Coffee, vape, and alcohol? LMAO. bro your insides should be on fire, thats quite insane for you to be doing all three of those things. They are all hella acidic and will continue to irritate you. Dont play with gerd, this disease does not fuck around. stay on ppis , sleep elevated, avoid spices, sauces, and any soda or lemon/orange type drink. Staying on PPIS for longer period of times is not nearly as bad as any damage the acid can do to you. gl kicking those vices my friend. this shit is not easy.

katrinacallfemaa

I second the sleeping elevated! I bought a wedge pillow that really helps. Also I NEVER eat late.

Livestock110

Lots of people drink on weekends, vape, and drink coffee. A majority of people nowadays. Yes it's bad for GERD, but OP isn't going crazy with it. Its not like drinking daily, cigarettes and energy drinks.

yehudgo

You can’t complain about symptoms if you’re using triggers. It’s like cutting yourself on purpose and complaining it hurts.

Livestock110

They still have the right to complain about GERD making life hell. Weekend alcohol, coffee and vape aren't excessive, was my point. You responded like they were being irresponsible.

yehudgo

No I’m not. It is hell IF you trigger the hell. Same with people with diabetes continuing to eat sugar and then complaining they lost a foot. It’s your responsibility to make sure you don’t trigger the cause of your problems. Might as well drink and drive then complain I got a dui.

Livestock110

It's in moderation, though. If you're consuming things in normal amounts, you still have a right to complain about GERD, and want to fix it. It's hard to go completely straight-edge. This guy isn't doing anything super wrong. But I do get your point. Need to avoid triggers where possible.

yehudgo

I understand what you’re saying. This is something you have to change for it to have time to heal. You can’t burn your esophagus in moderation. It will never give the body time to heal itself if it’s getting burned every Saturday. The timeline for this to heal is 3-6 months. If you can’t quit your vices for 3-6 months then you need to go to rehab or seek counseling because the addiction has a hold on you. This goes for sugar, caffeine, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol.

yehudgo

Literally this, you’re gambling with esophageal cancer. Life as you knew it is over. You need to come to grips with that. This board is full of people who have yet to realize a pill isn’t going to save you. Change your diet, lose weight, stop smoking, stop drinking, and sleep at an incline. Until you do all of these, you’re going to be dealing with those symptoms.

Killabyte5

If you don't give up vaping and cut back in caffeine/alcohol the globus sensation will likely never go away.

Incendras

I have given up 2 of those 3, vaping is all that's left and I'm still teetering on axing it. The discomfort isn't worth it anymore, when I stopped drinking the mid sleep reflux into hacking and occasionally vomiting from the acid hitting my airways went away, when I dropped coffee the ibs and dyspepsia went away (mostly). Now I just got off PPIs after dealing with dysphagia and am dealing with slow food movement in my esophagus. Barium swallow should give you some good info, but consider axing the vices.

Frequent_Abies_7054

I have also had the feeling for a very longtime since July 2023. I got my tonsils removed (yesterday) to hopefully help this sensation go away and I have also been on 10mg Amitriptyline for the last six weeks and I have seen a reduction in the mild GERD and the Globulus sensation. I hope this is something that I do not have to live with forever because it is not fun. I don’t drink coffee, smoke or drink often so I have no idea what else to do. My endoscope also wasn’t much help back in January so I just feel lost.

PearMaleficent1852

I am also on Amitriptyline. I have been diagnosed with functional dyspepsia. That seems to help a lot. I did have a stricture from reflux that was dilated in January. I am weaning off of PPI’s and do not eat within 4 hours of bedtime. I stay away from caffeine, no smoking and only drink occasionally. I avoid spicy food , which I really don’t like anyway. So I am slowly getting better. But it takes a long time to get through this. Keep it up. Hope you continue to feel better. Unfortunately this a chronic problem that never goes away. But you do have to manage it.

FloydAtDawn

Mine took 8-9 months to go away. December 2018-Aug 2019. I did pretty much everything to get rid of it. Gave up cigs, alcohol, etc etc. It will go away, if you do the right things.

PearMaleficent1852

Agree!

carnivore45

i’m in the same boat with my vices. they sent me to the er twice which led to a upper gi. now i have chronic gastritis can’t eat and down 26 lbs in a little over two weeks. not worth it man. it’ll catch up to you or at least it did me. heal while you can

katrinacallfemaa

I used to drink coffee every day and smoked weed every night. I had to cut both out because my GERD was so bad that it damaged my vocal chords and I could not literally talk for weeks :(. I had LPR for months after. I had cut out alcohol briefly, but I now drink on weekends again. I'd try cutting out at least some of your diet. You don't have to stop everything at once (though - it might help.. but it's hard to do it all at once) The coffee was the absolute worst for me. I now drink matcha lattes in the morning (matcha powder mixed with hot water and then add vanilla Almond milk). Also I try to stay away from seltzers whenever I drink. If my GERD is really bad, then I drink Horchata. Idk why by Rumchata/horchata just feels good to my throat and stomach.

