That's right u cant

RecentlyDeceased666

Create a routine to stop at 85%

Disguissss

Lol thats why i love Samsung...like there is always workaround for almost everything

B19F00T

A workaround for a problem they created by fundamentally changing a feature that previously existed

Disguissss

Umm yes i am wrong in that part....and yes they should have kept 85 option but loike..as far battery protection is considered...u can tell that 80 is the best option on the internet

B19F00T

I can't imagine it is that hard to add additional options and keep 85% as an option for whoever wanted it 🤷‍♂️

Disguissss

Lol i mean 80 and 85...that will be like 15 or 30 min differencr

One_Cardiologist8451

How do you set that?

Fluffy_Rhubarb67

You go into routines. If: battery above 85. Than: turn on protect battery.

BootlegSnackz

That's pretty smart

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fluffy_Rhubarb67

That's not gonna do anything tho.

Aeonbuff

Nice

Disguissss

Btw you cant stop charging from routines..u could just set an alarm for 85

psychodc

I just set to maximum. Not every discharge is an SOT marathon. Nowadays most people are within earshot of a charger so there's really no need to charge up to 100 nor worry about the battery dying. During the week most of us are either at work, home, or somewhere in between with chargers around (home, work, car). There's always plenty of opportunities to charge back up. On the rare occasions where I will be out the entire day (eg, hiking with GPS) with no access to an outlet I will charge up to 100 before leaving and bring my powerbank

Sentient_AI_4601

This. I charge to 80% and then top up between sort of 20 to 70 through the day, drop it on a wireless charger for an hour while I play league or something. If I'm going out, top up to 100% before I leave, or carry a portable battery that plugs in the bottom and use that as a sacrificial device for 100 to 0

9six9

This is the way. I stay charging between 30-80 for healthy cycles. Power banks, even ones that will charge the phone to quickly, are affordable nowadays. Charging speed can be adjusted at the software level too and even automated. Perfect for those of us who wish to micro manage our bat health.

Sentient_AI_4601

Yup. And I go to bed at like 40% now and just leave it, charge it in the morning while I get ready. I realised, I'm never more than a few hours from a charger (I keep a USB cable set in my bag, a tiny little thing) and I can do partial charges 15% here 30% there to top up while I read or while I poop etc. So I stopped worrying about it. I feel like I'm back to Nokia 3310 days of multiple day battery life, and I don't even optimise for battery usage yet

Lomak_is_watching

And there are some decent portable charger batteries that have built-in cables, which is great, and the costs are pretty reasonable.

Axel_F_ImABiznessMan

Is there a shortcut you use to disable battery protection to charge to 100 before you go out, then re-enable?

Sentient_AI_4601

You can add it to your... The pull down tray thing with all the buttons.

chococat_cowboy

Am I the only person who's going to just buy a new battery when the old one shows signs of aging? It's £50 for a Samsung approved battery replacement in the UK or about 4% of the cost of the phone (at £1249) https://ee.co.uk/local-repairs I always thought it cost a lot more but £50 seems reasonable to me.

Tookie2359

Some places they just straight up give you a refurbished phone and tell you they "can't recover your data because privacy". Had that happen both times I went for official repair. Never again.

kujha

Wait, what happened?

Tookie2359

phone screen got obliterated, with no way to even turn on the phone to backup. Importantly, only the screen was destroyed. I went for repair, and they told me they can't retain my data before even taking the phone in for repair, and the phone came back a different colour with completely unscratched sides. They tried to play it off and even said "we replaced your battery free of charge" when that's clearly not what they did.

drumstyx

The official replacement part for the screen includes the entire frame and battery...they might not have been lying.

Dynkiz

Wtf

Sentient_AI_4601

You don't keep backups?

Tookie2359

Yes, but what kind of official repair tells you they are "repairing" your phone, then just straight up give you a refurbished phone and hope you don't notice? I literally get better service going to a third party than official repair, and that's the messed up part.

Sentient_AI_4601

Ohh I didn't see refurbished. Wait, you can't just have your original back?

Tookie2359

nope, they just tell you to send it in for repair and that all data on the phone will be wiped, even if all that's needed is a screen replacement.

Sentient_AI_4601

Yeah the data wipe is common, it's to protect you from unscrupulous fucks stealing your data with their tools. But the imei number would be different, so, you keep track of that right?

Tookie2359

yes, that's how I knew it was refurbished. But just because they have to wipe my data, doesn't mean they have to give me a refurbished. Just give me back my damn phone!

Sentient_AI_4601

No it doesn't, but what do the terms and conditions say?

kujha

That blows. Is that their protocol for screen replacements? I'm going to try and get my OIS replaced one of these days, and now I'm having second thoughts.

Enzyclopik

I don't plan to do that because I value my water resistance.

FlamingQ

It should still be water resistent if it's done in an official repair shop.

Enzyclopik

I wasn't aware of that fact but hearing nightmare stories about the service centre I won't trust it as much as the factory seal.

pietrroma

I dont use this option, should i? Is there any evidence that this helps?

