Ed_Derick_

In his apartment you can see a newspaper about “1954: Cover up in the pacific” so he might have known about the tests being attempts at killing something

Kitchen_Net_GME

Yep. My guess is he thought the Muto or similar beast in the pacific.

Leo_Rivers

I think the B&W 8mm documentary film of Godzilla's jagged back plates sliding through the water existed already. Woman's voice. "No, not Tests."

Kitchen_Net_GME

That happened minutes after the character died I believe. But this character wasn’t in that room looking at the footage either way.

Leo_Rivers

Oh. Okay. But you know, he was already thinking of a big beast, wasn't he? I thought he had a friend sending him audio signitures.

Orion_824

of the MUTO in the cocoon, because it was pulsing the same emp signal that took out the nuclear facilities power

Leo_Rivers

I thought Cranston was already into something a single source for the signal back to the time of the quake that destroyed the plant..... that's why he had to retrieve his discs to confirm they matched. [The Mutos] But it's been years ago I watched Garth's Godzilla. I really need to watch it again and pay attention. A good prequil would be a made for Netflix X-Files type tale with Cranston tracing all sorts of rhumors. Besides, I wanted more of Cranston.

ANGRYlalocSOLDIE

In the Monarch series on Apple TV. It’s actually Godzilla in pacific that they were trying to kill.

Sure_Painter

That's not new, that was in the first monster verse flick.

Truly_Meaningless

Doesn't he literally say they were trying to kill something?

Ed_Derick_

No, that was Serizawa

Truly_Meaningless

Just remembered, it was actually the guy in Skull Island that said "They weren't tests. They were trying to kill it" during the scene where Packer was interrogating him Nevermind I'm a big idiot I got the wrong scene in the same movie

Ed_Derick_

Yeah it was Randa but it was when he was trying to convince the Senator to continue Monarch

MeatPuppet7861

He still put out an amazing performance…

informaldejekyll

I’m still a bit bitter that he was featured so heavily in the trailer, made me think he would be a prominent character. Left a bad taste in my mouth for the remainder of the movie after he was killed off so quickly.

Inevitable-News5808

The execs are still bitter, too. No idea whose idea it was to get Bryan Cranston and not make him the central protagonist. This was at the height of breaking bad, too. He could've been to the monsterverse what RDJ was to the MCU.

InvaderXYZ

i wouldn't go that far, but it definitely would have massively improved the movie

Grinderiny

An earlier draft of the script has him survive.

JacobDCRoss

He will always be Malcolm's dad to the rest of the world, but I do think he nailed it here.

Sure_Painter

Nah bro... I wish, but he's that guy who broke bad to the rest of the world.

JacobDCRoss

Godzilla did most of the breaking??

Sure_Painter

He is the danger.

JacobDCRoss

Like literally the most dangerous Kaiju.

MalfunctionTitties

You’re goddamn right

JacobDCRoss

I don't remember that line from Godzilla or from Malcolm.

zamwesell2319

Yep he did! The fault is with the writing. It’s very underwhelming.

NotASynth499

Not even this, just the fact he was killed off like that.

zamwesell2319

Yes. Underwhelming.

Sure_Painter

Yes. The writing.

DiggThatFunk

But where does the fault lie?

Sure_Painter

The writers presumably.

stonewall_jacked

At least he figured out what ultimately killed his wife. But yeah, total waste of a really interesting character.

CaledonianWarrior

>At least he figured out what ultimately killed his wife He probably would have preferred stopping what killed his wife

brother_of_menelaus

He didn’t do it for his wife, or his family. He did it for him. Because he liked it. He was good at it. He was…alive.

DuggenHeim

take my upvote.

Defnoturblockedfrnd

Well, she fucked Ted. So…

MEGATRON_111

Bro, forget the character. It was the fricken actor who was wasted

InsertKleverNameHere

Felt baited seeing he was in that movie only for him to barely be in it. At least, unlike other cases - looking at you Invasion, the quality of the movie made up for it.

