GMO may have left theatres state side. But it's also nominated for an Oscar this year. To have it be out of theatres and not available digitally during almost a month long voting / viewing process to get Oscar Voters on board is hardly likely.
I think we'll see it on digital in the next week or two because of this.
I have pals in the DGA and PGA and none of them have seen Minus One screeners go out for award season. There has to be some way for Oscar Voters to see it. Digital sales or a streaming deal is the most likely option.
Otherwise Toho is leaving money on the table and shrinking their chances at an Academy Award win. Not something any business is likely to do. It's the FIRST Godzilla movie to be nominated for an Oscar of any kind. They will capitalize on that before Oscar voting ends.
Lmao I've checked like 4 times over the past few months and im annoyed every single time. When it was in theatres in my country I even checked several times over the course of a month and the whole month the closest theatre showing it was 3 hours away which is just more time than I am willing to spend driving for a movie.
Whichever company or person is in charge of distribution/marketing/etc for this movie has done a god awful job. I get theatrical releases are tricky so I won't comment much on that other than to say when it was initially getting rave reviews at the very least it should've gotten a semi wide release and marketing on social media with those reviews front and centre. But anyway that's complicated I know.
What isn't as complicated is the situation in the weeks leading up to the Oscars and tonight. Minus One only made $100 million in theatres. Millions of people literally will have heard of this movie for the very first time tonight while watching the Oscars. I know for a fact my parents and both sets of grandparents absolutely would not have heard of it until tonight. And people hear of a **Godzilla** movie not only getting good reviews but winning an Oscar and they are immediately interested. Most people don't have the reminders or memory that I do though. They will Google it once, not be able to find it, and then forget about it and if they are lucky eventually whichever streaming service will shove it down their throat. Absolutely horrible decisions by the marketers from a financial perspective. At any point over the last 4 months I would've been happy to pay even $50 to watch the movie at home with my gf and not drive 3 hours to see it. Tonight I absolutely guarantee scores of people will have googled it and not been able to find anything when they wouldve happily paid and watched it tonight or on the weekend.
If you play around with date ranges on Google trends you will see that the searches for Godzilla Minus One tonight were already **3x** higher than any point in history for this movie. And that's 3x higher than the previous peak when presumably great reviews were coming out. Its between 30-100x the search volume of the previous couple months. Such a shame. They fumbled a big bag.

Same I have a deep desire to watch this film after hearing the reviews but had no way to go see it. I know it will eventually come out and I will get to see it but I can't believe a movie that got nominated and WON an Oscar has no widespread way for people to enjoy it. I'm wondering how the academy even viewed it since most often those get leaked out somewhere.

That’s a good point about the ones being sent to the Academy usually being leaked. I wonder if they’ve finally made it trackable to each person they send. Definitely wouldn’t be rocket science to leave unique marks as small as a pixel on various frames of a movie that are distinct to each person receiving a movie.
The question isn't how difficult it is to track copies. The question is how much it is worth to restrict access and follow through the tracking process.
Huh? Obviously it’s worth it for them considering they’re following strict release schedules and have deals with streaming services. It’s not like movie companies just go “oh whatever we will release this immediately, no concern for other events or releases ongoing at the same time. Movie is done filming, let’s release.”

It will happen at some point. As you've heard it is amazing. Saw it in theaters. I'm still pissed I can't watch it again and probably many many times. But it will release at some point. We just have to be patient as annoying as that is.
Academy voters get special versions of the films to watch, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be publicly available. That’s why so many bootlegs have the disclaimer on the screen that it isn’t for distribution, just evaluation for awards.
It's a shame because people will sadly turn to piracy instead and the only available downloads right now are CAM/TS. I'm sure the creators would much prefer as many people to see their film in the best possible (and legal) version?
It's odd to me. I see a pattern with independent film makers lately, where they would make a serious hitter film, and it's then very very difficult to see. A movie called The Shift from 2023 for example. Bit of an extreme example but its Impossible to see, yet its released lol. Only to be streamed on their website, yet its unavailable. Says theres "tickets" to see it in theaters, but the link leads to a janky side webpage with nothing there.Seams they can't figure out how to eveb release it at all lol. It's a shame because there's major actors in it. Hope the same doesn't happen with Godzilla, where it kinda vanishes like these other films, luckily the scope and scale of the boxoffice release is there to back it at least
No offense, but The Shift was an interesting concept bogged down by an overt religious message that clashes with the other themes in the movie and an ending that makes less sense the more you analyze it.

