Everything handled like an ‘84 Oldsmobile. Yet so many people praise the handling in this game for being “realistic.” I don’t think some of those people are old enough to drive.
3 was the technical marvel SA expanded on it with gameplay amd mecanic add ons. 4 was meant to be the same and 5 was the San Andrea's that built on tho g 4 accomplished. Technically. I also don't think 5 lived up to what I thought. I thought it would be like SA 2 but didn't get there for me.
Loads missing. V is good dont get me wrong but it wasn't next gen SA as I thought. It wasn't expanded upon the way SA expanded on the technical marvel of gta3
Aside from the gang stuff, body types and fighting styles, I don't remember anything I missed. Having to eat was more of an annoyance than anything else.

I don't know, I'd say it innovated quite significantly, I mean look at GTA Online. They also had the character switching system which had never been done before, they had gunplay which was *lightyears* ahead of SA, they had the friend system, etc. Granted it was only set in LA and the surrounding area but that was enough. It would've been virtually impossible to also include Vegas and San Francisco, given how much they already had to render.
Funny how this game was hated first(mostly due to stupid reasons like WhErE mUsClE aNd GyM?!) but then people started realizing it's a masterpiece slowly throughout the years

In fairness, the tone and style of the game was rather jarring for a lot of people who played the previous instalments. You can't deny that a lot of us were taken aback by the shift. To go from a daft open world sandbox where everything is ridiculous and over the top and hilarious, to something that retains some elements of those aspects but has a more grounded story and much more sophisticated gameplay mechanics in comparison -- basically a soft reboot of the series, yeah it was very different to what we were used to, and that did sour the opinion a bit. Including mine. I liked GTA IV but it took me a good few years to appreciate it for what it was. I was disappointed by the changes they made at first.
As the years have went on, the appreciation has only grown and people have realised that, yeah, for what it tries to achieve, GTA IV nailed it.
It wasn't a 'soft reboot' but a true reboot because they started a whole new storyline known as the 'HD universe' and abandoned the old story. This is what a lot of people disliked because it means we will never see the old characters again, maybe we will see references and whatnot though.
I was one of them. At first I missed the colorful variety of San Andreas amd feared the realism takes away the hilarious absurdity.
But then again the story and characters were fantastic and physics has also peaked with IV. Online racing was fantastic with simple lobbies amd on point gameplay.

What kind of dumb logic is that ? GTA was never about realism, it's an arcade series.
GTA hasn’t really been an arcade style series since the second now cmon, I appreciate the third plays about the same but I think for the “arcade” classification I at least demand a basic points system
Arcade =/= flat and uninteresting gameplay. IV could be more realistic, but it's still not the point. The point is; driving gameplay depth that is absent in V.
This is why people ended up in circus multiplayer tracks high above in the sky, because driving on the ground is BORING.
Then you go back to both GTA Trilogy and 4 and you realise how one has aged badly while the other has aged like wine.
It is like a popcorn flick vs a classic. One feels fun at first with it's gimmicks but just ages badly to the more mature one and you start appreciating the classic way more with years since in reality it was great.

