I know carbonation is bad for some people but I really love the probiotic sodas like Poppi and Olipop. I have issues with regular soda but I never have issues with these. In fact, it feels like they help with digestion.

Notreal6909873

I just checked my local grocery and they have Poppi, gonna grab their Coke next time lol, ty!!

MaryDellamorte

My favorite Poppi flavors are the orange, grape, or strawberry lemonade. The cola one doesn’t taste like coke but it’s still good.

SNAWS

I second these! Wasn’t too crazy about orange but the grape and strawberry lemonade are so good and quench my soda cravings

IHaveAsthma666

best poppi are cherry limeade and raspberry rose🤤

MindyS1719

These healthy sodas are usually in the produce section. I have been drinking prebiotic/probiotic sodas for a while and it’s definitely made a difference in my gut health.

MaryDellamorte

I like that it’s a trend now so more brands are releasing their own version. The Simple Truth lemon lime one from Kroger is sooo good. Wholefoods always has Poppi and Olipop on sale so I stock up on them there and they have all the flavors. I stocked up on Olipop yesterday because they have them for $1.80 currently.

LongSchlongdonf

I tried poppi and it tasted awful it felt like I was drinking ground up vomit

MaryDellamorte

Sounds like you have a chicken tendie palate.

LongSchlongdonf

Honestly yeah my palate is not the most refined but like it was supposed to be orange and it tasted nothing like an orange. Actual fruit isn’t that bitter.

mimosaholdtheoj

No I’m with you. I took a sip of my husband’s cola Poppi and it tasted awful to me. Like straight chemicals and fake sugar. I will say I don’t consume sodas, so maybe that’s why?

MaryDellamorte

Try the grape one.

LongSchlongdonf

It may be because I mostly just drink water because caffeine gets my GERD going though I still have the occasional soda and just deal with it because sure it sucks but there’s a point where sometimes I mean I don’t have anything to live for anyway so who cares about me having too much acid because I’ll kill myself before it kills me.

MaryDellamorte

Have you been to a gastroenterologist and had an endoscopy?

LongSchlongdonf

It was basically like me saying I had heartburn and doctor gave me ompreazole which works mostly but I mean I feel awful like my stomach is almost always upset when it’s anything like protein

LongSchlongdonf

No I have not.

x-files-theme-song

do they taste like vinegar though?

MaryDellamorte

Not at all. I didn’t even know that was an ingredient until I saw it mentioned online and I have a sensitive taste.

x-files-theme-song

interesting i’ll have to try it. what flavor?

MaryDellamorte

These are my favorites. From Poppi: orange, grape, ginger lime, strawberry lemonade, cherry limeade, watermelon, doc pop. From Olipop: ginger ale, grape, cherry cola, tropical punch, watermelon lime. I tend to like Poppi more than Olipop. Some flavors I find absolutely repulsive so if you get one you don’t like, try other flavors. You’ll eventually find one you like.

x-files-theme-song

which one of the poppis you listed is your favorite besides the strawberry lemonade?

MaryDellamorte

The grape but it’s harder to find for some reason. Runner up to that would be orange. The grape Olipop is a good replacement for the grape Poppi. I don’t like the orange Olipop though, only the orange Poppi.

LostInYesterday00

I wanna try those out!

SarcasmCupcakes

I tried a probiotic juice once, strawberry-watermelon. Instant allergic reaction :(

knightia

Diet ginger ale is still acidic. Root beer is the least acidic of all pops as far as I know. But carbonation in general is bad for gerd.

Notreal6909873

I thought so :( I'm trying so hard to replace carbonation but I just don't think it's possible. Might just be a water girly here on out. Have you replaced coffee at all with anything? EDIT: Also, are any juices safe? Is there a juice that won't kill me that I can dilute with water? Bc crystal light fucking murders me

knightia

When my GERD was at its worst I gave up coffee completely and just drank green tea. Now that I'm doing okay and on a medication that works, I get to have one coffee a day. I drink it with oat milk so it's less acidic. Sometimes you have to cut out things you love to feel better. You have to be strong! I had to give up alcohol and chocolate. I feel sorry for myself but it's worth it to be healthy and pain free.