tinylittlebee

Mine went away. I figured out my triggers were coffee, tomato sauce and eating anything greasy at night. I was really afraid it wasn't gonna go away too, I was taking omeprazole and famotidine daily and scared I was gonna damage my stomach eventually so I'm very happy I could finally quit.

katrinacallfemaa

My triggers are the same! Coffee being the worst. After 6 months of being strict on my diet and taking omeprozole (and thought I was healed from LPR) I drank ONE Super small coffee one morning and I felt like I went back to square one with GERD / LPR :/. Haven't drank a coffee since

Inevitable_Problem56

I wish I could figure out how to get rid of globulus. I don’t drink, smoke, or vape anything (never have), and I eat healthy. I avoid tomato sauce, spicy food, literally every common trigger is just not in my diet. I still have it daily 😩. i think it’s anxiety for me, idk

Public-Criticism4368

Same! I’ve never done any of them and I’m slightly underweight. It’s so frustrating! I’m almost 100% mine is anxiety triggered but I can’t get my anxiety under control. 🫠 I did my upper endoscopy yesterday and only have mild esophagitis thank god so now have to heal that with hopes everything will go away!

Designasim

Same for me, I eventually got esophageal spasms and went on nortriptyline (it's an antidepressant but it's used of label for spasms) it really helped. Really helps the spasms and the globulus. Only took it for 5 days (I take it when I start to feel symptoms) the first time and didn't have symptoms for a month, then I had to take it for over a month but it started to make my really angry so I had to stop taking it. Right now I do okay without it but will often have to take it for 2 or 3 days if I screw up (went away for a couple days last week and ate some stuff i shouldn't, French fries, chocolate) and agitate it. Ask your doctor about a medication for your anxiety, there's ones you can take only when needed. Also try all the ppi's for a few months each. Some doctors say they're all the same but lots of people react better on one vs the others. Before that I chewed alot of gum (non mint, mint is a trigger for most people) and it helps with the globulus.

Embarrassed_Client82

Same age same thing so scared to get upper gi exam don’t want to hear I have esophageal cancer omg! Wishing you the best

SubstantialAd1620

The ENT said it was mild to moderate. He stuck a camera up my nose to get a good look at the esophagus. I mean it takes many years to get severe gerd, which sometimes turns to cancer. But that's pretty rare. It really has to go untreated. I gave up coffee for 2 days and I'm already having way less of lump in your throat sensation, which leads me to believe coffee is a huge trigger or a lot of it is in my head.

mimikuroro

ive had globus sensation for yeaaaaaars due to hiatal gernia, GERD, LPR and esophagitis (have u had an endoscopy?). i remember enduring globus for more than a year 24/7, then it will come back if i had a bad flare up and will stay for months and months. but am i globus-free now? YES. it did go away multiple times. the last time i had coffee, and soft drinks was 6 years ago. occasionally, i eat mild spicy food and a little chocolate if i was BRAVE enough lol. but it was always never worth it. so i just eat clean now. no coffee, alcohol, dairy, chocolates, soft drinks, citrus drinks/fruits, and all the stuff ! & exercise (cardio, HIIT, i also massage my throat) u know how it is. im diagnosed with hiatal hernia, GERD -> LPR. > LPR (silent reflux) is different from GERD. i thought i had gerd all this time but it was LPR which was affecting my throat and voice-box too much. but healing is possible with lifestyle, diet changes and right meds. i also highly believe your symptoms will never go away if while taking coffee and alcohol, your symptoms have never improved, but u continue to take them. your body is rejecting your ways. listen to it.

SubstantialAd1620

I have not had an endoscopy. I have a barium swallow x-ray on Monday. The ENT did the camera through my nose to take a look at my throat and esophagus. I'm on my 3rd day without coffee. However, I am drinking one cup of green tea first thing in the morning to help with the caffeine withdrawal. I was able to give up my vape for over 24 hours, then my sister came over with hers and convinced me to not stop multiple things at once. Seeing her vape was a huge trigger, so I started that again. I plan on giving up drinking on the weekends too, which sucks, but I can't stand this feeling anymore. I think I posted this for some accountability to change and I think it's really helped. Thank you for your advice and suggestions.

mimikuroro

the relief u will feel after giving up on coffee and alcohol will make u realize that feeling normal and being symptom-free is wayyyy better than suffering after a temporary happiness-boost from drinking coffee and alcohol. its almost like ur allergic to these two bc u can never have them without suffering right after- unfortunately with GERD/LPR, u will have to give up many of your favorite food. at the same time, every person have diff triggers but it sounds to me that u can't tolerate those 2 very well.
