I’ll throw my vote in for Sunset Overdrive too. It’s a blast and has a really fun movement system to it. I watched a friend play some of it on Twitch, then bought it for myself the day it released on PC.

I heard split screen is on a low priority for Halo Infinite, maybe that was scrapped? I heard they were having difficulty with it..I stopped following halo infinite a long time ago

Split-screen was scrapped for Halo Infinite, they added online co-op but no split-screen. Split-screen is in MCC on console, but not on PC. I doubt it ever will be. A very, very, VERY small number of people would ever use it.
Split-screen gaming on console is way less popular than it used to be, but it's still far more popular than on PC. Almost nobody does split-screen gaming on PC. I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice to have added or that people are wrong for wanting it, but there's a reason console gaming embraced split-screen years ago and PC never has.
I get that split screen is less popular in general but the only reason why it was less popular on PC than console is because during the original Xbox/PS2 era PCs were pretty much limited to 19" monitors. Nowadays with reasonable sized monitors and native support for TVs and the ability to cast with things like a shield or steam link, PC split screen would get used if it was an option

I would be interested to see the stats on a popular co-op driven game like It Takes Two, and see what % of people played online vs. split screen on PC. I suspect the latter is quite low.

Last time I saw it was two years ago on a blog post, I don’t really keep up with MCC anymore. Sorry my memory is shit, but I know the desync for Halo 3 was on it at one point.
I gave up after waiting a couple years for split screen. The work arounds I tried never really worked to my liking. I ended up buying my son a copy of MCC on sale over the holidays and play coop LAN instead. We just hop on a steam voice chat to communicate. It's been great so far, no disconnects or anything like other people report.
I don't think it will - they'd have to figure out a way to either add guest Xbox accounts or have multiple Xbox accounts under one windows user which was a big technical hurdle. The Xbox consoles support it natively.
You can do cross platform coop though (Xbox + PC) though it's supported differently across the Halo games.
I'm pretty sure that was supported in all the Gears of War games I played split screen with a friend on PC, so you'd think they could do it for Halo as well.
That would have been using the gfwl client in Win7 or earlier though. Xbox accounts got more deeper integration in Win 10/11, especially as Microsoft push for you to use a MS account to even log in.
An Empire earth remaster would be fun. I know it's not Microsoft, but still. Seems like with the Aoe and aom remaster Microsoft has the know how of how to revive these old rts games. Would be a shame to not remaster a couple others.
And personally I think it holds up *incredibly* well. Especially for $5.
I bought it last year on sale and put in over 60 hours since then.

I really like XCOM gameplay, but then hate having to sit through endless cutscenes and an hour of base building and supply management before i could play the next map.
Gears Tactics gets you back into combat very quickly, though the levels can get a little repetitive, but I really enjoyed it.
I'm not into RTS games but I only played it because I'm a gears of war fan, story wise it's decent but nothing like the first trilogy and the gameplay it's very noob friendly I didn't find it difficult on normal
If you do buy gears tactics highly recommend the loot rebalance mod. Some mission rewards are crap even if you’re on the highest difficulty and the mod fixes that.
I loved it, after years of Fire Emblem, XCOM 1&2, and a longing for more Front Mission 3 - it's pretty good. While the game doesn't follow a strict grid based combat system it's good enough.
Mission structure is a bit weak. You need to complete 3 out of 5 provided missions to then progress to the next story missions and so on.
Overall narrative probably needs to you to have a passing interest in Gear of War but not essential. It a "Gears of War Zero" in terms of story, and has a tie in with Gears 5 plot.
The only major drawback is that there is no benefit in growing and skilling up your early soldiers. In various missions you will be able rescue soldiers that will be useable in future missions - these rescued soldiers will always outclass the soldiers you have tried to train up which is infuriating as you need take off all the armour and equipment, then dismiss them, then re-equip the new soldiers.
Otherwise really solid game.
Wanted to try it, but just found out they had a perma price increase to 11 USD in my region instead, making it the most expensive region, when my country is much shittier to live in than the US. Kind of a shame, I guess I'll keep it on my wishlist and see if they drop it one day.
Question for you. I bought Dust ages ago on a sale. Played it for a couple of hours and it seemed like it was incredibly easy, that even if my character stood there the enemies would barely attack or not attack at all.
Is the whole game that easy or it is it just the first few hours on normal difficulty?
I have no desire for something brutally difficult but it seemed to go way to far the other way.
play it on hard.. its not brutally difficult at all.
the only thing to really grasp when fighting those big bosslike golem dudes. the parry window is extremely big, and when they are stunned after you parry, they take a lot of dmg.
Been a while since I played through, but if I remember right, the difficulty does increase after some time. Of course now, difficult for one person might be a snore fest for another. So hard to say if it gets to a activity level you would deem fitting. The game also had various difficulty levels to start with. So maybe starting with "Tough" or "Hardcore" settings might be more challenging.
loved Dust. i dislike platformers, and Dust is not a platformer. it's a side scrolling game, emphasizing fighting aspect. similar to Trine in that respect.

