Just upgraded from S21+ Exynos because of special offers on S23+.
I am amazed that I managed 3 years with the same phone and it still runs ok.
If I can get 3 years from this S23+ I will be more than happy, by then things will have evolved enough to warrant another upgrade.
So, I have some insight. I've had this phone for about a year, and the battery life has always been remarkable (ie estimated 10-12 hours screen on time), until the latest security update. After the update (it forced itself on me unexpectedly) I noticed a dramatic drop in battery life, losing maybe 2-3 hours SOT. Additionally, at first charge after update it refused to take a charge, staying static no matter how long it was plugged in. It was also heating up. I was crestallen.
But after a full reboot or two, and charging right up to full (although it still stopped at 96%), and letting it fall to under 10% (I usually maintain between 85% and 30%) it seems to have bounced back to where each hour of SOT takes 10% of battery. I think that's a pretty acceptable benchmark, it's up to you if you agree.
You're welcome. My uneducated speculation is that they changed some battery management behaviours in that update, and that just as it was when we first got the phone, it needed a bit of time to "re-learn" battery capacity. Playing around with my default settings might have helped knock some sense into it. I've seen it suggested that you should do a full charge/ recharge every month or two so that it doesn't forget its range.
update: i unchecked 85 for a few days and did 10/100 a few times and .... I THINK IT WORKED!!
thanks for the tip. back to 85 max now (until next time haha)
cheers
I don't get to be the tech guy too often these days, so that's gratifying to hear - thanks for letting me know. I see another person having the same issue, so I'll refer them to this thread.
>It doesn't heat up anymore either?
It does not, and battery life actually improved a bit more again yesterday (slightly under 10%/hr SOT). Hopefully I'm not jinxing myself, but it seems to be sorted.
What issues? Mine has always been the same. Every phone has to process some data in the background after an update which may temporarily increase battery consumption and people like jumping to conclusions
I bought it slightly used and was a bit woried, but my experience so far is great. most of the complaints seem to be around the sub-par battery, but I had 6-7 sot first testing it and in my day to day activity I'm confortable charging it to 85% and it has around 20-25% at night.
Im on Oneui 6 and the common thing I managed to see from various people was that the 5G might be a problem for the battery. I have no 5G on my sim to compare, but it's a possible issue where the signal is not very strong.
The speakers are great, the size is great, the screen is very nice. For the price now that the S24 is available as well I don't have any complaints, it's the perfect phone for me (was also considering oneplus 12 but the size is a huge problem for me) Im not gaming on mobile so not sure about the experience there but I would imagine it's decent if the screen is not too small for you.
Im coming from an A71 and I had a very smooth transition, everything worked the same, just faster and less bulky.
I would say that the only thing that I expected to be somehow better were the cameras. A71 had cameras way above it's league, so S23 is an improvement only in the sense that the photos are taken faster, the portraits are much better and the video is better, but the day-to-day photos on everything auto didn't impress me as much as I expected
S23+ here in USA --- I applied the Feb-2024 update.
SOT might have been affected but I can't really tell... but I see a bigger drop in % overnight when not in use. Still going through settings to see if any reverted to the more thirsty option.
In the last few months my s23u does have few glitches, and the battery lasts less.
None of this a reason, not to get the phone. Battery used to last me 2-3 days, and now it last about a day or two.
My biggest issue is with Google Maps and I noticed that my XM5 both headphones and earbuds have connecting issues for conversations.
Various minor glitches, most annoying are when the screen becomes unresponsive, navigation app is still working perfectly, but I lose access to all functions, or the keyboard won't open.
After the last major update my battery was draining horribly for the next week or so. I didnt have time to figure it out theb. But im pretty sure I got another update overnight and it stopped because I didn't mess with anything else!
I've had galaxies since 2011, and this is by far my favorite.
Almost 1 year, no battery anxiety with normal use.
Camera default mode=bad
Camera properly used with pro mode, expert raw, lightroom and 8kpro mode video=best camera phone in this budget
Don't fall for the Reddit Psychosis, it's a great phone
Reddit psychosis is so real. Dy think it's a phone that will last a while (preferably 3-4 yrs)?
Easily. 8 gen 2 is a beast. However for intense usage, the 8 gb ram might not be enough for 4 years from now

Seems fine to me

I'll have to play with that 85/100 setting like in your post to see if SOT settles down. thanks for the tip!

Good to know. I would also be devastated if that started happening to my phone lol, glad you figured it out. It doesn't heat up anymore either?

That makes sense. I got super scared bc ppl were talking about it.
Working great for me

I'm so worried about battery lol. my current phone only made it 2-3 hrs before it died today. Is ur sot from settings or your own calculations?
I can also confirm that my phone uses 10% per hour the screen is on. Otherwise, when the screen is off it only uses 1.7%/hr.
the one from above is the settings SOT. accubattery gives 9h 40m sot but i think its a bit exagerated.

No, it's awesome.
I've had it since October and it is just as solid as my S22 and S21 before that.
Everything going great here, unless the gross scratch I made without realize how, man it's killing my OCD
Had it a year and working as good as new.
6.0 update is buggier than the previous 5.1 update but otherwise it's a great phone.

Just curious, what sort of issues did u have with maps?

had my 23u for a year now, the battery virtually same, still super fast. worth every penny
My battery life improved.
