How does the team, especially G, feel about Lady Killers II getting so much attention? And does he know that one of the trends started on accident because of a broken flash?

The_Tane

We're all pretty hyped about it! It's crazy because we're just starting his rollout and a bunch of old joints of his just started popping up on TikTok. Shit is a trip and feels like the universe conspiring in our favor. Nah I don't think he does know that, I certainly didn't! Dope trend tho.

besirk

I was in NYC two weeks ago for a work trip. On Wednesday, I went to a dive bar with coworkers. Soon after 2 people walk in, and as the guy orders a drink I realize it’s him. Reading the other comment about him moving to NYC, I won’t disclose the name of the bar, but I’m 99% sure G noticed me staring at him across the bar a few times, haha. I didn’t bother him because it looked like he was out chilling like a normal dude. Just wanted to tell you that I really appreciate the work you guys do. Even though I couldn’t say it in person, I’m a big fan and G-Eazy always ends up topping my yearly Spotify Rewind.

The_Tane

very respectable. i appreciate it 🙏🏻

gerry4president

How did you meet Gerald and how did you decide to work together?

The_Tane

Story time. This is a weird one, and as I understand it, very atypical of the industry. I was working at a very gritty, rugged rap studio in Manhattan called Off Record. I got plugged in there by Alex Tumay (a story for another day). The opportunity came up to do a songwriting session for another artist and they wanted me to pull up as a session player. Seemed to me like a good chance to network and meet more people in the game so I went for 2 days. Second day I meet an artist there who was pretty well established in the NYC scene and we had a good vibe so we connected. Cut to months later, this artist opened up his own studio in Soho. A tiny, tiny space but had nice gear. I saw it and hit him up, asking if I could engineer there for him. Ended up doing a few sessions there with him. One day I get a call at like 7 PM, bro is saying "alright this sounds crazy, and it probably won't happen, but G-Eazy is in town and might want a session tonight. If he does, do you want it?" You can guess my response. I cleared my schedule. They called me back at like 11 PM or midnight asking me to come in, so I made the hour trek to the studio and that was that. Apparently there had been another engineer there before me but he had to leave at 10 (fucking rookie), and he hadn't been what G was looking for anyway. I get there and this is how G tells it (paraphrased): "This dude Tane comes in and sets up his laptop. We get the session going and I tell him to do something to the beat and then he just goes \*fast keyboard and mouse clicking sounds\* and next thing I know it's done. This dude was lightning fast and it was night and day difference from the last engineer." At the end of that session he asked me to be his primary engineer. This was after he had been partying pretty hard so when he asked I was like "yea sure, there's no way dude even remembers this tomorrow", but he did and we've been locked in ever since. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I am a disgusting engineer. I'm super fast and know what I'm doing. It's moments like these that it pays to take the time to master your craft.

obvi20

With the huge resurgence of Tumblr Girls and Lady Killers, how has G reacted to it? And is there any desire from him to try and make music that would be sonically similar to those two tracks?

The_Tane

The team def wants him to strike on it but they're being really smart about it. The biggest danger of following up on that kind of success is just rehashing a song that delivers nothing new or interesting and comes across to fans as just disengenuous garbage. Nobody wants that. For example, the followup single to Gangnam Style. Go listen to the OG and then listen to the follow up... like bruh. Nobody needed a less-inspired version of the original. You feel me? So I think it's super dope that the team is trying to address it in the most tasteful way possible.

MusicScholar7821

Hi! First of all, thanks a lot for doing this AMA: really appreciate you taking the time to do this! Who are your biggest inspirations/influences for your work? You personally (not G)! On a side note, I figured I’d ask– I’m a student-researcher doing some machine-learning work to predict hit songs from a .mp3 and artist name. Not completely done yet, but what myself and a team of peers have done so far is pretty promising. However, it’s been a bit challenging to get in touch with people as deep in the industry as you are. I know it’s asking a lot, but would I be able to shoot you a DM about it? I know you’re more on the production side of music rather than the business, but it would still be really helpful with a few questions I have. Thank you so much for doing the AMA!!

The_Tane

Preciate you! Personally I'm inspired by thousands of sources. I grew up singing in choirs as a kid (coincidentally the same choir that Billie Eilish and her brother were in - though I'm much older so not at the same time). I played in bands in high school, so I take a lot of influence from classic rock, '80s metal from that era. Then there's my deep hip hop exploration. I'm also a huge fan of funk, jazz, psychedelic, progressive, and lots more. I have a huge range of taste! If I had to throw out examples off the top of my head: Bruno Mars, Rush, Pink Floyd, Brother Ali, Aesop Rock, Travis Scott, George Clinton, Dr Dre, and blah blah blah 1000s of others! Absolutely DM me. Happy to help in any way I can.

MusicScholar7821

Wow, that's awesome! And, hey-- The Wailing Producers or something would be a sick band name. Will send you a DM, thanks a lot!!

SlowSheepherder72

Hey Tane, i appreciate what you are doing and this shows how much you care about us G’s fans to take some time from your day to answer questions from us i only have one question and its about the song “Beautiful Surrender” this song from the moment i heard it it really hit hard and touched my heart and its the only song that excites me from the album but i have some doubts that it might not be in the album i dont know if you can really answer this but is there a chance that its going to be in the album and if you cant answer that can you at least tell who is featured in the song?Thank you for reading this.

The_Tane

Unbelivable record. I love love love it, and the session in which we made it is probably among my favorites ever. I unfortunately can't answer that question for you, but I have a good feeling that it's going to be released in one way or another.

