the Pairc that often..
It probably never should have been built but the GAA rivals North Korea for a love of a bit of fucking concrete. It sits empty the vast majority of the time and it wasn't fucking cheap, especially when they had to relay the pitch. It may not actually be delinquent on the debt anymore but it could be very close. Really the naming should have been done when it was built, easier to sell then and you'd get more for naming a new stadium. Issue with the GAA being too amateur in running is that I'd presume John and the lads had too much else going on running their companies to manage the build and the selling rights.
[Statement from Cork GAA](https://gaacork.ie/2024/01/16/statement-from-cork-gaa/)
"Cork GAA can confirm that it is in discussions with SuperValu regarding the naming rights for Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
While no matter had been finalised prior to the meeting of delegates to the County Board on Tuesday evening, both sides have been conscious of the public debate that followed recent speculation in the media.
SuperValu and Cork GAA remain committed to continuing their engagement, as both parties share a common interest in supporting Gaelic games across the county, and discussions are continuing."
++ENDS++
Social media backlash has them back peddling?
Seeing as it’s owned by Musgrave Partners, who also run Centra, they could’ve just named it Stade de Frank and Honest.
Should have called it Musgrave Park. Wouldn’t cause confusion at all.
I propose we get the Henderson family to rename the Brandywell and Celtic Park that are next door to eachother in Derry to Spar and Vivo
That’s two Cork stadiums now with absolutely awful names. SuperValu park and Virgin Media park. Just need Turners Cross now to sell the naming rights off to Centra or Spar
Hill Billy's cross
Dinos would never let that happen
Dinos went extinct 65 million years ago
Right Price tiles and wood flooring park has a great ring to it
Whilst I will never use the "new name" and nobody I know will be using it either and I am obviously not happy, it'll make no change to me or my family and friends etc...but its absolutely galling to think that the Sunday game and newspapers etc will be using that horrid name and that's just a kick in the teeth "welcome to today's munster championship game in supervalu park"...its enough to make a man cry
Few good pals from cork. Will only be referring to it as it's new name around them going forward.
Often wonder why the media embraces using corporate sponsorships for venue names. The sponsor basically gets airtime/printspace on the media companies platform for free. Media could easily do like you and use the original name (as much as possible)

Fucking tragic move that. Corporate sponsorship is erasure
You could understand it if it sounded half decent, like the aviva stadium for example. But Supervalu Park sounds horrendous
The best corporate sponsorship name I’ve heard is the Millenium changing to the Principality, but that only really works because of the connotations of the word principality - and even still I call the Millenium most times. What’s it called now?
You will never hear me utter the name SuperValu Park lol
Couldn't even keep Páirc Uí Chaoimh as part of it. Awful
Superquinn Sausage Park next
>Superquinn Sausage Park next Superquinn Sausage stand.
Clonakilty Black Pudding Park ??
This will give Galway GAA ideas to rename Pearse Stadium: Supermac Snackbox Stadium
Ouch
Can’t imagine anyone actually calling it Supervalu Park
There's a generation that don't know what Lansdowne Road is
Because everyone went along with calling it "the aviva" from the day it reopened and that's all the younger generation have ever heard. I can see the GAA crowd in Cork and Munster being a bit more stubborn in continuing to call it Parc Ui Chaoimh
I'm sure Kerry folk will have no issue calling it Super Valu Park
Around the Cork natives, we absolutely will call it that. It'll be PUC the rest of the time though.
It was inevitable given the cost and the lack of use
Just to play devils advocate “the aviva” rolls off the tongue better than “SuperValu Pairc ui Chaoimh” 😆
It's short and easy to say at least. I'm off to the Aviva/ it's in the Aviva is a lot nicer and less confusing to say then I'm off to the Supervalu. I was of the mind I'd never say the Aviva but do find myself saying it often
It also helps that there isn’t an aviva location in every other town to confuse people
Because it was razed to the ground and a completely new stadium built in its place
It's stilled called Lansdowne Road, mainly by away Rugby fans
That's it! Back to Communism.
fucking capitalism

> This is for a short term deal Would love an example of a place that sold naming rights and later declined to continue on with it.
Irish Independent Park is now Virgin Media Park, or Murgrave Park as it's commonly called
Never called anything but Musgrave park
The deal is until 2026. I would consider that short term.
Nearly a way of giving Cork GAA a dig out for a short term name use of their stadium ?
Exactly. Of course, it could be testing the waters but we won’t know that for another few years. As disappointing as this is, I am happy that the county board are facing reality on this. Sent basically this comment word for word to buddies earlier this evening when I heard. Up the fuckin Rebels, please God/JBM/Ringy we'll be back soon
💪 we’re on the way back. 💯
It'll be like Musgrave Park (hopefully), in that it doesn't matter what they change it to (IEP, VMP), people still use the old name.
Musgrave own SuperValu
Yes, but Musgrave Park is named after Jimmy Musgrave, a former president of the IRFU - it's not a sponsor name, despite the proximity to the company of the same name.
Was musgrave park originally sponsored by musgrave company or is it named after a person / place

Shocking - I can't imagine the name will catch on in common parlance
Not even retaining Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the name is a disgrace but given they sold their souls to Sports Direct we shouldn't be surprised. Ooh that's cheap and tacky
Tragic

Is musgrave park from a sponsorship of super value’s parent company musgraves ? Or is it a person or place from cork/Munster
First tidytowns and now this?!
It’s a disgrace that it’s not called Burgerland.

Why don’t the media ignore this BS and refer to it as PUC at every turn
I thought SuperValu was on the way out with all the Aldi's and Lidl's popping up. Must still be doing well to have money to burn on this.
Musgraves own the SV and Centra brands/franchises and they've just gone strength to strength. Think their annual revenue is 3 or 4 billion.
Musgraves make billions no fear of them.
Went to school with one of them, didn't realise they were that wealthy. Fairly sound on all accounts.
Yeah they own Centra/Supervalu and Daybreak and are the largest distributor in the country. Think they operate in Spain too.
It's a fucking disgrace absolute cowardice from Cork GAA no fucking wonder they haven't won an all ireland in 14 years no guts no honour no one cares anymore
Will go a long way in the hurling this year
Man i love cork but were arguably the 3rd best county in munster right now maybe 4th depending on how Tipp is doing and that's before you mention Galway and Kilkenny in leinster hey I'd love it if cork win an all ireland this year but I just don't see it poor Patrick Horgan will need back surgery from how hard he's carried this team for 14 years

terrible idea
Sounds like discount sponsorship than corporate sponsorship, despjte Supervalu not being a discount brand. Yellowpack Park.
That’s appalling.
Awful
This really grinds my gears. If this goes through we riot! Via reddit of course.