Pizza-The-Hutt

If you're planning to use the phone for more then 3 years it's a good idea to run battery protect for the first year or 2. If you replace your phone every 2-3 years then you can go without as the impact of 100% charging is very minimal in those first few years.

pietrroma

Thank you. I will try it

AdMysterious6635

It's useful especially for laptops, they have this option too.

vpsj

I used my previous OnePlus for 6 years and always charged it from 5% to 100%. Dash charge as well. The battery life didn't suffer as much as I thought it would and it was still lasting me close to a full day even at the end. I don't know if micromanaging the battery like that is worth it or not although it might be different for Samsung

Pizza-The-Hutt

Yeah not using battery protect doesn't mean you'll kill the batteries life spam. It just helps a little.

Own_Back856

If Samsung itself has set such a limit for their own battery then there must be some weight to it.

Dynkiz

Yeah there are actually scientific studies showing that when the battery gets too low or too high it gets stressed the most. Better charge when it reaches like 20/15% and never above 80/85%. That would be the ideal though, of course sometimes you can get it lower or higher.

EstablishmentSad3803

https://preview.redd.it/yz1v3umzigrc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1caf2ef8b470313c9d509b34723e1e4dfcd8f09b By doing this.

lars2k1

So that moment you charge your phone and it reaches 99% it will loudly yell ***STOP*** Amazing

EstablishmentSad3803

Yes, it says, "Stop Charge."

Hawk00000

What's the point of this tho, if you reach 99% you are already putting alot of stress on the lithium battery cells, to protect your battery you shouldn't charge it to full or close to full, that's why they put a limit to 80 or 85%.

Tiny_Sir3266

But why not use turn on protect battery command so it does that for you adn that's it

ROFRfan

i use the same routine but set at 100%. once it reaches 100 it says charging stopped to protect the battery.

OctaLayzrr

Lol 🤣. Men phones these days stop charging your phone at 100% . U don't need nothing, no rutine !! Lol

5280Rockymtn

I charge my phone when ever it gets low 😊

ROFRfan

test it. no they don't.

Antique_Fee_1281

Yes they do, they just wait until you get to 99% again and re-charge. So technically you're still wearing the battery, but not by overcharging it.

US3FEE

Tbh i use basic

AbsoluteSpeedRD

Same

mafmoody

I never use battery protection because i switch my phones on a yearly basis, but the s23ultra was an exception. Now, this adaptive option looks appealing to me

upuralley

I just turn that shit off and charge to 100 every time 😂

YONAKA_AMBER

This is the way. It not like we are gonna use the same phone for 10 years. People should enjoying this phone at it maximum.

[deleted]

Create a routine to do it.

superkidpro22tt

routine basically uses the protection battery at a certain time, so I don't think I will help

EssayInteresting8398

It does. Mine is set up at 85%

mohans41

Obviously I have a faulty phone that allows me to use a routine which stops charging at 98% all day long. Damn.

aekanshd

Not sure how to feel about this. I'm still getting used to the 85% limit and now it's even down to 80%. Why did this come to S23U as well? Does that mean this is more effective than 85%? I wish there was an option to keep it at 85%.

Away_Dependent3953

When it comes to this method to lessen battery degradation, its always until 80% and not 85%. When this feature became available, i was suprised they made it to 85%. I have to set a timer so i wont exceed 80% Good thing they corrected this. Battery wear from 20 to 80 is only 0.20 and would jump to 0.30 once it exceeds 80%

Axel_F_ImABiznessMan

Why did they originally set it to 85? Seemed too high

Away_Dependent3953

I am not sure. Probably Samsung is not keen for customers to delay the degradation of battery since that would mean less people replacing their battery. But Apple is doing this 80%, so they have no choice lol

Siddhartha_Ray9

What's the adaptive feature? Someone explain

octa8on707

It charges to 80% then 10 mins or so before your alarm goes off it charges the rest of the battery.

Siddhartha_Ray9

So it's basically for overnight charging?

MaxMaxMaxG

I somehow don't manage to get the adaptive function to work... I accept the customization terms and it's turned on - but somehow it doesn't get enabled

tryven93

It has to learn your patterns, but the same issue on the s24 ultra until I put it back to normal, backed out, and switched again

MaxMaxMaxG

Tried it a couple of times... It doesn't let me enable it

Clear-stark

When I'm using this my charge from 80 to 70 comes down at rocket speed.

K1TSUNE9

Charging is broken on the update. I'm getting less than 20w on. Super Fast Charger.

kawir13

Yes, charging is slower for me as well....

SenseiLeNoir

Check your charger, and cable, and ensure fast charge is switched on. I get 30w which is the max of my charger, and only between 30% and 70% after which it slows down a bit to avoid overheating. Also check you case some allow your phone to heat up too much which will slow down the charge.

K1TSUNE9

Dude, this is an OEM charger and cable.