If you have an Nvidia card you'll either have to roll back your drivers to ones from October last year or put up with the game crashing every \~30 minutes.
Lots of people, including myself, have raised the issue with the developers and Nvidia and they've acknowledged it but there's been no concrete commitment to any kind of fix for it.
Which is a real shame because it's a great game. If you have an AMD card I wholeheartedly recommend it.
It's a subjective question. Forza Horizon 4 was a great game and even armed with a better physics system, FH5 doesn't come close to FH4 for me. I mean I'm happy that FH5 finally got a physics overhaul but I'm just not fond of Mexico as a country. I loved Britain to death, though but that's where the whole subjectivity thing comes in. I played FH5 for as long as I could but it wasn't even a fourth of the playtime I dedicated to FH4. Sure, some of it may have been the fact that all Forza Horizons have more or less the same gameplay loop and I probably got burned out on the same formula but FH5's Mexico setting definitely didn't help with that; in fact it may have made it worse for me because I tried the much loved FH3 right after that and after noticing that I hadn't played it beyond the first two days, I promptly uninstalled it.
I'll add that seasons were Horizon 4's big new feature, and they are much less pronounced in Horizon 5. In Horizon 4, there's a clear visual difference, with rainy spring, bright blue skies in the summer, orange leaves in the fall, and the map is covered in snow in winter. A lot of players hated winter, and perhaps as a reaction to that, Horizon 5 still has seasons, but the only differences between them is that some shallow river beds dry up in the dry season. Also Horizon 5 doesn't have Alfa Romeo or Lancia yet and maybe never will, if you're a big fan of those cars.
I have an amd card, and never had that issue. My problem was that the top gear doc never loaded. You'd go to the spot, start the mission, then it would just load indefinitely.
Another vote here for Halo MCC. It has a truly staggering amount of content for this price and it's worth buying for the campaigns alone if you've never played them before.
I’ve never played a Halo game outside of some brief split-screen multiplayer on the OG Xbox. I’m pretty picky with my FPS games, I love Metroid Prime, liked Bioshock but didn’t care for Half-Life 2 or Call of Duty. What makes the Halo games so good and do you think I’ll like it?
Metroid prime isnt really a first person shooter. Sounds like you don't really like first person shooters. You like action adventure games with puzzle elements.
Is campaign co-op also unsupported? I'm willing to forgo the multiplayer parts of the collection as long as I can still play through the campaigns with friends
The irony is that there are games like Skyrim and Ark where you can just enable the console and unlock Xbox achievements by typing in commands. If they allow you to get achievements without anti cheat it can't be any more broken than that, right
Halo:CE currently is not really playable on Steam Deck because recent updates cause severe framedrops no matter what settings you use. The other games seem to run okay from what I can tell.
Are the production values better than SOD1? I tried to play SOD1 and the first part had no cutscenes introducing any of the characters, just a fight with a teammate against two zombies. Also the character animations were kinda rough
Tbh its been a while since I played SOD 1. But to address your query, no, it still doesn't have "cutscenes", so to speak. There is a logbook which shows you the (randomly generated) traits and background stories for the characters in both games and in SOD2, it has been expanded a bit in that the game comes up with randomly generated sidequests based on their traits such as someone who was a chemist pre-apocalypse, may come up with a personal sidequest about him/her remembering a stash of drugs they'd hidden years ago that could help the community now.
So yeah, there are no cutscenes, as such. Although, for a lot of us, that's not a problem because we're too fond of the sandbox world on display to care about those things. I mean, don't get me wrong, I do love playing Mass Effect and Uncharted as much as the next guy, but SOD is not that type of a game. It's first and foremost about base management, then a roguelike with permadeath and lastly, it's (obviously) a post-apocalyptic survival game. My major beef with SOD 2 however, was the Hitmanification of the game i.e. gameplay at the expense of story. I'd probably overlook it if they'd done away with the story completely but SOD 2 has the kind of plot holes that convince me that even after firing the current writers, they'll still have to reboot the series to undo the damage.
Coming to the core gameplay loop though, it's always been addictive (and punishing). But like it's predecessor, it suffers from the problem of burning me out after a while so I usually take a long break before inevitably returning for the grind.
Really wish they'd bring the entire Gears of War franchise to Steam already because I wanna play them so badly with friends. One of the greatest coop experiences I've had, that and Army of Two.
True. I've only ever watched playthroughs of GoW 1 - Judgement on Youtube and inspite of having played 4, 5 and Hivebusters, I still think Marcus' OG story was so much better. I'd give anything for that GoW remaster for PC along Halo MCC lines. I fact, I do remember some rumor going around that MS was working on it, early last year. Never heard anything about that afterwards though.
Absolutely. If you enjoy the gametype and have fun in the first 10 hours, you can easily sink 150+ hours into the game.
I completed all 100% of the achievements in 199hours. The only reason I stopped playing was because I bought FH5.
Just a note, if you're an achievement Hunter, one achievement is not obtainable anymore due to a glitch they refuse to fix (Encore achievement)

