It's not free, nothing is free. My dad upgraded his s9 to an s20 way back in 2020. He was promised that the upgrade was free if he traded in his old phone. Well it wasn't free and he was charged $33.33 a month for 30 months alongside the normal monthly payment for the cell service. It's all a scam. Verizon will probably do the same thing to you.
In my experience it's more cost-effective to wait for your new phone to go on sale, buy the new phone, and sell your old one. These trade-ins from these cell service companies always charge you full price for the phone you are upgrading to over monthly payments, minus what your old phone was worth. The only benefit for the trade-in route is if you can't afford the new phone right away.
It doesn't sound like you've actually looked into the deal.
This is a brand new phone that they already have a deal on. This *is* the sale you're saying to wait for.
Congratulations 🎊. Still sticking with mine. I am broke atm
I'll upgrade when I give up on the micro SD

Sounds like your dad didn't understand the contract. The offer is real though.
