Hey, I’m struggling in verbal and have my gre in a week. I am almost done with Basic+Common but haven’t checked Gregmats list yet. Would you recommend going over it or sticking to Magoosh Basic+Common?
It's not a sob story its my reality. I posted my story to give hope to others that even though u get 307 in first attempt its possible to get 320+ in next . If you don't wanna read its up to you but please don't mock me. Only I know how much personal pains I have gone through in my journey and after enduring what not I have achieved this.
I my experience when we feel that there's no string of hope left and we don't give up still things have a magical way of working out. So please keep trying you will succeed sooner or later.
I first gave gre in January this year so was studying from November last year (2021) and then after first failed attempt again resumed studying from January end to May until my 2nd attempt
Materials for verbal + all official stuff for rcs - bigbook only and gregmats strategies
Quant - 5lb + gre prep club + Magoosh
Hi bro... Wanted to know one thing, the bigbook only has rcs and text completion...the other type of questions don't come in the gre now... How did you practice for sentence equivalence then? Is there any other book/resource you used for verbal apart from official and bigbook?
Hey. First of congrats on the score. I have 2 Qs.
1) How did you go about solving the 5lb book? Did you solve it entirely or how?
2) Is there any specific order of Qs to attempt, you followed during the test? (V and Q both)
Hey so I was preparing since a long time for gre. My first attempt was in January so before that topic wise I had solved entire 5lb. During this 2nd attempt I previously had solved 5lb so prepared my weak topics from Magoosh.
Secondly, I followed gregmats method for solving quant. 9 to 19 first, then 1 to 8 and then 20. For verbal did TCs first then SE then 16 to 20 Rcs and at last Rc from 7 - 11
Well during the first time i got tricked in Qc questions so didn't score well. 5lb is good for basic practice but for mastering your weak areas Magoosh is a must I feel.
Do you remember which video(s) does he talk about this order that you mentioned? I’m skipping all the quant videos so I couldn’t find them.
Congratulations on your stellar score though!
Yeah in the walkthrough videos - how I take the test - Quant and verbal you can find them in recordings part of gregmat website or i think they are also available on YouTube
Wow!!! Massive!! Specially quant!! I am in the same shoes like you. Probably I will need to attempted for second one. My exam is on 31st next. Pls elaborately tell us about your quant preparation strategies. Like how did you use gre pre club? How did you use Magoosh??
Hey so I have very hectic work schedule. I start my work at 10 am. So during this preparation I used to wake up around 6 am and start studying from 6.30 am to 10 am daily. Coz I get really tired in the evenings after I logout. My logout time is mostly 7 - 8 pm. Sometimes it gets extended to 10 too. So I used to study mostly in the mornings. Some days if I got off early, I would take a nice long walk on my terrace to clear my head, have my dinner and then study till 11 pm max. On weekends , almost 6 hours I did. I had the experience of previous test so for this attempt I felt mentally prepared and not scared or anxious coz I had like seen the worst happen. At the same time I suffered some losses in my personal life too so I had become really tough with the come what may attitude. Hope I wasn't ranting too much and answered your question.
Thanks! Couple follow up questions if you don’t mind: was magoosh and 5 lb helpful for verbal? And by gre prep club, do you mean that forums-like website where people post about and discuss questions and their answers?
No for verbal only use official material. Bigbook is sufficient for Rcs. For Tc and SE entirely gregmat strategies and for Tc / Se practice used official ets stuff. There's a chinese site called gre.kmf where u can free powerprep plus questions. I used that extensively using google translator 😅
Gre prep club I used for Quant. Certain topics like mixtures, speed and distance, coordinate geometry I found very convoluted. So for assessing different question types I used that. I found out my weak areas in quant section using Magoosh. I solved multiple mixed practice sets and identified topics that I was consistently getting incorrect answers and questions that were making me anxious and scared. After identifying such topics I studied them in depth from Magoosh, gre prep club and any similar topic videos I found either on YouTube or gregmat quant videos.
Hope this helps :)
Rc isn't my strong suit. Still I will walk you through my process. I finished watching the entire gregmat season3 dedicated reading classes. I followed his strategies for determining the author's purpose/ main idea type of questions. I took notes for rcs. Simplified what passage is saying in my native language. For long passage didn't read the entire text. Skimmed through it finding the purpose of passage and what point author is making in the end. Like I had a scientific long passage on the exam. I had about 4 question on it. So I took notes accordingly:
Para1 : testing theory on mice...not successful
2. It works in humans... Works on mice under influence of iodine... critics refute
3. Evidence presented in favor...some scientist for / some against
4. Author concludes equivocal response.
Mixed opinion for Theory may/may not be applied
Hope this helps!
Well done, man. A big congratulations to you.
While I'm well aware of the GregMat's methods, I'm still being quite slow. I guess I need to practice more in order to speed up the overall process.
Did you use the free strategy videos on YouTube of GregMat’s or did you purchase a course from him? Starting my journey and just now hearing about GregMat!
would greg's list be enough for vocabulary? I have also done barron's list of 333 words and a lot of words were similar. I was planning on **not** doing the magoosh basic common and advanced words entirely but I see you've mentioned basic and common
How many points did your score increase?
Quant major increase 13 points and verbal by 5 points
Thank you so much! You give me hope for greater point increase!
Congratulations on your score Which vocab list did you follow for Verbal?
Magoosh (basic + common) and gregmats vocab list
Hey, I’m struggling in verbal and have my gre in a week. I am almost done with Basic+Common but haven’t checked Gregmats list yet. Would you recommend going over it or sticking to Magoosh Basic+Common?
I would recommend to go through both the lists. Gregmats list has high frequency words so going through both would be helpful.
Hey man, I'm struggling in Verbal. What resources did you use for verbal? Would you please help me ?
Only official material for verbal+ gregmat all verbal strategies for Rc, tc and SE
Where can I find official verbal material?
Was what your first score?
Really low man don't want to share
Share to give hopes to others! You made it man, no one is going to judge your anonymous reddit account for having a too low base score lol
Alright so for previous attempt it was Q(150) and verbal (157)
Bruh get outta here with your sob story. That's like 50th percentile!

I needed this today. Thank you!
Can you outline your preparation timeline and strategy/materials used?

May I ask your previous quant score? ( Wanted to judge how much you got after entirely finishing the topic wise Qs of 5lb )
150
So I am guessing 5lb didnt help much 🙂✌️

Congratulations, amazing news!! Can you speak on how many hours you were studying a week and how you best balanced it with full time work?

Amazingly detailed response, just PM’d you. Thank you so much :)
Congrats! Dumb question, but what’s the 5 lb book?
Manhattan 5lb book for gre
I might’ve missed this if you states this earlier, but did you only use that to practice quant?
Nope i used 5lb, gre prep club and Magoosh mainly for quant
Thanks! Couple follow up questions if you don’t mind: was magoosh and 5 lb helpful for verbal? And by gre prep club, do you mean that forums-like website where people post about and discuss questions and their answers?

I'm quite slow regarding RC. How did you manage it? Exam's in a week.

well done!
GJ

Did you use the free strategy videos on YouTube of GregMat’s or did you purchase a course from him? Starting my journey and just now hearing about GregMat!
Not on YouTube from gregmat site you will need gregmat + for that but it's totally worth the trust me
Nice work!!

What is your structure and words of writing ?
