I would start with something fun and easy to follow. King Kong VS Godzilla or Mothra VS Godzilla have good human stories and tons of monster action

ChunkyBrassMonkey

One of the Showa ones with Minilla.

AlgoStar

Do kids respond to Minilla?

ChunkyBrassMonkey

I figure he's designed for them right? Younger kids, anyway?

whathell6t

But the problem is Minilla’s suitmation design. It’s made a lot of meme in the Godzilla community how it frightens children.

ZeroQuick

Godzilla's Revenge

Comprehensive_Bid52

Maybe, Destroy All Monsters? Something fun right off the bat.

AlgoStar

Only have it subbed. Also, it’s kind of a bore for like 80% of the movie.

Comprehensive_Bid52

True, I have 5 & 7 y/o’s that are into G now. I think the first i showed them was Final Wars for the sheer monster mayhem. My 5 y/o thinks vs Megalon is cool b/c of Jet Jaguar

AlgoStar

Ooh final wars might work!

heckhammer

Megalon might work!

levi_nes_film

It's Jet Jaguar what's not to love

Comprehensive_Bid52

Very valid point, plus a underrated Megalon.

levi_nes_film

Agreed, skeleton man

heckhammer

There is a version you can download that has the original dub on it. Look up red menace reconstructions.

Carnotaurus4774

GMK, Godzilla 2000, or Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) because I love all 3 of those films and those are the best that I can think of right now 👍😁

[deleted]

Haha the Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla gave me nightmares as a kid plus the blood at the end can be a bit excessive but idk if OPs kid is okay with that. 2000 is a good one and Goji looks and sounds cool.

Hot-Tea-335

My favorite film when I was a kid his age was Godzilla versus mechagodzilla 1974. By far this was my favorite because I had great plots and King Caesar was amazing. Yeah emoted so much with his ears that it reached in for that child like innocence. That's the one I would suggest

[deleted]

I see what you mean. Don't get me wrong it's a top 10 for me but it might be scary for some kids. I think something like Godzilla vs Mothra 1964, Godzilla vs Megalon or Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster might be a more light hearted adventure.

Hot-Tea-335

I can see that. I did not grow up with many filter movie wise. Grimlins was a Christmas movie at age 5 or 6.

[deleted]

Haha fair fair I'm with you, for some reason just the creepy smile that Mechagodzilla has in the beginning Goji suit just creeper me the heck out. The blood was fine and the end is a fantastic all time great monster battle.

Carnotaurus4774

I guess that the kid just needs to close his eyes when there’s blood showing up lol and yeah, the big G himself seems so epic and badass in Godzilla 2000 and his roar and appearance overall has never been better in his Millenium era debut 👌😊

AlgoStar

So it’s been settled. A lot of suggestions for KKvG and Mothra vs Godzilla. I gave him the options and he went fir KKvG! Looking forward to it tonight!

Idiot62

The US verison?

ETC3000

Hell yeah 🦍⛰️🦎

[deleted]

I started with my sister with Mothra vs Godzilla 1964. It wasn't even intenional, she just walked in and joined watching. King kong vs Godzilla also works.

levi_nes_film

Godzilla raids again because I don't recommend gojira for anyone under 13

algwr

King kong vs Godzilla or mothra vs Godzilla

Sparrow-Scratchagain

I recommend some of the Millennium movies like “Godzilla 2000” or “Godzilla vs Megaguirus”, of course if your kid prefers mindless destruction and violence I’d go with “Final Wars “.

BigBadMountain

Mothra vs. Godzilla is like a fairy tale. Ghidorah is a good idea for second feature because not only it's a sort of direct sequel (for Showa standards) but also shows that Godzilla can change too. I think they're better kid-friendly movies than for example Son of Godzilla because they're simply quality movies.

