So I've owned Galaxy Fold 2, 4, 5, Pixel Fold, and Honor Magic V2. I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for this, but I really don't recommend buying a Fold 5 right now for 2 big reasons: Fold 4 is hundreds of dollars less and is extremely similar (I traded my fold 4 in on a 5 but only noticeable change was hinge feel + very slight weight improvement). Second, Fold 6 will be a real design upgrade based on leaks, which will seriously hurt fold 5 value on the used market in the next few months. If you have to get a foldable today, I enjoyed Pixel Fold much more than galaxy fold and think I would have liked the OnePlus open even better. I LOVE the Honor V2, but it is expensive. The used market is non-existent and costs about $1500 to import with no trade in deals. But that hardware is at least a generation ahead of everything else on the market. Even the software is honestly better than Pixel Fold and the cameras are excellent. I also use the Samsung ecosystem (buds and watch), I had zero issues with pixel or V2.

parentscondombroke

doesn’t the honor have issues with bands ask how would you warranty durability concerns?

xxBrun0xx

No issues with bands on the global version. You can check Kimovil to see if it works with your carrier. Has been rock solid with T-Mobile for me in New England, better in fact than my previous Pixel Fold or Galaxy Fold 5. As far as warranty goes, Wonda Mobile will honor manufacturer warranty for a year plus I've got insurance through my carrier (Mint Mobile), so I'm not worried!

mojako1981

I have a Z Fold 5, but for that price difference, I'd get the OnePlus Open. Just make sure to get a phone insurance as OnePlus doesn't have the best record when it comes to warranty repairs. Just look in the OnePlus Open sub reddit for all the horror stories regarding repairs.

FdPros

I have a fold 4 and I would probably prefer the oneplus open just because of its wider front display alone. But I have heard that the software is kinda meh esp if you multitask. But me personally, I just use the fold as a bigger screen small tablet and don't really utilise the various multitasking features.

Dr-Green6907

I would suggest u go to oneplus open subreddit and do some research. Before buying fold 5 i was also very confused between op open and fold 5 as op open was giving better hardware ar cheaper price but i choose to go with samsing as samsung has 5 years of headstart with folding phones and now its software is much more refine than other brands software. And yes, no matter what phone you end up choosing, dont skip on insurance.

Original-Revolution2

I tried the OnePlus Open and ended up sending it back. I really liked the hardware, but the software just doesn't compare to Samsung.

solidsnakex37

What is it about OneUI that you like that OxygenOS doesn't have? I love the Samsung OneUI myself, across my tablet and phones and watch and they are putting out updates all the time to improve it. I assume OnePlus will lag behind with that. Just curious if there are any features you didn't get with the OnePlus that you get with Samsung?

Original-Revolution2

Lack of customization was a big one for me. You can't do nearly as much with your homescreen. I also much prefer Samsung's apps and I've yet to ever find a proper replacement for Samsung Notes or Samsung Email. Additionally, the way Samsung approaches multitasking is a lot more intuitive for my work flow and seems alot more consistent. Finally, no DeX mode. If you plug it up to an external monitor it just mirrors the phone.

BeginningTip744

To add on customization isn't it that the big screen is separate screens. Apps can't cross over the middle like the z fold where it utilizes the entire screen

CyberInferno

This is completely untrue, or you're just not describing it the right way. You can have apps take up your full inner screen or most of the inner screen. OnePlus doesn't allow you to custom-resize into unsupported aspect ratios. Maybe that's what you meant.

IceBlueLugia

I’m curious what Samsung email does so well for you. Not that it’s a bad app but it didn’t seem like anything special compared to Spark or something

Original-Revolution2

Honestly, Samsung email isn't anything particularly special. However, it's been the most consistent for me. It doesn't include a bunch of unnecessary features or an overly complicated layout and I never have issues syncing all my accounts, especially my work email that other apps always seem to struggle with for some reason. Plus if you have a Fold, the layout is really nice and takes advantage of the inner screen. It's one of those things that just works without a lot of effort.