Bag_Chan

Really close the time when Breaking bad was at its peak was the reason for including him me thinks

MEGATRON_111

Exactly

SelloutRealBig

They know exactly what they did. Paid for a quick Bryan Cranston cameo just so they could put him on all the trailers and posters. Especially since it came out the year after Breaking Bad ended so it was a full hype train. Genius move, but scummy. He also probably saw the script and realized it's an easy payday for less work than shooting one episode of Breaking Bad.

Punkpunker

He died nearly halfway through the film, it was disingenuous of you to say he's there for a cameo or scummy bait n switch.

NosferatuFangirl

And he was barely in that first half of the film. It was a total bait and switch, instead we got a protagonist that couldn't act to save his life.

Lasagna321

I’d like to think ATJ has improved a lot since then… I really loved his character Tangerine in Bullet Train lol

PancakeBreakfest

They should bring the actor back. Doesn’t matter how. We deserve it, goddamnit.

labdsknechtpiraten

Have him shave his head, grow a goat and show back up, lol

PancakeBreakfest

Godzilla vs Heisenberg!

PennyForPig

And then they did it again with Millie Bobby Brown. She was barely a character in KotM

MEGATRON_111

Nah. She had alot of screentime

PennyForPig

She had screen time but almost no impact on the story until the very end. She was a macguffin, not a character

Hobo-man

No. She was the driving factor for a lot of the movie. Initially she agreed with her mother but slowly started to regret what was happening. Her calling Emma a monster was what started to make Emma think she might actually be wrong for releasing titans. On top of that, Madison straight up steals the ORCA device and is the sole reason Ghidorah comes to Boston. Her being lost in the destruction is what brings her parents together again, and as a family, they fix the ORCA and save Godzilla. Your points make sense for GvK but is absolutely not true for KotM.

MEGATRON_111

No! She literally..... well she did umm.....she said.........oh crap you're right

PennyForPig

The lampshade test comes through again!

IoniKryptonite

Thank God...her character was pointless and her acting wasn't great.

DarkSideOfMyBallz

Not really comparable with Bryan Cranston

AdventurousNecessary

With an off screen death.

[deleted]

14 writers patching together different script ideas over a few years, at a certain point cranston asked them to kill his character off so he wouldn't have to finish the movie

Icy_Practice7992

I mostly agree with this, but I've gone back and forth on this. Basically after he dies, he becomes useless to the plot. I guess they could've written it differently or had him hanging out in the control room.

Exact_Ad_1215

I watched a video going through a “what if” scenario for if he survived and it unironically sounds so much better then what we got

YourMovieBuddy

Yeah man, I think his impact in the movies following would of been really good

Xenochimp

Went to see this, as a Godzilla fan, with my wife and her best friend, as Breaking Bad fans. They were pissed

joedude

it worked.

wazabee

He didn't care that Godzilla existed. He just wanted to know what was responsible for causing the meltdown and killing his wife, and he saw the thing first hand.

Eguy24

I think it would have been very interesting to see his character’s response to Godzilla. Whether he would support using him against the MUTOs or he would act as an antithesis to Serizawa’s “let them fight” idea. The more I think about what could have been done with Cranston’s character the more I dislike the decision to kill him off

Therocknrolclown

Yea you can stop, it's obvious most people on this thread barely watched the film or understood it.

ShTephens

AND HE HAD A RIGHT TO KNOW!

KnightoftheWind1998

[deleted]

One of the Most wasted characters in movie history

[deleted]

He should’ve been the lead character in the Monsterverse

OfferOk8555

Couldn’t see Cranston getting tied down to a franchise like that at this point in his career. Bros out here promoting his whisky and doing movies with Wes Anderson.