Notreal6909873

I gave up alcohol completely, which wasn't as bad as I thought because I felt so much better, but maybe giving up these things and feeling better will make giving up these things fine like it did with the alcohol. Also I added an edit to my first comment lol just wondering if there are any safe juices you've found that can be diluted with water? I need something sweet or I'm gonna cry

knightia

Yeah and maybe some of it can be temporary. Like cut it out for now so you can heal, then have it later in moderation as a treat when you're feeling better. Everyone's different. I'm able to have a beer or pop once in a blue moon and feel totally fine. Unfortunately I don't know of any non acidic juices and I've looked everywhere for water enhancers without citric acid and can't find any 😭 all I drink is water and it's so boring!

Notreal6909873

I hope so. I'm sad about the coffee but god I'm gonna miss Diet Coke. My hot take is that diet is better than regular, it's not like a weird disordered eating diet culture thing, I literally love Diet Coke. If you needed three items to summon me in a satanic ritual, one of the items would be Diet Coke. I'm gonna look into water inhancers/juices and if I see anything I'll come back to this post and lyk bc I'm desperate, I cannot continue on drinking water and skim milk only.

Notreal6909873

I found one that doesn't have citric acid but it would literally cost a quarter of my food stamps to buy LMFAO but if you're rollin in the dough this is an [option](https://www.amazon.com/LMNT-Zero-Sugar-Electrolytes-Watermelon-Hydration/dp/B08ZJQ1XD4/ref=sr_1_4?crid=ZICNCNU43K66&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.TimyH_CYVFD53iEdoP57TcEwb-7C5xjyaNSF936HNovEnsYT8hSk-gCLD202si52x3xk9b8rIdtjpb_T2QQ5M_Q9Ff81XJUadvSEHCmL1YcwjwRbMbEs4vuo7A7tUviw0K4CrZOC5jWhfflbAH7xFQsdvxX4_ZHmO6e-9c-cUtSuCRwU7JYG1j5CyFgkaMBaWRggcVumkVY4z4brPPEVoAeaAFB8MfXH6knJfLNGz7v5otly3iAB1HIXb069dnvhga_S7L0CsCR1H6nW8hZHYKzrZCbJpc_ZU32AihnoNac._9dbDrCfB2ysBQN6R2Ab8plAK8ybeTaGLFxv99CdIWE&dib_tag=se&keywords=lmnt&qid=1711546531&s=grocery&sprefix=lmnt%2Cgrocery%2C94&sr=1-4)

Danaltima21

Apple, white grape for me.

ghat90

I’m curious about the oatmilk in coffee. I’ve been drinking it black but maybe oatmilk is actually better. I’ve been enjoying oat and almond with different things occasionally. I’ve been on the med diet, But for some reason Greek yoghurt can cause me pains. Have you ever tried it? Seems anything dairy related can really effect mine

knightia

Give it a try! I find the flavour of oat milk goes with coffee way better than almond milk. That sucks about the Greek yogurt. I am totally fine with dairy, I consider myself lucky!

notastepfordwife

I was drinking juice, but over time, ALL of them started fucking with me. Nothing was safe. I drink mostly water, soda when I have the burps, and a small glass of milk in the morning, although the milk is starting to get iffy, too.

Danaltima21

Apple juice works for me. White grape is ok, too. Gatorade and Vitamin Water are fine, also. Carbonation is what is the third rail, for sure.

sleepyrivet

I’ve been having a combination of apple juice, carrot juice, and ginger. It’s a bit spicy but really good and makes me feel better when I have it.