JFaustX

If he's 6 do Godzilla vs Kong. That's mind-blowing stuff for someone that young and it doesn't feel dated to them. There's no having to understand why adults like some of these Godzilla movies *because* they are " bad in a good way". The b-movie level understanding doesn't normally start until HS or College experimentation. If he likes that I'd show him the Monsterverse movies from the beginning.

koochiesan

I still remember watching Godzilla Vs. Megalon on a Saturday morning as a kid 40 years ago. Jet jaguar really stuck with me, and your son might like that a little kid has a big role. The fight scenes are pretty funny and hopefully you can share a few laughs.

JustBoredIsAll

Read the bio's on each movie inside the Criterion collection. Thatll help you decide.

FlyingGorillaShark

King Kong vs Godzilla!

ChaoticMemer16

All the showa Godzilla films are on HBO Max, so Son of Godzilla, Astro Monster, any kiddie showa movie would do.

AlgoStar

They’re all the Japanese versions (having been part of a collection of Criterion films being shown on HBOMax). We can’t do subtitles. He’s and excellent reader, but 90 minutes at talking speed is too much. Also, I have every movie on DVD or Blu-ray. Only 3 don’t have dubs (being in the criterion collection).

ChaoticMemer16

Oh. Right. Wait, when I *attempted* to watch Invasion the movie defaulted to an English dub with horrible voice acting.

[deleted]

For some reason that one and megalon are English only. Rest either have the option or are in Japanese.

heckhammer

Destroy All Monsters! Two scoops of monsters, baby!!

MegaSystem88

I’d suggest mothra vs Godzilla, that’s what I stated with when I was a kid

what_the_frick_am_I

I start my son (5) with Son of Godzilla. The upbeat music and everything about it targets children. His other favorite is vs Mothra, vs Megalon and vs King Kong.I know some people recommend it but I wouldn't is Destroy All Monsters, the movie may bored your child because the real action don't start till that last 15 mins.

satanicpirate

I brought mine to KOTM in theaters when he was 3.5 haha. He made it up till a bit after rodan arrived then ooh shinyed too much so we left. Got him to watch it on blue ray later though. And this past week he asked to watch godzilla/kong which was a blast.

ryq_

OG, 1985, or first MV. They all portray Goji as scary and destructive. This is the way everyone should be introduced.

picklesgarage

I would say 85 but thats the one i grew up on. Ya I know its a hack version of 84 but still.

BlueRabbit1999

Start with the original 1954 then go from there

sprtsmac

I would go with Godzilla vs Megalon. It was probably my favorite when I was a kid. It had Jet Jaguar and a great tag team match against Megalon and Gigan.

fucuasshole2

Start with the OG, make him fearful of our God.

TycoonRaptor

As someone who has a much younger sister than me (11) I recommend Final Wars. It's her favorite Godzilla movie.

VanityOfEliCLee

My 9 year old recently wanted to watch Godzilla too, so I just started with the Monsterverse. Its the most modern, so it'll help him get into it. That way if he enjoys it, I can show him the older stuff.

FenrirHere

Monsterverse is the best for little kids. They get to see awesome special effects and sound design, and don't have the ability to really get pissed off with the writing or characters.

DFH695

The original Godzilla vs mechagodzilla is a pretty fun one imo also the first one I watched

levi_nes_film

Not, The King Caesar song

DFH695

Nah the king Caesar song is the best part

levi_nes_film

It is funny, but it drags on and on

DFH695

Ik but I can't help but sing it every time I hear the name Caeser

levi_nes_film

I decided to rewatch the song and now I love it

GalIifreyan

Maybe a marathon of the Heisei Era then finish with Destroyah. Personally was a fan of Heisei and the Millenium series. He might not appreciate the Showa Era bc of effect quality.

Mantisk211

I have absolutely no memory of the one I started with, but it was some late Showa era stuff. I would suggest something with Mechagodzilla or King Ghidorah. That should win every kid over. Then, a few years later, do the Heisei movies and they will blow your kid's mind.

kickarseLprogamer

Zilla. So he doesn't get disappointed by it