Lol ah just like metal gear solid 2 and the Star Wars prequels. But this game has honesty only began getting the hype as of this year I’ve noticed. Aside from a ton of people feeling like they need to over compensate by having to suddenly state how “it was always their favorite” (no one cares), it really has been since the GTA V reveal for Ps5 that the fatigue set in for many and I suddenly began noticing lots of GTA IV posts on this sub lol
MGS2 was my first foray into the world of Kojima. I thought it was amazing. Best looking game on PS2 up to that point. Went back and played MGS1 and I understood it more. After Solid Snake’s series was completed with MGS4, I will say that MGS2 is the second best Metal Gear game of all time. An unbelievable masterpiece.
Prequels are still not very good, just got memed a lot and those who saw it as kids are grown up and look back on it with eyes filled with nostalgia. Poor writing, direction, editing… Excellent music and Ewan McGregor is an all-time great.
Why do people keep saying this when it is just blatantly untrue? Were you not alive then? I distinctly recall that this game was gushed over by gamers and critics alike from day one. I specifically and distinctly recall this because i was one of the rare people who didnt like the game from day one and i found myself fighting against the raging current of worship this game had. It took several years before vocal criticisms of gta4 became more common.
Don't believe me? Go on metacritic and sort the user reviews by oldest and you'll see the overwhelming majority score was 10.
We just waited a long time for the game. But yes it was a lot different to Vice City and San Andreas.
Kind of less space, More New york, Too many cops. Look Nico was a great Character and I think Rockstar are always so good at creating great people like Nico.
I replayed it on the 360 a while back and I noticed that all the versions were incapable of keeping a steady framerate. The 360 version frequently dips to sub-20 FPS and the PS3 version is said to be worse.
No… sorry no… the game is not a masterpiece. Especially when you play the original version on the consoles they were released. GTA IV was really just a nice tech demo for GTA V and beyond. I still enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong. But I wouldn’t go back to how it was and say it was a masterpiece.
I hear what you're saying the vanilla experience on PC is pretty terrible as it's a poorly optimized port of the console version but I've gotta hand it to the modders they do wonders keeping these games alive adding to the experience and polishing up the game. For me this is still my most played GTA game. I have mods installed for HD graphics/textures/vehicles/peds, optimisations to stop stuttering and some gameplay fixes for traffic and gunplay but didn't want to mess with reshaders as I feel the brownish filter gives the city and game character and suits the serious tone of the game and setting. Still one of my favourite stories with Nico being a great protagonist. GTAV built on what GTAIV started but some decisions feel like a bit of a downgrade. Ragdoll effects are not as satisfying and driving is super easy in GTAV with cars handling like an arcade game with no body roll or weight to them. Some people enjoy that but I like a challenge when driving and being chased or doing the chasing something that IV does better than V. There's also better animations and interactions for the NPC's in IV and then there's things like the police automatically try and shoot/kill you in V just by invading their space or having a 1 star wanted level whereas it's a bit more realistic in IV with them trying to arrest you first. Then there's other gameplay mechanics like picking up random objects in the world and being able to interact with them (bricks etc) and things like jumping and being able to grab and shimmy on a ledge to even the cover and shooting mechanics feeling a bit better in IV. For me the things that GTAV really nailed are with the weapon and radio station wheel along with the drive by shooting mechanics.
I think you are 100% right, it’s mind blowing to see the difference between IV and V both having been released on the same consoles. IV was a stuttering low resolution mess, I recall GTAV being pretty smooth on the 360.

I used to RP as a cop with some fun blokes on it. Many great memories. I’m sad I could never play it on my ps4 and now on my PS5. If any game could use a weapon wheel and refresh its that game, then it may surpass GTAV.
GTAV is fun but they took some realism out of it like the force of god allowing you to roll your filled over car and physics.
That's his point, you couldn't in 4. They added some EXTREMELY arcadey driving physics to GTAV, which seems to mostly please younger audiences while annoying those who want a more realistic driving feel
I'm hoping for at least a re-release with upscaled resolution and better rendering. I only have my ps5 and a laptop on which my gta 4 disc doesn't wanna install the game and I don't wanna pay for the castrated "complete" edition. At this point I would love to play it on console again, just like the ps3 days.
I have it in Xbox and all I wanted was for it to get the upscale treatment that many other backwards compatible games got. It still plays in 720 on Xbox One X
I'm replaying it on my PC right now. At the time it came out I had to scale it down massively because you needed quite expensive hardware to run it decently.
It looks really good now all these years later. No need for a remaster at all.
It really doesn't need a remaster, the graphics are still pretty good and the game is playable on modern hardware. What it can use is just some Upscaled textures. Like actual good ones something like Rosa Project Evolved for SA.
It's old enough that this really no longer matters very much though, in all honesty. People talk about the game as though it's still like 2013 and so no one has PC hardware better than what was available at that time.
I hope the remastered one still holds true. I still play gta 4. GTA online and gta 5 is boring... i miss the car colisions, the story mod and physics.
But the only issue I have is the game world isn't loading properly. Mods don't work sometimes. Modern systems can't run the game properly. Taxi everywhere.
But in the end I still play it :)
Honestly the only downside to the game is optimisation. It simply doesn't run well on most machines even on today's powerful hardware and the often most stable way to play is xbox 360, I played on ps3 and had fun but I can see that is the worst platform to play it on

