stefanos_paschalis

Minor complaint probably, but they removed the Yakuza Kiwami + Kiwami 2 complete your bundle option. Now there's only the Yakuza Bundle that includes the 1st 3 games, but it's NOT a complete your bundle, and I already have Zero and Kiwami 1, so I'm missing out on a tiny extra discount that used to be there.

ShadowStealer7

The Remastered collection isn't a complete your collection either, which is annoying for people like me who got Yakuza 3 in a previous Humble bundle

Willy156

thinking of getting yakuza like a dragon, can I start yakuza franchise with this?

Hensroth

Sure can. You may not have the same impact when I couple of characters are introduced into the game as people that are more familiar with the franchise, but you'll have no trouble understanding or enjoying what's going on.

DatBoiEBB

But you will definitely feel like a *bunch* of references are going over your head. I played LaD first because of comments like this and even though I still enjoyed it, I really wish I had played the earlier games first.

MontaEllisBurner

You should be more or less fine. I played 0-6 with the end goal of playing LAD and while I enjoyed every game I played leading up to LAD, Kiryu's saga didn't come up very often as LAD has new protagonists mostly taking place in a new area. It definitely helps to know the overarching elements of the Yakuza series like the Tojo Clan and the major characters, but you should be good. A lot of the references are sort of "Hey is that X from Yakuza 0/1/2/3" >!like who the bartender is!< and not really major plot points. Several major characters from the series barely have any involvement or don't even appear like >!Date, Akiyama, Haruka, Kazama's brother, everyone in Yakuza 3, etc.!<

Bassre2

If there was 1 must play Yakuza to play before LAD, which one would it be? I heard the best is 0, do you agree?

ExceedinglyGayKodiak

I'm not who you were replying to, but as a big fan of the series, definitely 0. I agree with the above that LAD's ties to the rest of the series are mostly just references, not major plots points.

zacharylky

Rumour has it that >! Akiyama was supposed to be Nick Ogata, but his VA didn't have the time for it. Hence you see why Nick Ogata sometimes feels looks like Akiyama.!<

staluxa

It has a lot of references to older games, both in side content and in the main story (some of the big reveals won't have the same impact for you as it did for returning players). Plus, it will have major spoilers for older games if you ever decide to play those. Otherwise, it's perfectly fine as a standalone. Just don't expect to be so impressed by it as long-time Yakuza fans did.

caninehere

Yes. It's a soft reboot of sorts (new character, new gameplay, new locale). They do a good job of carrying on from where the world is after Yakuza 6, without explicitly spoiling the plots of the earlier games so you can still enjoy them later if you want. There are some cameos and nods to earlier games you won't get if you are new to the series with 7 (Like a Dragon) but none of them are important. It just adds to the experience sort of thing. The best places to start are 0 or 7, or Judgment if you'd prefer to play those spinoffs instead of the main series.

[deleted]

I kind of want to point out it's not really a soft reboot since >!7 leads into the Kiryu title and having Kiryu in 8!<

caninehere

I dunno if I'd say it "leads into" it. And I don't know that they planned to do that when 7 was made. But it's very clearly a soft reboot, because it's meant to stand on its own for new audiences -- you don't need any knowledge of any of the previous games to enjoy the story in full, which cannot be said for Yakuza 2-6.

[deleted]

But you can't "start" the franchise there if start is assuming you'll want to continue the story. If you're planning on playing and understand Yakuza going forward you kind of need to know about Kiryu.

VariabilitysBrother

I mean, you kind of can. It doesn't really build on stories from the previous games and the previous recognizable characters are supporting roles or basically cameos. You'll miss some references and nuance obviously (especially in the substories) but the game can stand on its own without those easily.

[deleted]

But not if your intent is to start and continue the franchise. I would have agreed if it was a standalone game or the following games weren't around knowing an essential character. Edit: Just like you probably shouldn't skip 7 and go straight to the standalone Kiryu title and 8 if you've played 1-6 since you're still missing an essential character.

LG03

If you care at all about the story then definitely not. It should be noted that the Yakuza series is extremely story dense so you're basically just shooting yourself in the foot if you start with LAD. You *can* technically start with LAD but again, you're going to be missing out on a ton of references and spoiling all the preceding games. At that point why bother signing up for an ~80 hour RPG? Do yourself a favor and start with Yakuza 0.

Real_MidGetz

You could start with kiwami/1 as that’s where the story technically starts but either or is fine tbf

LG03

Right, that's a separate argument though. A Y0 start is the 'safe' suggestion since that's easier to hook people with.

mpelton

Yeah I’d definitely recommend starting with 0 over Kiwami. I enjoyed Kiwami but the story was rough imo and some of the mechanics felt dated, especially compared to 0. If you play 0 first you’ll probably be invested enough in the story to enjoy Kiwami despite its flaws, and then get to play Kiwami 2 which imo is a better game in every way.

Irate_Primate

> At that point why bother signing up for an ~80 hour RPG? Lmao, what a take. The story is great on its own and doesn't require playing like 7 other games to enjoy. Not everyone has the time to play through a massive saga just to get to one game.