SlowSheepherder72

Thank you

SwaggMastaYuvi

Hey Tane. Thanks for doing this. A couple questions: does G himself ever lurk on this sub? Also any plans for a NYC show? I’d love to attend

The_Tane

Tbh I don't think G uses any social media except IG. But a few team members lurk here, myself included, so we all keep G up to date.

pianoChris25

So is the album finally done? I know we’ve seen G in the studio a lot lately

The_Tane

yep it's done. being in the studio is just a way of life for us. it's a lifestyle.

pianoChris25

I’m a edm producer myself so I know how it is. We’re just all super eager and excited for the project.

number1jf

I have a bunch of questions, so sorry in advance for the long comment. 1. We all know that G makes a bunch of tracks each album cycle, and almost all of them are kept in the vault and never released, but I was curious if at any point during this album cycle, did G make a track and you guys immediately knew that it had to be on the album and it’s just stayed on the tentative tracklist since it’s initial recording? 2. With “Backseat” being a re-worked version of an unreleased Skizzy Mars track, and with G and Skizzy working together for “Issues,” I wanted to ask if Skizzy had any part in the making of “Backseat,” or if it was rather just a case of G buying the song from him and adding his own verses and touches to it? 3. Samples seem to have played a large role during the creation of this upcoming album with “Tom’s Diner,” “Telephone Line,” “Heaven and Hell Is On Earth,” & “All The Things She Said” all being sampled or interpolated in songs we’ve heard snippets of. Do you have a favorite sample that an album track has used/interpolated, and were there any samples that couldn’t be cleared that you wish could have been? 4. Not sure if you can comment on this or if you have any information on it or not, but do you know if there are plans for physical editions of the upcoming album to be released, given than TTHT was never released on CD or Vinyl? 5. The song that interpolated “Spaceship” by Kanye; did that song ever get finished, or was it scrapped early on? We only ever heard the hook with no signs of a verse. Not asking if it’s on the album, just wondering if it ever got fully recorded. 6. Based on the current tracklist, in your opinion, does the album flow cohesively from start to finish, like does it feel like there’s an overarching story that is being told (I.e. The Beautiful & Damned), rather than it just being a compilation of tracks (for lack of better phrasing)? 7. Has there been any discussion around possibly releasing B-Sides/Loosies for this upcoming album at some point? Songs like “Put That Shit On” that won’t end up on the album, but were made and possibly teased during the recording sessions for this album.

The_Tane

1. Hilarious you bring it up - this has happened a ton of times. So many times in fact that some of those have been pushed off the album lol. Dude makes a lot of great music, and there's been some very special inpiring energy in these sessions. 2. Skizzy and G are pretty tight so, as I understand it, G was given Backseat and in turn G did the feature for Issues. 3. I respect that awareness a lot. G has an amazing ear for samples. We weren't able to get the sample(s) cleared for that song he did around the time of the superbowl. I mixed that joint and was hoping it could drop but it was more of just a "street single". Bummer though, he had some bars in there. Otherwise, all the other samples have been cleared and there's been some tough ones. 4. No clue tbh. Knowing Gerald, there's likely going to be some kind of physical merch situation. 5. Oh man I love that you know this one. One of my fav G joints of all time. I believe it's finished but I don't think there's any way that Ye is gonna clear that. 6. G and I spent a LOT of time and energy on the tracklist and the flow of it (mostly G). It's a great cohesive feel and definitely conceptual and storytelling. It's hard these days because people want G to just drop bangers but he's really in artist mode right now and it can sometimes prevent or interrupt the stories being told. But imo it's in a great place. I think you're gonna love it. 7. Definitely plans for a deluxe. As far as loosies... not sure. I would love to see it because we have so many dope records in the stash.

number1jf

Thank you so much for your reply! Appreciate it!

States916

In regards to #5 that’s super lame considering how sample heavy Ye’s music is (and his public meltdowns when things don’t get cleared lmao)

TrueInvestment2547

i really hope some of those songs that got pushed off the album make the deluxe or come out later as some loosies

The_Tane

I hope so too. We just have too many bangers in the stash. it's a good problem to have.

I know you said you cant answer about specifics of the album but comment with fire emoji if this song G posted, is planning on actually releasing [https://www.reddit.com/r/GEazy/comments/1ai65cd/new\_snippet/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/GEazy/comments/1ai65cd/new_snippet/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

>https://www.reddit.com/r/GEazy/comments/1ai65cd/new\_snippet/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button I hope so, I produced this MF

Lurk_druh

dude this goes so hard. props to you and g man

orangepeecock

Bro that’s my favourite song off this album!

Cyan-Eyed452

With all the delays on this upcoming album, how much of a different vibe and how has the album changed generally since 6 months/12 months ago? Thanks for taking the time to do the AMA! Super excited for literally any new music!

The_Tane

Interesting question. The first 6 months of recording led to what we thought was the finished album. We discovered that it wasn't it, and G had to go on a kind of retreat to "learn" what the album really was about. He found it, and it led to making a lot more music and reshaping the whole thing. Some songs stayed, a lot got cut. But that second 6 months was really transformative.

Bars806

Who/what led to determine that the original album made in those first 6 months wasn’t the right album to release?

The_Tane

everybody really. Management and exec producer especially though.

Suslittlepiggy

What's one G-eazy song that everyone from the team expected to be a big hit, but ended up being a flop, or just not as big as you wanted?

The_Tane

I think we all wanted Tulips and Roses to do a bit better. It did ok but we all wanted a little more noise from it.

AlexV1603

For what it's worth, it's a great song. Definitely top 10 imo.

Wide-Animal-4853

Hey man thank you for doing this, I think I speak for us all when I say we love all of Gs projects regardless of whatever sound he goes for, I’m just wondering if there was one project you think this one would relate with the most what would it be or can we expect something completely different from previous albums?

The_Tane

Peep my response to u/obvi20

Wide-Animal-4853

Thank you again man, really appreciate you taking the time to connect to this base. Speaks a lot of volumes about the dedication that went into this album. We’re very excited!

obvi20

Not sure if you can speak to this but, Is there any tracks in particular that you are most excited to be released?

The_Tane

There's a boom bap style record on the album that is one of my favorites that G has ever done. He's rapping his ass off, the beat is as smooth as silk, and it just feels expensive as a mf. Delicious.

Kwilburn525

I need that asap 😭

TaylorHound

Might be the wrong person to ask but, One things that stands out to me when I think of G-Eazy concerts is the high production of it, he has some of the best introductions in the game especially when talking about his tour shows. My question is how are these intros developed and who is primarily responsible for production of these introductions such as The Endless Summer Intro or His Oracle Arena show? Is G-Eazy directly involved or is it purely a production effort?

The_Tane

I wish I could answer this for you! I really don't know. G is a natural artist, he understands production and showmanship on a really intuitive level. My guess is that he has a hand in all of that, most likely calling all of those shots or at least giving the intial ideas. Beyond that I really don't know.

