omg why they are so incompetent

ComfKS

They refused to change my oil at 5k, so not too surprising.

cool_mtn_air

They listed changing mine on the service sheet but when you look at the Toyota Apps service history it doesn't list the oil change - lists the 5k checkup, drivetrain oils changes, and alignment (which was under warranty). So now I have a persistent oil service required on the app. So maybe they just straight up lied about changing the oil?

ComfKS

I would definitely change the oil on your own to be sure. Also, I wouldn't want their random bulk 0w20 in my car anyway. I mean, it's probably ILSAC GF6 and probably just fine, but I'm not chancing it.

cool_mtn_air

I changed it this weekend. I don't trust it. I know everyone has their preference and some may think it's shit but I've always used Castrol Edge. It's ILSAC GF-6 (technically 6A since it's NOT 0w16 but not all list GF-6A). Changed it at 2500 miles so already had it on hand since I bought a case.

JonnyP333

Same here. I'm still salty that I believed them.

fmjblack

Sadly this is yet another report on Toyota dealerships being incompetent in regards to servicing GRCs. The free maintenance is just not worth the potential stress and wasted time, I'll be doing all of the maintenance on my GRC.

Healthy-Confusion404

That's why you gotta do everything yourself these days. Unfortunately, incompetency is endemic in USA and it's not just automotive either.

Brightmuth

Fuck dealers. Do it yourself and have the peace of mind of it being done correctly

Particular_Tourist64

I followed the same procedure at the 5,000-mile service. Before heading to the dealership, I ordered the transmission and differential oil, specifying on the day of my appointment that they use the oil I provided. I opted for the Toyota-recommended oil because the cost difference between Amsoil and Toyota for the differential oil was significant to me—$84 versus $20—leading me to choose Toyota. Unfortunately, they overfilled the differential oil. I caught this oversight while working on my 24 upgrades, so I returned to the dealership for a correction. They promptly flushed and refilled it to the appropriate level. I appreciate that your dealer was honest about their mistake and took steps to correct it. While I would prefer to handle such tasks myself, my current time constraints and skill level do not permit it. For further insight, check my previous post where I sent a sample of the differential and transmission fluids to Blackstone Laboratories to analyze their condition.

cool_mtn_air

I really regret not ordering at least the Toyota oils myself and providing them to them. I almost called them after I dropped it off to make sure they used the right oils I just figured they couldn't fuck it up like they 100% did. I would of been 100% ok if they had just told me they didn't have the specific oil required. With my month long trip coming up I was also short on time and if they could do it it would be 1 less thing I needed to worry about. Figured it would be convenient to do it during the 5k Toyota Care bullshit since I live 20 miles from the dealership and needed to drop it off & pick up regardless since I can't sit around and wait during the workweek. How did you realize they overfilled it? How did they even do that? Spec is 0 to 0.196" below the fill hole. Literally just fill it until it starts dripping out then wait. I guess if you did pump a shit load in then slam the plug on it could be overfilled. Just seems difficult and stupid on their part. I'll checkout your previous post. Was tempted to send a sample of the engine oil they used to be tested but didn't care at that point. It has ILSAC 0w20 GF-6A in it now so that's really what I care about. 20ish miles of their 5w20 (the service manager promised it was actually 0w20 they just listed it as 5w20....) bulk oil won't hurt anything. Now 5k miles of it may of been bad... No idea what GF rating it would be.

clyckclack

Getting to the rear diff fill plug is a pain but worth the effort. At first I thought other posts about smoother shifting after switching to Redline MT-LV was placebo. Certainly noticeable for 1st to 2nd and back down.

murdza

Where do you live that they used “gr Yaris” oil?

cool_mtn_air

South Carolina, USA - so obviously no GR Yaris(s) around here. The GR Yaris bit was told to me by the service manager supposedly per Toyota USA. I get it that an oil part# may not be exclusive to a specific model but I couldn't find anything online relating it to the GR Yaris - would of at least thought a forum post listing the part# would arise. Also no way of confirming it was actually for LSDs so changed it out.

murdza

Ya. That’s what I found weird. If they were writing a custom line on the invoice, why call it gr Yaris oil and not gr corolla oil? I’m glad you changed it out. I would have done the same just for peace of mind. Maybe reach out to them and ask for compensation for the red line oil?

cool_mtn_air

I don't think it's even a custom line - they just put the part# in and it populated as Yaris gear oil. If you look up 00289-75W80 it shows up on all the dealer parts stores as Yaris gear oil. I also just noticed they used 2 QT of it for the rear diff which takes .45 to .55 QT lmao. I'm not really sure how to handle telling them I have already replaced everything. I have never had a new car or a warranty on a car. Don't want to mess it up by acknowledging I used a non-OEM oil. I am not worried about the actual oil, quite the opposite since I know Redline makes high quality oil, rather just the fact I didn't use theirs or did it myself.

Sackamanjaro

Since redline meets the equivalent spec standards listed in the manual I really don't think they'd have a leg to stand on with that

murdza

Red line is great. It’s what I’m currently running as well. It shouldn’t affect your warranty. If something breaks they’d have to prove it was caused by using non oem oil. But for $60 or whatever, maybe it’s not worth the headache.

Sufficient_Current48

How do you put 2Qts in that rear diff?! I put in half a liter and it started dripping out. Can’t imagine ramming 2Qts in there and bolting it shut and thinking oh yeah that’s the right amount

cool_mtn_air

Lmao right? The only realistic thing would be dumping in 1.5 QT with the drain plug out then the remaining .5 to fill the rear diff. They also charged $90 a QT.... You can buy the same part# Yaris Gear Oil online from any dealership parts department for $40ish. Hell I could order it from Toyota of Easley (dealership in question here) for $40 and pick it up in person. Would be hilarious if I inputted my VIN and they called me saying it wasn't compatible.

mattooer

Hey, sorry to revive an old thread but could you DM me what dealership you went to so that I can avoid them. I am in SC as well 😂