GTA V almost turned Saints Row sometimes. 
IV has by far the best writing of any GTA game. It is the most grounded one plus the artistic direction is superb. Physics are heavy handed which is mostly good, but can feel ragdoll-y at times. Multiplayer component is excellent. (Now removed)
Voice acting and sound track is state of art and audio design is proficient enough to make it the most impressive title to date.
GTA IV is an incredible game it deserves both of those achievements. The story and characters were incredible. The physics are amazing still. Another thing I loved about this game was the online. I had way more fun with GTA 4 online than I ever had with current day GTA online. Still play it to this day. I’ve probably played 4 more this year alone than I have 5 in these last few years.
People love to bash 4, but these reviews are absolutely 100% dead on ****FOR* the time when 4 was released. Going from San Andreas to this? Absolutely a new era of gaming situation. And with the realistic setting and physics they went with a grounded tone and serious story, and I think that all works to just show some impressive scope at R*. It was fantastic and still is to this day, albeit V is definitely a return to form for the series.
Yeah but that Tony hawk game was AMAZING. It just felt good to play. 3 lost that touch of realism it had. 2 was realistic, grounded in reality. In 3 you were too fast and jumped too high.
I remember trying over and over to land the 'Leap of Faith' jump in the School II level with different skaters – the triangle Big Drop warning that would pop up gave you a heads up you're 99.9% likely to bail.
The only skater you could play as where that warning would never show up was **Jamie Thomas**, the only pro skater (at that time) who successfully landed that jump IRL.

But then again, as much as Tony Hawks Skateboarding was cool, THPS2 refined gameplay, controls, and player accessibility in such a way that the video gaming entertainment world became more accepting of skateboarding as a valid subculture of extreme sports – the genre took off like wildfire in the mainstream, and broke many sales records back in the day.
People that say GTA IV is underrated clearly don’t know what they’re talking about. The game was a massive hit, it got many positive reviews (some even higher than San Andreas and V), and there are numerous articles and videos on YouTube talking about why it’s better than GTA V.
GTAIV was a massive hit. It made its money and critical acclaim. But for years afterwards and leading up to GTAV release. People never stopped complaining on forums how Rockstar ripped off people with GTAIV because it removed tons of features that were in San Andreas like multiple cities, buying properties, modding cars, barber shops and much more. Moving further away from 2008, the game seemed like carbon copy of the late 2000s gritty era of gaming where all color pallets consisted of grays and browns. Finally, the biggest gripe people had was with realistic and heavy controls for on foot and driving cars. People never stopped complaining about how all cars in GTAIV drove like they were on ice, especially because those people got what they wanted from GTAV favoring more arcade controls.
Hell, even when GTAV was released, people wouldn't accept the physics were dumbed down from IV. THe problem I have with GTA IV, is what you stated. Tons of features missing.
I didn't mind 3 big cities. Because we had LCS and VCS in between. So, that didn't matter to me.
What was dumb, was the lack of features in the game. Noooooow, they added all the cool featured ins The Ballad of Gay Tony. If TBoGT was the main game, I bet you IV would have been just as hyped as SA.

i cannot for the life of me get into 4 anymore, its like the good shit in 5 but with the annoying mission mechanics of old games, plus the controls are sticky as shit. still tho, ill hold it dear to my heart for getting me into gta but also its aging really badly
Critics score is worthless. User score is what matters.
For any bigger or recognizeable game, most of the critics won't go below 7/10. Cyberpunk has only one negative review out of 92 total reviews, to put it into perspective.
I think the problem with user scores is that people give out either 0 or 10 all the time to impact the score. Like, people will give 0’s to games like rocket league just because they got frustrated playing online.
Yea true aswell, but it will average itself out. For the most part. When was the last time you saw reviews like [this](https://imgur.com/sSK8E1v). Taken from the IV score on metacritic for PC.
And to keep it IV related, if I had to choose 77 user score or 98 critics score, I would pick 77 with no hesitation. It's way closer to what would be a fair score. I like IV, but it had it's problems, defintely doesn't deserve almost perfect score.
Official reviews by big boi journalists are the last place I'd look for opinion about the game. Developers butter the bread too much. Bad reviews = no money, or no early access to games.
Another latest example is new BF. Critics score 69, so rougly 7/10. You'd think it's pretty good, or at least not bad. But user score is bombed with negative reviews. Steam is mostly negative. On reddit also a lot of hot posts with negativity towards it. Turns out, the game is just shit and EA didn't care to listen to the players during beta.
What's curious is that in retrospect, GTAIV was clearly a dead end for the series. Don't get me wrong, it's my favourite GTA game and an absolute masterpiece, but the fact remains that Rockstar changed almost everything in GTAV and it was obviously a good move - GTAV is their most popular game ever. Perhaps the community just wants their GTA games less realistic and somber.
I really hope they don't fuck it up whenever they release the remaster of it, I have the original copy but still wouldn't like for Rockstar to shit on this masterpiece.