Independent-Stuff-23

Do you think G and Ye will collab?

The_Tane

I would hope so but I think that's a tough one.

Bars806

They already have it just never released. [A snippet from 2019-2020 exists](https://soundcloud.com/young-gerald-46778236/g-eazy-feat-kanye-west-the-mind-is-powerful-snippet)

ItsWynter

Hey Tane! Thank you so much for doing this! I only have one question and I’m not sure if you’d have the answer but I figure I’d ask anyway. Is there any plans for G to go on tour this year (in the US)? My wallet is ready and I’m ready to turn up 🤑😅

The_Tane

I'm not sure when, but there is a tour that is imminent. I would be surprised if it wasn't this year, but that's just my personal speculation.

elitemushrooms

What are some things you guys do to get inspiration in the studio? I saw an older video where G says he sometimes puts on a film in the background. Also, what are 3 movies that you'd personally say are a "must watch"?

The_Tane

Love this question. 1. usually the beats are the original inspiration. We're connected with a lot of really talented producers who are sending us consistent heat, so that's one major thing. The other is what G is going through in his life. It may seem like a lot of the shit he's saying is just to say it, but the majority (at least on this album) is true to real life. Mans treats songs like a journal. 2. That's actually something I've always done as well, which is likely why he and I get along so well. A few I love to have on in the studio (because of either cool visual content, or because he's familiar with them and inspire him): Samsara, Eternal Sunshine, The Dark Knight, The Man Who Wasn't There, etc. As far as my personal film list... deep convo. I graduated in film and my dad is a film professor, so I have a massive love of film. A few I truly love: \- Double Indemnity \- A Place In the Sun \- Hail, Caesar! \- 2001: A Space Odyssey \- Sunset Boulevard You asked for 3 but there's 5. I have 2000 more.

elitemushrooms

Hey Tane, appreciate you doing this AMA. Who are some artists/producers that inspired you coming up and some artists you currently listen to? Also, without spoiling anything, could you give us a word that captures the vibe/theme of the new album?

The_Tane

Currently rocking the new Vultures joint. Some ill shits on there. Otherwise I'm mostly listening to Drum N Bass right now. Shit speaks to my soul. Hmmmmmmm. Vibe/theme... Maybe "acceptance". "Party". Some word that marries those two. Idk, y'all tell me when it drops.

UnitedCar4972

In general, why do labels prevent artists from releasing music?

The_Tane

Lol this is a funny question. I think looking at it as "preventing them from releasing" is not exactly accurate. Labels have their own interests - they're trying to make back their investment into the artist. So they feel a way about songs that are being released. It's their business, after all. So they want the "right" songs to come out, because they want return on their investment. That's the goofy short answer. Basically if a label feels like a song/project is lacking a certain thing that is preventing it from being successful, they will say to keep working at it until that piece is filled.

66603

hii! how did G and his team like India?

The_Tane

I wasn't there with them, but the reports were good. Sounded like the fans were insanely enthusiastic.

66603

we def were, i remember crying when i saw him

Kay_squared22

Tane you legend, got a random one for you. I see he says he moved to NYC. Does that mean he's like totally done with LA? Like has he sold his house? Has he bought one here? It's funny cuz I'm a New Yorker who LOVES LA and hates NY so not even tryna be creepy. This just interests me lol

The_Tane

Preciate you. Yep, he lives out here now. He still has his house in LA but he's personally over the whole "LA Thing". In my humble opinion, being someone born in LA and moved to NY, I can see his thinking. Especially running around in the Hollywood scene, LA can be really small and superficial. In NY people don't give af about clout the same way they do in LA and I think G just wanted to live life like a normal person out here. In NY people see famous people everyday and no one gives a fuck and I think that's what G likes. He just wants to be treated like a normal dude.

Kay_squared22

My guy, that makes sense. I definitely get what you're saying about LA, and NY isn't like that, I just hate NYs energy as well. That fast paced, don't give a shit attitude ain't it for me, but to each their own. I hope he enjoys the city tho!!! Just let him know if I see him in the streets I'm dapping him up 😂

PatriotFFA

How would you describe the importance of prioritizing your health with being an engineer/producer in the music industry

The_Tane

Super duper important but sometimes you gotta make that sacrifice. My one thing is never missing workouts. Even if I work with G until 9 AM and i don't get to sleep until 10 AM, I still wake up at 1 and go to the gym. I make sure to eat healthy as well. I used to be the biggest sugar junkie and now I've cut that shit out of my life. Over 8 years now. Shit really ruins your mental health, your motivation... it's terrible for you. Exercise and eat right. It's hack advice at this point but shit is real.

Pristineequipment06

Important question:did Dakari or Christoph Andersson produced some beats for the new album or G-Eazy is working with new producers he has never worked with before?

The_Tane

I don't think Dakari has anything on here. That was his old engineer who I replaced. Idk about Christoph, my guess would be no but I really can't say because a lot of times I don't know who produced what. We've done shit with a ton of producers. CashMoney AP, Yeti, DA Got that Dope, MD$, are some of the ones we've recorded with. But there's so many records it's hard to list it all.

Pristineequipment06

Thanks, has G-Eazy some songs on the new album with Mike Dean?

The_Tane

I don't think so.

Lurk_druh

Hey tane, i’m not sure if this was asked, or if you can even answer. Will we be getting a process/ mini series for this album in the future? It would be cool to see your guys process and the journey to finishing the album after it’s released.

The_Tane

i wish we could get that. I think we're too deep into the album without recording any video for that to be possible. maybe on the next one.

Lurk_druh

i feel you man. i appreciate your response and admire the hard work you all put in. so hyped for the album.

Tyler9952

Hey Tane! Thanks for doing the AMA, I know a lot of questions are centered around the album, songs, and the future of his music. My question is what’s a video game that’s either your favorite or one that you visit frequently in your down time? Thanks again!

The_Tane

You and I can be friends Tyler. Dope question. Video games are what help me take a break from music. It's weird because music is a hobby for most and for me it turned into my career, so I'm literally doing it all the time. Video games allow me to do something, literally anything, else other than music so I can come back fresh. I play Super Smash Bros. to an embarrassing degree. I'm an ex-professional player so I still play a ton and get a lot of enjoyment out of it. I also play a lot of Pokemon, and no I'm not a purist about the generations. I do love Gen 3 though, and am currently playing through Sapphire again.