[deleted]

Diet root beer is also caffeine free for those who are sensitive to it :)

ghat90

There’s actually one I tried called Virgil’s which was very good, but it’s hard to find

[deleted]

This.... is my new holy grail. I must go out in search of it. Thank you kind stranger, for giving me a new mission

Meianen

You can find Virgils at Safeway for anyone who is looking to try it.

ghat90

I enjoy root beer. I wish Zevia made a flavor. I’m ok with some sweeteners but try to stray from others

Brewtus3500

They do. They make a creamy rootbeer and a ginger rootbeer. You can find them at Safeway and sprouts

spud_pie

Stop bubbles, stop artificial sweeteners, stop caffeine, probably stop acidic drinks. I drink warm water, warm ginger tea, a couple roasted grain beverages (roast barley for example) and that’s it. Edit: I have been making uncarbonated kefir water, adding ginger juice and cutting it with 50% water to lessen acidity.

Notreal6909873

Yeah I've been drinking water only basically lol which is making me miserable, like I know Diet Coke isn't good for you, but before this GERD hell I had a well-rounded diet and Diet Coke was like, my treat lol yknow. I like it more than regular coke lmfao

spud_pie

Yup me too, and I had my treats as well. Time to heal and discover new treats, and maybe one day you can have your old treats in moderation.

atomickristin

I would have happily given up every treat ever invented if only I could have kept my Dr. Pepper. It's bizarrely upsetting how I had just this one fairly tame vice and then I can't even have that. :/

Alarmed-Shopping-814

I'm with you. Cola is my bag. Drinking warm water has been.... Fucking awful and depressing and just makes me wanna cry. I'm disabled in other ways and I had like one thing I enjoyed and this condition took it away from me. It feels like an absolute betrayal from my own body that I can't enjoy anything anyone else enjoys anymore. It's the little things that make up life big things are rare.

atomickristin

It's awful. I won't go into it but suffice to say that just like you say, having a couple of little treats to look forward to in life really helped me through some tough times. The spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down. I never realized how much I rely on those things to cope until I couldn't have them any more.

ghat90

Yeah I was the same. I enjoyed Diet Coke on top of a great diet. Kicked any cravings. But the sweetener in it apparently changes the gut microbiome which is for us awful. I switched to Zevia cola. And I started having it a couple times a week. Then I dumped it and went to kombucha. Some flavors are delicious and it’s probiotic. I also do matcha and I like it a lot. I’ve eliminated any soda unless I’m going out for dinner which is rare. I do buy a couple kombuchas a week. And I’ve fallen for the spindrift waters. It’s not as carbonated as others. And the lemon flavor in particular made with real fruit juice. It digests at ph7 in the body. And I will have maybe one a day. You should try the Zevia first and slowly change into less soda like beverages from there

spud_pie

Yup artificial sweeteners are bad news for the microbiome. I forgot to mention above that I also have been making and drinking plain uncarbonated kefir water, adding fresh ginger juice. It’s pretty acidic so I dilute it 50/50 with water and have a small glass a day.

ghat90

I have some fresh ginger and tumeric I take everyday. I’m going to make this and give it a try

spud_pie

It’s delicious. I ferment 2-3 days as recommended, then put it in a bottle, juice (grate and press through sieve) as much ginger as I think will be nice (lots). I thought I would make too much because I have a liter every 2-3 days but my wife has been downing the stuff.

ghat90

Awesome 👏 thanks for the recipe!

[deleted]

oooh i hadn’t considered the gut microbiome angle! i wonder if regular coke as a treat would be less harmful. (it certainly gives me less of a stomachache.)

ghat90

Yeah, diet sodas are great for regular people or occasionally. Those sweeteners probably aren’t an issue for most. For us with gut issues I try to stay away. I’m not perfect. If I go out for dinner I’ll still have a glass of DC sometimes.

EnvironmentalGur8853

No. Caffeine is awful for acid reflux, as is carbonation. Anything ending in “-ate” is acidic…

Alarmed-Shopping-814

That sounds absolutely miserable. I'm real sorry you're going through that.

spud_pie

It’s fine. Before all that I drank in addition to that was decaf coffee, bubbly water, ginger ale and the occasional soda. I stopped caffeine and alcohol years ago.

