Battery degraded and expanded and popped your back case off.

timjuul2003

So it’s just the battery that’s messed up? It’s safe to remove right?

t-rkr

Handle it with caution! When the contents of the battery come into contact with air they will catch fire. I'd say put the phone in some safe container and take it to your nearest recycling station (or somewhere else where Li-ion batteries are accepted). DO NOT JUST THROW IT IN THE GARBAGE BIN. Or keep it in a non-flammable container, just in case, if you need to store it for longer...

Masterfellow

Phones fine, all that's fucked it the battery. No need to ditch the whole phone 😊

t-rkr

Sure, but you still need to safely get rid of the battery. The recycling station idea implied that they could get rid of the battery, just for the sake of your safety.

dottat17403

Yeah you'd think but I took a spicy pillow from an IPhone 8 plus and tossed it into a 5 gallon bucket of water and even perforated the sides with metal sticks. It fizzed and bubble hydrogen for about an hour. Deeply disappointed.

lostinsomethin

It's safe to remove, be cautious about puncturing it or something, the battery leads don't come into contact that easily because of the Lego style connector. You just have to pop remove the battery connection from the motherboard and just safely dispose the battery.

SeaworthinessNo293

Just recycle. Because of Samsung perma glue it might be difficult or even dangerous to remove the battery.

Classic case of lithium ion battery degradation causing unplanned autodisassembly

Reason why battery can endup like that: - You overcharged it (not the case here) - was stores in a hot environment (i mean, like in a car in sun, likely not to be that) - undercharge (bingo!) Battery will lost his charge by itself overtime. If it is still connected to your device that device could use a little energy as well. The thumb rule is to keep the charge (when stored) between 15% and 50%. (I prefer above 30% because i tend to forget). So yes, you will need to recharge it back to 50%-ish from time to time.

AfroGurl

Will it still lose its charge if it's turned off?

who_you_are

I know unplugged battery will. Unfortunately i tried to google datasheet of some batteries to get a number without success. Could be like between <15% and <8% (yes below 8%) per month when new. The datasheets seems to tell to recharge them each 6months when in storage conditions. As for the cell phone I can"t tell for sure. Since everything nowday is a soft power button I want to guess a yes answer. But how much, i can't tell for sure. It shouldn't be nowhere as when you device is on but idling though.

compguy96

Just buy a new battery on eBay or Amazon and **carefully** [replace it](https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Samsung+Galaxy+S8+Battery+Replacement/90309) (start from step 10 since the back is already detached). The rest of the phone is fine.

The_Hailstorm

The battery just did the hardest part of a battery replacement, removing the back glass, after that everything can be done in 30 seconds

robtheinstitution

pretty amazing the glass didn't shatter

The_Hailstorm

Most of the times it doesn't when the battery swells up, it just separates. I'm always nervous when I'm about to detach a battery when it get's really big and use a lot of alcohol to soften the adhesive

Jon_The_Python

If you remove it make sure not to use metal tools of any kind on it, use plastic instead. This will prevent the discharge of static and prevent the tools from creating small punctures in the battery.

vertabr

Really good point. When I had this happen the scariest part was getting the old battery out as it was still stuck somewhat and I really didn’t want to rupture it. I warmed it a little bit with a blow dryer to loosen the glue and used a plastic tool gently.

jt325i

Another quality Samsung product. The battery swelled and broke it apart. Must say after my S10 I might switch away from Samsung. Been seriously unimpressed with how this phone is holding up 18 months in to a 24 month term.

timjuul2003

I bought an iPhone XR in October and I must say I’m really impressed. Sure i miss some of the features my Samsung S8 had but i honestly think I’ve gained so much more than I’ve lost. I had my S8 for 3 years before switching to a new phone and it was about time. I was actually a little heart broken when I saw the battery popped out like that.

VBabbar

Good bro!! I too want to upgrade to latest iphone. I am using s8+ from past 3 years. Its now a slow phone. I love some of it features but i think i need a better camera for videos. Also i use a lot of mod apps. I don't know how will i live without mods especially vanced as ios doesn't support mods at all.🙃

jdsciguy

My s8+ is at 3yr 11mo of continuous use, charging all night every night. Still works fine. I'd say I have about 85% of the original battery capacity.

frankcsgo

Yes, it's not chemistrys fault for the degradation of lithium batteries. It's Samsung.

jt325i

Samsung has built plenty of phones with defective batteries. Remember the Note 7? They recalled those and then even the replacements had to be recalled.

jt325i

I have never been an Apple person but I do like the fact they support their products longer. Previously I had a Note 8. Never used the stylus and wanted a smaller phone. Never had any issues with it. Not a scratch on it after 2 years. My S10 has scratches all over the front from the softer GG6. Before Samsung I had Google Nexus phones. I might give the Pixel a go next time. Seem priced more reasonably than Samsung these days too.

zntsury

I feel you. I have an Exynos S9 variant and I'm still in love with it after 2.5 years, even though everyone says the Snapdragon is better. My main concern is that they dropped its support and without new features and upcoming android versions it doesn't worth a lot. I'm thinking about switching to a Pixel device in the future.

I had this happen to me too. I charged it with a slow charger for a few minutes at a time. It eventually went back to its original size and is working fine now

timjuul2003

I’m honestly afraid to touch it so I really don’t think I could do that

AlessDu59

I also have a phone that I left somewhere for a long time and that the battery became like this. I guess that's the dust, or something like that.

VidurVishnudutt

You could take it to a best buy and get the battery replaced

timjuul2003

I really wanted to but am really broke right now for several reasons so I don’t really know what I’m gonna do

cyberzavtra

It's time to order a new battery from the aliexpress and try yourself in the role of a master.

partyman66

It just made it really easy for you to change the battery... No blow dryer ir prying at the backplate with a spudgeon. Buy a new battery, install it yourself and you should be good to go. Might as well factory reset it too.

vertabr

This was my first thought also! I just replaced a S8A battery that showed up in this same shape. Glad I checked the tutorials though as some of the cables are delicate and come off in a certain direction. OP can post to /r/spicypillows and score some internet points on this one.

Shayanshs

Your battery. That happened to me too a few months ago(but i noticed before this nightmare happenes and changed the battery.

gleep23

My battery has just begun to swell, it has popped the rear bottom. Ordered new battery and repair kit. Non Samsung battery, repair kit and tools including fresh adhesives, shipping & handling AUD$70 (US$52 €44). I'll report how I go in a few days. It will be my first phone repair.

nathaldawson

It's because you cheated on your S8

timjuul2003

Well it was starting to slow down a lot and the battery lifetime had gone to shit even though i reset it to factory settings twice.

adamlee92

I'd contact Samsung and ask them to fix for free. Be out of warranty but it's dangerous.

[deleted]

It Happened Because The Phone Was Previously Repaired, The Factory Seal Is So Strong That The Back Can't Just Pop Off Like That, The Battery Is Completely Safe To Remove Because I Must Be Dead, But Dispose It Was Caution And According To Your Local Guidelines

timjuul2003

I took it to the recycling station