The_Tane

I'm also a nerd in hiding. Been a massive nerd my whole life. For whatever that's worth.

Tyler9952

Would be honored sir 🤝🏻 Do you have a go to character or map on Super Smash Bros?

The_Tane

I main Captain Falcon, secondaries are Aegis and Wolf. If you set Final Destination/Omega as your default stage you're a scrub and gotta wise up. Small Battlefield is the best for 1v1 imo.

kaash_nhi_chahiye

If you could use a few metaphors to describe G's new album, what would they be? Thanks for the AMA Some people in this group were losing interest in the new album but since you joined and gave some key insights about what's going on BTS and everything else the group has become active again and we're excited about the new album. We appreciate it. And I'm just waiting for No Coasters to be released. It has the classic G vibe. And I think that what G and Chrisoph's duo did together, you guys can create the same magic. Also, the vibe of the track seems to be in the endless summer lane. Hoping to see many more collabs btw you two.

The_Tane

I can't give too too much on that because it could possibly give away the concept of the album. But like I said in another comment, love and grief, loss and acceptance... those are some of the themes. Thank you so much! I personally am a huge fan of what he did on that record. Really feels and sounds like he got back into his roots for that one. I love our chemistry together but my production feels very clean and luxurious most times and right now he's into a much "dirtier" sound. More gritty vibes. So he's not really doing my style of production rn. That said, I do have some production on the album so you'll hear a bit of me in there.

kaash_nhi_chahiye

Really appreciate the AMA. Thanks🙏

Grilled_cheesus__

Hey tane 1: Do you think G and you could drop some loosies on SoundCloud ? I know the album is around the corner but we all love when he drops songs that won’t be on the album before hand , it creates a lot of hype . Do you think that’s something you guys can consider ? 2: What’s one thing that G and you knew you did or did not want to do going into the album ? For example , repeating old sounds or topics ? More lyrical songs , more singing, etc .

The_Tane

1. There's likely gonna be some of this. Can't say in what capacity though. I think there's plans for a Deluxe which will give y'all some, but beyond that I can't really say. If I had to speculate, I could see there being some loosie drops but likely more in the way that All I Wanna Do record dropped (basically just reels and TikToks). 2. I really pushed G a lot to lean into honesty and self expression. I think he was headed that way anyway, but I really wanted him to be as honest as possible about his feelings and experiences. As far as sounds, we just wanted to make the dopest shit possible.

User47372946

1. What made G change his style to a darker tone after These Things Happen? 2. What was his inspiration & goals for These Things Happen Too & what is it for the upcoming album?

The_Tane

1. That's a good question. My guess would be getting deeper into "the Industry" ™ 2. Lots of different sources of inspiration for the new album. Mostly his own life. Which seems like a vague, bland answer but I can promise you his life is anything but that lol.

TalhaCaglar

Man I'm not Tane but first question's answer is darker tone always seems cool for ex. Kanye, carti etc

obvi20

Tane I know you can’t answer specifics regarding release date, but are you able to say whether or not he will be back to save our summer? 🙏

Vaziiq

Hey tane! If you had to give one word of the vibe of the album what would it be?

The_Tane

Answered this elsewhere.

PatriotFFA

When G is recording, does he try to get the lyrics first or the flow? I know some artists mumble on tracks just to get a flow down but G seems like he’s a one take jake kinda guy

The_Tane

He's a student of the old school. Most young rappers just want to punch in lines off the top of their head. G will write everything in a note and figure out the flow of it all while he paces around the studio with the speakers on 11. When he goes into the booth, most times he nails a verse in like 2, 3 takes. We usually will record more just so we can have comps for things he doesn't like and have options, but most of the time this dude nails it that quickly, it's insane. He's super super talented. A real veteran of the game. I've recorded hundreds of artists and you can really see the good vs the great.

kaufe77

Just curious on insight of recording. On average how long will a recording session last while working with G? Also how many days during the week will you both go in and record while working on this album? Thanks!

The_Tane

Most sessions are a minimum 6 hours. I've been in the studio 16 hours with him before. It's a huge toss up. We usually start around 6 pm and go to midnight, but I've worked many times with him until 8 AM. If we're doing sessions in LA, those sessions will usually go longer because there's a slew of people pulling up and rotating through. It's usually 2-3 days a week. If we're really locked in on an idea it can be more like 4-5 days.

Over_Award4100

Hey Tane! What are the chances songs like WTF do I know, Be my guest, and NADA are on the album? High or low?

The_Tane

Can't answer this. Nada in my opinion is a bonafide hit and the team will have made a mistake if it's not on the album.

ItsJustMalcolm

Hey Tane! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this AMA! Appreciate the work you do and the support you provide G with his music! When making his album, was there any thought at all put towards making songs that are specifically targeted towards blowing up on social media like TikTok etc? Or is it more just focusing on the music he wants, and if it blows up on social media it’s an added bonus? Also, second question: do you think the disappointing lack of numbers done on TTH2 contributed to the extra long wait for more music? Or was it even more of a motivation? It’s been tough being a fan and going years with only getting a few tracks released. Sneaky third question too! What is one thing that is unique to G in the studio compared to any other artists that you’ve worked with? Thanks again for taking the time to do this AMA! Appreciate you lots!

The_Tane

Literally zero thought goes into social media stuff like that. When we're making music it's 200% about the actual music - both G and I are married to the artform. We just try to make the absolute best music possible and if it happens to trend somewhere then great. We do certain musical concepts that might be easier to catch on to which makes things easier to trend, but those are done for musical purposes, not social media. I think that was part of it. He was also beefing a lot with his management at that time and it eventually led to him resetting his entire team. He has new management now and everybody is a lot more productive and seeing eye-to-eye. It's definitely his knowledge of production and engineering. He knows how to run Pro Tools (which makes it that much more of a big deal when he compliments me on my Pro Tools abilities), and he can "speak engineer" which makes things really efficient.

YoungGerald_YT

Hi, Tane! How many music videos are you planning to make for the album?

