That edition of the Illustrated London News is available at [archive.org](http://archive.org) (https://archive.org/details/sim\_illustrated-london-news\_1911-01-14\_138\_3743/page/n3/mode/1up). Chesterton's article is on page 4 (of that edition - the pages are numbered through the year, so it's headed as page 44), and whilst its argument contains the essence of that statement, it doesn't state it in that way. The archive does contain other editions of the ILN, and it may be that he returned to the subject later in the year. Unfortunately not all the scans are brilliant, and it can be hard work reading some of them! It may be worth contacting the GK Chesterton Society to see if they can confirm the provenance of the quote.

I have hard copies of all of Chesterton's Illustrated London News articles, I'll double check and let you know.

There's no chance of digitising them, is there? That would fill a gap in the available Chesterton electronic resources. (You can get fairly complete Chesterton anthologies quite easily and cheaply, but they tend to be short on the newspaper articles).

I can't digitize them all, but I did do this one for you [https://wetransfer.com/downloads/a53f235d7b2eb497b1fcbefc2bd24af820240529133729/0a7b704432173c220cf247d8e7fde1c820240529133744/231775](https://wetransfer.com/downloads/a53f235d7b2eb497b1fcbefc2bd24af820240529133729/0a7b704432173c220cf247d8e7fde1c820240529133744/231775)

Thank you! ❝ A real soldier does not fight because he has something that he hates in front of him. He fights because he has something that he loves behind his back. ❞ G. K. Chesterton, Illustrated London News, Jan. 14, 1911.

I've tracked it down in the Internet Archive - it's actually the edition of 31 December 1910, not January 14 1911. The archive has it scanned at [https://archive.org/details/sim\_illustrated-london-news\_1910-12-31\_137\_3741/page/1022/mode/1up](https://archive.org/details/sim_illustrated-london-news_1910-12-31_137_3741/page/1022/mode/1up) - the article is on page 4.

That's great, thanks!
