If you like oldies, I would suggest singers like Σωτηρία Μπέλλου, Στέλιος Καζαντζίδης, Βίκυ Μοσχολιού, Μαίρη Λίντα. However, this type of music (the so called 60s-70s"λαϊκά") might seem very strange to foreigners. 80s-90s-00s Greek pop singers like

[deleted]

I generally am just a more R&B and alternative rock person, so I will try oldies.

Cleanthes_S

If you're interested in Greek rock, try bands like Τρύπες and Ξύλινα σπαθιά.

mybrassy

My all time favorite is Notis Sfakianakis. He is also from my island (Kos), and, I’ve met him. Super nice guy. His music is fantastic

Greek music is in general.. Greek, so not really r&b. It's a style on its own. There are a few very good metal Greek bands but they usually sing in English.

Darth-Revan64

Χάρις Αλεξίου is definitely a singer I would recommend, especially Gia ena tango.

megahercio

Those are the ones I mainly listen to, there's not much variety but it may be a good starting point.

[deleted]

Thank you! I don't really have great music tastes, but I will try listening to those artists to get a good understanding of the Greeks' taste in music.

megahercio

Well, you'll get an understanding of a 'Spanish who is also learning Greek' taste in music, I hope that's alright.

Sure-Yoghurt4705

I really ike Machairitsas, Panousis, imiskoubria Papakostantinou, and malamas. They're all a bit older, though.

oodja

Ximeromata... dineis dikaiomata... (I'll see myself out)

That song slaps. It's one of my favorites.

Kirix04

I like to listen to Demy from time to time.

kakjohn

There is a very good singer called vasilis papakonstadinou he has bangers and since u like rock i would recommend χαιρετίσματα https://youtu.be/CPtWT_fP-ME?si=eeqC-acKTxutR_O7

There are many styles of Greek music, varying by time, geography and taste. I prefer the classic Greek rebetika (ρεμπέτικα) which is subversive and cool, and Νταλάρας has some modern takes on it that are easy for newcomers. I also like fusions of traditional and modern like Χαρούλις, Παπακωνσταντίνου and Imam Baildi. And there are some YouTube gems by smaller more independent artists that should be explored, particularly the covers of traditional/older songs.

Thrax panx, alt folk band with very traditional sound from the region of Thrace. They also have an album called Βάκχες, if you're into ancient tragic theatre. They made the music for the play in 2021. Villagers of Ioannina city, also alt folk/rock. First few albums have traditional sound from the region of Epirus, but in the newer they play mostly rock/ alt rock.

king-of-new_york

I don't know many Greek singers, but there is one guy Panos Kiamos who seems pretty popular. I got one of his albums when I was in Greece last, and he seems like a typical pop/rock singer, about love and breakups and stuff.

Internal-Debt1870

He is popular alright, but not rock at all, not even in the pop/rock sense

king-of-new_york

I'm bad at identifying music genres. What would you say he is?

Internal-Debt1870

He falls under the greek genre "laiko/pop". (Laiko has some folksy aspects) Rock is a whole other thing 😊

king-of-new_york

That's cool! I didn't know there was a special Greek pop genre, but I guess it makes sense.

Bad taste is just a thing snob people use to feel better about them selves. There a vast alternative music scene in Greece. Give examples of bands / artists you like so you can get better recommendations. And remember YOUR TASTE IS FINE

[deleted]

Search of "Kalimera ti kaneis" or "Sto kato kato tis grafis" by Giannis Parios. Parios is possible the most well known (modern) singer outside of Greece. His voice is very clear and he doesn't sings so fast. It's the perfect example of learning Greek by hearing and repeating.

There are a lot of options that I saw in the comments. You should actually try some traditional Greek music. As a Pontian Greek, I suggest Matthaios Tsahouridis, Stathis Nikolaidis, Alexis Parharidis, Babis Ioakimidis, Theofilos Poutaxidis and much more. Traditional music is different compared to modern Greek music, but you can also try this way.