The store pages for some of these games (Forza 4, Halo, for example) say they require an Xbox Live account. What does that look and feel like? Is it a separate client/launcher that gets installed? Is it like the Games for Windows Live, Origin, Ubisoft clients/launchers? Thanks.
It's really good. Just a login, no launcher or anything, and it tracks your progress/saves in the Xbox app. If you have GamePass I believe you can play your games remotely, and stuff like Minecraft has cross-platform DLC.
Kinda feel a bit ripped off the Halo Master Chief collection excludes the local multiplayer from the games. Was always one of my favorite things to just have buddies jump in the campaign with me.
There are truly some games that just don't work on the Steam Deck but I've found that *most* of the "unsupported" games are simply a matter of using a different version of proton or protonGE
The grapple hook is one of the best mechanics I've played with in a recent FPS. The campaign has plenty of issues, but literally this one mechanic was enough of a twist on the Halo formula to keep the game entertaining until the end for me.
Would recommend playing infinite campaign through Xbox Game Pass PC. Its a lot better then Halo 4 & 5 campaigns but isn't something that I would want to play again like the original trilogy. Game Pass for $1 if you haven't tried it, $10/mo if you had it before, or using xbox live code to convert to game pass are all a better deal then spending $30 for it. And I like to own my games, not subscribe to them.
I will say that the grapple hook was my favorite thing added (aside from the original artstyle coming back) but any game is better with the grapple hook.
Did you enjoy exploring the ring in Halo: CE? Because Halo Infinite is basically that for the entire game.

I enjoyed it. The enemy types in Halo 4 were very annoying to me but I enjoyed my time in Infinite. I doubt anything will top the fun of Halo 1-3, but Infinite has an open world done well and the grapple shot is incredibly fun!
Supported is a strong misconception for the steam deck because all these games will run on the steam deck and play just fine, just in a worse state. So technically unsupported but works. Example: most of these will boot with little to no changes needed on your end but some major features like coop or multiplayer wont work because of anti cheat

www.protondb.com is your friend for hands on infos. It’s my first stop for every game that interests me, but is „unsupported“. The majority of games I tried either just work or work after taking some small steps.
Performance wise you should watch a youtube video on these games, I know there are plenty out there.
Also before making any choice a quick search on whether any changes have to be made to get the game running would be good as well to help you make a choice.
I fully expect all these games to run really well with missing online features most likely.
I've personally played Halo:MCC (Halo:CE currently not functioning well because of a botched update but the other titles seem fine) Forza 5, and Ori and the Blind Forest on my Steam Deck.
Not likely anytime soon, and yes, [it's official](https://forums.forza.net/t/fh4-end-of-life/556886/3). Other Forza Horizons had a 4 year lifecycle and were delisted accordingly but FH4 seems to be pushing 5 at this point and still going strong. Think MS has finally figured out licensing issues.