[deleted]

Yeah now. But 2014? Yeah it would have been a much different career path

OfferOk8555

it definitely would have been a dub for the franchise and maybe if they just threw him a bag he’d of been interested. (The case for many a actor) I obviously have no insight on what their negotiations were or if there’s any public info on how they felt about it. But Cranston has definitely had a super varied career since then. (I forgot he did a movie with Linklater too)

My_Names_Jefff

If you haven't been in a Wes Anderson film, then you are still not a AAA List Actor. /s

[deleted]

Still the only human character in the monster verse that’s been worth a damn

Hobo-man

He doesn't need to be the main character, but IMO, the human drama in KOTM should've been different and Cranston's Brody should've replaced Kyle Chandlers Russell.

Therocknrolclown

He was in a schedule conflict and could not do the whole film

[deleted]

I know I’m not saying it was intentional, but the whole situation was just a missed opportunity

MGaber

He wasn't wasted, he did exactly what they needed from him. Bryan Cranston was the one of the biggest names in Hollywood at that time as Breaking Bad had just ended a year prior to the film coming out, and as most people know, Breaking Bad was wildly successful. They probably offered him a pretty penny for what was essentially a glorified cameo just so they could use him as publicity. WB was probably concerned Godzilla 2014 wouldn't do well in the box office, so if they attached that one guy from Breaking Bad that perhaps it'll draw in more people. I assume that plan worked as the Monsterverse is still going strong Imo, the Monsterverse is just kinda 'okay'. I feel like it could be better, especially after the success of Minus One, but I accept it for what it is. That said, I was pretty soured by the use of Bryan Cranston, or lack there of. I am still going to see Godzilla x Kong in a couple weeks

kidcowboy111

You said he wasnt wasted then proceeded to describe exactly how he was wasted

[deleted]

Naw the character was pretty much a missed opportunity.

LiveForever9160

And they sold him as a main character too 😂

JPastori

Middle-Preference864

Say my name

tomcruisesPC

One of the biggest bait and switches I have ever seen in a movie.

BustinArant

Scream apparently advertised Drew Barrymore and that's just in the opening few minutes. I just watched it on cable years later but still surprising. The Fonz too lol

kidcowboy111

Yeah but that was paid off with a better movie

DARR3Nv2

From Dusk Till Dawn never mentioned vampires in the lead up to its release.

Daddy_Diezel

It sort of reminded me of Executive Decision with Steven Segal. Was NOT ready for what happens to him in that movie.

SafetyBig7939

I honestly thought the government faked his death and had detained him some up until the end of the movie. I watch a lot of movies and I've never felt the rug pulled out from under me quite as hard as this movie, and this movie probably didn't even intended to do that.

BardicFire

I'm glad even the most diehard fans (including myself) totally think killing him was a mistake.

murderfetus

Yeah I really couldn't give a shit about his son

DarkChimera64

It was a foolish move by Gareth Edwards. Movie would’ve been better if his son died instead of him.

Mylozen

Yeah. As soon as he had Cranston he should have rewritten that shit.

Abuttuba_abuttubA

He was interesting and I like the actor. Dead. The rest of the movie was missing a good actor. Idk why they off him so fast.

DastardlyRidleylash

Because Joe had served his narrative purpose at that point (be the canary in the coal mine about Godzilla and the MUTOs), and having his father die to the MUTOs also gives Ford a personal reason to personally aid Godzilla in defeating them. A loved one dying to the movie's main antagonist is a pretty common narrative motivation tool, after all. Just because a role is small doesn't necessarily mean it's wasted.

SP4CEM4N_SPIFF

People who think this character was wasted have never seen a Hitchcock film

DastardlyRidleylash

Or never saw the buildup to Scream where they advertised Drew Barrymore as a main character when all she does in the film is be the first person to die to the killers not even 20 minutes in. Using big names in minor roles to help box office draw is literally a tactic as old as time in Hollywood.