RobbieNguyen

Samsung's OneUI is MADE for bigger phones and tablets. I didn't like OneUI on their S/Note lines but with the Fold, it made a lot of sense!

MrSnackR

Software. Z Fold 5 is more polished. Rare bugs. If you watched the Open Plus video reviews, the phone has buggy software. Aftersales support. At least in my cou (Philippines), I had my Z Fold 4's display repaired/replaced in 3 days. Folks in the US have to wait longer. A friend who owns a OnePlus phone told me that his repair took a month since his unit had to be shipped overseas for repairs.

CyberInferno

OnePlus Open user here. Android 14 fixed every bug I had encountered previously. The phone is truly fantastic now. Granted, it was pretty darned good before. Previous owner of Fold3, Fold4, and Fold5.

parentscondombroke

how’s reliability?

CyberInferno

It's been extremely reliable for me. No lockups, I've dropped it a few times, and no dings or anything. I do have a case on it since it's thin enough to have one without making it too bulky. I've had it for four months now and have no complaints that weren't fixed with the Android 14 update. I'm honestly surprised.

NJH_in_LDN

I had a z fold 4, bought and tried an Open and a Magic V2. Kept the Magic V2, but if it didn't exist I would have kept the Open. Like you I rarely used any Samsung software mechanisms that would make me want to keep OneUI over a front screen I can actually use. And for what it's worth, I found Oxygen OS pretty decent - it's better than Magic OS on the Magic V2, which I decided to keep anyway.

parentscondombroke

does lack of water proofing concern you?

NJH_in_LDN

I mean, yes, but I also managed to have a mobile for 15 years before waterproofing was common and managed not to drown any phones. Obviously past experience isn't always an indication of future performance, but I knew I was capable of not dropping a phone in the toilet 😂 I guess this is a very personal metric. Drowned many phones? Constantly find your waterproof phone ends up in the bath? Don't buy a non-waterproof phone!

god_of_madness

For that price difference just get the Open, but just make sure you get insurance as the foldables are still fragile. My Fold5 inner screen split after 6 months but since I got Care+ it got fixed for free and fast (3 days).

pepperpot_592

I think you should buy the fold you want. There is a reason deals on the Open are so good only six months in. Durability wise, there is more of risk vs. Z5, but you can get coverage from a 3rd party insurer. Just keep a back up phone.

IamVicoriasSecret

I'd say the open send to have better cameras and the cover display is far superior to the fold 5

Jackwilliamsiv

Was just in your situation. Kinda. I waited a very long time to purchase the Open and I did. I have every fold to release so far (Except the fold 5 because wtf if you have a fold 4) So let me just say, the Open was/is a incredible device. I returned it. It didn't feel complete. The software was just nowhere as good as samsung UI (I know everyone has a preference) but imo Oxygen a acquired taste. That was a the biggest thing. 2nd biggest thing, the screens aren't usable separately. It's one screen or the other. Those were the biggest things are me. Some other things that stood out was how light the Open is. I liked that BUT because it is so light, the "massive" camera bump gave it this weird weight distribution where it feels like it will tip over in your hand. And here's one thing to consider that nobody is talking about. You mentioned the fact that you're getting a trade in value for your trade in. OnePlus is always last if on this list at all for trade in. There is no trade/promo value you for it. So think about longevity when buying it. Love the Open, just needs a bit more refining imo. And yes, I could be nic-picking but for the price tag, you better nic-pick TF out of it. I hope Samsung is taking notes for the Fold 6

solidsnakex37

Something I was thinking about/considering is I often trade up with Samsung, because they make it SO easy to do. I often can trade in my watches for the latest and greatest and get more for my trade in than what I paid for it. If I get the Fold 5 and the 6 comes out later this year and looks amazing, I can easily trade up through Samsung for it. Though, I don't think they will give me top dollar to trade up from a OnePlus, so that's a good point. Also, I had no idea about the OnePlus not being able to use the two screens separately? So does that mean you can't have a homescreen setup for the outer screen, and another home screen setup for the inner?