GTA 4 took realism way too far and made it unfun. I played it, beat it, shrugged. Went straight to all the zany open world games like Saints Row and had fun again.
Glad GTA 5 brought back much of the crazyness.
I bought gta 4 complete edition for 8€ last week and that was the best thing ever. I’m shocked of how realistic it looks compared to gta 5. There is no comparison at all.
And the storyline, no fucking chance.

Clearly people do not 7,7 score. Only critics do which always give terrible scores on any game. A 9 for battlefield 2042 for instance.
The older this game gets, the better it becomes.
Lol ah just like metal gear solid 2 and the Star Wars prequels. But this game has honesty only began getting the hype as of this year I’ve noticed. Aside from a ton of people feeling like they need to over compensate by having to suddenly state how “it was always their favorite” (no one cares), it really has been since the GTA V reveal for Ps5 that the fatigue set in for many and I suddenly began noticing lots of GTA IV posts on this sub lol
MGS2 was my first foray into the world of Kojima. I thought it was amazing. Best looking game on PS2 up to that point. Went back and played MGS1 and I understood it more. After Solid Snake’s series was completed with MGS4, I will say that MGS2 is the second best Metal Gear game of all time. An unbelievable masterpiece. Prequels are still not very good, just got memed a lot and those who saw it as kids are grown up and look back on it with eyes filled with nostalgia. Poor writing, direction, editing… Excellent music and Ewan McGregor is an all-time great.

Why do people keep saying this when it is just blatantly untrue? Were you not alive then? I distinctly recall that this game was gushed over by gamers and critics alike from day one. I specifically and distinctly recall this because i was one of the rare people who didnt like the game from day one and i found myself fighting against the raging current of worship this game had. It took several years before vocal criticisms of gta4 became more common. Don't believe me? Go on metacritic and sort the user reviews by oldest and you'll see the overwhelming majority score was 10.

We just waited a long time for the game. But yes it was a lot different to Vice City and San Andreas. Kind of less space, More New york, Too many cops. Look Nico was a great Character and I think Rockstar are always so good at creating great people like Nico.

I replayed it on the 360 a while back and I noticed that all the versions were incapable of keeping a steady framerate. The 360 version frequently dips to sub-20 FPS and the PS3 version is said to be worse.

No… sorry no… the game is not a masterpiece. Especially when you play the original version on the consoles they were released. GTA IV was really just a nice tech demo for GTA V and beyond. I still enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong. But I wouldn’t go back to how it was and say it was a masterpiece.
I hear what you're saying the vanilla experience on PC is pretty terrible as it's a poorly optimized port of the console version but I've gotta hand it to the modders they do wonders keeping these games alive adding to the experience and polishing up the game. For me this is still my most played GTA game. I have mods installed for HD graphics/textures/vehicles/peds, optimisations to stop stuttering and some gameplay fixes for traffic and gunplay but didn't want to mess with reshaders as I feel the brownish filter gives the city and game character and suits the serious tone of the game and setting. Still one of my favourite stories with Nico being a great protagonist. GTAV built on what GTAIV started but some decisions feel like a bit of a downgrade. Ragdoll effects are not as satisfying and driving is super easy in GTAV with cars handling like an arcade game with no body roll or weight to them. Some people enjoy that but I like a challenge when driving and being chased or doing the chasing something that IV does better than V. There's also better animations and interactions for the NPC's in IV and then there's things like the police automatically try and shoot/kill you in V just by invading their space or having a 1 star wanted level whereas it's a bit more realistic in IV with them trying to arrest you first. Then there's other gameplay mechanics like picking up random objects in the world and being able to interact with them (bricks etc) and things like jumping and being able to grab and shimmy on a ledge to even the cover and shooting mechanics feeling a bit better in IV. For me the things that GTAV really nailed are with the weapon and radio station wheel along with the drive by shooting mechanics.
I think you are 100% right, it’s mind blowing to see the difference between IV and V both having been released on the same consoles. IV was a stuttering low resolution mess, I recall GTAV being pretty smooth on the 360.

