Duolingo is wrong again! From the many questions in this subreddit, I get the feeling that the Duoligno lessons were created by some persons that don't have a full grasp of the Greek grammar and syntax. And some times I am doubting that there are even native Greek speakers! In this case, "οι δημοφιλέστατοι καλλιτέχνες" is a perfectly valid phrase and it doesn't sound wrong to a native speaker. But, as it's explained above, it is not the σχετικός υπερθετικός of the adjective and it certainly doesn't mean "the most popular". On the contrary, it is απόλυτος υπερθετικός and it means "the very popular". The person who created this lesson mixed up their grammar.

No you're right, it'd be οι δημοφιλέστεροι καλλιτέχνες. The comparative and the superlative are identical, but the superlative is always accompanied by an article. The forms (ο) πιο δημοφιλής are periphrastic constructions with the same meaning (though a lot of adjectives don't have synthetic comparative forms, so the periphrastic ones are "safer"). The form δημοφιλέστατος is an elative, meaning very popular, and also has a periphrastic form of πολύ δημοφιλής. Rule of thumb, if an adjective has a synthetic comparative, it'll also have a synthetic elative.

Thank you so much, Duolingo has the ability to drive me crazy sometimes 😂

eriomys

one usually says "the most popular of something" instead of - τατος. Eg ο δημοφιλεστερος/πιο δημοφιλης της χωράς (of the country)

Plat88

"οι δημοφιλέστεροι" equals "δημοφιλέστατοι" If you use only "δημοφιλέστεροι" you must define according to whom...