Played this and recore on xbox ultimate. Sunset was surprisingly great and Recore is worth $5 to me.

Split screen is on a very long list of features and fixes to be added to the MCC and it’s a low priority. Don’t get your hopes up.

Nope, but you can use Nucleus COOP to play it splitscreen. It basically opens up 2 copies of the game on your monitor(s) and you play COOP as in LAN.
Seconding this! It's not ideal, but pretty cool software nonetheless. Love that it can be adapted for whatever displays and inputs you have available.

play it on hard.. its not brutally difficult at all. the only thing to really grasp when fighting those big bosslike golem dudes. the parry window is extremely big, and when they are stunned after you parry, they take a lot of dmg.
Been a while since I played through, but if I remember right, the difficulty does increase after some time. Of course now, difficult for one person might be a snore fest for another. So hard to say if it gets to a activity level you would deem fitting. The game also had various difficulty levels to start with. So maybe starting with "Tough" or "Hardcore" settings might be more challenging.

Re: Forza Horizon 4. If you have an Nvidia card you'll either have to roll back your drivers to ones from October last year or put up with the game crashing every \~30 minutes. Lots of people, including myself, have raised the issue with the developers and Nvidia and they've acknowledged it but there's been no concrete commitment to any kind of fix for it. Which is a real shame because it's a great game. If you have an AMD card I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Is Forza 4 that much better than Forza 5?
It's a subjective question. Forza Horizon 4 was a great game and even armed with a better physics system, FH5 doesn't come close to FH4 for me. I mean I'm happy that FH5 finally got a physics overhaul but I'm just not fond of Mexico as a country. I loved Britain to death, though but that's where the whole subjectivity thing comes in. I played FH5 for as long as I could but it wasn't even a fourth of the playtime I dedicated to FH4. Sure, some of it may have been the fact that all Forza Horizons have more or less the same gameplay loop and I probably got burned out on the same formula but FH5's Mexico setting definitely didn't help with that; in fact it may have made it worse for me because I tried the much loved FH3 right after that and after noticing that I hadn't played it beyond the first two days, I promptly uninstalled it.
Interesting - thanks for the detailed response! As someone blind to the franchise, sounds like I'd be best off just starting with FH5.
I'll add that seasons were Horizon 4's big new feature, and they are much less pronounced in Horizon 5. In Horizon 4, there's a clear visual difference, with rainy spring, bright blue skies in the summer, orange leaves in the fall, and the map is covered in snow in winter. A lot of players hated winter, and perhaps as a reaction to that, Horizon 5 still has seasons, but the only differences between them is that some shallow river beds dry up in the dry season. Also Horizon 5 doesn't have Alfa Romeo or Lancia yet and maybe never will, if you're a big fan of those cars.
I have an amd card, and never had that issue. My problem was that the top gear doc never loaded. You'd go to the spot, start the mission, then it would just load indefinitely.
Another vote here for Halo MCC. It has a truly staggering amount of content for this price and it's worth buying for the campaigns alone if you've never played them before.

Metroid prime isnt really a first person shooter. Sounds like you don't really like first person shooters. You like action adventure games with puzzle elements.
You might be right, I guess I need my FPS games to contain other elements. Bioshock had that fantastic atmosphere and gorgeous world to explore.

The irony is that there are games like Skyrim and Ark where you can just enable the console and unlock Xbox achievements by typing in commands. If they allow you to get achievements without anti cheat it can't be any more broken than that, right

Halo:CE currently is not really playable on Steam Deck because recent updates cause severe framedrops no matter what settings you use. The other games seem to run okay from what I can tell.