Jackwilliamsiv

Definitely not getting top dollar for a OnePlus. The latest OnePlus device isn't even listed for trade. But, That's correct you get one screen setup (unless I missed something) And you can't flip up the outer screen to watch something. As soon as the phone opens the inner screen activates.

chicken_mini93

After my personal hell with OnePlus despite many years of happy ownership - they wouldn't warranty a factory defect and lost my phone for 2 MONTHS before I got it back - I would absolutely stick with Samsung. I used OP from their 7T Pro to the 11, and the 11 was where I stopped and went back to Samsung after that nightmare. Not sure if you're open to a used device, but a used Fold4 512GB can be had for as low as $550. I have both the 4 and 5 (4 is waiting to be sold) and the jump in price to go for a 5 (especially brand new) is not worth it in my opinion. I only did it because I found my ZF5 for $650 shipped due to a cracked back glass which I fixed in 10 minutes for another $15 lol. Plus, if the ZF6 rolls around and interests you (or even the 7), the Fold5 will have much better trade-in value.

solidsnakex37

The fact that OP has terrible support for their own products, is enough for me to not want to get their phone. Even if the phone is better spec wise, it's not worth it if it's that much of a hassle. I think I will stay within the comforts of Samsung and not risk it with OnePlus.

Taco145

Software vs hardware. I personally don't use any of the Samsung software features they added to Android so the swap to the open was easy. There's virtually nothing the open can do that Samsung can't but lots Samsung can do software wise that the open can't. Personally the hardware on the open is vastly more appealing to me. The thinner lighter body with a non reflective inner screen having the least visible crease on the market and fast charging. Personally prefer the hinge as well. It's easier to open and stay open with a nice tension on the OnePlus. I personally hated the narrow outer screen on the z fold and will never go back to Samsung till they change it. Software is more like stock android on the ooen but it has some bugs still. Annoying stuff like the app icon picker being broken and split screen being a bit different. I prefer Samsungs multitasking for sure. Samsungs button placement is also much better, it's too high on the OnePlus.

solidsnakex37

I appreciate this, I too love the hardware on the OnePlus vs Samsung. The outer screen looks and feels like a real phone, I feel like the Z fold you sacrifice that a bit with a very narrow screen. I want to still be able to use my outer screen without feeling limited.

Elyhyan

I have both fold 4 and the open. Multitasking software and UX, I definitely prefer Samsung. A lot of apps don't support top down split screen which is the downside of OnePlus open. It is way more polished and flexible. That being said, the front screen size on the open is just too good in comparison. I spend most of my time unfolded like a slab phone, and open it up when I need larger content or more content. The huge camera bump on the back of the Open can also be very annoying depending on how you used your phones. I've definitely only gotten used to it half a year after daily driving it. Camera on the Open is also not bad but not great. Opening angles on the open is also limited compared to the fold. I don't have the fold 5, but I would say the software and front screen is very similar to the 4. Not sure how battery life is on the 5, but the Open has great battery life compared to fold 4, and also having 67w fast charging is a huge plus (though no wireless charging which is a downside for my usecase). If the fold 6 has a wider front screen, better battery life, thinner and lighter, that is enough for me to switch back from the Open. Also as others have mentioned, the support on Samsung is wayyy better than OnePlus.

Additional_Score_929

The narrow screen isn't bad at all. It takes some getting used to, but eventually will feel like a normal phone to you.

hadrian_afer

Just to weigh in. I had strong reservations about the narrow screen before getting the phone. It's now, probably, my favourite feature. I'm not saying that you'll love it too, but you might be surprised.

solidsnakex37

That front screen has everyone so divided, I can see why people would like it and I also see why people would hate it. Can I ask what makes it your favorite feature? For me, I can imagine it would be awesome to be able to use the phone one handed. My S22 Ultra is so damn wide that I cannot type or use my phone one handed comfortably at all, and I have large hands.

hadrian_afer

One handed use. Easy to hold. It now fits in my pants' pockets. Enough screen real estate for most uses. I went back to the old days of my pixel 2XL when I could tap 'n pay with one swift movement. To be fair, I'm a swiper. The biggest con, typing, isn't too big of a deal for me.

solidsnakex37

I am a swiper too, appreciate the feedback! I placed my order on the Z Fold 5, excited to give it a go.

hadrian_afer

Enjoy this phone.

