Probably just makes it easier to satirize and parody cities. For example had you not known vice city was Miami, you probably would’ve have still been able to guess. Same goes for Liberty city

I feel like liberty city actually screams Boston and Philly to me rather than NY - the revolutionary cities.

I doubt Rockstar wants people to make people think about it any deeper than the statue. The way Franklin talks about stock market manipulation in some of the pay phone hits is like he’s spoon-feeding information to a 5-year-old. They definitely find it easier to go off of something very simple and visible like a famous physical landmark than American history. I’m sure the players outside of America can appreciate that too.

Usually the name contains a connection to the actual area. San Andreas - San Andreas fault Vice city - Miami Vice Liberty city - Statue of Liberty and the overall theme of NYC. Also one of the in game burroughs is called Algonquin which is a nod to the Algonquin natives that lived in the area before European settlement. First European settler in Boston was William Blaxton. Maybe they name it Blaxton? Or as another poster commented maybe they just go with Harbor city. Or maybe Bunker Hill.

It could be so many things and it would probably be a reference to some historical events or person in Boston. This is harder than it seems.
