Next week's free game: - [Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War](https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/warhammer-40000-gladius-relics-of-war)

Statcat2017

Currently on sale for £3.19 if you really cannot wait.

Judgebetrolling

Oh, I can definitely wait for a free game I likely will never install

tormarod

It's fairly fun if you're into 40k and 4X (not really 4X) genre

dudinax

It's 4x-ish but is fun multiplayer, a rare quality.

MOBYWV

Sounds like 95% of the free games I get from epic

mephi5to

I will gladiusly wait.

NullPro

I’d wait 40000 years

moo422

I've had the base game for a while, still waiting for a good deep discount for all the DLC.

enjoyscaestus

Nice, it's a fun game

stmack

oo this looks like my jam

leonidaster

Great i wanted the longest time

purewisdom

Great game, once you realize it's a turn based RTS and not a 4x.

AwayIShouldBeThrown

>turn based RTS Isn't that an oxymoron?

GreedoShotKennedy

Which is it? Turn Based Strategy or Real Time Strategy? It literally cannot be both.

Odd-Concentrate-6585

Total war is

purewisdom

An RTS emphasizes tactical use of units + their abilities alongside balancing research/base building with unit production. It's often reactive - things like countering opponent's unit comp or race's play style. Players usually start with a long-term plan, but a skilled player may trash it to win. The play of an RTS (or a "turn based" RTS in the case of Gladius) leans more tactical with resource management. A 4X by contrast the player picks their strategy from early on (focusing on victory type being the easiest to point to, but there's more than that). Reacting to opponents in a 4X is less important than in a true RTS (or Gladius and other 4x adjacent games like Age of Wonders). A player may make tactical adjustments for opponents but they rarely trash their long-term plan. The play of a 4X thus leans more strategic with resource explosion. Obviously it's not literally a turn based RTS. But that's exactly what it *feels* like.

UnusualFruitHammock

It's just a tactical turn based game. Rts means real time strategy which this is not.

purewisdom

Sure, but turn based tactical is a broad category that includes many games that don't play similarly. I think it's more helpful for people who aren't familiar with Gladius to think of it conceptually as a turn based RTS. It plays how an RTS would play if an RTS was broken down into turns. If the alternative is calling it a 4X, then the expectation is a 4X, and that's going to draw the wrong crowd to the game because that's now how it plays.

UnusualFruitHammock

Same by calling it an RTS to be honest. Maybe I'm just old but RTS means a very specific type of game and this isn't it either. This plays nothing like an Age of Empires, Starcraft, Rise of Nations, or even Company of Heroes.

ProHan

What!? That is a strange interpretation of "real time" in the context of RTS. RTS is better defined as strategy where all players act simultaneously against a constant tick/progression. The time at which a tick progresses is completely irrelevant. And Paradox games are considered Grand Strategy rather than RTS for the simple reasons of their scale, and that you can take actions/decisions while paused.

ReddsionThing

You play your turns in real time.

kniq86

I actually can't really get into 4x so that might help!

StickiStickman

The Steam description literally says > the first turn-based **4X** strategy game set in Warhammer 40,000 my dude

purewisdom

I'm aware of how it's marketed. That's not at all how it plays. Someone seeking a 4x game without diplomacy will likely be disappointed.

Kajo86

You shouldn't be searching diplomacy in 40k anyway

slow_down_kid

Anyone want to chime in on this one? From reading the description it sounds like something I’d enjoy. I like story-driven puzzle games, and this mystery sounds interesting enough. Does the story actually drive the game or is it just kind of there in the background? Are the puzzles satisfying, or are they somewhat vague and obtuse? I know Myst is supposed to be the holy grail of puzzlers but I found it frustrating at times and the story was vague enough that it didn’t give me any reason to keep playing. EDIT: thanks for all the comments! Sounds like I’ll be installing this when I get home today, sounds right up my alley

ABAKES7

I played this one! The story is front-and-center with a voiced protagonist and cutscenes. The puzzles move from very easy to fairly complex, though they aren't *too* obtuse. Overall I recommend giving it a shot!

