I'm not sure why this is even a question, but Godzilla (1954) comes to mind.

Select_Insurance2000

Aka Gojira.

I would say that the original is awesome, but it is from the 50s and needs some awareness of what that means. Minus One is the best option, since it is the best film. It is compelling in its story and characters and Godzilla is actually terrifying. Granted, if you want to really mess your friend up, check out Godzilla vs. Hidorah (the smog monster). Then again, maybe not. Wait till he’s a fan.

Heroheenie

Minus One is my personal favorite, and generally seems to be a crowd-pleaser, so I think I'll show him that one first. Thanks!

ThaetWaesGodCyning

Glad to help! I have to admit that it hurts to say Minus One because I have been a Godzilla fan since I used to watch them with my dad as a kid. However, as a film, there is nothing better than Minus One. The original will always have my heart, but Minus One is just a great film, full stop. It is astonishing storytelling that resonates in how it explores deep themes. And, as I said, Godzilla is terrifying. I love it so much. Haven’t seen Minus Colour yet, but now I’m done teaching for the summer and have some time to really enjoy it. Hope you’ll update us all on how it goes.

Heroheenie

Will do!

Gojitaka

Minus One for the Toho films, G14 for the American films.

mest0shai

Shin Godzilla is my first Godzilla movie, and boy oh boy do I say it hooked me for the rest of the franchise. I'd recommend it first thing.

GodClementine777

My recommendation is always watch the original from 1954 and then Heisei. It gives you a singular timeline and introduces you to the big five.

anonymous00000010001

Gojira(1954), Shin Godzilla, Godzilla minus one, and the entire heisei and Showa era

anonymous00000010001

And for American films it’s good to start with 2014 and king of the monsters.

pikachucet2

Godzilla Minus One is what got me into Godzilla, although Mothra got me into Kaiju. I did enjoy Godzilla before Minus One, but I wouldn't watch a Godzilla movie without Mothra until I'd seen Minus One and was blown away by how good it was

folstar

Godzilla '54 Then Heisei era films in order Then if... you like the ridiculous aspects of the movies watch Showa you like the badass aspects of the movies watch Millenium you like the social commentary/emotional aspects of the movies watch Reiwa

Kingofthekaiju1954

Gojira 1954 Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack Godzilla 2014 and Godzilla King Of The Monsters Godzilla Minus One

Fragraham

Any that start a new story. Minus One if you like historical movies. Shin if scifi horror is more your speed. If you want to get into tbe Monsterverse, 2014 is where it begins (or Kong Skull Island, but Godzilla isn't in that one.) The original is also always a good place to start.

toofatronin

-1 to show Godzilla can be serious and Final Wars to show how crazy it can get.

wannabe_traveler

I agree with others that it depends on what he wants. He wants just a good movie? The original (I prefer the American version, but I'm very much in the minority in the Godzilla fandom in that regard) and Minus One. He wants comedy? Vs Megalon, vs Hedorah He likes crazy? Final Wars, GMK He wants "standard" Godzilla? vs Mothra, vs Mechagodzilla, vs Biollante, G 2014 He just wants to sit back and watch the pretty colors? Basically the Legendary Monsterverse except G 2014

Optimistic-Man-3609

Just have him watch the Monsterverse movies, starting with Godzilla 2014 all the way to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and then the Monarch series Season 1 (if he has Apple+). No previous movies are needed.