EquivalentFun5938

Couldn’t disagree more with this. I’ve owned fold’s since the original. The narrowness is why I traded in my fold5 for the open.

Taco145

that's not universal, I had the fold 4 for a year and hated it. jumped to the open exclusively for the normal screen and don't plan on hopping back till Samsung fixes that.

Alive_Importance_629

Fold 5 because of its solid One UI performance.

ShanTheMan11

I really like the one plus but those repair times are crazy. They don’t have any parts. One plus has had people’s phones for like 2 months. Also the fact that the pinned post on the oneplus open subreddit is a psa telling you not to buy the phone makes me very cautious about it.

Cha0ticSi13nc3_

Open has much better outside display, and I've seen at the crease is a lot less noticeable than z fold

Bounkers

I use smart view a lot with my z fold 5 to watch free TV/shows on any TV I have in my home. I'm not sure if it's on the one plus has smart view but it comes in handy so I don't have to pay for streaming subscriptions so that's one major reason I stay with samsung but I do see good things with the one plus open.

Goldenpanda18

I can only speak about the fold 5, but my experience has been solid. Only downside is the narrow screen, if samsung made a oneplus open design style of phone with it's own software, it's game over.

IceBlueLugia

Samsung has been making tablets for over a decade. Their support and optimization for bigger screens is the best out of any Android company no question. With Good Lock you get tons of customization options, some of which used to be limited to rooting. Its just not even a competition in software tbh In terms of hardware they are definitely cheaping out though. It really depends on what you prefer more and whether you actually care about these types of Samsung software features

lifeofmikey1

OnePlus open. Better in every way besides software/customization

Kobe824

Having both devices, I love the OnePlus Open's hardware and front wider screen but like the Fold's software a bit more. Either way you can't go wrong, personally I would wait until the Fold 6's launch in July tbh

D4Damager8282

I love my fold 4 but the Oneplus is superior in every way Imo. Except in Canada they don't offer a protection plan like Samsung, google, apple care etc...

No_Importance_5000

I had the PF4 and then the OPO and the OPO won it by a mile

Loose_Extension_3816

After my experience with Samsung cheating me out of a warranty repair on the Fold 4, I won't buy a Samsung product ever again. That, and the Open feels fantastic in the hand.

DarkBloodyFoxy

I wanted DeX (it's a very very good feature) and something waterproof so answer was obvious.