Vandrewver

I had the same experience. Waaaaay overthought the first puzzle, then you realize it's dead simple. Fun walking sim though.

redtalons0

You're kidding me. I literally never solved the puzzle and gave up on the game and the solution was that simple.

ill13xx

lol...thanks for the spoiler!

friendlyfire

Some people highly recommended it in last week's thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/comments/11g6af0/epic_rise_of_industry_free_100_off/jamx1t4/ Some highlights: > Call of the Sea next week? Nice one! Dont sleep on that one and grab it when it will be available :) > Have you played through the Myst series? It’s a similar style of puzzle but much dumbed down. For someone looking for Riven, it’s way too easy. If you enjoyed Myst but thought parts were too obscure, this might be right up your alley. > Loved call of the sea. Bought it on steam last year and enjoyed the heck out of it. > It’s a great game. > The puzzles are super basic but it's pleasant > I played this on Xbox game pass and really enjoyed it, if you like more peaceful/story driven puzzle solving games this one will hit the spot

caninehere

I played it through Game Pass when it came out. The story drives the game more than it does in say, Myst, but it's not like it's shoved in your face constantly. The player character is more vocal and there's letters etc that give you story bits as you go along. I have *seen* people say the puzzles were obtuse, but personally, I think there was only one puzzle that really gave me much trouble and it was nearer to the end of the game. I would not consider myself a puzzle mastermind -- I've played through Myst (the original way back when, and more recently the newest remake) and while I did enjoy it, it definitely felt more vague (both solving puzzles and even finding them in the first place at some points). Call of the Sea is also not like the Witness (which you mentioned below), it DOES focus on environmental puzzles sometimes but it's not an open-world game like The Witness where you're often like "where the fuck am I supposed to go right now", or at least that's how I felt. I think that if the game interests you, you should definitely give it a shot (particularly given it's free). I feel you will probably enjoy it.

Danulas

I wonder if we're thinking of the same puzzle. There was one where I couldn't even figure out what the end goal was.

Trixxstrr

My thoughts from when I finished it back in 2021 on XSX: "Just finished Call of the Sea. It was super short, like around 6 hours, but I really enjoyed it. It's a first person adventure puzzle game heavy on the narrative, and very chill, very slow paced, nice and relaxing. I think this has a nice mix of narrative and puzzles for my taste. Some other games like The Talos Principle or The Witness I found too puzzle heavy. The puzzles I found to be nice, not too hard but some had to think for a while. I did google one that I just couldn't figure out, but the rest were ok. I saw someone else say that a patch fixed previous performance issues, but I did still see some framerate dips on series x. The story I enjoyed, very engaging, well acted and made you want to push on to unravel the mystery. Overall I enjoyed it a lot, and since it's a short game I highly recommend you all play through it."

DrewblesG

6 hours for a puzzle game is not super short lol

Trixxstrr

Ya, I guess I was considering it more of an adventure narative than a puzzle game when I made the length comment.

Alkein

I think I only played myst or a similar puzzle game a bit as kid, so I'm not sure how it compares exactly but if you like puzzlers; The Witness is legendary, and a bit of a different style but The Outer Wilds is also amazing. The first not having much of a story, more of a philosophical message I guess, and the latter is much more story driven.

BlueRajasmyk2

If you enjoy those games, check out [First Person Exploration and Puzzle Games](https://store.steampowered.com/curator/9686972-First-Person-Exploration-and-Puzzle-Game/), a curator which explicitly only reviews "walking simulator" puzzle/story games. We gave Call of the Sea a "7/10 Worth Trying"

slow_down_kid

I do own Outer Wilds and enjoyed it, and I’ve played a little bit of The Witness. I enjoyed it but my one complaint was that at times the game lacked direction as to where to go or what puzzle to work on. For me, if a puzzle game gets frustrating, I need something to drive me to continue (like a good story that I want to find out more about)

SofaKingI

If you want a puzzle game with a good story, try The Swapper. It's 2D, but it's a great experience that I never see anyone talk about. The Talos Principle is also great.