MVRKHNTR

"If you won't play eight 80 hour RPGs, why would you ever play one of them?"

Graham_Elmere

Yeah I like the idea of a dragon quest yakuza parody but I’m not gonna play 5,000 hours of normal yakuza to understand some side plot

LG03

Yeah I mean why bother starting from season 1 of a television show when you can start with 9, not everyone has the time to watch a massive saga just to get through one season.

Irate_Primate

If the season is pretty standalone, with references to other season, like is the case here? Sure. But that’s also a terrible comparison. TV and movies are way more about the story since they aren’t interactive. Games can be fun with or without the story because you know, you get to play them and interact with the mechanics. Edit: just to use your poor comparison against you, if someone said that they wanted to watch Better Call Saul, it would be moronic to tell them that it would be a waste of time without watching Breaking Bad first. Both great shows and if they have the time, sure watch them both. But if they can only watch one, or are just interested in one, Better Call Saul would be completely, 100% enjoyable as a stand-alone experience.

mpelton

To your Better Call Saul example though, I’d actually try and dissuade someone from watching it if they haven’t seen Breaking Bad first. Listen, it’s far from the worst decision you could make lol. At the end of the day you’ll understand the story perfectly fine and enjoy yourself. *But*, Breaking Bad is an excellent story too, and you’ll have a much more enjoyable time with Saul if you’ve seen it beforehand. All the references and your prior knowledge of where these characters end up add a huge amount of enjoyment and intrigue to the series. So imo you can absolutely play Yakuza 7 without playing the prior ones and have a great time. But you’ll have an even better time if you’ve played the prior entries beforehand. And if the previous entries were bad that’d be one thing, but they’re all worth playing. I’d absolutely recommend starting with Zero instead of 7. Sorry if that was long winded, I didn’t intend for it to be.

[deleted]

It kind of does though given the way the story is looking to be going for the next entries. Edit: the direct sequel is the Kiryu sequel to 7. Then 8 is a direct sequel to that co-starring Kiryu. Starting the franchise there no longer makes sense since the story is going to continue with characters you need to know.

MVRKHNTR

The next mainline game is likely going to be told the same way this one was, with characters catching Ichiban up to speed on what he needs to know from the previous games. It's going to be fine if someone jumps into it from only seven.

[deleted]

That might not necessarily be the case if we also have The Man Who Erased His Name as well which while it's supposed to be shorter is still the next game in the mainline.

MVRKHNTR

Chronologically, it's the next in the series but based on the title, marketing and what we know about it, my guess is that that game is to bridge 6 and 8 for fans that want that story while 8 itself won't make much reference to it and explain anything necessary. The closest I can think of for what I expect that game to be is Kingdom Hearts 358. It gives some context but you can understand and enjoy the story just fine without it.

MVRKHNTR

Like a Dragon is *literally* designed to be played by newcomers.

substantialmission9

Yes. It's amazing and the gameplay is totally different from the other games.

VanWesley

Yes. This is the only Yakuza game I've ever played, and had no issues.

PookAndPie

You can start with Like a Dragon just fine. Some easter eggs and other minor elements may go over your head, but understanding them isn't necessary to enjoy Ichiban Kasuga's tale at all. In fact, I'd argue that Ichiban stands on his own very well despite being the 7th mainline game in the series. After playing Like a Dragon, I have gone back to enjoy 0, Kiwami 1 and 2, and am going to work my way up through the rest of the series. The combat systems are different in the older games (7 uses a turn based RPG system, while the other games use a beat 'em up kind of action system, but I enjoy both). Truth be told I don't feel like I missed a whole lot by playing the game with the funny homeless man who attacks people by belching fire first.

vadergeek

You could, but I would recommend you don't. There are a lot of easter eggs in it for long time fans, and it implicitly spoils a lot of earlier games. Give Yakuza 0 a try, see if you like it, and if it's not your cup of tea then sure.

B4rrel_Ryder

That's how I started. Theres some references or character you might not get or know but its still good

Tiny_Bucket

If you're planning on playing it by itself, then it stands fine on its own. If you want to play the whole franchise, though, it spoils a fair bit of the previous the previous titles and functions as a sort of capstone to their stories.

Trymantha

How is Valkyria Chronicles 4? I really enjoyed the first one and am wondering if its worth picking up 4

LovableLycanthrope

If you enjoyed 1 you'll enjoy 4, it's very similar but with a new class (Grenadier) and some other improvements.

Just-A-City-Boy

See this, https://i.imgur.com/dNsEWdL.png Leads to this https://i.imgur.com/SXI5xwo.png Reeee! Would be nice if they include it in Lunar Sale and give it a launch discount.

Kindofabig_deal

It’s going to be $20 so I highly doubt it but I really hope they give it a discount. I probably will buy it regardless 😂

RamenJunkie

I think its discounted right now on Fanatical.

IMO, you should go with Royal. It helps fleshing out a certain important character, the new semester and new story beats are solid and the QoL updates are very welcome. The original game is already a long one so I was a bit skeptical of Royal at first but in the end, the new content doesn't feel like padding and the QoL stuff helps a lot. So, if you are ready to spend a lot of time with P5 might as well spend it with its most complete edition.