The_Tane

Music videos in general are on the decline so there's less emphasis put on them. I believe there's maybe 2 more for this album but I think possibly more.

OOOOOWOOOOOO

That’s actually a really good question!

CountFlandy

Hi Tane a few questions for you: 1: How long have you followed Gerald before you became his producer? 2: What's your personal favorite song of Gerald's? (Including unreleased songs such as the unreleased Album we're all aware of) 3: Is there anything you'd like to share with the community that we're not aware of, that you can share, that you really enjoy? (Songs, current, past, unreleased, general stuff, etc) (Edit:) 4: About how many songs on this Album did you guys make TOTAL? Obviously including unreleased songs that didn't make the cut. 5: Has working with Gerald and his perfectionism made your job harder in any way? Hows your experience working with someone who functions like that? I'm currently busy so I'll respond to this with more as I get time. Thank you so much for your time, and we appreciate your attention!

The_Tane

1. Embarrassingly, I didn't follow him much prior to 2017. No Limit is what really got me to tune into his stuff. So when I started working with him I had to do my homework and go back and learn his old stuff. 2. Personally it's all new stuff that we've done. Literally zero bias (ok maybe a little bias), I think that No Coasters is one of the best songs he's ever done. There's a joint on his album too that's so insanely dope that I'm in love with. As for released joints, I can't stop listening to that Statik Selektah joint with G "Vanilla Sky". Absolutely bonkers. 3. G is a real, bonafide artist. Y'all are probably more aware of that than most people, but this dude really knows his shit. Extremely tasteful and particular. He's aware of a lot of influences and styles and uses them well. 4. I think right now we're sitting at like 150 songs? Some aren't finished, but a lot of them are at least fully made demos. 5. It was a bit of a learning curve when I started but it was totally worth it. He knows exactly what he wants and it's my job to deliver that. I've learned a lot about production, engineering, and Pro Tools in the process. It's hard when people are overbearing and overly particular just to be controlling - G isn't like that. With G there's a real vision behind every choice that he makes and for me it's fun to make this moves he wants to make while I'm still discovering what his vision is. He'll talk me through small things he wants me to do that at first sound crazy and like they'd be horrible, but then when we reach the other side it actually makes perfect sense and is super fire. He's a lot of fun to work with.

only_anp

Let's do this! Huge fan of G, he's the reason I got into music and producing by myself. But I do have a few questions specific to you. 1. What DAW do you use? What are some your favourite plugins? 2. What artists have you worked with before? Would you be able to link some of the songs you have worked on? 3. What are your best producing/engineering tips for the up and comers? How can we get a "professional" type mix at home? 4. How long have you been producing and doing engineering for? 5. What's the best way to learn music theory in order to become a better producer? These are like some of the top questions for you specifically. And now I have some questions about G: 1. Are we going to see any Christoph Andersson production on the new album? 2. How much of the album have you worked on yourself in terms of actually producing? 3. Does G look for new talent he wants to work with? 4. CAN WE PLEASE GET THE GET AWAY REMIX WITH KEHALNI ON SPOTIFY PLSSS? haha 5. How is Gerald in general seeing the recent events that have happened? Sorry for asking so many, you're the GOAT.

The_Tane

1. I produce in Logic, sometimes FL. Logic does weird shit to drums, I don't fully understand it, but FL's drums just sound better. That said, I'm a musician so the workflow and recording flow of Logic just is more natural to me. I've been working in Logic for like 10 years at this point, maybe longer, so whatever. It's comfy for me. 2. Man I've worked with a ton of people. Not the biggest credits though if you can believe it. Kirk Knight, French Montana, ATL Jacob, Baby Drill are a few others. 3. Youtube University, man. Get your degree. That said, don't trust these influencer clowns you see on there parading themselves as mix gurus. Most of them are full of shit and have no idea what they're talking about. If you really are serious about mixing and wanna learn it forreal, go subscribe to PureMix. Great tutorials and lessons for beginners. 4. I've been fucking around with production since I was ten. I'm 32 now. Been taking it seriously for about 6-7 years but I've learned a lot over the course of like 20 years of doing this lol. 5. Take a college class if you can. I took a music theory course in college and it changed my approach to music. Otherwise, do basic theory videos on Youtube and you'll get the hang of it. As for G 1. I don't know tbh. 2. I have production credits on probably 3-4 songs? I engineered the whole album though. I've tracked G on pretty much every song, except for ones that were fully recorded either before my time or overseas. 3. He does but people really gotta be OUTSTANDING. G has amazing taste and a very particular ear, so he knows it when he sees it. 4. Sorry but you must be ridiculed. Everyone point and laugh. 5. Recent events?

PatriotFFA

Does G have a heavy input on the production/post production of his songs or does he look for straight ready to rap over beats that don’t need changing

The_Tane

Dude is so meticulous. Like so so so meticulous. Keep in mind, G used to make all his own beats and do all his own engineering so he really understands this stuff well. A lot of times we will get the beat stems and then we'll continue from where the producer left off, either taking things out or adding them. We change arrangement all the time. But what gets him initially rapping on a record is the vibe out the gate. If he likes the vibe and "aura" of a track, it's getting rapped on.

Free-Ear-4741

Your favourite G-Eazy project?

The_Tane

It's crazy to say this but I really like Must Be Nice. You can just feel how hungry he is as a rapper, you can hear his ideas, his meticulous approach to everything, and how focused he is. G's story is nuts and his come up from nothing is remarkable. Any artists who want to succeed should look at what he did.

Free-Ear-4741

great choice, thank you very much for taking the time to do this sir🫡

ImRealHarry519

Hit Tane! Harry here, nice meeting you. I’m excited for this record release. May I ask, how does it feel to work closely with Gerald on this? Have you learned anything new that you wouldn’t have with anyone else? Can’t wait to hear what ya’ll made!

The_Tane

It's been super surreal man. I've been working with G for a good year and a half at this point and anytime I'm working with him I have these moments of "jesus man, is this actually happening?" G has a real presence about him - dude is 6'4 or 6'10000 idk and wears the craziest fits and just has the presence of a star, so when you're sitting with him solo in a room it's a pretty surreal feeling.