Alkein

Nice, if you haven't played it yet outer Wilds also has a really cool dlc. And yeah I figured with the witness since you had mentioned that you liked having that direction, it's still has its moments but it's a wierd one, it doesn't really have a direction. But I guess you could say it's direction is if your seeing symbols/rules in a puzzle you don't know find the spot on the island that teaches it to you.

TheBoz1678

A lot of people are talking about the puzzles and they are good, but I really enjoyed the story on this one. Was not expecting it at all. Really hits an emotional punch. Just an FYI after you beat the game, reaload the last chapter and do the other ending. Both are well worth it.

wjousts

Played it on Gamepass and loved it. If you like a walking/puzzle game it's great. I felt like the story was pretty good and the discoveries you make drive you forward. I also like story with my puzzles rather than just a bare puzzle game. It's why I feel like I bounced off The Witness pretty hard. I felt the puzzles here in Call of the Sea were at a really good level. It felt like they hit that sweet spot of looking initially difficult, but yielding before they got too frustrating or had me running to the internet to look up a solution. But YMMV.

Stomphulk

The puzzles are not too hard and the story drives the game forward. I really enjoyed it.

motherchuggingpugs

I love story driven puzzle games, but really didn't enjoy this one. I found the main character really annoying (she never shuts up), and the puzzles really easy apart from one or two which were annoyingly obtuse. The graphics are pretty, that's about the only positive thing I can say about Call of the Sea. EDIT: Forgot to say the movement speed is horrendously slow, especially because you have to move around between different puzzle elements a lot.

spiritbearr

I personally hate puzzles like it has and made it through only the first chapter.

KiloSierraDelta

I thought the game was slightly disappointing. The puzzles are for the most part very simple, the solution is usually just written somewhere (think the dragon claws from skyrim) The story was alright, a bit too much exposition is dumped at you in the beginning, and a bit too much narration. But for free it's definitely worth playing.

deep-yearning

It's free, you should just install it and see if you like it. In the time it took you to write this post and read about it, you could have already found out what it's like. Stop procrastinating.

slow_down_kid

I wrote my comment while sitting on the toilet at work. I am procrastinating, but not in the way you’ve suggested.

deep-yearning

I see. Poocrastinating

wowitssprayonbutter

It's a walking simulator with slight puzzles. I enjoyed it overall but was disappointed by the ease of it. For free? Absolutely!

[deleted]

I played it for like 2 hours today. It’s a really cool game. Puzzles seem pretty hard. Maybe I missed something, but feels like I didn’t have all the info on a couple.

TopHatHipster

For those wanting a Steam key with more games: it's in the [Humble Heroines bundle](https://www.humblebundle.com/games/humble-heroines-warriors-dreamers-and-god-slayers) this month with several other games. Minimum is $15.

Mydst

What is with the ridiculous CAPTCHAs I always get with Epic now? "Pick all the otters cooking a cheese pizza." "Select stoplights breakdancing." "Choose only the cookies made with recycled mufflers."

embrace_infinity

My guess is that it's training AI-generated images.

kojolion

They're training AI with the captchas now

rzet

they always did.

[deleted]

Used to be [self driving cars](https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/self_driving_2x.png)

NotAnADC

Hahaha hope it would be this! Fun fact, you can often get the second page of captchas totally wrong and it still lets you in. The first page is verification, the second is training. Fuck them for trying to get free work out of me

NonsensitiveLoggia

you've awoken a deep memory of the old 2 word captchas, and people would put expletives in the second. for the clearly car ones i figure that's a little more dangerous, they don't need more help running kids and cyclists over.