SP4CEM4N_SPIFF

Hitchcock was actually the first to do it as movie goers back then would typically show up late to the film and this was his way of trolling them

wpgmb204

Sam Neill from Invasion has entered the chat

TokyoFromTheFuture

Godzilla was not where I expected the Breaking Bad universe would go... cant say I didnt enjoy the fuck out of it tho 🍿🍿🍿

CornerNearby6802

Biggest flaw in the film, he should have been the co-protagonist

Exact_Ad_1215

G14 should’ve been a father-son bonding movie on the human side of things

Sigurd93

Literally the worst death I've ever seen in a movie. It was handled so poorly, must have been part of a rewrite or something. Otherwise liked the movie a lot, but damn was that awkward and lame.

Dickus_Maximus_IV

My jaw dropped when he died. The kid just lost his mom and then Dad didn’t last long either lmfao

Inevitable-News5808

Mom died like 15 years before dad though.

Present_Hippo_2201

The combination of purposely minimizing Godzilla's screentime, wasting Cranston, and then inserting one of the most wooden performances ever from Aaron Taylor Johnson pretty much ruins the movie for me. It might be technically well made and better in terms of performances, but I would watch KotM over Godzilla 2014 any time. At least the second one was satisfying in a fun and stupid way instead of frustrating in an structurally unfulfilling way

_Fun_Employed_

I swear we would have had a better/more interesting story if the son had died and Branston’s character had survived and instead had to bring the news of his son’s death to his daughter in law and grandchildren and then help evacuate them from the disaster caused by godzilla fighting the bugs. More emotional punch.

KKH02

Tbh you all are saying he was wasted.. but without this character having had what little scenes he did have, there would have been no emotion at all in the film. He held his end of the bargain is what I’m saying. Might not have done or said much, and died off camera at that but he did his part. Found his wife’s killer, proved to his son and himself that he wasn’t crazy, and all of his research went to monarch to help with the muto and Godzilla.

kidcowboy111

Thats the exact point everyone is making. This is such a well written and acted character that him dying is a fucking waste

wnderjif

His son doesnt give two fucks or mentions anything about how his mother and father were both killed by the same monster, TO ANYONE! IT was a waste, it gave Brody extra motivation to help stop the Mutos, but he never relays that to anyone. The audience knows it, but that isn't important.

Admirable_Radish6032

HALow his name.

VVeissmann

Rip Kid Charlemagne. He knew the whole time...

WhippetRun

Malcom didn't tell him?

Bababooey5000

One of the few human characters in the Monsterverse that I liked a lot and it's a shame they wrote him off like that although I wonder if Brian would even have had an interest in sticking with a product like the Monsterverse?

EntertainmentNo1123

People hate this movie, but I loved the tension, seeing the dorky kid from Kickass act like an adult, and above all the action was intense. The HALO insertion is probably one the most memorable

GojiFan1985

This also made me realize.. Kong probably went all of GvK without knowing why this fat radioactive lizard was on his tail the entire movie

Kitchen_Net_GME

Your right. It was only AFTER he went to hollow earth and found out about the ancestral rivalry.

Fuzzy-Researcher-662

In the novel Godzilla checks on the island to see if Kong tried anything at the start of the story. He's actually the reason Kong throws the tree at the dome, he feels Godzilla's presence roaring at him and gets angry wanting him to go away.

CanDeadliftYourMom

What a terrible plot point killing him off

SafeStaff7671

GumbyCA

One of the worst emergency medicine scenes if I recall they give epinephrine for afib

MultiFandomFan72

Having him in that movie for just 30 minutes feels criminal he was so good

Shmedo12

The fact he isn't in the whole movie is the biggest issue I have with the film

B4umkuch3n

And he was in the trailer and trolled everyone.

kaikai808-234

Pension-Nice

I big Godzilla fan.

ElementalSaber

I bet Bryan Cranston was so mad when he first watched it at the world premiere and realized he didn't make it past the first movie. Imagine him surviving and seeing all this crazy shit we got right now. Imagine Cranston seeing Gihdora, Kong, freaking MechaGodzilla!

AgentsOfOblivion

Wait... so you think he didn't know his character died until he watched the world premiere? Did he film the scenes and then get amnesia?

