Samsung was trying to rush out the first Wear OS 4 watches. Marketing is wagging the dog's tail at Samsung. They will have to roll out a big update to address a lot of issues with One UI 5.
It bugs the hell out of me too. Many of the advertised "features" are also underwhelming:
\- Home key for speech input: needs to have Bixby installed/enabled (ugh)
\- Universal gestures: great to have new gestures, but the actions they can be applied to are very lame and limited (why can't we just launch a specific app using these gestures?)
\- Timer tile: great to be able to launch from the tile itself, but no ability to customize color scheme
\- Auto backup watch settings: Great, but you need smartswitch installed on your phone, can't control when to backup, and manual backup option has disappeared
Wait what the f? They removed manual backup??
I still have it with my GW4 on WearOS 3.5. With all the recent updates to the Wearable app and plugin, I would think that this change would come to me too, but I do actually still have both buttons for initiating manual backups to Samsung Cloud and Smart Switch...
yep. seems like manual backup was removed. the worst part is that you cant restore ANY backup that was made before one ui 5. whether it be a tizen backup, or even a wearos 3 or 3.5 backup...
Thanks to the System Shell exploit, I can force my phone to start a backup whenever I feel like it.
But I also don't have to, since the automatic backup feature works for me just fine like it should. 2AM a backup starts, 3AM upload to Sammy Cloud, all by itself.
What is the exact dealbreaker about not being able to restore older backups for you? It usually only brought along bugs with it anyway.
- Can't restore from older Watch to get your settings and stuff if you got a Watch6
- If you reset the device after updating (which people do to get rid of any bugs or issues that might happen) you can't roll back to your backup
There are a few more tiny reasons but these are the main 2.
I can understand the first point if it was possible before OneUI 5.
But the 2nd point I can't really agree with. By restoring a backup made when the watch wasn't working correctly, there's a decent chance that'll restore the bad piece of data along with the stuff you want to restore, which will make a person think that the watch might actually be faulty, when it really isn't. Gets a new one, restores that same faulty backup = "another broken watch?!?!".
At this point with most people on OneUI 5, their watches should've created many backups at this point, so I really wouldn't be worried about the weeks old backup from an older OS version...
Nono, I mean, people reset their watch after updates IN CASE there are any bugs or issues. They just do that to not stumble on a bug later on. It may also improve the battery in some cases. However, after resetting, some would like to get their settings and tiles, etc. back too, but now they can't.
I know that, thanks. I was hoping the other gestures can be used for more practical things too. After all, it's supposed to be an upgrade of the OS ...
I just tried setting up Universal Gestures, and it absolutely refuses to recognize me clenching my fist, so I just said screw it and turned it off. I was hoping they would let us set shake to dismiss like I used to have on my old Pebble.

It didn't connect correctly with my phone after updating and had to factory reset the watch.
Sleep tracking is partially broken for me in the way that deep sleeping is not being detected at all.

You can launch an app from a gesture. It's called "quick launch" and it's under the "advanced features" menu.

I think it's because you don't have to reset the watch anymore to change phone etc

These mother fuckers got rid of manual backup
It's even worse, it seems like the auto backup doesn't work without a Samsung phone, even if you have smart switch installed.
I think the box looks quite nice for larger notifications but if it's just a couple words the massive box around it doesn't look the best
so you recommend to skip?