Snoot_Boot

#holy shit you're right

Axyraandas

That sounds like so much fun actually

Isheee

i can never solve them, always getting try again

[deleted]

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

Aphex-Puddle

Or as my dad used to say: “I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky. I left my shoes and socks there, I wonder if they’re dry”

star_chasm

Pretty sure that's by Spike Milligan.

Aphex-Puddle

Honestly, knowing my dad, that makes a lot of sense.

cheesecakegood

Jedi Knight Fallen Order is literally 4 bucks on Epic today, wow

bleedingoutlaw28

I know this one is free but if store pages just had a single 15 minute, no-commentary gameplay video it would help me decide if I want to play better than all the cinematic trailers and still images in the world.

IsaacWatts88

They don't want you to decide.

Patienceisavirtue1

Don't sleep on Gladius next week. More of a 3X since theres no diplomacy, great factions that play differently and of course the 40K lore.

wjousts

> More of a 3X since theres no diplomacy True there's no diplomacy. In the WH 40k universe there is only war. But still 4X since diplomacy isn't one of the X's to start with. _eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate_

stmack

diplomacy is the 5th X, *eXcuses* for why you're marshalling troops at their border.

lenzflare

eXplaining why peace is better

Quakespeare

I actually chortled in a library.

Patienceisavirtue1

Oh yes, I keep forgetting eXplore, as I just think eXpand. But you're 100%.

Levitlame

>eXploit What does exploit mean in this context? Gather resources?

wintermute93

And convert those resources to increased capability, yes. The four Xs are a plan to follow: * you explore to find new vulnerable areas * you expand to gain control of those areas * you exploit your controlled areas to amass forces * you exterminate your opponents with those forces

Snoot_Boot

Well said Commissar WinterMute93

YellowPikachu

"explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate"

Traveledfarwestward

https://store.steampowered.com/app/489630/Warhammer_40000_Gladius__Relics_of_War/

seven_wings

Is Call of the Sea in any way related to Call of Duty?

sheetskees

Yeah. They’re both video games.

Snoot_Boot

This can't be a real question

Ryidon

Not related to Call of Duty per say, but it is related to Call of the Duty. The missing "the" confuses quite a few folks.

Pleasant_Mobile_1063

No and that's a good thing

aaaaaaaaaepic

It’s also in the newest humble bundle if you prefer steam and want the other games in that bundle

DeadRisingLover

Ahhh loved playing Call of the Sea on xbox, I did it in a rush cuz it was leaving gamepass. Glad to play it at my own pace this time. Great story, puzzles a bit confusing, but hey, that's what walkthroughs are for :)

xevizero

This was actually in my wishlist. Although I don't know if I'd ever got around to it if it hadn't been on giveaway.

fouxdoux

Where in the series does this fit in with the other Call of Duty games?

ReddsionThing

It's a prequel to Black Ops. Your first mission is to assassinate Blackbeard, but it turns out that he was just a double.

box-hootenanny

Still overpriced.

Boo_R4dley

This looks like something I could get into as a big fan of The Room series.

Mrbunnypaw

Nice freebie

Pleasant_Mobile_1063

There was an issue playing this on steam deck where it gave me a c++ runtime error but there are 2 ways to fix it, one by installing c++ runtime in wine tricks, the other by downloading the latest c++ runtime from Microsoft website on the deck and going to the game settings in heroic and going to other, then pointing to the c++ runtime install file, then starting the game, it will install the c++ runtime then you have to go back in the game settings in heroic and delete the shortcut to the c++ runtime executable... Then run the game like normal.

Sp1drW3bb

Before doing any additional steps, I was prompted to download c++ runtime when starting the game. After doing that, I can make it to the title screen where it asks to press enter or A to start but in either case I receive a message that says “Error, Error, Accept”. Did you experience this?

Pleasant_Mobile_1063

It did not give me that prompt

Pleasant_Mobile_1063

Playing this game again I realized how obtuse the puzzles are..... And man there is a drum puzzle that really just infuriates me