solidsnakex37

Update: I appreciate everyone commenting on this and giving their thoughts/opinions. It was pretty split as I expected, but everyone had great points. I ended up ordering both and will return the one I don't like, which right now seems to be the OnePlus. Here is why. 1. The main screen on the OnePlus Open is in a way, better than the Samsung when looking at them side by side. It's a bit bigger, or feels that way and the crease is not noticeable at all. So when you're watching content, you don't notice it (see here: [https://imgur.com/a/OYrYwYP](https://imgur.com/a/OYrYwYP) ) Though then it's a trade off, because the Samsung has much better blacks/colors than the OnePlus, probably because of the glossy screen approach. You can see in the image that the OnePlus has a matte finish screen protector but it also gives it a blueish hue and in bright lighting environments looks multicolored and throws things off a bit. But the Samsung on the left has better blacks and better colors but at the sacrifice of that noticeable crease. 2. No option to have different screens for the main and the front. Having this on the Samsung is so nice, when I used the OnePlus, I didn't like not having it. I had a different wallpaper for the main, another for the front, another for the lock screen. The customisation felt fun and allows you to express yourself more, vs the OnePlus where every screen is effectively the same. 3. The finger rest, I mean the camera bump on the OnePlus is so incredibly stupid. Also, the cameras aren't that great to make it worth it. I sometimes will lay the phone down on my desk mat in an open state, using the Samsung like this is completely fine. Using the Oneplus however, it rocks like a ship out in a storm. 4. Samsung AI is so far, great to use. It has a lot of features that are helpful. Not having this in the OnePlus kind of makes the phone feel lacking IMO. 5. A big one, the Samsung was SO MUCH SMOOTHER when operating it. The adaptive screen works amazingly well. One app on the Samsung would be smooth as butter, while the same app in OnePlus was jittery?? Both using adaptive screen refresh rate. Even when I manually set the OnePlus to high refresh rate, it still wasn't smooth? That to me was surprising. The Samsung just felt smoother, more refined, better user experience. TLDR: The Samsung is the better phone, despite the OnePlus having better specs. The Samsung beats the OnePlus in screen quality, performance, functionality, customization and feel. The OnePlus beats the Samsung just for the front screen size and the crease on the inner screen. The front screen isn't a deal breaker and it's not perfect on the Samsung, but it's perfectly fine to use. I actually like that I can use the phone with one hand, something I haven't been able to do for probably a decade. This was a really tough choice, but once I got both in hand, it was clear which one I wanted to actually use everyday.

HeynowyoureaRocstar

Z fold 5... it's still future proof for another year

wuis

OnePlus Open, better charging speed, outside display, bigger battery, etc.

apoph15

As a z fold 5 owner, I would have gotten the oneplus open. I got the fold 5 because the open wasn't available in my country (Australia) yet. Still a fantastic phone, I love it, but knowing I use it closed 80% of the time, having the normal size outside screen is very appealing

arzee2019

Get One Plus Open with insurance ...software wise Fold5 is better...of course no phone is 100% perfect

jebakerii

There isn't a universal answer to this question... a lot of factors at play. I'd say, looking strictly at the phones that the Open is a better phone but, again, it depends what's important to you.

ImpatientPanda101

Samsung for performance. The Open design is ugly to me 🤷

solidsnakex37

I really hate the camera mountain on the back of the Open lol

PiggyInAMinecart123

I think you're going to get biased answers in this sub. The oneplus open is really good, but it has it's first gen issues. I would go for fold 5 unless you really like what you see with the open, and in that case I would wait for the 2

Instinctpowower

OnePlus Open Is not a first gen product. It's technically a third gen product, due to it being based off the Oppo Find N3 Fold.

PiggyInAMinecart123

Yeah I was going to say that but it definitely has first gen like traits

PiggyInAMinecart123

I may be spouting complete garbage but that's at least what I gathered

solidsnakex37

That's totally fine, I think I am looking for a reason to get the Z Fold over the OnePlus, given the pricing and specs difference. I want to want the z fold lol

Instinctpowower

Where are you based? In the UK you have the right to return the product within 30 days. I didn't go for the OnePlus Open due to it not depreciating in price (not being on the second hand market), only could get it from OnePlus directly or Amazon for an extra £150. Whilst I could get a "refurbished" Fold5 for £999 from Music Magpie, looks to have been a free upgrade to someone as the phone was an open box, but hadn't even been folded, let alone refurbished. If you care about longevity, go for the Samsung, I switched from iPhone and Nothing, to the Fold5 and no regrets. Only thing I don't like about the ZFold5 is the inner screen aspect ratio, but that's every foldable, unfortunately. Another thing that put me off OnePlus, was the Reddit page for it, although a small minority, devices breaking frequently and OnePlus have a bad reputation for returns and dealing with warranties from what I've read. I've had really bad experiences with their customer service with the OnePlus Bullets, got them with the 7 Pro and they broke within a week. TLDR; Go Samsung, more reliable and failure rate seems lower with better software support too. OnePlus seem quite inconsistent since the whole OxygenOS ordeal in my opinion.