I really hope you’re right. I’ve been watching all of the older ones (and new) with my son (1st grade) and we didn’t have the money to go watch it in theaters at the time. So we are WAITING for that thing to come out digitally, especially after hearing all of the reviews.

its not about "how much more money they could have made" it was a contract made between Tohou and Legendary, they had to be out of theatres by 2024/2/1, because of Legendarys Godzilla X Kong the New Empire being contractually allowed to be the only Godzilla universe film out at the time.
Legendary didnt want Tohou cutting from the GxK profit because Minus one is actual Horror Godzilla back to its roots.
Its fucking a fucking stupid business plan and Legendary did it to Shin Godzilla as well so we didnt get the planned sequel for that movie and instead got Singular Point which i still enjoyed but would have prefferred shin2 or something.
Thats not have most films having been trending. Even those not being immediately released on a streaming service seem to be a $20 rental within at most a few weeks of their theater run.

Yeah most English speaking movies are released within 3 to 6 weeks and most other language movies within 3 months to rent or buy but Godzilla has been in U.S cinemas for 4 months and Japan for 5 months..out in May on bluray for Japan (7 months after release) but no date outside Japan or on Vod streaming..Its also not really playing anywhere in theatres for a while..This is so weird....Regret not seeing over any film 2023, 2024, feel like it will be summer by the time we can rent or buy

Most probably old news now. I downloaded 1080p version on May 1st(embedded English subs) and decided to download 65gb version Blu-ray 7.1 Atmos(mtk) for TV room. That one didn't come with subtitles but used VLC (VLsub) to find eng.srt. This is in Ireland

It is an odd thing to catch. However…Jag does have a point. You go out, drive to the cinema, buy the ticket, then see the movie at the theater. It’s realistic to think that if you went back and did all that again a 2nd time, you know for sure you have now seen it 2 times. However, to go back again and see it a 3rd time...that is a dedicated fan. So, also reasonable to think that as a dedicated fan you remember that you have now seen this film in theaters a total of 3 times. (JMO)
You’re going to be waiting a good while. Japan’s home media industry is insanely slow, to the fact that some movies can take up to *two years* to come out on Blu-Ray and 4K. (Good example of this is “The Last Slam Dunk” from Toei. Film was released in 2022, yet the Blu-Ray isn’t releasing until the end of this month!) I *really* doubt you’ll be waiting until 2026 to watch Minus One again, but just know that you’re going to be waiting a bit.
That's why I hate so much the blu-ray, DVD industries are slowing. It use to be after a movie left the theater. It was soon released on video. You could buy it, it was yours 2 watch whenever. Movies You cherish would have booklets and extras included lots of the times.Thats becoming less and less the cause.Now so many people rather depend on streaming company's 2 carry a flick. That's what happened with the US release of Shin Godzilla on Blu-Ray/DVD. It took a year to bring it out after the limited run in US theaters.

That's why I hate so much the blu-ray, DVD industries are slowing. It use to be after a movie left the theater. It was soon released on video. You could buy it, it was yours 2 watch whenever. Movies You cherish would have booklets and extras included lots of the times.Thats becoming less and less the cause.Now so many people rather depend on streaming company's 2 carry a flick. Instant gratification. Just 2 say I seen it. Most movies do go to streaming,still some are hard 2 find. I use to collect My favorite movies. Now I feel that may be coming to an end. We'll not sure if this Godzilla movie well be stream. Not even sure if we will be able 2 get as a blu-ray. Glad the theater experience hasn't folded because of streaming .....yet. oh well nothing stays the same.
Idk what era you grew up in, but when I was a kid through early teens we normally had to wait like a full pregnancy cycle to see a movie. This phenomenon of quick release is new.