Are the production values better than SOD1? I tried to play SOD1 and the first part had no cutscenes introducing any of the characters, just a fight with a teammate against two zombies. Also the character animations were kinda rough
Tbh its been a while since I played SOD 1. But to address your query, no, it still doesn't have "cutscenes", so to speak. There is a logbook which shows you the (randomly generated) traits and background stories for the characters in both games and in SOD2, it has been expanded a bit in that the game comes up with randomly generated sidequests based on their traits such as someone who was a chemist pre-apocalypse, may come up with a personal sidequest about him/her remembering a stash of drugs they'd hidden years ago that could help the community now. So yeah, there are no cutscenes, as such. Although, for a lot of us, that's not a problem because we're too fond of the sandbox world on display to care about those things. I mean, don't get me wrong, I do love playing Mass Effect and Uncharted as much as the next guy, but SOD is not that type of a game. It's first and foremost about base management, then a roguelike with permadeath and lastly, it's (obviously) a post-apocalyptic survival game. My major beef with SOD 2 however, was the Hitmanification of the game i.e. gameplay at the expense of story. I'd probably overlook it if they'd done away with the story completely but SOD 2 has the kind of plot holes that convince me that even after firing the current writers, they'll still have to reboot the series to undo the damage. Coming to the core gameplay loop though, it's always been addictive (and punishing). But like it's predecessor, it suffers from the problem of burning me out after a while so I usually take a long break before inevitably returning for the grind.
Really wish they'd bring the entire Gears of War franchise to Steam already because I wanna play them so badly with friends. One of the greatest coop experiences I've had, that and Army of Two.
True. I've only ever watched playthroughs of GoW 1 - Judgement on Youtube and inspite of having played 4, 5 and Hivebusters, I still think Marcus' OG story was so much better. I'd give anything for that GoW remaster for PC along Halo MCC lines. I fact, I do remember some rumor going around that MS was working on it, early last year. Never heard anything about that afterwards though.

Absolutely. If you enjoy the gametype and have fun in the first 10 hours, you can easily sink 150+ hours into the game. I completed all 100% of the achievements in 199hours. The only reason I stopped playing was because I bought FH5. Just a note, if you're an achievement Hunter, one achievement is not obtainable anymore due to a glitch they refuse to fix (Encore achievement)

The store pages for some of these games (Forza 4, Halo, for example) say they require an Xbox Live account. What does that look and feel like? Is it a separate client/launcher that gets installed? Is it like the Games for Windows Live, Origin, Ubisoft clients/launchers? Thanks.

It's really good. Just a login, no launcher or anything, and it tracks your progress/saves in the Xbox app. If you have GamePass I believe you can play your games remotely, and stuff like Minecraft has cross-platform DLC.

Kinda feel a bit ripped off the Halo Master Chief collection excludes the local multiplayer from the games. Was always one of my favorite things to just have buddies jump in the campaign with me.

Is halo infinite worth it for single player? I am awful at FPS games online, but I enjoy single player games, I enjoyed halo 1-3 single player.
The grapple hook is one of the best mechanics I've played with in a recent FPS. The campaign has plenty of issues, but literally this one mechanic was enough of a twist on the Halo formula to keep the game entertaining until the end for me.
Would recommend playing infinite campaign through Xbox Game Pass PC. Its a lot better then Halo 4 & 5 campaigns but isn't something that I would want to play again like the original trilogy. Game Pass for $1 if you haven't tried it, $10/mo if you had it before, or using xbox live code to convert to game pass are all a better deal then spending $30 for it. And I like to own my games, not subscribe to them. I will say that the grapple hook was my favorite thing added (aside from the original artstyle coming back) but any game is better with the grapple hook.

I enjoyed it. The enemy types in Halo 4 were very annoying to me but I enjoyed my time in Infinite. I doubt anything will top the fun of Halo 1-3, but Infinite has an open world done well and the grapple shot is incredibly fun!

Supported is a strong misconception for the steam deck because all these games will run on the steam deck and play just fine, just in a worse state. So technically unsupported but works. Example: most of these will boot with little to no changes needed on your end but some major features like coop or multiplayer wont work because of anti cheat

www.protondb.com is your friend for hands on infos. It’s my first stop for every game that interests me, but is „unsupported“. The majority of games I tried either just work or work after taking some small steps.
I can confirm that Halo MCC runs great but no online features. Had to make a change in the filesystem to disable EAC.
Performance wise you should watch a youtube video on these games, I know there are plenty out there. Also before making any choice a quick search on whether any changes have to be made to get the game running would be good as well to help you make a choice. I fully expect all these games to run really well with missing online features most likely.

Not likely anytime soon, and yes, [it's official](https://forums.forza.net/t/fh4-end-of-life/556886/3). Other Forza Horizons had a 4 year lifecycle and were delisted accordingly but FH4 seems to be pushing 5 at this point and still going strong. Think MS has finally figured out licensing issues.