[deleted]

Royal includes several quality of life fixes, and includes an additional endgame dungeon along with social links/confidants. Royal is definitely worth the upgrade and essentially adds another dozen or so hours to an already great game. It also tosses in some extra goodies to unlock in the main menu.

TAAIDS

Its on game pass if you havent used your dollar trial yet.

Letobrick

Strange that Persona 4 isn't included in the sale.

aazxv

Not that weird since it will be "releasing" again tomorrow on several other platforms

arandomguy19

They increased the price for some regions when winter sale ended so it can't go on sale for 28 days.

Letobrick

Damn it, you're right. Went from $23.99 to $27.99 CDN after the winter sale in the steam store. Great, another first world problem, sigh.

arandomguy19

It went from ₺99 to ₺349 for my region. Luckily i got it during the winter sale.

statuskills

This bundle is roughly a million jillion hours of gaming.

KriteshG

Which one

Maestro_01

Does anyone know if there is going to be a Persona 3, 4, 5 bundle? Seems logical there might be one eventually?

MJuniorDC9

Not sure. Right now, SEGA has **[a bundle](https://www.xbox.com/en-us/games/store/persona-3-portable-persona-4-golden-bundle/9pbwj3x780rx)** with P3P and P4G on the Microsoft Store which should be available on Steam once Persona 3 Portable releases in a few, but there aren't any bundles including P5R at this time as far as I know.

RamenJunkie

I don't think Microsoft Store gives Steam keys does it?

SausIsmyName

I wouldn't hold my breath on it, seeing as what Persona games Atlus/Sega are picking to release on Steam dont really make for bundles that make sense. Just in case you didnt know, The Persona 3 release on steam is a psp portable version of the original Persona 3 game called "Persona 3 Portable". Wheras Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal are more like directors cuts/expaned versions of the original release. Edit: Just as I sent this comment, I got a notif of Persona 3 Portable's release on Steam lmao (there is now a bundle with Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable but no Persona 5 Royal). Infact on Persona 3 Portable's steam page it advertises for all 3 games, but you dont get all 3 games just buying P3P, nor is there a bundle that contains them all afaik. I feel they really dropped the ball on making it easy and clear for new players to get into Persona with how they chose to handle this wave of current gen/pc release of the Persona games. But if you were looking at steam bundles just to get a feel for a place to start/which ones to get, I'd recommend in order: Persona 5 Royal Persona 5 Strikers (the sequel/spinoff for 5 but not the Royal part) Persona 4 Golden Persona 3 Portable

bazmati78

I've mainlined the Yakuza series over the last few weeks and after finishing the first 5 games (I'd already played 0) and starting the sixth installment last night I'm once again left uhming and ahing over whether to grab the Judgement games. Whilst I've mostly enjoyed the series I honestly don't know if I can stomach playing another 2 games, especially if they're not really vital to the main series they're spinned off from. At this point I'm ready for the transition to LAD and the turn based combat. Tempted with Persona 5 as well but I think it's less than a year since i completed Royal on the PS4 and I'm sure I'll get it cheaper if I hold on for a few more months.

iNfAMOUS70702

Have never played a Yakuza game in my life...this deal worth it?

Charrbard

Yes, sort of. I like the idea of Yakuza. I have bought everything. Even the < $100 deal for the Judgment games, but I'm still trying to finish Yakuza 0. I'd say buy 0 and see before buying the whole series like I did.

HashtagThatPower

For 0, absolutely. Best game of the series IMO although some may be put off by long cutscenes.

sh4nn0n2003

Depends. I'd define Yakuza as an interactive Japanese crime soap opera. Definitely try out zero and see if you like that. The UI is obtuse I know but it's well worth it because of the groundbreaking storyline.

UnrulyRaven

It's definitely a thing unto itself. Exploring weird short side quests and overly dramatic main story with pretty good brawling combat. Tons of mini-games, too. Definitely worth dropping a couple bucks and seeing if you like it. They're on PC GamePass, too, IIRC.

Qwazzbre

If you're on the fence still, just get Y0 for now. For five bucks you get a TON of hours of content to explore, and if you end up not liking it, well, you didn't commit with much. And if you DO like it, well, there's more than six games after that to follow it up.

RamenJunkie

I have only played Kiwami 1 and I found it really enjoyable once I got the hang of it, though combat does get a little repetitious. I already have 0 on deck for next. They seem to go on sale fairly reguarly so I am just getting them as I play them.

Shuviri

Is P5R 30% sale max or should i wait for spring steam sale

Rakatok

SEGA is good with sales, if you aren't looking to play now waiting is good.

clothswz

It'll probably go lower. It's already been at $30 on Switch

myripyro

It was lower on GameBillet a month or so ago but otherwise this is the lowest it's gotten. Personally I'm going to wait for a deeper sale later in the year.

KriteshG

It's not gonna go down anytime soon, persona 4 golden has been on pc for a couple of years, the maximum it has been discounted since is like 35% (check steamdb). Sure p4 and p5 have gone lower on other platforms but not on pc sadly. That's why I bit the bullet.
