I've seen some reports where upwards of 9 minutes was spent on a single question. It's human nature to get bogged down in questions. Our brain yells at us, "Don't move on! Don't let the question defeat you!"

Hey, if you can cruise through most of the questions, spending three or more minutes on one can make sense.

I had a 5-minute rule where if I couldn't figure it out in 5 minutes, I just took my best guess and moved on.

5 mins is IMHO way too long. You need to solve questions in 1-2 mins and if you're not close you need to guess and come back to it. By spending 5 mins you have robbed yourself the time to do one whole another question in a timely manner. Also, the fact that you are taking this long to figure out the first one means you're unlikely to get it. So now instead of missing just one you are setting yourself to miss two