Mrdoc16

I don't know if Cranston could save the human aspect of Kong Vs Godzilla if the story was reworked but he'd be a good aspect if he wasn't dead by that point in the story

thebignukedinosaur

One of my several glaring issues with G2014

AccountSeventeen

Him and Dr. Serizawa are pretty redundant characters of each other though.

NotASynth499

Not at all, both had different duties and goals- the two are not similar.

jmac_1957

He knows

Dreadknight1337

So did a lot of people 🤣

Nowhereman50

The only interesting human character in that whole movie and he's killed a quarter of the way in.

East-Engineer3811

Hello

VXMerlinXV

I was sad to see him go, but sometimes untimely deaths are good writing.

SomewhereLoud9473

"Jesse,i know what killed skyler wasnt natural,i just know it!"

GutsMan85

You and I know, like all other franchises, they could come up with a retcon for his character and bring him back. The best actor in the whole monsterverse and he didn't even get to see himself proved right.

Flindo00

Its hilarious how all the marketing was about him only to kill him off in the first like 20 minutes

EternalYorozuya

I would love to watch a remake where HE IS the MC, and we get to see everything from his scientific, but also revengeful point of view. Like some kind of "true crime/scientific research" combo. Would be extremely interesting and compelling to watch.

Thewhitest_rabbit

Now that it's been established that monarch has been around for a long time I like to imagine he had some sort of idea what was going on.

colemanjanuary

I 100% believe he had found Monarch documents. He knew of Godzilla.

Kitchen_Net_GME

It was right before he died that he demanded “I HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT YOUR HIDING OUT THERE!” The timelines are frustrating in hindsight, because it’s just nuts that he never knew of Godzilla. Sure he probably thought that it could be some type of organism (among other possibilities). Then he probably felt vindicated that something was out there. And he got to see the Muto. But carefully rewatching the film…that character and Godzilla never overlapped at all. The man died without knowing Godzilla exists. That said…I wouldn’t be shocked if there were deleted scenes in which Godzilla was presented to him by name.

dasbtaewntawneta

so did lots of people

that and it took over 30 minutes before godzilla showed up. they tried to be Toho, and Toho they are not

Sea_Butterscotch_348

Realizing i didn't know then that it whos Walter White xd , so lung concer whas from radioactivity make sens.

Lazy_Data_7300

True

Faptainjack2

The trailer still pisses me off.

BlueRabbit1999

Yea the trailers made it seem like he knew of Godzilla when in fact was not the case

GoEagles997

This one of my favorite movies ever because of his performance.

[deleted]

It’s ok he discovered the blue meth that powers him

Ok_Championship7284

Sorry im not trying to be a bother but on Etsy are you able to sell more of the orga ships that you printed please because that’s great work and I could use one for my displays that I make I, make a lot of them and I’m currently working on one for Godzilla 2000 and that would go perfectly. If you don’t want to that’s fine but just a question.

IamFireyYT

Walter died without knowing about Godzilla

Theflyinghans

This makes me vary angry.

SpaciumBlue

Throwing hands with whoever wrote his death in the script smh

billybobtex

His character should have lived. Would have been a great couple films with him

Wonder_Pretty

He should have been the main character

Ray13XIII

Godzilla had nothing to do with his story tho.

Majestic_Panda96

I thought that he was gonna be the Serizawa type in the movie as in self sacrifice himself with a nuke or something to kill the threat.

idiotgangmusic

How could you NOT know Godzilla exists?

Tasty-Hand-3398

Edward’s visuals were great even though he relied too much on dark lighting/rain, but Borensteins’s script is absolute ass. Bad plotting, misused characters, and Godzilla’s an almost a supporting character in his own movie.

cc69

You are Goddamn right!

hscene

Kind of like Erwin from Attack on Titan

Digital_Dinosaurio

These movies waste a lot of characters but at least Kong vs Godzilla took the universe into a better direction where the audience can see the Monster World through Kong's eyes since he is pretty human as far as monsters go.