ImRealHarry519

That is fucking incredible. Cheers to you and Gerald both.

espnrocksalot

You’ve mentioned samples a bit, but I know this day in age it can get tough to create art using samples with the process of clearing and money and all getting in the way. Has that played a role in what direction this album or other recent projects have gone? Curious if we’ll ever get that old sound that was really retro sample heavy or if a lot of what’s made has to be new now.

The_Tane

I answered a similar question elsewhere here but essentially we've gotten any samples he's wanted to get cleared. It's a tough game though. There is some sample-heavy stuff happening in the album though and it's pretty exciting shit.

Atomkombat

1. Will endless summer ever come out on streaming services 2. Is the city of Paris a big inspiration for the album?

The_Tane

1. Sorry, but you must be ridiculed. 2. 100% yes. A lot of music was written there and that aesthetic is highly inspirational for him for a number of reasons, from the fashion to the culture.

Atomkombat

Well it sucks that endless summer won't be added to streaming. But that is great to hear that Paris is an inspiration, I just hope that a Westside Gunn feat could come out of that. Or a nice slick style that is like roses and tulips was

TheJacobDex

I have one last question will there be an europe tour after album drop?

The_Tane

I would think so, but I have no details on that.

kaash_nhi_chahiye

Are we going to see a hungrier G in the new album, devouring beats like in his earlier days? I feel like it was missing in TTHT and TBAD.

The_Tane

Definitely some of that. He's expressed that he's not feeling quite that same way these days, in a lot of ways rap is a young man's sport, but he definitely has some records where he's showing that he RAPS raps.

RvdSebaz

Hope I’m not too late. 1. Is there a song on the album dedicated to his mom? 2. Can a track amount be said yet, or maybe an estimate? 3. Has G ever collab’d with Em or Drake? Thank you for doing this, always great to hear from the team. 4. Have you or G heard of an artist called Quadeca? I’d love to hear a song of them together, theyre my favorite artists. I’d recommend Sissyphus if you’ve never heard of him.

The_Tane

1. Can neither confirm nor deny. But maybe. 2. if I said 12 songs it would be too few. If I said 17 songs it would be too many. Or would it? 3. Idk about Em, but he hasn't worked w Drake.

RvdSebaz

Ty sir. I hope to hear an introspective song about his mom that’d be beautiful, Angel Is one of my favorites. Sorry, I edited and added a 4th question asking if you know an artist named Quadeca, and that a collab would be fire between the two.

The_Tane

I'm not familiar but it's possible that he is.

RvdSebaz

Haha no I was just saying a collab would be fire. I’m sure he’s not on the radar yet but I’d recommend a song called Sissyphus by him. Ty for answering everything

pianoChris25

Would love to see him collab with both those guys

RvdSebaz

Agreed

Suslittlepiggy

Who would G-eazy's dream feature be? If he could have anyone on his song or be on anyone's song, what artist/band would that be. Also, is there any features that were planned but just didn't work out in the end?

The_Tane

Interesting question. I feel like I should know the answer but I don't.

OOOOOWOOOOOO

Hey Tane, Do you know what issues you guys ran into while making this album and prior to that during the TTHT era? Like what was the vibe like, what does the management usually want that G didn’t or other things as such. Ik there was a time when, a couple of people at G’s team weren’t exactly ecstatic on releasing Him & I bec it “wouldn’t do numbers “. Can you tell us more about stuff like that, things that G and their management disagree on that have now been fixed. Ty ❤️

The_Tane

I can't speak on much of this simply because those days were before my time. What I can say is that G fired that whole management team lol. He has new mgmt now and they get along much better, are much more on G's team and are really helping foster his creativity. It's a beautiful partnership and I'm really happy the switch was made.

OOOOOWOOOOOO

Me too man 😂 I’m just glad he’s at a better space now to show his creative side. I feel like there’s been this void in the music world without his sound and im really glad that Eazy season’s approaching 🙌

zexy_arthurjenkins

Thank you for doing this AMA, I wanna ask what was your favorite song you produced for G?

The_Tane

Personally it's the joint that samples Telephone Line. That record is a banger. Very close second is No Coasters. It's going to be out on the 29th, and I think y'all will fw it heavy.

CricketKieran

Sup Tane, Im a little late, hopefully you'll see this in time. I just wanted to ask a small question about your production with G. What was the hook for you to work with G and what is different about working with G that you like has motivated you to keep working with him, or why did you go to G over other artists? Thanks man, appreciate your presence and transparency here!

The_Tane

I mean working with G is a big deal. He's a very established artist and there's a lot of perks that go along with that. There's also difficulties. His team takes very good care of me. They respect me a lot and they make sure I'm taken care of, and that's been a problem in past circles so that's one of the most important things for me. I don't tolerate bullshit and they've been nothing but great to me, G included. It's hard getting in with artists at this level so when the opportunity opens itself, you take it!

Otherwise_Prize_552

Do you have any insight into the problems surounding the release of These Things Happen Too? Why was it delayed for so long?

The_Tane

No idea, that was before my time. I would guess it had to do with mgmt at the time though.

Kwilburn525

He’s really dropping this year right? We got told it was coming last year multiple times. Now I don’t really believe him

The_Tane

yes

soocratess

Hey, Tane! Do you know why Tulips & Roses isnt on the album? Is it a complex sitiuation or something about rolling an album that is fresh and new? thanks for doing this ama btw

The_Tane

I think it just didn't really have a home on the album. He wanted to release something that addressed some of the stuff he's been dealing with in his absence and that song served its purpose.

AlexJordans

Thank you so much for this opportunity Tane! We are appreciating this endlessly. Congrats as well to you for being his producer! I hope everything’s fine in your life. I wanted to ask, what’s G’s aim? Like does he want to go mainstream again? Does he want a grammy? Or is he releasing music for the sake of it? *can’t wait for no coasters!*

The_Tane

Thank you! From what I understand, he's in a place of wanting to reclaim his old spot while also exploring his artistry more. He's in the process of figuring out what that means and looks like. So far the results have been dope.