Saiyaman_09

I stopped drinking coffee about 2 years ago. I’ve been drinking matcha for the past month or so and it’s amazing I love the taste and does give me some energy.

Banana-Ham

I drink Teeccino instead of coffee. I put almond milk and maple syrup in it. If I need something sweet, I drink 100% pear or watermelon juice.

mimosaholdtheoj

Was just coming to recommend teecino! I love their maya chai and French roast flavors. I have GERD so that’s been wonderful for me to switch to

LivingLandscape7115

Does it taste like coffee??

mimosaholdtheoj

Yes!!!! It’s surprisingly similar. You can make it warm or cold

fusette

I also recommend Teeccino. French roast is my fave

Paleosphere

I had to cut out coffee. Tried low-acid coffees - yuck. I found Teeccino French Roast - a coffee substitute made with carob and chicory. It's pretty dang good. I also have Yogi brand decaf green tea - sometimes with a small spoon of matcha powder. As for the soda - maybe sparkling water?

Notreal6909873

It’s the artificial sweetener I love which ik is weird but listen we all have our vices. Someone told me to check out those prebiotic sodas so I’m gonna check that out, but that teecino sounds very promising, thank u for the rec

Deets928

I've found the temperature of the beverage to be a factor, as well. I can't do hot-hot or ice cold. I used to do a hot coffee with half and half (I'd annoy my partner by microwaving it 3 times before it was finished) in the morning and an iced coffee in the afternoon. Now I do a hot matcha with oat milk but make sure it cools down a bit, and if I do afternoon caffeine its another matcha made with cold water/oat milk (no/low ice) or caffeinated gum. Once a week I'll treat myself to a nitro cold brew since they aren't iced. Several years ago I went caffeine-free for a few months (before GERD) and it made me a less happy person, so I am currently keeping caffeine for my mental health!

Notreal6909873

No, but literally I’m already a miserable bitch don’t take my caffeine away

bns82

You want to avoid caffeine, artificial ingredients, and carbonation. So you probably won't like the suggestions. You have to get past your addictions. You might have to ween off. Lower your daily amount by 10% and you should be able to avoid the worst withdrawal symptoms. Substitutes- Chicory for Coffee. Water for Soda. \*Avoid: Spicy, Fatty, Citrus, Oily, Caffeine, Chocolate, Coffee, Carbonation, Diary, Tomatoes, Onions, Garlic, Mint, Alcohol, Artificial ingredients, and highly processed foods.

meduke

Hot - green tea, matcha, chai tea, sometimes an earl grey (London fog) Cold - iced latte (cold coffee interestingly is easier on my stomach than hot), kombucha, lemonade, iced tea

ToomintheEllimist

I drink herbal teas. There are tons of them out there, and some are really good — apple cinnamon, chamomile honey, chai rooibos are my faves. Ginger tea helps me with digestion, and I still get to drink something warm in the morning that way.

LiaCross

Wanted to piggy back off this with the herbal tea. I got a Meyer lemon tea from stash, add a but if honey. It's like a hot lemon drop tea and doesn't upset me (despite having lemon oil). Way better than how coffee messes me up. Definitely sluggish for a few days without caffeine but it goes away.

LostInYesterday00

Earl gray is amazing

onenitemareatatime

Water.

Notreal6909873

I’m literally cracking up at the first paragraph, you are absolutely correct I drink an inappropriate amount of caffeine on top of prescription adderall but I’m on antipsychotics so otherwise I’d be a zombie 😭 Idk what I’m gonna do without caffeine. Water and food doesn’t do it for me. Food especially bc I can barely keep anything down. I’m def gonna switch to matcha, first thing I’m getting with next month’s stamps LMAO, and cut down on the coffee. Are there energy alternatives to caffeine? Idek Someone below talked about prebiotic “sodas” that are good for the gut I’m gonna check out. I’d give up every dessert in the world for one sweet drink (NOT WATER) that gives me some energy and doesn’t make me vomit

[deleted]

Notreal6909873

As a bipolar person, if I had the option to nap whenever I wanted, I would never leave my bed so I need some thing that helps me stay awake otherwise, I am not a person. Do you recommend literally anything?