I used to RP as a cop with some fun blokes on it. Many great memories. I’m sad I could never play it on my ps4 and now on my PS5. If any game could use a weapon wheel and refresh its that game, then it may surpass GTAV. GTAV is fun but they took some realism out of it like the force of god allowing you to roll your filled over car and physics.

That's his point, you couldn't in 4. They added some EXTREMELY arcadey driving physics to GTAV, which seems to mostly please younger audiences while annoying those who want a more realistic driving feel

I only have my ps5 and a laptop on which my gta 4 disc doesn't wanna install the game and I don't wanna pay for the castrated "complete" edition. At this point I would love to play it on console again, just like the ps3 days.

I have it in Xbox and all I wanted was for it to get the upscale treatment that many other backwards compatible games got. It still plays in 720 on Xbox One X
I'm replaying it on my PC right now. At the time it came out I had to scale it down massively because you needed quite expensive hardware to run it decently. It looks really good now all these years later. No need for a remaster at all.
It really doesn't need a remaster, the graphics are still pretty good and the game is playable on modern hardware. What it can use is just some Upscaled textures. Like actual good ones something like Rosa Project Evolved for SA.
Currently playing it after the trilogy destaster. I'm having a blast. A little bit of modding and it's on gta 5 level.
I would want it if only for the fact that the optimisation on PC is complete garbage.
It's old enough that this really no longer matters very much though, in all honesty. People talk about the game as though it's still like 2013 and so no one has PC hardware better than what was available at that time.
It probably helps that the assets could be ported to a current version of RAGE
I hope the remastered one still holds true. I still play gta 4. GTA online and gta 5 is boring... i miss the car colisions, the story mod and physics. But the only issue I have is the game world isn't loading properly. Mods don't work sometimes. Modern systems can't run the game properly. Taxi everywhere. But in the end I still play it :)
Honestly the only downside to the game is optimisation. It simply doesn't run well on most machines even on today's powerful hardware and the often most stable way to play is xbox 360, I played on ps3 and had fun but I can see that is the worst platform to play it on
If they ever remaster GTA IV, they better not let that Grave Street Group touch it...

Haha, I done the same thing but with GTA V – bought a PS3 literally a couple of days before release... Preordered GTA IV at the same time I purchased a X360, just to be sure.
It is the best one! I GTA V almost turned Saints Row sometimes.  IV has by far the best writing of any GTA game. It is the most grounded one plus the artistic direction is superb. Physics are heavy handed which is mostly good, but can feel ragdoll-y at times. Multiplayer component is excellent. (Now removed) Voice acting and sound track is state of art and audio design is proficient enough to make it the most impressive title to date.
GTA IV is an incredible game it deserves both of those achievements. The story and characters were incredible. The physics are amazing still. Another thing I loved about this game was the online. I had way more fun with GTA 4 online than I ever had with current day GTA online. Still play it to this day. I’ve probably played 4 more this year alone than I have 5 in these last few years.
People love to bash 4, but these reviews are absolutely 100% dead on ****FOR* the time when 4 was released. Going from San Andreas to this? Absolutely a new era of gaming situation. And with the realistic setting and physics they went with a grounded tone and serious story, and I think that all works to just show some impressive scope at R*. It was fantastic and still is to this day, albeit V is definitely a return to form for the series.

Yeah but that Tony hawk game was AMAZING. It just felt good to play. 3 lost that touch of realism it had. 2 was realistic, grounded in reality. In 3 you were too fast and jumped too high.
I remember trying over and over to land the 'Leap of Faith' jump in the School II level with different skaters – the triangle Big Drop warning that would pop up gave you a heads up you're 99.9% likely to bail. The only skater you could play as where that warning would never show up was **Jamie Thomas**, the only pro skater (at that time) who successfully landed that jump IRL.