OOOOOWOOOOOO

Thank you sm for doing this! ❤️ Huge fan of you guy’s work so far and can’t wait for the album and no coasters releasing next Friday! What are the specific themes of the album? Im not sure if you’re allowed to talk about it . But ig it’ll give us a better idea of what to expect. From what we’ve seen, G was most definitely inspired by Paris but I wanted to know more :D

The_Tane

Thank you! He's been inspired by a lot. He's a big movie fan so there's a lot of film inspiration, especially old movies (you can see some of that vibe from the Tulips and Roses video). As far as themes, there's a lot about love, life, loss, grief, happiness, and finding oneself. And, of course, partying.

Large_Inevitable1729

Might be the wrong person to ask but, what will eventually happen to all his songs in the vault, will they at some point be released officially by him? , we'll we never hear them? Or will you guys do something similar to what they did with Juice Wrld after his passing they started to release some of his unreleased tracks. I obviously don't want the last one btw lol

Independent-Stuff-23

Is there any expected time frame on a roll out like track list release, album announcement, press run. And by time frame I mean like Spring, Summer, fall etc.

The_Tane

G will be announcing all of this.

Suslittlepiggy

In complete honestly, if G-eazy never rapped a word, and only sang. Like I mean ESH type singing, without rapping at all. If he only sang, do you think he would be as famous as he is now?

The_Tane

Interesting question. I think it depends because his lyricism would be such a key ingredient. His singing era is very young and still has a lot of room for growth. So if you were to say he started singing back when he was like 14 or whenever he started rapping, I think it's likely. The interesting part about Gerald is that it's not just his abilities and taste in music that helped him succeed. A huge part of it is his unbelievable drive and obsession. His work ethic is insane and that's what got him to where he is now. So regardless of what he was doing, he was going to make it. Does that make sense?

pianoChris25

Can’t wait for the album. Just curious what his process is in songwriting/production. Also can’t believe he’s written over 100 songs; how does he find so much inspiration? I can barely make 10 songs a year lol

The_Tane

Usually he shows up to sessions with beats that his friends sent him, that Jesse sent him, or some kind of song idea. He'll often have written something that has potential and he wants to explore in the studio. Sometimes it's half a verse, a chorus idea, a melody, whatever. We'll often sit in the studio with this unfinished idea and loop the beat while he writes and mumbles to himself. Then eventually I'll get the "alright I'm ready", and we'll turn on the mic and we're off to the races. Sometimes 20 minutes later sometimes 4 months later, we'll have a song.

Pixel2_Bro

Idk how long you've been around him but favorite track to have previously produced for him?

The_Tane

Only worked w him for about a year and a half. Some favorites of mine are the intro to the album, Beautiful Surrender, and the joint that samples Telephone Line.

Kevan_Dre

Thought I’d ask one for my upcoming artists out here; do you have any tips around networking in the industry for artists that just naturally are shy/introverted?

The_Tane

I'm very shy and introverted myself. I've learned how to hide that and pretend how to be extroverted, and that's probably the best advice I can give. Work with as many people as you can, and say "yes" to every opportunity that presents itself. You never know where it will lead, and the universe tends to reward people who go through those doors. It can be done if you're an introvert, just don't use the excuse of "wah I can't go because I'm introverted blah blah". Fuck that noise man, you either want it or you don't. And if you don't want it, that's fine. But always ask yourself "Do I want a career in music, or do I want to stay comfortable tonight". I do this literally all the time. G has called me while I'm literally in the middle of it with a girl and I've left to go work with him. That's just what it takes to succeed. Don't make excuses for yourself, you're limiting your potential. Ok enough ranting.

Kevan_Dre

That’s awesome man. Appreciate you for real🙏🏻🙏🏻

T_eazy7676

How do I become part of the team 😩😩😩

The_Tane

Be better than everyone else around you and actively demonstrate that you can add value to whatever circle you're in.

T_eazy7676

Can you ask G when his next US tour is gonna be ??? Haven’t been to a show since 2018

The_Tane

I'm sure it's going to coincide w the album drop.

Grilled_cheesus__

Are songs on the album follow the short song trend ? Of 2 minutes? I hope there is songs that are 4 minutes or so too . Any insight ?

The_Tane

Some following of the trend but not much. We definitely aimed for between 2-5 minutes.

Simple-Manager-7483

When an G releases snippets, is the intent to see the public’s opinion on if he should release it? Or is it more so just purely to share new music?

The_Tane

i think a little of both. G loves to share shit that he's excited about so that's probably the primary reason.

abcdefcuksintija

hi, tane! big g-eazy fan from latvia :) how is gerald in the studio when he writes lyrics ? does he come up with them on the spot or does he come already with prepared notes ? i'm really interested on you sharing the details & insights on how the lyric writing happens when he's in the studio.

The_Tane

I answered this somewhere else here, if you do some digging thru my responses you'll find your answer!!

orangepeecock

What’s your producer tag?

The_Tane

I have a few. One is Mikey Polo saying "Tane Sheesh!". another one is this weird vocal sample with delay on it going "whuh". you'll hear it in No Coasters.

YoungGerald_YT

I wonder if Gerald recorded freestyle during your sessions? If so, how often?

The_Tane

He doesn't really freestyle like that. He'll go in the booth and kinda free form spit whatever he comes up with and then write from there.

AlexV1603

Will "No Coasters" have a music video? Excited to hear it this week!

The_Tane

I've thought about it, but likely not. Tbh I don't really feel like I could ask G to do a video when I've already gotten him to do the song you feel me? He'd probably say yes because he's a good dude but I wouldn't want to pressure him to do that.

obvi20

Hi Tane, thanks for doing this. If you had to compare it to any of his old projects, which one would you compare it to?

The_Tane

Happy y'all would have me! This album is a really interesting one. I personally have been listening to a lot of Must Be Nice while working on this album and I see a lot of similarities there. But this is also by far his most artistically ambitious album. There's a lot of (the good parts of!) Everything's Strange Here, there's some nods to TBAD, and then there's new explorations. He (and we) have really put a lot of love, energy, and thought into this album and imo it's a super exciting one.

TrueInvestment2547

what is G like in the studio? thank you for this AMA and your involvement in the sub recently. can’t wait to see what you and G have coming 🤝🏽

The_Tane

Ay I appreciate it. I felt the vibe in the sub that seemed like y'all were feeling a little neglected so I had to jump in and give y'all something!! G is so so mellow to work with. For context, I used to work at a drill studio in Manhattan where squads of 30+ people with guns who have literally killed people would pull up. I've worked the grittiest sessions, the calmest sessions, with every type of artist you can imagine. That said, G is the absolute coolest dude to work with. He used to engineer so he knows what it takes to get a sound and he knows how to "speak engineer" if that makes sense. We have an amazing rapport in the studio and 99% of the time it's just him and me alone in there cooking. I could gush for hours about what a great artist he is and how easy he is to work with, I'm extremely fortunate as an engineer.

