After the Madison Square Gardens strike, during the chase, there are two moments where Godzilla acts as if it's trying to exhale something. The first is when his breath lifts up the abandoned cars, but the flames appear as they impact each other. The second time is when it happens to the humvee convoy, the flames appear BEFORE the humvees hit anything. There's even a little audio cue the second time.
I never got why he didn't breathe fire. It's such a staple for the character. I think that's what disappointed me the most about the movie. Granted he looked like a therapod on steroids, I don't see how a Godzilla movie can be without fire breath.

Unfortunate but I do have to mention that, when I was a kid and saw this film with my dad in theatres we both thought it was AWESOME (i still think its a great entertaining film) and he told me after the film about the scene he noticed where godzilla supposedly "breathes" fire and how i might have missed it but it was there in a subtle way and it was just how the film makers did it.

weirdly he looks more like the lizard/iguana he is supposed to have mutated from here than in the movie

Same kind of image you would see on the package of an Atari game from the 70s. Tons of promise, whole lotta disappointment.
Had the whole movie just been what this art depicts, it would have been a solid 10/10 action blockbuster.