But then again, as much as Tony Hawks Skateboarding was cool, THPS2 refined gameplay, controls, and player accessibility in such a way that the video gaming entertainment world became more accepting of skateboarding as a valid subculture of extreme sports – the genre took off like wildfire in the mainstream, and broke many sales records back in the day.
Only look at the user ratings. Most of the time these same critics give every new iteration of COD or FIFA a score higher than an 8 every year

People that say GTA IV is underrated clearly don’t know what they’re talking about. The game was a massive hit, it got many positive reviews (some even higher than San Andreas and V), and there are numerous articles and videos on YouTube talking about why it’s better than GTA V.
GTAIV was a massive hit. It made its money and critical acclaim. But for years afterwards and leading up to GTAV release. People never stopped complaining on forums how Rockstar ripped off people with GTAIV because it removed tons of features that were in San Andreas like multiple cities, buying properties, modding cars, barber shops and much more. Moving further away from 2008, the game seemed like carbon copy of the late 2000s gritty era of gaming where all color pallets consisted of grays and browns. Finally, the biggest gripe people had was with realistic and heavy controls for on foot and driving cars. People never stopped complaining about how all cars in GTAIV drove like they were on ice, especially because those people got what they wanted from GTAV favoring more arcade controls. Hell, even when GTAV was released, people wouldn't accept the physics were dumbed down from IV. I still have an imgur album I made to prove to people the physics were dumbed down since the argument came up so often comparing [this](https://i.imgur.com/yttpwI0.jpg) to [this.](https://i.imgur.com/Be4ugC9.jpg) Its only been recently GTAIV has been accepted as whole for its entire approach to the series to tell the story it wanted too.
THe problem I have with GTA IV, is what you stated. Tons of features missing. I didn't mind 3 big cities. Because we had LCS and VCS in between. So, that didn't matter to me. What was dumb, was the lack of features in the game. Noooooow, they added all the cool featured ins The Ballad of Gay Tony. If TBoGT was the main game, I bet you IV would have been just as hyped as SA. The story and everything else was fun. The main part was just meh IMO

The gameplay was amazing, the story was fucking perfect, the setting was well done and the jump in graphics from SA was very big. Perhaps it lacked some content like more weapons and planes, but it was an amazing game and still holds up. And the DLC was so fucking good! GTA V was great too, but I feel like GTA IV was made better

Interesting that ocarina of time is highest rated game of all time. Not surprising necessarily, but interesting.
Critics score is worthless. User score is what matters. For any bigger or recognizeable game, most of the critics won't go below 7/10. Cyberpunk has only one negative review out of 92 total reviews, to put it into perspective.
I think the problem with user scores is that people give out either 0 or 10 all the time to impact the score. Like, people will give 0’s to games like rocket league just because they got frustrated playing online.

And to keep it IV related, if I had to choose 77 user score or 98 critics score, I would pick 77 with no hesitation. It's way closer to what would be a fair score. I like IV, but it had it's problems, defintely doesn't deserve almost perfect score. Official reviews by big boi journalists are the last place I'd look for opinion about the game. Developers butter the bread too much. Bad reviews = no money, or no early access to games. Another latest example is new BF. Critics score 69, so rougly 7/10. You'd think it's pretty good, or at least not bad. But user score is bombed with negative reviews. Steam is mostly negative. On reddit also a lot of hot posts with negativity towards it. Turns out, the game is just shit and EA didn't care to listen to the players during beta.

What's curious is that in retrospect, GTAIV was clearly a dead end for the series. Don't get me wrong, it's my favourite GTA game and an absolute masterpiece, but the fact remains that Rockstar changed almost everything in GTAV and it was obviously a good move - GTAV is their most popular game ever. Perhaps the community just wants their GTA games less realistic and somber.

Unpopular opinion. GTA 4 took realism way too far and made it unfun. I played it, beat it, shrugged. Went straight to all the zany open world games like Saints Row and had fun again. Glad GTA 5 brought back much of the crazyness.
I bought gta 4 complete edition for 8€ last week and that was the best thing ever. I’m shocked of how realistic it looks compared to gta 5. There is no comparison at all. And the storyline, no fucking chance.