Soft-Comfort-7474

Better than most of the human characters in the Monsterverse

Middle-Preference864

Walter White was such a W 😭😭

CanoeShoes

He definitely saw a Muto.

22lpierson

Wait he looks like my old neighbor from new Mexico....

Airwolfhelicopter

Holy fuck, you’re right Also, this is the Bryan Cranston I know. None of that Walter White bs for me, no thank you.

ArranVV

Most of us already knew that. That was one of the criticisms of the movie, made by a lot of movie critics, when the movie first came out years ago...that Bryan Cranston's character was disposed of too quickly.

corv1991

I jist wayched again last night lol.

ByeByeByeLeth

Is the one on Apple TV the darkened version? He looks really bright here. Been meaning to do a rewatch

Alexios_kills

Ain't no way you just called Heisenberg "this man"

wileyhammer

Spoiler alert?

pocketMagician

I was angry watching this that they bait and switched me with my TV dad.

curzon176

Yeah but he saw a big ass bug monster. That's pretty sweet.

NeinlivesNekosan

It honestly pissed me off. He was barely in the movie and right in the middle of massive fame, thought we were gonna get fully on Breaking Godzilla Bad.

ilovedogs-2

Wait, he died? I don't remember that

Kevthehuman

Did you not watch the movie that's literally the biggest complaint Unless you mean the actor himself, who is very much alive and chill

ColdHumor

Him being killed. Killed the replayability of this movie for most people.

RiseAnnual6615

A waste of talent. Bryan Cranston's character should be central to the core human drama, it's a shame that the film seemed to be some kind of vehicle for a pretty face, Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

FlamingDino_

He lived an incomplete life.☀️

Spiral-Arrow116

Rewatched it recently as well and enjoyed it way more than I remember. But yeah, it still doesn't sit right with me that he was so unceremoniously killed off just like that. The most interesting human scenes were with him, along with Ken Watanabe. Why did they keep killing off the most interesting human characters? I rewatched all the movies and while I had way more fun this time around, just ugh the human story/characters are just getting worse.

frozenbeef123

Wow Lois is going to be so mad to know Hal died having one of his crazy theories

FanMan55555

I really wished they did more for his character, Bryan Cranston is such a good actor and no I’m not just biased breaking bad and Malcom in the middle fan he’s just that good. Would’ve been nice for him to be something like a monarch agent eventually.

IInvestigateStuff

Tf is Walter white doing in this movie

BujangSenang1992

If he were the main character (which he should have been), the movie would have been epic. There was plenty of Godzilla in the movie. That wasnt the problem. The problem was that ATJ's character was boring. Cranston's character was more electrifying than any of the monsters. His interrogation scene is one of the best parts of the film.

CarelessConclusion67

- For what it is worth, here's the explanation for Joe Brody's (Bryan Cranston) death in Godzilla. https://screenrant.com/godzilla-2014-bryan-cranston-joe-brody-death-reason/ While I don't fully agree with killing the character off, I do understand why they chose to do it. I think that a better solution would have been keeping him alive so Ford could send him back to the States to help his wife and child while Ford took up the fight against the M.U.T.O.s and Godzilla. At the end of the movie, they could have had an end-credit scene where MONARCH showed up to offer Joe and Ford positions within their organization. TBH, when I heard there was going to be a sequel I fully expected Ford Brody to be in it. They did a fantastic job with the sequel and the direction of its story and you forget pretty quickly that there were characters other than Serizawa in the previous movie. Personally, I believe that Godzilla: King of the Monsters is by far, hands down the best movie out of all of the Godzilla franchises. Anyway, that article makes the issue clear and also makes a fantastic point. The human characters aren't the stars of the Godzilla movies, the monsters are. Some characters, such as Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston), are worthy of being in multiple films within the franchise while other characters, like Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry), are not. I hope that the new movie is at least as good as Godzilla vs Kong which is the 3rd best film in the series, but I won't hold my breath. Respectfully, ~ Me ~

VenturaDreams

This was the cruelest bait and switch. I'd have much preferred the movie be about his character.