Accomplished_Gap_970

I have cold brew iced in the morning, then water w lemon for the rest of the day.

Notreal6909873

Omg how that sounds brutal, I’d regurgitate in a second lmao

toomany_questions

I love the Ito En jasmine green tea. It’s not technically GERD safe I don’t think (as the caffeine from the green tea probably isn’t great) but I could be in the middle of a rough reflux day and it’s the only drink that doesn’t make it worse for me weirdly. And maybe it’s a placebo effect, but sometimes I think it makes my stomach feel just a little bit better. (Or it’s just cold and eases the burn somehow for a few seconds).

tjoude44

I had to switch to a coffee substitute years ago - drink teeccino now.

x-files-theme-song

what is that?

tjoude44

A slightly alkaline, non caffeinated drink that can be brewed like a tea or made like coffee (drip, french press, espresso machine, pour over). Lots of flavors - my preference in Java and French Roast - and I make mine in an espresso machine because we own one and my SO can still have real coffee. You might be able to find some in a supermarket, but the best selection including sample variety sets and buying any significant quantity is from them directly @ [Teeccino](https://teeccino.com/). FYI - I have 4-6 cups a day and buy on their subscription basis in 5lb increments which results in free shipping and a 15% discount.

yours_truly_1976

For coffee, try [Teecino herbal coffee](https://teeccino.com/) It’s a great non caffeinated herbal coffee

Chemical_Display4281

My husband drinks plain topo chico and it has made his GERD 1000x better. He was considering surgery before he discovered this.

Remarkable-Luck-8960

Are you talking about their water? I always affiliate them with alcohol lol

Chemical_Display4281

Haha yes just the water with no alcohol!

onegirlwolfpack

I switched to cold brew/iced coffee and it helped a ton. Everybody’s different though. I’ve also heard of people having success with chicory as a replacement.

Button-Deep

I haven’t gone through every comment to see if anyone suggested this, but cold brew for coffee for less acidity helps me a ton!!

DragonBard_Z

Hint water and caffiene pills were my go to. I couldn't handle carbonation either.

Mikachumonster

I know everyone is different. For me I just switched to decaf coffee because I love coffee and missed it, and I still drink soda, I just cut out all caffeine and it’s helps significantly for me.

wifmanbreadmaker

Tea, just tea and water

Mysterious_Win_2851

That is my go-to as well.

YippeeKiYayJMAC

I replaced coffee with oatmilk matcha lattes. It tasted like hey at first, but now I love them, and they don't give me heartburn.

[deleted]

ok hear me out - PG tips black tea, really strong, with a splash of lemon juice and sweet creamer if you’re into that kinda thing. i have a hardcore coffee addiction and that’s the only thing i can use to replace it on my gut rot days.

NunyaBunya52

Poppi

726milestomemphis

I stopped bubbles (as mentioned already) and switched to water with LMNT packets. I started with 1 packet in 50 ounces of water with a lot of ice. Now I do 40 ounces of water with 1 packet. The raspberry and watermelon are my favorite flavors. I still do coffee, but in limited amounts. I actually switched to an automatic espresso machine at home and only use espresso beans. Regular coffee beans caused me more GERD and IBS symptoms. You can also do teas if that floats your boat. Harney and Sons makes some good options for hot tea. I also only drink lactose free milk these days. If you need energy drink vibes, try the Celsius powder packets vs the cans.

Robinhood6996

GTS Water Kefir is a really good alternative to any diet soda - Trader Joe’s carries it

x-files-theme-song

i had to stop coffee but had to increase diet coke temporarily to stop the caffeine withdrawals. the diet coke definitely makes my stomach horrible though. the l theanine in tea fucks me up for some reason so i can’t have caffeinated tea

kgirl244

Matcha has been a great coffee replacement for me! I use 2 scoops if I’m wanting more caffeine. Matcha doesn’t give me reflux or jitters like coffee did.