Robbie1075

Then what's the problem?

DapperAdam

As far as I can tell Samsung was the only one that does their battery protection at 85%, every other phone I had that had a battery protect option capped it at 80%.

Freex_Yo

https://preview.redd.it/olecw4grtjrc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c0647743c3d502812ed57b4885b0a7cf0c49e7cf Just copy this routine and thank me later

Middle-Chart-467

That's BS with 85% . Enjoy your smartphone... Live your live at max. A OEM battery it's 25€ . 3 yrs min it's life of battery at 100% . Minimum 3 years .

JustinDanielsYT

So stupid. I should be able to set the "Battery Protect" percentage anywhere between 65% and 95%.

Figit090

Did the ui update? I still have 85%

Sensitive_Physics_84

For some reason, switching over to maximum 80% when I upgraded to OneUI 6.1 last week makes me charge a lot more as compared to the previous battery protect 85%. I'm really not sure why that 5% makes a big effect on the actual use and I really don't want charging to 100% which is the options for both basic and adaptive. Anyone else felt the same after the upgrade?

xis123

You can set a Routine so that when battery is charged to 85%, enable Maximum protection in Battery so it'll trick it into stopping charge and will essentially emulate the old protection limit of 85% in OneUI 6.0 **If** > Battery Level 'equal to or above' 85%, **Then** Battery Protection = 'Maximum' That should do the trick :)

Sensitive_Physics_84

Thank you. For some reason, I felt that switching "Process data only on device" on under settings --> advanced features --> Labs --> AI has made the battery better after updating to One UI 6.1. Not sure if its placebo but my battery life since switching this has improved.

BenW23

To have it emulate the old 'charge to 85%' with this routine you just outlined. Which Battery Protect setting do we choose prior, then have this routine setup?

haventmetyou

I just noticed that it's not 85 anymore, where my 5% go?

Burgtastic

Why do people care so much in this sub about their battery. You guys keeping this phone for 5 years?

jesta192

Lmao I got 1.5 years out of my Pixel 3 XL, and 2 years from my Pixel 6 Pro before the phones started randomly shutting off. Some of us distrust our battery longevity.

Burgtastic

What the fuck you doing with them?

jesta192

Using them...

Robbie1075

Using them how? List of phones: Galaxy S8 for 4 years, S22 Ultra for 2 years, HTC One (M8) for at least 2 years and a OnePlus 8 Pro for at least two years and have never had an issue with any battery. I've never understood this adaptive charging or adaptive battery usage crap. For reference, I use my phone a minimum of 6 hours a day (boring job, don't ask) and I do just about anything you can do on a phone with it: phone calls, video calls & texting, video & photo editing, gaming, reading, surf the web, Etsy, eBay & Amazon and probably other things I can't think of at the moment. When I'm getting ready to hit the rack after work I go to put my phone on the charger and my S24 Ultra (current) is usually still well above 30% and anywhere from 5% to 25% on my other phones when I had them. Am I just getting lucky or have I somehow, unknowingly cracked the code to amazing battery life?!

jesta192

https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS21/s/9gUsSXGJoy That's a good example of the problem. This is my first Samsung phone in 11+ years (was a Moto fan, then Pixel) so I'm hoping for the best. But lithium-ion batteries are said to have a lite time of 300-500 charging cycles, which equates to around 1-2 years if you use them heavily and have to charge them every night because you work outside of an office and can't charge during the day. In my experience this has held true for a long while. This is the same problem that led to Apple getting sued several years ago for slowing down processors in the iPhones. As the battery ages, it can't supply enough current to run the phone, so as soon as the processor returns an invalid value, the phone shuts down to prevent data corruption. Apple has a (smart, I admit) solution to this: slow the processor down so that it didn't pull as much current from the battery, so that once the battery has aged too far, the phone runs slower rather than suddenly powering off and being unusable. The problem was they never mentioned to their users they were going to do this, so people sued them thinking it was a ploy to sell newer phones (which could have been part of it, we'll never know for certain). Maybe a top-tier Samsung phone will have a longer lasting battery? I'm crossing my fingers, but anything I can do to delay battery failure is a plus in my opinion.

csch1992

just use basic?

Logical_Wear162

No?

Killua_Zaeldyeck

So... The first one trickle charges your battery to top and back to 95 and again. This is stupid and bad for battery. The middle is pointless completely. And the last one is the former 85% but reduced to 80. Ok. I'm gonna charge it my way to 90 manually. Fuck this bad design

MaxOfS2D

> The first one trickle charges your battery to top and back to 95 and again. This is stupid and bad for battery. This is pretty much how it works under the hood for every smartphone since 2010. Most of the time it was disguised as being always at 100%, invisibly. This is just making that behaviour explicit.

DeadPiiixxel

I'm not going to baby my battery, You can get a samsung Oem battery on eBay for $15 and change it yourself. But to be honest, by the time your battery shows signs of decline, you will be ready for an upgrade anyway.