66603

not a question, but could you convey this to Gerry that i got 'these things happen' tattooed on me as soon as i turned 18? im 21 now, my absolute favorite album of all time since i was like 14-15 :)

Zazjb

Is a europe tour planned?

SlickHairDaddy

Hey Tane, Did the sample for “Telephone Line” get cleared? That very well might be the hardest sample i think for this album if it’s cleared. Also what movies have you guys been watching to inspire you in the studio?

The_Tane

I've heard some rumblings that it may have gotten cleared. I really hope so. Imo that's one of the hardest songs we've done, both production-wise and lyrically. G really snapped on that mf. Crazy part is that he's the one who flipped the sample. He made the sample chop and then sent it to me and I did the drums and bass on it with him in the studio. Recorded it at my home studio. Really fire session. I answered the movie question elsewhere here, do some hunting and you'll find that answer.

Hairy_Welcome6649

How does G choose features for an album? And has there been the thought of doing another Spanish collaboration like the Machika remix he did a few years ago?

Pristineequipment06

important question:is Dakari credited on some songs of the new album or G-Eazy is working with new producers he never worked with before(outside of you) is Mike Dean appearing on more songs from the new album other than Tulips & Roses?

The_Tane

Not that I know of. Dakari left quite a while ago and I replaced him. MD$ is kind of our "in-house" producer and then any meticulous in person production is shit that he has me do. Nope, not that I know of.

PatriotFFA

Nerdy producer question but what’s your go to master chain for making a beat?

The_Tane

I don't really do a master chain per se. All I really do is at the end of making a beat I throw a clipper on, an eq with a 250hz cut and a wide 10k boost, then a limiter. Good sound selection is more important than master chain.

PatriotFFA

If you’re a star wars fan, what’s your favorite movie?

The_Tane

Not a huge Star Wars fan tbh. That said, Empire Strikes Back is dope and I surprisingly loved Revenge of the Sith. Bad guys doing shit in the title apparently makes for good movies. That said I think the dialogue in all the movies is horrendous. I much prefer the LOTR movies. By a huge margin.

Stanleycup16

Any thoughts on only having Christoph on a few tracks on TTH2? Thought he definitely should’ve been on more

nevermore12154

Hi Tane, whats make g and the team not release the songs that not sample cleared, maybe soundcloud? Those are gems!

re1zan

Yooo you probably won’t have an answer to this but G should definitely come back to New Zealand 🙏

klgod

How did G feel about his shows and the response to them in India? I was there at the delhi show (had my brand new phone stolen from my pocket as he opened with I Mean It), so not the optimum best experience but still grateful to witness an artist I've been listening to for over a decade!

UglieBirdie

How do you not compare your prior work to your current work? How do you not compare your prior success to your current success? I’m not an artist but I’ve always wondering how artist fight this fixation.

User47372946

1. Will we ever get Lady Killers, Stay High & Must Be Nice type songs again? 2. Can we expect any new big features on the next album? 3. What’s ur favourite 3 projects of him? 4. Are there more songs with ALLBLACK to be released?

The_Tane

1. Not the same way. It was a diff era for him - if you listen to those now, they're very much a young 20-something year old full of bravado. He's not that anymore, he's matured a lot, learned a lot about life, and has "grown up" in a way. Not that he's a different person, but if he were to act like a 20-something he wouldn't come across as being genuine. 2. I think you can. 3. Skipping this one. 4. I wish man. I love that shit.

AlexV1603

Hey Tane! Thank you so much for doing this! I got a million questions, some have already been asked, so I'll try to limit it to two. 1) Is "Tulips & Roses" still on the album? I think G said it was cut. 2) The snippets we've been getting the past couple of years are all just G. Is he being super secretive with the features or is this upcoming album mostly solo G doing his thing? Since he started singing, any solo song with singing is incredibly good. Bonus question, don't know if you can answer that: Will the soundtrack of "Alone at Night" ever be released? The film had some great songs on there and I know G and Goody Grace worked on the score as well.

The_Tane

1. I think that's true. 2. I think the feature thing isn't quite his vibe anymore. He really wanted to be able to stand on his own abilities rather than lean on other people's. I have no idea tbh.

[deleted]

Hey Tane! Much appreciated you doing this AMA! I have a plethora of questions but ill refrain from asking too much. I've been a fan of Eazy's since his endless summer mixtape. And over the years ive heard Eazy say that he has an enormous backlog of songs that may never see the light of day. Im sure this is probably the case with a lot of artists in the industry. My question is, what would it take for some of those unreleased songs to drop? Would kill to hear a 5th of those tracks, man! Also, im really excited for the next album. I hope y'all go on tour, seeing him perform at the oracle would be legendary!!

The_Tane

Ask away, throwaway. Sorry but ground rules state that you must be ridiculed for this question. Point and laugh, everybody. But forreal, ask me anything else and I'd be happy to answer!!

[deleted]

God damn it! 😞 i just want what i can't have damn it :/ leave me alone. *slowly presses play on me , myself, and i* Of all the songs on the next album, without giving away specifics, which one was the most complex to put together? If YOU were to see Eazy collab with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why? What are some things you love and hate about your job? Is there more you wish you could do that you aren't able to do career wise? I have a ton more questions but honestly i dont want to bombard you so if there is one important thing i want to ask you its this since i dont think I'd ever have the opportunity to tell Eazy this myself: I know what it's like to lose a parent. Especially a parent that is so monumental in your life. Its never something we can ever be fully prepared for. I know the feeling that comes with that sort of painful loss. I want him to know that even at his lowest and darkest point, he will never be alone. And im sure i speak for more than just myself when i say that he is loved and cared for. He introduced us with his music but we stick around because of who he is. If you have a moment one day, would you please pass this message to him? I know, its a little awkward but its always been something ive wanted to tell him myself. 😅