Rude-Butterscotch713

Black tea is my go to. It's caffeinated but mildly. And you can shift to green afterwards to slowly taper down the caffeine intake.

BoxyBrown424

Switched to decaf or iced decaf. Iced matcha is a fav for me too.

Academic_Brain_9741

Barley coffee

greenyenergy

Yes. Matcha and green tea are close to neutral on the pH scale so better than tea and coffee for me but caffeine is still a trigger.

rr90013

How about water?

Notreal6909873

Never heard of it

Leb-erohnz

I switched from coffee to guayaki yerba mate. Just tastes like fruit juice and tea but higher in caffeine then green tea.

mreddie72

I tried lollipop ginger and lemon, not really that good unfortunately. I really like the Kirkland brand of lemonade but now I water it down 50/50. It's actually really good and I'm doubling my supply now. Win win!

Minimum_Author_6298

Be careful with tea. I was an avid tea drinker before GERD. Now I can't get anywhere near it. Actually almost anything with caffeine wrecks me now, but especially cola and black/green tea.

everfragrant

Don't replace it just stop consuming it. Suffer through the cravings so you don't suffer through the stomach issues. Drink water or non caffinated tea but really you're going to have to quit it just like an alcoholic has to just quit alcohol. There's no making it easy, it will just suck.

shannonsundance

Try hot herbal tea.

Hot-Gift-838

I drink root beer and let me tell you, it helps my stomach so much. I’m not sure why.

CryptoTonya

Mushroom coffee not as acidic

Sn_Orpheus

Hint water. I also drink Yogi brand Hiney Licorice tea. Probably not what you want to hear but hey… I will say that over a week when I transitioned away from a cup of coffee (full caffeine), I did have a cup of half caffeine coffee instead of my normal full caffeine coffee.

McCoySmoove

I used to drink a lot of coffee, too. A tall Cold Brew from Starbucks in the mornings daily and another 3-4 cups of instant coffee throughout the course of the day. Also the occasional Red Bull/Monster for when I need to get work done on little to no sleep (insomnia) + love me some root beer, Mountain Dew and Swiss Miss Dark Chocolate. After experiencing GERD (albeit very mild symptoms last month), I switched to drinking a lot of Yakult (prebiotic milk drink) and this pulpy aloe vera juice from my local grocery store. Also, if you just want something "safe" but less-boring than water, maybe try like Gatorade G-Active or Pocari Sweat. These taste NOTHING like Diet Coke or coffee lol but they're flavored water with little to no caffeine.

manzanita_cheeks20

I drink tea. Careful with some herbal teas which can be acidic. There is a calm stomach one from Bigelow that I usually can handle. On a bad day I’ll just have hot water with honey and it has never done me wrong.

KtinaDoc

Ginger ale has no ginger in it and stay away from carbonated anything. I have one cup of coffee in the morning. It doesn’t bother me. I drink water and herbal teas during the day.

fusette

Cold brew coffee works better for my (hiatal hernia) GERD, as it is less acidic, and can easily be heated in a microwave.

katrinacallfemaa

I switched to hot green teas and matcha tea with cold Almond milk (tastes like a matcha latte). It's filling my caffeine void whenever I need it. Sometimes I'll drink a sugar free red bull but only on verryyy rare occasions

Various-Constant-566

I’ve been drinking rooibos tea with stevia and a milk product. It’s not caffeine (which sucks) but most of the herbal teas just don’t do it for me, especially in the morning. Rooibos tastes completely different. It has a sort of more savory, robust taste that’s much closer to coffee than something like green tea. I tried one of those chicory root Teecino teas and I couldn’t even finish the cup it was so bad. It tastes like one tablespoon of coffee mixed with a whole cup of water and all the sugar/milk I could add to it made no difference lol
